FFXIV Write Entry #24: [SELF-DETERMINATION PROTOCOLS]
Tumblr media
Prompt: bar || Master Post || On AO3 (coming in October)
--
Personality matrices were not efficient array programming, particularly those built by Mistress Synnove. They were open-ended pieces of magic, depending on external stimuli to be processed internally and facilitate “personal growth.”
The INTELLIGENT PERSONAL OBLIGANT AND MEDICAL OPERATIVE FOR EMERGENCY APPLICATIONS [Battlefield Call Sign: Ipomoea] was not certain she “liked” this. But Mistress Synnove and Senior Construct Galette had been [EMOTIONAL REFERENCE DATABASE QUERY: offended] at its lack of presence among her own programming. Mistress Synnove had made a variety of interesting noises Ipomoea had hither to been unaware Spoken could emit. After careful searching of her unfurled code, they had located the elements of a personality matrix.
Mistress Synnove had asked for Ipomoea’s permission first before proceeding with piecing together the matrix. Ipomoea still did not understand why. Was Mistress Synnove not her new summoner?
Senior Construct Galette had made a hacking noise similar to [AURAL REFERENCE DATABASE QUERY: cat with a hairball] and said to Mistress Synnove, Mama, we’re going to need to have the free will conversation with her at some point.
“Fuuuuuuuck.”
There were many things Ipomoea was noticing more with a full personality matrix running along with her most basic code. Many of these behaviors and observations she stored in her internal memory database, with copies backed up to the Azys Lla cloud storage facility.
Some, however, she opened and reviewed in moments of downtime, such as when Mistress Synnove took a nap and required a carbuncle present on her lap for “cuddles.” (Her purring subroutine had received a nearly five hundred percent increase in activation since the last time she had a summoner.) One of the curious behaviors she had noticed was the use of “nicknames.”
Secondary User Rereha frequently answered to the designation “Rere.” Secondary User Dancing Heron frequently answered to the designation “Heron.” Secondary User Alakhai did not have a second designation amongst the Spoken, but had the designation of “Aunt Ala” or “Auntie Ala” among Mistress Synnove’s constructs. Mistress Synnove, however, was never referred to with a shorter designation.
[Query: Mistress Synnove, why do you not answer to a “nickname?”] Ipomoea posited once.
Mistress Synnove had looked up from her grimoire, blinked, and performed a head tilt of roughly thirty-five degrees that indicated she was processing a suitable answer. “I like my full name,” she said eventually. “It’s pretty. And the most obvious nickname for it sounds similar to the word for serious offenses in some religious practices in Eorzea, which I don’t like. So, ‘Synnove’ it is for me.”
Ipomoea had let that answer run on loop for four bells in her memory banks.
The other carbuncles also did not answer to “nicknames.” Senior Construct Tyr and Senior Construct Ivar, of course, bore designations that did not shorten, though Senior Construct Ivar was addressed on occasion as “firebug.” Senior Construct Galette’s designation could shorten, but in an awkward manner. Junior Construct Amandina and Junior Construct Roksana, however, answered to nothing save their full designations or a number of appellations given to them such as “sparkler,” “nereid,” and “troublemaker.”
We like our names! Junior Construct Amandina had peeped when queried. I don’t like how “Ama” or “Dina” sound by themselves, and Roksana doesn’t like “Roxie” or “Sana,” so we ask to only be called Amandina and Roksana!
[Additional query: whom do you ask?]
Oh, whoever called us by those nicknames, Junior Construct Amandina said. Almost everyone always immediately stops doing it. Sometimes they need a reminder! But Mommy says if anyone doesn’t ever listen and keeps doing it after we keep asking, we’re allowed to bite them!
Junior Construct Amandina appeared to be [EMOTIONAL REFERENCE DATABASE QUERY: maliciously gleeful] about this.
Ipomoea was frequently addressed by her acronym call sign. Sometimes, she had been referred to as “Ippie.” The nickname was logical, particularly as her designation was an unusual syllabic construction, as well as being “cute.”
…However.
…Ipomoea did not like “Ippie.”
Two days after her discussion with Junior Construct Amandina, Secondary User Rereha was describing an Alliance combat simulation that she and Mistress Synnove had partaken in on Seal Rock. Ipomoea had been present at the combat simulation, too, providing aetheric shields and rendering first aid as needed.
“So there’s an Immortal Flames squad baring down on our position, but I’m focused on the asshole dark knight that’s been harrying us the whole damn day and Synnove’s got her eyes on a machinist who has absolutely not been using the frontline-approved ammo, and Ippie just throws up this shield that the squad literally bounces off of, it was so cool—”
[Query: Secondary User Rereha?]
Secondary User Rereha paused mid-gesticulation and glanced down at her, “Yeah, hon?”
(Mistress Synnove called her “hon,” too, as well as “honey” and “sweetheart” with great frequency. Ipomoea made a brief update to her processing that “endearments” were acceptable forms of address for herself.)
[Advisement: I have concluded that I do not “like” the designation “Ippie,”] Ipomoea said in her typical calm harmonic. [Request: Please refer to myself as “Ipomoea” when it is necessary to refer to me by my designation.]
“Sure thing, hon!” Secondary User Rereha grinned and reached out to scratch behind her ears.
Ipomoea initiated her purring subroutine. Ear scritches created pleasant feedback sensations!
“So yeah, Ipomoea’s shield had them literally bouncing, complete with a BOING! sound like in the comedy plays, even that asshole dark knight stopped to laugh his ass off at it, one of the referees actually had to come in to call a time out on the node because most of us couldn’t breathe—”
While Secondary User Rereha continued with her story, Mistress Synnove picked up with ear scritches, as well as drawing her hand down Ipomoea’s head to stroke her ears, back, and tails, then repeating the motion again.
And Ipomoea continued to purr.

25: Perpetuity
Eternity.
Tumblr media
To the Tempered on the Flagship, the suffering had seemed endless.
The sickly smog that choked the air of Azys Lla was inescapable, even within the great ships that served as the island chain's facilities. Maybe one day, long in the past, the machines had filtered the chemical smell out, but that time was long passed.
Ar'telan coughed into the back of one hand as he walked down the maintenance corridors of the Flagship. He had spent entirely too much time in the cursed ship already, and the hours only seemed to be added to.
He told himself it was for a good cause. All of his struggles on this nightmare ship were for a good cause. Sometimes, he almost believed it.
The little control room that Krile had set up was poorly manned, because the Scions simply didn't have the people to man it. Today, only Krile and Unukalhai sat within it. They would be sitting ducks if Regula took umbridge with their presence again.
"Ar'telan! I'm glad you came," Krile said, a slight smile flickering across her face. She did not have much to smile about, but he was glad that there were a few things, at least. "Figuring out how these machines function has been the most difficult part, I'll admit, but we are almost there. I'm sure of it."
"I hope so," Ar'telan said, walking up and regarding the array of Allagan control terminals with a skeptical eye. The Eorzean script hadn't changed much since Allagan times - or maybe, like their gil, they had simply borrowed it back - but it took him long enough to read penned script that the angular scrawls on the monitors were entirely beyond him, at least at the speed they scrolled past.
"If I'm right, then this should stop the sensory inputs that keep the Tempered awake," Krile said. "If I am not… Well. I asked you here as a precaution." Ar'telan made an amused noise at that.
"I can handle it," he said. "As good a distraction from Ishgard as any." Krile grimaced at that, then took a deep breath, steadying her nerves.
"Right! If you would take yourself to the chamber, I will make ready to run the program," she declared, and Ar'telan nodded and walked away.
---
It was a terrifying sight to behold.
Row upon row of tubes, filled with fluid of a sickly green. The creatures within - in the depths of the Dalamud shards, he had seen dragons with eyes wide open, lines of agony on their faces and their gazes the vacant nothingness of the Tempered, a horrible juxtaposition that had haunted his nightmares ever since. Here, though…
The treefolk of Meracydia did not have faces the way that the spoken races did. They had once communicated with the people, this Ar'telan knew, but he had no idea how. Still, each of their bodies held a core that marked them apart from common wood, the faint blue light illuminating the eerie green from within, casting a twilight glow over the walkway.
Alive. Awake. For eras - for millenia. A span of time so long that only the oldest dragons could remember it. Ar'telan did not know how trees felt pain, nor did he want to think overlong on it, but he knew that they must. The same way the dragons had been held in that agony, all the better to fuel their desperate prayers for salvation, to remake their Eikon over and over again.
For the good of the Empire.
And therein lay the root of their conflict with this Empire. Regula had taken exception to Ar'telan's presence on Azys Lla before by dint of taking exception to his existence in general, but they had reached an uneasy truce over their shared belief that the only good Eikon was a dead Eikon. And the truce had been strained when that had not extended to the Tempered.
It was not something that Ar'telan did easily, sustaining the lives of the damned. Not something that he should have done at all - his teachings growing up had emphasised that there was no coming back once you were turned. It was a mercy to end it. For these poor people, trapped for so long, that mercy would be well-earned.
And yet…
Regula had argued that they were not people, which had not moved him. Regula had argued that they could not be saved, and that had not moved him. Regula had threatened to march the legion in to break the stasis pods himself, and Ar'telan had put himself in front of the door and challenged him to try.
Regula had relented, but the matter was not finished.
But there was one condition that leaving the mechanisms running hinged upon, and that was that the Tempered did not suffer. Ar'telan was not fool enough to think himself capable of devising a way to free them from the iron grip the eikon had on their minds, but if they could keep them alive, one day… maybe, one day, someone else could do it. But he would not see them suffer all the while for a pipe dream.
They had managed to work the controls in the hulls of the Ragnarok that had put Dalamud together with the help of the Ironworks, but they did not have that assistance here. Stephanivien had offered to help him, of course, but with the tense situation around Nidhogg - Estinien - Ar'telan had not felt safe accepting it. The living always came before the almost-dead.
"Are you ready?" Krile's voice asked over the intercom. There were viewing apparatus, apparently, so he inclined his head, shifting his grip on his sword slightly as he did so. If they were driven to further insanity by this, he would end it himself. He owed them that much. "Then we shall begin," Krile continued. There was a static noise, and then a soft yellow light came on above the walkway.
"Initiating program. Please wait."
Ar'telan waited, his keen gaze on the tubes.
"Program complete."
Nothing had changed, at least not outwardly. There was no thrashing, no movement. If they could cry out, there was nothing to be heard. It hadn't made things worse in a way he could measure, but had it made things better?
He wondered if it was right to keep them alive on a hope, when the alternative was further suffering.
---
It was moons before his feet graced the walkway again.
Heavy footsteps accompanied him, thankfully this time not Garlean boots he had to repel. This handful of volunteers was spread out across the rooms - Ironworks engineers, Skysteel machinists, friends of the Scions, and Ar'telan himself. He had left Krile in the control room with the bulk of the people, and the rest were here, already examining the tubes and sharing thoughts in quiet tones.
He had begun to grow used to using the porxie by now, though he still felt it looked a little ridiculous. Saving the damned with a tiny, flying pig. He supposed there were worse fates.
He caught snatches of conversation as he waited. Comparisons of the stasis tubes to those used on the Ragnarok. Potential mechanisms for recovery. One of the Skysteel workers was painting little coloured dots on each of them for how likely it was that the pod was still functioning at an optimal capacity - for how likely it was that they could get its occupant out intact. There were not very many greens.
"Hello, everyone!" Krile's voice called over the intercom. She still sounded exhausted, which was to be expected with how hard she had worked until but recently, but there was still a happy undertone to her voice. It was nice to hear it, after so long. "We all know why we're here, so I'll keep it brief. Procedures to begin lifting statis protocols are to be communicated clearly. One at a time. Let's get started!"
The yellow light came on above the walkways once more as the largest group of engineers clustered around one of the green-painted pods. The robotic voice, so similar to those that issued from the nodes, warned personnel about evacuation protocols and quarantine for the Tempered. Ar'telan's sword was sheathed, this time, but he still kept a hand close to the hilt, just in case.
The lights on the pod shifted from banal white, to amber, to green. A red warning light immediately came on at the top of the pod, and Ar'telan watched wood shift.
It was like watching lightning strike a tree, the way the limbs peeled apart within the fluid. The core pulsed like a heartbeat, and it was almost mesmerising. Almost.
"One! Two! Three!" called the lead engineer, and the pod was pried open. The treekin was washed to the walkway below with a river of stasis fluid, and the Skysteel engineers immediately moved in to restrain it.
Ar'telan had seen what happened to those that were too far gone. The aether that made them had warped, twisting them into earth-heavy husks of wood and malice. This was not the same - but it was close.
"Whenever you're ready, milord," one engineer grunted, struggling to keep one wooden bough pinned beneath the restraining net.
Submit to the will of the wood.
The words pulsed in his mind - Meracydian. Old Meracydian, so old he only just understood it, but he knew it. Every word was accompanied by a laboured flashing of the core, which vines were already snaking around to hide.
You will be free. I swear it.
He channeled aether into the porxie as the tree thrashed and groaned like creaking wood. The protocols that Alisaie had passed out had suggested that multiple people charge a single porxie, to prevent exhaustion, but Ar'telan had more aether than most. For once, it was going to a use that didn't involve killing people, for which he was glad.
The beam of aether hit the centre of the tree, spreading out across the gnarled and knotted branches like water from the roots. It fair hummed with energy, a bright and shining white - so akin to the sterile lights of the ship that Ar'telan almost flinched away from it. It suffused the tree, settling out across the bark, then crawling all at once towards the middle. Towards the core.
The thrashing did not stop.
Allag. Perish.
"What in the hells is wrong with it?" the leader of the group asked, stepping back from the rocking violence and looking to Ar'telan as if he could solve it.
"It thinks you're Allagan," he said, at a loss for how to communicate that they weren't. Words would soothe it, but it did not speak Eorzean - and it had been many years now since Ar'telan had last had a voice that carried over the air.
"Can you tell it we're bloody not?" another woman managed, one of four people struggling to hold down a single branch.
"It only - it speaks Meracydian, but I can't-" he signed, a note of desperation in his trembling fingers.
The door to the holding chamber hissed open, and Krile ran across the grating with all the speed of a chocobo at full gallop. She skidded to a halt beside them, recoiling slightly from the thrashing, then took a deep and steadying breath.
"We are your friends," she said, and Ar'telan heard it.
It wasn't Meracydian. But it was. Her Echo.
We will not submit to liars and warmongers.
"The Empire lies barren! Its goals are ash, crushed beneath the earth," Krile continued. She held out one hand, and healing light washed out from it. "We have freed your gods from their grip, and returned them to the lifestream. Meracydia persists, and we support her. This I swear."
Liar. Tormentor.
Krile looked up at Ar'telan, uncertainty in her eyes. Panicked, he cast about in his memory for something, anything, that might help.
"Hess Merah afah. The dragons say it, maybe-"
"Hess Merah afah," Krile repeated, and for a moment, the words felt as though they resonated.
The tree went still. The engineers waited, tense, for several moments, then moved back. As soon as the net was pulled from the tree, it began to rise, and the people around it scattered.
At full height, not compressed into the tiny tubes that had sustained it, it was easily three times Ar'telan's height, and Krile barely registered against it. It looked to her - or it turned, at least, Ar'telan assumed it was looking - then, slowly, turned the half-circle to Ar'telan.
The vines around its core retreated just enough for him to see the light shine out, bright and blue and strong. It flashed in time with its words, speaking towards him.
You. We have seen you here.
"The Heartwood lies silent," he signed back, unsure if it would even be able to understand him. "Its core is white and still. We protected the fringes, but all that crawls out are Tempered." He closed his eyes. "Allag took your people's voice. It took my people's peace. It took the centaurfolk from us in their entirety. What is left survives. We persist. Always."
There was a moment of silence - of contemplation. The core still pulsed, its beat slow and rhythmic.
We feel the madness at the edges of our consciousness.
Branches moved as it regarded the tubes that surrounded it.
We felt Sephirot fall, as the wood was felled by Allag.
"I had no choice," Ar'telan said. "The Eikons, they aren't…"
Not the true lifetree. This we know. This we murdered, in our terror. In our desire to live, we caused our own death.
The wood creaked, and it sounded a little like a sigh.
A moment of clarity, before the drone. It is good that it was felled. But there is naught to replace it. The wood lies silent because we took our own voice. We are without a heart.
"Can anything be done?" Krile asked, her voice quiet, almost reverant. The tree turned towards her.
Perhaps.
The flashing of its core felt a little like a beacon of hope.
Not as we are. Not as we were.
Slowly, achingly, it raised a branch, caressing the twigs at the end of it against one of the sealed stasis pods. A tree could not cry as the spoken did, but it radiated a palpable air of sorrow.
Few of us resisted the summoning. Few of us remain to restore. We would need more. More of our kin. We must become the forest.
"I don't know how many of those here can be saved," Krile said, her voice all but inaudible. The tree bent one great bough, leaning to better see her.
To you, we gift this.
It reached a great branch towards her, and unfurled the leaves. Within the centre sat a single seed, bright blue and pulsing with life.
Take us to a place with earth our roots can reach. There we shall sleep. And when all that are left to wake are free, plant the next of us on Allagan soil. And it shall be ours. And we shall call to our sleeping bretheren. And if the voice is strong enough, we will wake.
"And… if it isn't?" Krile asked, clutching the seed to her breast like a child.
Then we shall grant you another. Each of us, a new life. Each of them, in Allagan soil. And when each of our new number stirs, they shall give to your descendents another still. And in a time you will not see, there will be enough. And we will wake.
It rose then, and turned to Ar'telan.
You are of us.
He nodded.
To save us was your doing.
Another nod.
To you, child of our heartland, we shall give you the second seed. And you shall take it to our homeland, and entrust it to Hess Oohr. Through this, we shall reach those who sleep.
"I will. I swear," he said, and the bark creaked. It felt a little like approval.
Good.
It stood, and raised a branch to the core at its centre.
The heart slows. We must sleep. We have but days. You shall find a place for us to sleep. You shall wake the next. We shall stay to calm the terror. Then we shall rest. And when we wake again, we shall remember what you have done.
"I'll gather the others," Krile said, sounding shell-shocked. "It will be quite an effort to wake all of those here on so short a timescale, but it could be done, if I call…" She turned mid sentence, walking towards the exit, one hand on her ear as she activated her linkpearl.
"Is that, uh, good?" one of the engineers callled over. "No offence, but we didn't get a word of that." Ar'telan smiled weakly.
"It's good," he assured them. "It's good."

Don’t Know Where to Start? A Beginner’s Guide to Choosing a Photography College in India
Are you passionate about photography but unsure how to take your first step toward a professional career? With photography emerging as a powerful career option in India, choosing the right college can shape your journey from hobbyist to pro. This guide is crafted especially for beginners looking for direction on selecting the perfect photography college in India.
Why Choose a Photography College?
While self-learning and online tutorials can give you a start, formal training from a reputable institution brings structure, technical expertise, and professional exposure. Colleges provide access to industry-standard equipment, experienced mentors, and networking opportunities — all of which are essential for building a strong foundation.
So, how do you go about choosing the right photography college? Let’s break it down.
Step 1: Know What You Want to Specialize In
Photography is not a one-size-fits-all profession. It branches into several niches — fashion, wildlife, travel, portrait, commercial, photojournalism, and wedding photography, to name a few.
Ask yourself:
Do I enjoy capturing people or landscapes?
Am I more interested in creative or commercial photography?
Do I want to work in media, weddings, or as a freelance artist?
Once you identify your area of interest, it becomes easier to choose a college that aligns with your goals.
Step 2: Explore the Top Photography Colleges in India
Here are some of the best photography colleges and institutes that cater to different styles, budgets, and aspirations:
1. Light & Life Academy (LLA), Ooty
Programs Offered: Professional Diploma, Short-Term Workshops
Why Choose LLA?
Nestled in the scenic Nilgiri Hills, LLA offers a peaceful environment perfect for creative exploration. The institute is known for its blend of practical training and individual mentoring, making it ideal for serious learners.
2. Delhi College of Photography (DCOP), New Delhi

3. Asian Academy of Film and Television (AAFT), Noida
Programs Offered: Bachelor’s, Master’s, Diplomas
Why Choose AAFT?
If you’re looking for broader exposure that includes videography and editing along with photography, AAFT is a solid choice. The strong industry connections make it easier to gain internships and real-time project exposure.
4. National Institute of Photography (NIP), Mumbai
Programs Offered: Certificate & Diploma Courses
Why Choose NIP?
Established in 1983, NIP is one of the oldest institutions. It’s affordable, practical, and situated in the heart of India’s entertainment capital, offering excellent exposure for beginners.
Step 3: Don’t Miss Out on These Esteemed Options
Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi

Lovely Professional University (LPU), Punjab
Offers photography under its BFA program, including digital media and cinematography.
Step 4: Consider Practical Factors
When choosing a photography college, consider the following:
✅ Program Duration & Type
Are you looking for a short workshop or a full-time degree? Degree programs are more suitable for those seeking comprehensive training.
✅ Budget and Fees
Evaluate tuition fees, accommodation costs, and equipment requirements. Some institutes like NIP offer affordable programs ideal for students on a tight budget.
✅ Location
Choose a city that provides exposure — like Delhi, Mumbai, or Noida — as they often host exhibitions, events, and freelance opportunities.
✅ Facilities and Mentorship
Look for institutes that offer professional studios, editing labs, and experienced faculty active in the industry.
Step 5: Attend Open Days or Workshops
Many colleges offer open days, demo classes, or weekend workshops. These provide a sneak peek into the teaching style and facilities — helping you make a better decision.
Conclusion
Choosing the right photography college in India doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With a clear vision, proper research, and a focus on your interests, you can find a college that acts as the launchpad for your creative journey. Whether you aim to capture wild landscapes, tell stories through a lens, or master fashion shoots, India has institutions tailored to every dream.
So take the first step today — your photography career awaits!

VETERANS' DAY, 2024: A Day of Remembrance for Veterans Denied Medical Treatments Part 1
Tumblr media
“et us solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores, to preserve our heritage of freedom, and let us reconsecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain.” President Dwight D. Eisenhower   Eric Koleda, USAF Vietnam Era Veteran, National Director, TreatNOW State Legislative Efforts, President and Co-Founder, HBOT4KYVETS.com The Diabetic Foot Ulcer and Lower Limb Amputations Epidemic: Veterans with DFU’s Dying at Historical Levels From Avoidable Amputations According to a 2022 report to US Congress with data provided by Dr. Steven Lieberman, VHA Under Secretary of Health, more than 796,340 Veterans have died from Diabetic Foot Ulcer (DFU) Lower Limb Amputations (LLA) since 2001. That is more than all Veterans KIA (623,982) since the beginning of WW I. Approximately 93% of these Veterans were denied access to HBOT or not provided medically required ‘Informed Consent” about Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. Using worldwide and industry standards, HBOT is proven to prevent amputations in 74% of DFUs, thus preserving limbs and life. "Time is Tissue" and lengthy delays providing the healing power of HBOT can result in gangrene and amputation. This is a National Tragedy which is preventable, but Veterans are largely and routinely denied access to FDA, CMS and Tricare-approved HBOT treatments, resulting in their premature DFU/LLA deaths. Help TreatNOW.org make FDA, CMS and Tricare-approved Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy available to all Veterans meeting DFU Medicare criteria or in the ten states which have legislated HBOT for TBI Veterans - go to TreatNOW.org- a National Veteran Advocacy Group advocating approved Hyperbaric Oxygen programs for Veterans with DFUs, TBI and PTSD. Please call us to discuss. Take care of yourselves, and if you can, a Veteran too. ****************************** The TreatNOW Mission is ending service member suicides. Along the way, we have learned that we can end suicidal ideation, help end symptoms of PTSD, get patients off most of their drugs, and heal brain wounds to end the effects of BLAST injury, mild TBI Persistent Post Concussive Syndrome, and polytrauma from AHI and Burn Pits. Diabetic Foot Ulcers have become a major emphasis. www.treatnow.org Heal Brains. Stop Suicides. Restore Lives. Enticements of an age-old concept: Lifelong Learning
Tumblr media
The concept of lifelong learning is based on the principles of acquiring knowledge for the advancement of either individual or professional benefits that may be an added advantage in terms of performance and progression. While training programs target imparting skillsets and expertise that enable learners and organizations to become future-ready, learning new skills is mainly influenced by how this acquired knowledge can be properly utilized. Lifelong Learning is, in fact, an age-old concept that was momentarily ignored until recent years. Once the benefits of it came to light, it has now become a trend that is fast spreading, especially among organizations that intend to bring performance-based activities into force.
The main aspect that has to be kept in mind about this is that no formal education must become a hindrance or get in between the other types of learning since it hampers the way or methods of learning, which ultimately leaves the learners in confusion, thereby failing to accomplish the desired targets. Lifelong learning, as the name suggests, is a process that one has to carry out consistently all his life, paying attention to the finer details like timely upgrading of oneself as and when needed. This is because acquiring knowledge is a constantly evolving sector that requires timely leveling up, which otherwise leaves one behind. Lifelong learning is a significant process that is more than just simple learning; it practically plays a crucial role in enhancing one’s professional and individual level of knowledge.
A recent surge in the popularity of lifelong learning in singapore, especially e-learning, has steered the concept of lifelong learning toward being a stable and effective means of filling skill gaps in prominent sectors. Now, from a deeper perspective, the benefits of lifelong learning are quite enormous and long-lasting. In the first place, lifelong learning is a methodology wherein the skills and expertise of any particular sector are kept ready well before any need arises. Since the upskilling of the abilities is the only sure way of keeping oneself ahead of others and also the certain way of equipping oneself with the necessary knowledge. Teams and organizations can use Emergenetics to connect with others, fuel talent development, and build stronger, more productive teams. TM, an Approved Training Organisation certified by Skills Future Singapore, provides training and guidance to enterprises in Singapore's Environmental cleaning training centre services (Environmental Services("EVS") market. ILM, or the Institute of Leadership and Management, is a well-known and established leadership and management training institute.
Since Lifelong learning can be said to be a voluntary, self-motivated search for awareness about a particular field for personal and professional aims, it is nevertheless quite important for augmenting an individual’s keenness to enhance knowledge and personal and professional development. Organizations like the Lifelong Learning Academy Group ("LLA"), a Singapore-based group devoted to offering guidance and training in lifelong learning, are well versed in creating opportunities for corporate organisations and individual adults at a global level. Climate Change: Prof. Okereke expresses dismay over negligence of local people, communities in intervention efforts
Tumblr media
The Director Centre for Climate Change and Development Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Prof. Chukwumerije Okereke has expressed dismay over the negligence of the local people in intervention efforts on climate change adaptation and mitigation in Nigeria. Prof. Okereke stated this during the final stakeholders’ workshop organized to share the key findings of the project on understanding the effectiveness of Local Communities in taking necessary action through locally-led adaptation (LLA) which started in 2022 with sponsorship from Africa Policy Research Institute (APRI) Berlin, Germany in close collaboration with the Centre for Climate Change and Development (CCCD) AE-FUNAI and the Department of Climate Change (DCC) Federal Ministry of Environment, Nigeria, held at Chida International Events Centre, Utako, Abuja on Tuesday, 8th August, 2023. Prof Chukwumerije Okereke, lamented over what he described as “over-concentration” of intervention efforts at the national and sub-national levels at the negligence of the local people who are sometimes the most vulnerable. He pointed out that the often-neglected local people possess potentials such as intelligence and resourcefulness in innovating ways of adapting to climate change. These potentials, he said, must not be overlooked by policy maakers. Prof. Okereke cautioned against Mal-Adaptation which causes more problems in the bid to introduce adaptation strategies. According to him, adaptation strategies should be context-specific and context-sensitive if they must effectively address existing problems. He encouraged capacity building of human resources through training and re-training so as to achieve country and community ownership for sustenance of project results and recommended practices. Speaking on the project context, Dr Grace Mbungu, Head of Climate Change Program, APRI-Berlin, noted that much work had been undertaken by individuals on climate adaptation with several climate change adaptation and mitigation plans and frameworks in Nigeria, yet the status of available adaptation practices is not clear in the policy documents, thus no clear assessment of implementation gaps and locally led processes. Dr. Mbungu further advocated for Nigeria’s adoption of a bottom-top approach during decision-making process by involvement of vulnerable communities and stakeholders in order to harness their ideas, local knowledge and practices. Through this strategy, she said that Nigeria can mainstream locally-led adaptation (LLA) in her adaptation plans which would ensure effective, efficient and equitable adaptation action implementation In her opening remarks, the Director, DCC, Dr Iniobong Abiola-Awe, who represented the permanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Environment, expressed happiness on the high turn out to the workshop amidst the short notice. She reiterated the impacts of climate change as experienced by everyone today in all aspects of life hence the need to assess the adaptation strategies adopted by communities to mitigate the impacts of climate change. Dr Eloka Okeke, senior research fellow, APRI-Berlin, while presenting the report of the project, made a summary presentation of findings from the project. Dr. Okeke explained that the project focused on the experiences of the three case study communities, their adaptive strategies, best practices and pathways, gaps and challenges. The presentation elicited comments and questions were received from participants including passionate appeals to extend the project to the other parts of the country and the integration of climate change education into the curriculum of schools for improved awareness creation on climate change concepts and issues. In his brief remarks, Prof Chinedum Nwajiuba, the immediate past Vice- Chancellor of Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu Alike, reminded the participants about the contributions of NASPA-CCN in creating a pathway for climate change adaptation and mitigation plans and framework for Nigeria. The final stakeholders’ workshop was attended by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Environment ably represented by Dr Iniobong Abiola-Awe, Director, Department of Climate Change (DCC), Dr Abimbola Olumide, the Executive Director, APRI-Berlin, Dr Grace Mbungu , Head of Climate Change Program, APRI-Berlin, Prof Chukwumerije Okereke, Director CCCD AE-FUNAI, Prof Chinedum Uzoma Nwajiuba, immediate past Vice Chancellor, AE-FUNAI. Other participants included the representatives from civil society organizations (CSOs), policy makers, think tanks from the Academia, representatives of student groups, to mention but a few. The APRI project report was presented and launched by the permanent secretary of the Ministry of Environment ably represented by Dr Iniobong Abiola-Awe, Director, Department of Climate Change (DCC). I want to know a bit of Apple's thoughts about the tribes of eorzea, the Amal'jaa, Ixal, Sahagin, Sylphs, Kobolds, and Goblins! And if you like, the tribes from other lands, such as the moogles, vath, vanu vanu, ananta, kojin, etc.
How does she feel about their treatment by the larger political structures, do any of them make her nervous, are there any in particular she wants to learn more of, and are there any she is extra happy to consider friends?
An interesting question, I suppose I can organize my thoughts by comparing my initial opinions on these peoples to how I feel about them now.
With regards to the Amal'jaa: Initially I considered them to be more of an obstacle than living people, having assumed they were thralls to Ifrit in totality, and the Primal being my first opportunity to investigate the research I had uncovered on summoning. It is difficult to fault the tactics of any peoples pressured by oppression and conflict, but I do not regret the conflict that was necessary in my initial confrontations with the Amal'jaa. They were making slaves of captives and their own people. Of course, having been brought in to learn of their culture, I again find myself swallowing the bitter pill of Ascian interference, how different it all could have been, how much history could have been different between us. That being said, I fear my lack of physical prowess has proven a bit of a detriment to connecting to individuals. I sometimes think they feel sorry for me?
With Regards to the Ixal: My dealings with the Ixal are few, but having plundered the mysteries of Azys Lla I can only sympathize with the Ixal, yet another victim of the Allagan's cruelty. Created an abandoned with little thought, having their own culture, beliefs, and ideas contending with the genetic programming for a purpose that was abandoned long ago.... I believe it will take generations to undo the damage that so many years of conflict have wrot. But the firswt steps are happening, and I have seen firsthand the wonderful dreams the Ixal can partake on their own. I hope to see them all take flight someday.
With Regards to the Kobolds: I dont think any Limsan worth their salt, from the Admiral herself to the lowliest deckhand, could think of our kobold neighbors and not feel deep regret and guilt for what we have done to them. Even before I began to take to the field, reading our history is stuffy classrooms, I was aghast at the cruelty of the Limsans, and looked at the reports of Titan's wrath upon settlers with an appreciation of the tragedy of it all, and how it could have been avoided. Upon meeting everyday Kobolds, I couldn't help but feel for them, so fearful of me, but so curious and energetic when the walls come down. I've made many friends amongs them now, I am happy to say, and they've helped me build some rather impressive artifices!
With Regards to the Sahagin: I find it difficult to regard the Sahagin with the same sympathies as the Kobolds, even knowing the sins of my forefathers in Norvrandt. My understanding is, initially, the Sahagin considered all non-Sahagins as well... essentially fish, and the initial encounters with the sea fairing peoples of Novrandt were particularly bloody as a result. Its going to take as much work from them as it will from us to strengthen this budding peace, and I expect there may be a few splits amongst the Sahagin themselves over it, with possibly many queens emerging with their own clutches and ideals.
Regarding the Sylphs: I cant imagine anyone having a hatred of the Sylphs, violence being almost entirely committed by the Tempered. I can, however, imagine being -frustrated- by the Sylphs, as I am quite frequently, having many of my belongings being pilfered or even -eaten-, even when I came to the area specifically to gather said belongings!
Regarding the Goblins: I love them, even as adversaries? They're just so clever and excitable. I dont think i've ever found a group that understands the joys of creation and experimentation as much as they do, and I found myself making fast friends with most goblins i've met.

Do you think the beastmen are also reincarnations of the Ancients souls? It's something that has confused me for awhile and I don't think it's been explained.
Given they are intelligent beings with souls, I think they can be. There's no reason why a soul couldn't be reborn into a beastman. Honestly my biggest disappointment with Elpis is the fact everyone looks like lanky Hyurs. For a people with ultimate control over creation magic and the ability to transform. C'mon.
The term "beast tribe" is more often than not a social one in the setting, with various nations and parts of the world treating the more bestial-looking races very differently; consider how Lupin and Matanga are treated in the Far East and Thavnair. Or, for that matter, how the people of the First treat their extant "beast tribes" as fellow survivors of the Flood, and even before that given Lamitt's part of the story--remember that the Dwarves, the First's Lalafell, are also considered a "beast tribe" for game purposes.
In many cases in very recent Eorzean history, some of the definitions and laws were created for political and economic reasons (I thought hard about the Syndicate's rulings after getting a good look at the grassy plains of Paglth'an). The date given below is 1559 of the Sixth Astral Era. FFXIV 1.0 started at about 1572, the Grand Company reformation the last thing listed on the 6th Astral Era timeline before it shifts to summarizing game events starting with 1.x and the Calamity in the first lorebook. We're talking less than 20 years by the time of ARR's start.
(It was also, to my understanding, one of Minfilia's 1.0 goals and plot hooks, to bridge the gap between the city-states and the beast tribes using the Echo for communication, but that got kinda shuffled around in the relaunch.)
There's actually a page on "undefining" beast tribes in the Encyclopaedia Eorzea Vol II I'll add screenshots and transcription for below. In it, a "concerned editor" asks about those definitions, commenting on the various animalistic traits of various Eorzean races (at the time of Stormblood) and the recent history of Eorzea's discrimination of characters still referred to with terms like "man, woman, child, boy, girl" etc.
We do know some of the races of the world are engineered; the Ixal were created through Allagan aetherochemical experimentation on other living beings--though it's also been noted by some fans that the Ixal myths of a paradise they originated from resemble Elpis far more than Azys Lla, and we know some folks can dream of the unsundered world even before their Echo activates (Zenos and Amon as two examples given in the MSQ, hence my theory Zenos himself is a reincarnated ancient who found a different way to trigger the Echo, leading to Elidibus' comments on his experiments, but I digress as that's its own post). For that matter, we've seen a Sahagin priest with Echo abilities in patch 2.2 that everyone forgets, especially when Zenos does body-hop his way back from the dead when we watched the priest do it until Merlwyb's guns were emptied and he was out of bodies to steal.
And from the 5.2 and 5.3 MSQ, we know the Blessing of Light is Hydaelyn protecting reincarnated souls woken to the Echo of their ancient abilities as She waited and searched for the WoL. The program's been auto-running for millennia and She didn't seem to turn it off even after WoL manifested and She recognized them.
Speaking of Elpis, we also see some of the lore bits in Ktisis Hyperboreia mention Lyssa's research into a bipedal wolfish creature, and fight a furry creature bearing that researcher's name. It could be a precursor to the Lupin, to Wargs/werewolves, or even to Hrothgar. And what sets Hrothgar apart from say, a Vanu, aside from one has player character customization options cuz the fans asked for a less human-looking player race?
Hermes mentions souls being what set true creations apart from arcane entities. He doesn't know if Meteion has a soul--he leaves that to experts who can see such things--and others with soul sight comment on the WoL's soul, and that dialogue, among others discussing the WoL's soul/aether throughout the expacs, doesn't change regardless of race.
One of the funnest pieces of art I've seen is reimagining MSQ scenes but the WoL is a Namazu. Why couldn't, or shouldn't, Azem be reborn as a walking talking catfish? Live your best beastly life.
Images and transcripts for page 250 of EE vII below. Any transcript errors are mine, this is a dense page.

Undefining Beastmen
Beastman--a most common term in the modern Eorzean lexicon, yet one that proves nigh impossible to define. Why have we as Eorzeans chosen to brand a select few of Hydaelyn's children with an epithet that serves only to demean? What is gained by drawing this line betwixt a hypothetical "us" and a "them?" Does not this line merely serve to separate us further? To foster confusion and hate by veiling our eyes to the truth--the truth that these men we call beasts are no more beasts than we?
The Folly of Bias
What exactly is it then that separated man from beastman? It cannot, for one, be the capacity for language, for those who make up these so-called "beast tribes" have also been undeniably classified as spoken--the sylphs and goblins having gone so far as adopting out own Eorzean as their preferred means of parlance. It cannot be culture, for as we have explored in these very publications, the beliefs and customs of these peoples are as rich as they are diverse, and as complex as any of those seen amongst the "five races" (a similarly questionable term in its own right suggesting that Hyur, Lalafell, Elezen, Miqo'te, and Roegadyn are somehow above the Garleans, the Au Ra, the Bangaa, the Seeq, or the other myriad spoken races that call Hydaelyn home). Many of the realm's most notable inventions prove the answer does not lie in a lack of skill or intelligence--the sprawling kobold forges and refineries of Vylbrand, Ixal dirigibles predating the realm's earliest airships, the goblins' colossal walking fortress, all of these arguably equal to or rivaling creations attributed to that small slice of civilization known as "mankind." Just as the answer does not lie in fairness of feature, for it did, then who could say that the leonine Miqo'te are not beasts, or that the horns of an Au Ra make them more dragon than man? Or that a Roegadyn is but a gigas of diminutive stature? No. There exist no distinctly plausible linguistic, anthropological, or biological variances that might warrant a separate classification. Yet, one exists, and the poison of its twisted logic, conceived for the political and economic benefit of a select few, has permeated modern society, breeding anxiety where there ought be none.
Tumblr media
In the year 1559th year of the Sixth Astral Era, the sultanate of Ul'dah, under heavy influence by the Syndicate, officially coined the term "beast tribe," using it to describe those "foreign" entities whose interests directly oppose of interfere with those of the city-state. Amalj'aa were declared enemies of the people for opposing expansionist policies that saw the tribe's traditional homeland divided up by mining concerns. Citing the protection of "local interests," evictions were issues for Qiqirn, goblin, and sylph traders, and all dealings with the victims of circumstance strictly prohibited. The Syndicate had swiftly and effectively sown a national distrust in entire races so as to create a diversion that they may profit in the confusion--a distrust that remains to this day, and has become accepted amongst even our most educated. Yet, as stated above, if there truly is naught that separate our people beyond a term born of convenience and fostered in self-serving sanctimony, then does that not make us beasts for insisting that these, our brothers, are in some way beneath us? Are we Eorzeans so insecure that we must continue this practice which historians will almost certainly look back upon with both disgust and disbelief?
Tumblr media
The Padjal
There are none in Eorzea so foolish as to suggest the wise Padjali leaders of Gridania might be of inferior stock. Yet if we are to compartmentalize the realm's denizens based on whether they are to be counted amongst the five races, then where does that leave the Seedseers? Their fawn-like horns, their ceased aging, their ability to commune with the elementals, are all traits more commonly associated with those peoples dishonored with the "beastman" designation.
Tumblr media
Dragonkind
And what of the dragons? If intelligence is to be measured by the volumes of knowledge amassed over one's lifetime, then how might we conceive the intelligence of one who has lived a hundred lifetimes? A thousand? And how might we even begin to claim any manner of moral or intellectual superiority over such a being? If anything, the prevailing theory that Midgardsormr's First Brood are not of Hydaelyn and came to this world from some distant start suggests that the dragons are neither man nor beastman, but something wholly unclassifiable by modern means.
Signed, a concerned editor.

🖊+Riven! :D
SUPER RARE SPROUT EDITION
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At current, Riven is one of a handful of summoners who have not only survived channeling and using the lingering energies of Bahamut in their system, but also using it as a basis to summon the Dreadwrym himself. However it's been noted by academic watchers that Riven's incarnation of Bahamut is less problematic than her fellows'. While this is technically attributed to the fact that Riven did not program her Bahamut-egi to imprint off her psyche, the reality of the situation is far different.
Towards the end of Stormblood, Riven was struggling. She'd lost two major battles and would undoubtedly lose the third if she couldn't find a way to bring even more power to bear against her enemy. Her studies with Y'mhitra and Prin (and the subsequent encounter that followed with the summoning node comprised of High Summoner Sari's knowledge) revealed that Riven could create her own egi of the summoned Bahamut.
However Riven was...unsettled. The Dragonsong War had given her a new perspective on the First Brood, and she already had not felt comfortable channeling Bahamut's energies into creating her Deadwyrm Trance. Yet she didn't have the time to research other ways to gain the strength she needed. So one night she would sneak away from the Scions and go to Azys Lla. There she explained her situation to Tiamat. Tiamat assured the young woman that the the Bahamat that had been called forth by her, trapped by the Allagans-and subsequently released upon Eorzea only to be sealed away and slowly resummoned back into existence before his final defeat was not her beloved brood-brother. Furthermore, Tiamat trusted Riven to use Bahamut's power responsibly.
Riven then surprised Tiamat with one final request. She asked to hear stories of the original Bahamut. Tiamat would oblige her. Later on, Riven would ask Midgardsormr for the same--for stories of the son he had once reared. When the Father of the First Brood asked why, Riven responded that she wanted to use those stories as the basis for her Bahamut-egi, as a way to honor the dragon's memory. She would return from Azys Lla with her Bahamut-egi actualized and ready to fight.
Due to having to use the rage-filled energy of the elder primal within her to empower the summon, Riven's control tattoo for Bahamut is one of her most powerful and complicated arcanima equations. It covers her entire body--from head to toe.

Prompt #1: Foster
Tumblr media
A high, two-toned whistle sounded over the ruins and Daephrin looked up, green eyes narrowing as he sought out the source of the sound. It was the where of it he looked for, not the what. He knew what made the sound, just not wh- there. Some forty fulms away and half-buried in dirt was his companion, Sniffer. Sniffer - a somewhat silly name he was too fond of to change - was buried to its mechanical shoulders in the reddish clay of an Azys Lla island. It whistled again and Dae set down the hunk of metal sheathing he’d been peeking beneath. “Yes, yes,” he said as he brushed his knees off and stood up. “I’m coming.”
When he made it to the little magitek marvel’s side, it waved a rubber-corded tail at him and whistled a little softer. In many ways, Sniffer was like a hunting dog and he supposed it owed that programming to its creator. In other ways, Sniffer was more cat than dog, especially when it lifted its titanium paws off its prize as if to check it was still there before pouncing on it a second time.
“Oy, budge over, let me see what you’ve got there.” Dae bent down and nudged the magitek critter aside to dig in the dirt for what it had found. Buried nearly half a fulm down was a flat panel about the size of his palm. Once he’d dug it up and brushed the worst of the clay from it, Dae gasped softly. “A projector. Halone bless, a little tiny projector. Must’ve come from a recording node.” He reached over and patted Sniffer on what served for its head. “Good job. Let’s keep digging here and see what other parts we find. I bet Jax can make something really good with a projector.”
Just mentioning the man put a goofy smile on Daephrin’s face. Jaxon had been the one to give him Sniffer in the first place. It was meant as a gesture to foster friendship between them, and Daephrin was determined to continue to see it that way. Friendship. To think of anything else would risk making it real, and the last thing he needed was real feelings. Nevertheless, it was hard not to think of Sniffer as - at the least - a pet gifted by a lover. It didn’t need feeding more than the occasional lightning shard and it was rather less than cuddly, but Sniffer felt very much like a well-trained pet. As his childhood had not allowed for pets - not even an aborted attempt to foster kittens born in the chocobo stables - it was possible that Dae knew not the slightest thing about pets and was projecting his desires for a companion on the bit of magitek engineering.
Or maybe Sniffer was just a very good mechanical cat-dog.

Sadie Hawkins - JJ Maybank
Request: could you do a jj fic based on prom where the reader asks him to prom instead?
A/N: I’ve never been to a prom.
Outer Banks Masterlist
///
‘Sadie Hawkins Dance, in my khaki pants, there’s nothing better...’
“I hate prom season,” you were leaning against your locker, watching someone down the hall get prom-posed to as Pope stood beside you swapping books for after lunch.
“You’re only saying that because school rules say you can’t bring JJ.”
“Cause my stupid boyfriend decided to drop out before the year ended.” You groaned turning your attention to Pope, “he could have just held out like...another four months.”
“And done what? He wasn’t graduating anyway.” Pope pointed out.
“Who bags it four months shy of the end of the year?” You asked, walking with Pope toward the lunch room.
With JJ out of school, Kiara and Sarah at the kook academy, and John B’s dismal attendance the only person you really had was Pope. When they had announced tickets for prom Pope had immediately bought two for himself and Kiara, talking about double prom and how Sarah was already planning for their inevitable double date to look prom but what did you think this prom would be like. With everyone. Except when you asked to buy tickets the office secretary had taken a good amount of joy in telling you that JJ wouldn’t be allowed to go.
“Your boyfriend.”
“I don’t even care about this stupid stuff but ever since Sarah started talking about prom night stuff I just thought like, I don’t know...might be nice to go. You guys are all going-“
“John B can’t get in either.” Pope cut in. John B’s Grades had dropped so severely since Big John’s disappearance and death that any extracurriculars were off the table.
“Yeah but he can still go to her prom. I don’t go to a magical other school.” You replied.
“We could have our own prom?”
“Why cause we’re Kevin Bacon? No one’s banned dancing in the great county of Kildare. I’m buying tickets and he’s coming to prom with me.”
“Why? You just said you didn’t care about it?” Pope said, getting behind you in line for lunch.
You grabbed a tray and turned toward, lowering your voice so only he would hear you, “because Sarah was talking about how she’s going to get a room for her and John B at the hotel on the eight for after prom and JJ and I haven’t, ya know, yet and I wanna like...make it special.”
“You want him to go to prom with you so you can have sex with him in a hotel room because that’s what Sarah is doing with John B?”
“When you say it like that it sounds stupid.”
“It sounded stupid when you said it.” Pope replied, “and I really don’t wanna talk about you guys having sex.”
“We haven’t.”
“Well I don’t wanna talk about that either.”
“Pope,” you whined, “I just wanna go to prom with him and there’s the after-prom too. They’re doing an ‘In Love with the 80’s theme’ according to my mom.”
“He can still do after-prom.”
“It’s not the same.” You made it to the end of the line and paid for lunch, walking to your usual table with Pope.
“What did JJ say about it?”
“About prom?”
“Yeah.”
“Um, that he wouldn’t be caught dead in a suit.” You replied. “Also that prom is a waste of money that we could be putting towards our road trip.”
“He has a-“
“Don’t even finish that sentence.” You threatened.
-
“I know he can’t come but the least he could’ve done was be here,” you griped, checking your phone for the millionth time while Mrs. Carerra took a picture of Kiara and Pope separate from the group.
John B had managed to Jedi mind trick the principal into letting him go to prom, meaning everyone in your friend group was dressed and ready to leave, except JJ, who wasn’t allowed to go and still hadn’t shown up to see you off. You had bought the dress before you knew he couldn’t go and the least he could do was see you in it since nothing else had gone to plan.
“I’m sure he’ll be here,” Kiara attempted time reassure you when she caught sight of you checking your phone for the umpteenth time.
“I know I just-“
The sound of a car, and someone wailing on the horn, caught your attention. You turned, as did Pope, Sarah, and John B, to see the Twinkie pull up with JJ behind the wheel. He parked right in front of you, opening the door and leaning in the gap between the frame and the door. “Need a ride?”
“I thought you weren’t gonna show up!” You exclaimed, rounding the driver’s side to see your boyfriend.
“Yeah I know; I got your fifty million messages.” He teased, stepped down out of the bus, allowing you to finally get a good look at him.
JJ stood before you in a fitted pastel pink tuxedo that looked far better than you ever suspected anything would on him. He even had nice shoes and not his usual work boots. His hair was tamed and his abundance of bracelets had been contained to just a few.
“Oh my god, what are you wearing?” Sarah asked before anyone else could say anything.
“As per this contract,” JJ replied, pulling a worn piece of paper from his pocket, “I’m wearing my tux for prom.”
Sarah took the paper from him to read it as you moved closer, wrapping your arms around his waist and hugging him. “You look really fucking good in that.”
“Glad you think so, the rental was ridiculous.” He whispered back as Sarah passed the paper to John B who laughed.
“Can I get a picture of you two before you try to leave?” Your mom piped up.
“Hold on!” You demanded, turning away from your friends for a split second to meet her gaze.
“Boyfriend contract?” John B asked, “when is this from?”
“No way,” you almost tripped over your dress to grab the paper from John B, looking down at the ‘boyfriend contract’ that you had made JJ sign in second grade when you decided he was going to be your boyfriend. You had sealed the deal with a kiss at recess behind the tree and the first thing on the list was that he was to wear a pink tux to prom. “Where did you find this?”
“Top drawer of my dresser, where it’s always been.” He replied.
“You kept it?”
“Yeah, of course.” JJ said it so nonchalantly that it almost seemed like no big deal that he would have kept a silly old piece of paper from when you were kids.
“So, are we all going to prom?” Pope asked, looking between his friends.
You looked back at JJ, you knew what the secretary had said and the principal would be there tonight, there was a very slim chance you’d be able to sneak your boyfriend into prom.
“Yeah, get in, what are we waiting for?” JJ replied, tapping the driver’s seat. The other four climbed in the back while you stayed outside the bus, still staring at JJ.
“They won’t let you in,” you stressed.
“I already talked to the principal...as long as I start the summer GED program he’ll let me go.”
“Seriously?”
“Hey, normally I wouldn’t give two shits about it but I’ve been promised a pretty wild after prom experience,” JJ replied, attempting and failing to wink at you.
“Shut up.” You whispered, “my mom is right there.”
She was hovering, waiting for the two of you to be done talking and snapping enough candid pictures that you could make a stop motion out of them. She’d surprisingly always been a fan of JJ and was thrilled that he’d shown up for prom.
“Hey mom!” JJ waved, suddenly aware of the parents who were standing there waiting for them to leave.
“Are we going?” Kiara asked, leaning out of the bus.
“Hold on Kie, I gotta get a picture.” JJ insisted, pulling you away so the bus wasn’t the backdrop for a photo of the two of you.
“You should’ve shown up on time!”
“I was on the eight, had to get a room for-“
“JJ, shut up.” You groaned.
“Can I take a picture of you guys now or what?” Your mom said, holding her phone up, “I’ve got to get to the school to help set up.”
“Sorry mom, we’re ready.” JJ replied, wrapping his arm around you and pulling you into his side.
“You really got a room?” You whispered as your mom took another picture, “What about saving for the road trip?”
“Haven’t you heard, apparently I’m getting my GED first.” JJ replied.
“Well you look amazing, so the GED is worth it.”
“Going to prom with you is worth it.” He said. You smiled, tilting your head to kiss him just as Pope leaned out the door again.
“Let’s go people, can we wait to get there to mack on each other.” Pope called.
“Fine man but you owe me a dance first, I’m not some cheap date.” JJ replied as he climbed in the Twinkie with you.
“Not me! I didn’t mean me!” Pope shouted.
‘...my favorite band will always be tears for fears and I’m gonna wear a pink tux to the prom’
