In a front garden in Kirkwall, Orkney, a Laburnum anagyroides (common laburnum, golden chain, golden rain) was flowering. It has been a cold, wet spring but this tree was a cheerful addition to the street landscape.

Adding height to the back of this cottage garden border was Laburnum anagyroides (common laburnum, golden rain). This small tree was introduced into the UK in 1560 and is often planted in parks and gardens. It should be used with care as the plant is poisonous including the seeds.

Laburnum anagyroides (golden chain)

Laburnum is a genus containing just two species of small trees within the pea family, Fabaceae. It flowers in the spring and then produces pods very similar to normal peapods. Parents beware: little children sometimes eat these pods by mistake and get very, very ill. All parts of the plant contain cytisine (a potent nicotinic receptor agonist) and are highly toxic to humans and pets. Strangely, rabbits and deer can eat it with no ill effect.

This plant is native to Central and Southern Europe but here it is on the west coast of Canada and yes, that’s the Pacific Ocean in the background. Proof once again that the international gardening community practices its own form of ‘globalization’ (and this planet will never be the same again).

laburnums are, again, members of the legume family, fabaceae, which is probably why their hanging blossoms look so similar to a wisteria. they are smaller, though, giving the tree the look of being draped with gold chains.

all parts of the common laburnum are poisonous, especially the seed pods- forbidden peas, I guess.

The first project of 2023 is a reality. A parting gift, in the form of a meditation stool. Made out of maple and with details in golden rain. To accentuate the caring that the person in question felt very strongly about. But also the unique opportunity connecting. The observant viewer will see similarities with the stool Thomas Tielt Groenestege once made for ‘de tafel van zeven' project.
