Laura Perrudin sort le 19 mai son album Live Featuring the Ghost Orchestra, témoin de ses performances hors du commun en concert. Seule sur scène, la harpiste se démultiplie avec ses effets et instruments, son Ghost Orchestra. A regarder avec un extrait vidéo saisissant.

"The Ghost Orchestra aka Le Grand Poulpe du futur est un dispositif que j'utilise sur scène" a expliqué Laura Perrudin. "Il est constitué de ma harpe chromatique électrique, que je joue de différentes manières (avec des objets coincés dedans, en tapant dessus avec une batte...), de ma voix, de pédales d'effets pour sculpter les sons et d'un ordinateur contenant un looper multi-pistes et un logiciel de rooting pour aiguiller le signal sonore dans différents canaux."

Laura Perrudin nous dévoile le 19 mai cette performance de live-looping virtuose et jusqu'au-boutiste enregistrée à l'occasion de l'ouverture du nouvel Antipode à Rennes (ville natale de Laura Perrudin).

Electric Harp

When someone mentions harp, words such as eloquent or classical tend to come to mind. Electric and Jazz are typically not associated with the harp. “The Connexion” writes “French electric harpist is latest female music pioneer” about a harpist by the name of Laura Perrudin. Not only is she an amazing classical harpist, but one of the first to popularize the fully electric-chromatic harp.

An electric harp is very similar to a normal harp in string number and pluck technique, but has more possibilities for genre, sound, and even overall use! Perrduin uses her electric harp as “an orchestra and a drum kit, creating a whole range of sounds with an arsenal of laptops, sound-effect pedals and multi-track loops.” Similar to a MIDI controller connected to a DAW, different sounds can be played on it that aren’t even a harp. As a harpist myself, my dexterity on harp is much better than on a piano, so to be able to use an instrument I know very well to achieve the same live performance techniques I wanted to on a MIDI controller is fascinating.

Other capabilities with the electric harp are being able to make similar sounds to an electric harp, which allows rock music to be played and other distorted textures. Perrduin’s thoughts on live performances with electric harp are “The tempo, the exact rhythmic pulse, varies slightly from one performance to another. Also, on stage I always keep a space for improvisation. There are always spontaneous ideas.” Performing with more options sparks more creativity rather than just playing off of a score/sheet music. Harpists and all instrumentalists always have to perform, but there’s a uniqueness and skill to improvisation that makes it stand out from a regular recording.

The achievements that Perrduin does are amazing and make her a good inspiration for women! It’s very important to keep in mind that even though harp is an instrument dominated by females, they are discredited many times in music and for her to be innovative in the harp community is very admirable. It even inspired me and I would like to try these techniques on an electric harp one day!

Premiere: Laura Perrudin

Having developed an early enthusiasm for jazz during her childhood in Brittany, it’s no surprise that Laura Perrudin grew up with a talent for exploratory composition and expressive musicianship. Playing a unique, custom-made chromatic harp, Perrudin has positioned herself between several musical worlds, with her jazz roots spreading into electronic territory via a complex network of loopers, pedals and controllers.

Having won awards and plaudits aplenty for her 2015 debut Impressions, Laura Perrudin hones her approach even further with the spectacular follow-up, Poisons & Antidotes. Released via her own Volatine label, the album exhibits a rich musical language, with adventurous compositions wrapping themselves around both her own words and, on occasion, those of the romantic poet William Blake. The album’s distinctive sonic sheen was finessed through mastering by Valgeir Sigurðsson at Reykjavík’s Greenhouse Studio, which has previously hosted the likes of Björk, Feist, Camille and Damon Albarn.

To celebrate the forthcoming UK release Poisons & Antidotes, MusicMap is thrilled to present one of our favourite cuts from the record, ‘The Trap’. A warped, crackling intro opens out into a serpentine composition, with Laura Perrudin’s silky, stream of consciousness vocals flowing over a shifting soundscape, full of creeping tones and enigmatic textures…

“This is a song I wrote after a nightmarish night on a ferry during a storm”, Perrudin explains. “I took medications to avoid sea-sickness and, because of that, had a very sordid nightmare and woke up in the middle of the night. The storm was at its climax, I was alone in the dark, unable to move, stuck in the images of my nightmare with scary sounds all around me to feed it. To free my mind from these terrible thoughts I took a piece of paper and wrote blind what I was feeling. The next day I found this almost unreadable writing, and put it in rhymes and in music.”

Laura Perrudin’s Poisons & Antidotes receives a UK release on November 3rd, and is followed by a performance at Barbican for the London Jazz Festival on November 19th. For an idea of what to expect on stage, check out a live performance of ‘The Ceiling’s Maze’ here.

End of Year Wrap-Up 24/12/2018

Happy Merry to all you readers!

I’ve had a great year but all us music fans have had an even better one! Streaming services mean that now more than ever we can experience the musical output from all corners of the globe (though overwhelmingly the English-speaking parts of it) to understand different points of view, learn of the goings on in other parts of the world and most importantly indulge ourselves in a bit of a boogie. All the moods, genres and feels you could think of are out there, so over the holiday period perhaps try and listen to something new. Who knows it might break the tension with that younger/older relative round the xmas table when you find they also happen to like k-pop/jazz-funk/grindcore or at the very least you can bicker about the tragedy of the current album charts (Greatest Showman: 21 weeks!). To aid you in your quest for knowledge/excitement/small-talk I have spent almost 30 minutes curating a best-of for both albums and singles in the year of 2018.

Sur son dernier album Perspectives & Avatars sorti l'année dernière, Laura Perrudin s'échappe du jazz pour explorer une pop expérimentale d'une richesse sidérante. On retrouve sur l'album de nombreux invités comme Krismen, Mélissa Laveaux, Ian Chang, Clément Lemennicier, Becca Stevens, Emel Mathlouthi, Dylan James, a Low Woodwind Trio, sans oublier Philippe Katerine. C'est avec ce dernier qu'elle sort aujourd'hui Push Me, librement adaptée de la pièce « The Siberian Trombinoscope » par Pilot Fishes.
