Chapter 91 Spoilers

It's interesting to see the different ways characters believe peace should be achieved but also how peace should be memorialised. For Loid and Yor, what they want most of all is to let their loved ones live in blissful ignorance. They know the costs of war, they know it intimately. Their childhoods were disrupted because of it and they had to grow up too early, had to witness and also wield violence in ways no one so young should have to.

And this trauma lives with them, it shapes their ultimate goal which is to make sure that no one should have to go through what they went through. So, to them, Anya and Yuri's innocence and joy is precious. It's so precious that they will do everything they can to preserve it. (The tragedy is that despite all their efforts, Loid and Yor couldn't protect their innocence—Anya was made into an experimental subject before Loid even met her, Yuri has joined the repressive SSS and become complicit in state violence.)

In contrast, the Lady Patriots resent the innocence of the younger generation, although this is a false assumption since Yor and Millie and the rest of the City Hall workers do know the costs of war.

The Lady Patriots are so caught up in their own loss and grief that they can't see how the younger generation has also suffered. They can't see that the point of peace is to ensure that no one suffers as they did, and they mistake that lack of experience for disrespect.

The project of peace means that there will necessarily be a gap between the older generation/s who fought for it and the younger ones who benefit from it. It means that no matter how well the younger generation/s study and understand the mechanics of war, they will never have the direct experience that those before them did.

So the bitterness of the Lady Patriots is understandable. You can absolutely sympathise with the kind of retroactive grief that many of them must feel, of not having the stability that those younger than them seem to enjoy almost unthinkingly. These characters are in mourning for their own lost youth, for their own loss of peace because having been in the midst of war means some part of you is always there.

But lashing out at the City Hall workers, at Millie who is grieving just like them, is misguided at best. They're placing the burden of their suffering in the wrong place.

It reminds me of what Sylvia says in Chapter 63:

Perhaps the Lady Patriots ought to take note, hmm?

Spy X Family: Mission 2 vs Mission 91 (Spoilers) - Yor's relationship with city hall co-workers

Gotta love how Yor is growing both as a person and also in her social life.

I feel these two panels not only have an interesting contrast in how her relationship with her co-workers have developed; but also in her general demeanour. In Mission 2 she acted much more withdrawn, distant and stoic, barely reacting much at all to them. Meanwhile in the panel from Mission 91, Yor is much more openly emotive and interactive with the others.

I've also seen it pointed out that stepping in to defend Millie from the Lady Patriot Society doesn't seem like something early Yor would've done, since its an act which brings attention to herself and could jeopardise her cover. In Mission 91 however she just stepped in and willingly made herself the centre of attention by speaking to the Lady Patriots.

On a semi-side note, am looking forward to seeing more of how Yor's work life improves. Could be interesting if we see more done with Sharon's son going to Eden in the same year as Anya for that matter.

Melinda is revealed to be a super-patriotic member of the state, even moreso than Donovan (Lady Patriots Society) 

Rumors of Twilight’s presence reaches the Desmond family’s ears 

Melinda takes the initiative and goes to the Garden to hire an assassin to take Twilight out 

Yor is the assassin assigned to Melinda’s request.

WTF is a “čert”

-a guide from a bilingual Czech

while English has words like devil and demon, čert is a slavic mythical creature, that doesn’t have an accurate name in other languages

Czech has three (common) words:

Ďábel - THE devil, ruler of hell, usually interchangeable with Lucifer

Démon - demon, used when talking about other creatures from other mythologies

(and the enigma) Čert

Čerti (plural) are the devil's minions. They either work directly in hell or are sent on earth (often as a punishment) to make deals with sinners and drag them into hell. However they’re commonly depicted as silly idiots or playful, mischievous tricksters. And selling them one’s soul is seen as confirmation of their own foolishness (make stupid choices, win stupid prizes).

They look like humans (mostly men, but you can come across a lady here and there), with added goat features- horns, tails and sometimes even hooves. Their clothes are haggard, often featuring furs, they’re covered in soot and other dirt.

While in old tales are seen as an actual threat, nowadays (in mostly atheistic czech society) they’re depicted as pathetic little meow meows- comedic relief characters, laughable villains and even love interests for princesses (turned into humans for their good behavior)

They can be found in basically every other czech TV fairy tale. While I have seen people suggest to just use the word krampus in english, because of the surface level similarities between the two creatures, I wouldn’t recommend it. Because A)they have widely different vibes B)some czech (and other slavic) might punch you in a fit of patriotism

Disclaimer: while creatures like this are in many (if not all) slavic folklores, under varying names, this post is centered around the czechoslovak version, because that’s what I’m familiar with

Now we know that there's another POV going on in that Yor centric chapter. Loid and Franky were there too. And it's nice to see that Franky is genuinly worried about Yor getting close to the Lady Patriot society (this group is still suspicious for me 👀).

This panels of Loid stole my attention.

We can see how Loid want to stay all business and "all for the mission", but that one panel with focus of his eyes.

Gosh.

They were all stood too far away from Yor to actually hear what Yor has said, so most likely it was Twilight who read her lips.

Yor's frowning is shown clearer at chp 91...

... but I believe this is the very first time Twilight ever see Yor having such expression. And also the first time Yor ever speaks up about her mind regarding the war, and how it affected everyone, including her.

An Ostanian. Who also left orphaned because of the war.

Loid must've know and can assume what happened to Yor was quite similar to what has happened to him. But he might be so accustomed seeing Yor being all cheerful and smiley, that this sudden expression of her hits hard.

I hope Endo will bring this up again later on. Because I believe he IS cooking something 👀👀

Anime only watchers and people who aren't caught up with the Manga, BEWARE... Cuz I'm about to discuss Spy X Family Mission 91... You have been warned...! 👌

[SPOILERS AHEAD FROM THIS POINT ON]

This chapter was very interesting and quite informative...!! 😲

And though I was not too feeling well this morning (and I still feel a little unwell now), I still wanna discuss today's chapter...! So let's talk about it, shall we? 😊

This chapter begins with Anya heading off to school and Yor going to an event that her city hall job is helping with... And before they head off, they greet the Authens...! 😊

And I just love that Anya calls Sigmund and Barbara "Grandpa Siggy and Granny Barb"...! 😆 It's both so adorable and continues their new found relationship from the previous chapter!! 🤗

And this might be a little off topic, but I've noticed that we haven't really seen Twilight go to work since the mole arc... 😲 I mean, it could just be that we aren't seeing him go to work, but this also makes me wonder if WISE actually gave him a break for once! 😅

Anyway, back to chapter...!! 😁

At the event, we see Yor's coworkers, Dominic (who we haven't seen since Mission 24 I believe, which was FOREVER AGO 😵) and even McMahon...!! 😁 The event is a charity event to help disabled veterans and the Lady Patriots Society is gonna be there... Hearing that, Yor remembers that Melinda is apart of that group:

Yor tells her coworkers that she's met Melinda and is even her friend, but they believe her and Dominic even suggests that she might not even show up. Then...:

We see that Millie has an issue with being here... But then, these ladies from the Lady Patriots Society started to butt in, even saying things like this:

This saddens me because I know that there are people that are like this in real life that belittle others because "they had it worse"... Though not everyone has suffered through the horrors of war, it doesn't mean that what they've been through is less painful...

After that, Millie shares her thoughts...:

...And those women start to berate her...:

But my girl Yor steps in to defend Millie...!:

Then one those horrible women were going to attack them, but Melinda steps in to stop her...!

Yor's coworkers see that Yor was telling the truth about her and Melinda being friends, but Millie gets upset by this... In Millie's eyes, since Melinda is the wife of Donovan Desmond, the man who started the war, then Yor is not a good person for being associated with her... But, McMahon refutes Millie's claims about Donovan...:

This is a very interesting development... 🤔 If memory serves me right, we've never truly gotten confirmation about how started the war, but we knew that Donovan was involved with it... I feel like there's something else going on here, but my brain is really jumbled up today from being sick to really think on about this development for to much...! 😩

Melinda then adds this:

Millie then apologizes to Melinda, and decides to stay and help out the event... Lastly, Millie thanks Yor for helping her out today and makes me hope that they'll become true friends in the future...!! 💗

And that was Mission 91, it made love Millie as a character more than before and even Melinda a little as well...!! 😄 This chapter was quite the serious one, so not that many funny moments time around, but that's what I love about this series...!! 🤗 Endo always seems to maintain a fantastic balance of serious and comedic moments in my opinion, that's why I feel that Spy X Family is unlike any other...!! 💗

I really wanted this review come out sooner, but I woke up feeling horrible... I know I don't have to release something about the new chapter on the day it comes out, but I have a bad habit of procrastinating projects, and these reviews are my way push out of that habit, by making myself write a review before it gets too late it the day...! I typically get mad at myself for missing the deadline that I set for myself, but since the next chapter comes out on Christmas Eve, I might postpone my review until Tuesday the 26th because Christmas is my favorite holiday, but we'll see...! 😉

Obviously there's a lot we can talk about with this chapter, namely protective!Yor being mvp as per always, standing up for herself as well as others (I am a human being) twat coworker #2 got a little bit of dimension, it seems Barbara and Sigmund are going to be at least semi-regular characters, not everyone in the Lady Patriots Society is as nice as the moms from the volleyball team ect.

But this is the one that excites me

Endo-sensei please, I beg of you don't take this away from me for another TEN months YEARS! Plan C or not I need to see Yor have REAL FRIENDS who LIKE AND SUPPORT HER

I’m definitely more wary of the Lady Patriots Society after this chapter. I wonder if they were accepting of Yor back then (ch65) only because Melinda was the one who introduced her. I don’t think they would’ve given Yor the time of day otherwise. I mean, look at how some members treated Millie and Yor in ch91. If Melinda hadn’t stop them, things would’ve escalated. They only backed down because of her and they seemed to want to be on Melinda’s good side and all. Hmm.

Yor is so generous and kind. Even tho Millie has been mean to her before she was still willing to defend her in front of the Lady Patriots Society. While it might be naivete in Yor's part especially since most times Millie was only thinking those mean thoughts but it's admirable how Yor never holds grudges against anyone. Not even with Camilla who has been rude to her upfront.
