El efecto de los libros es algo misterioso. Todos los padres y educadores han hecho la experiencia de creer que le daban a un niño o a un adolescente un excelente libro y escogido en el momento adecuado y luego veían que había sido un error. Cada cual, joven o viejo, tiene que encontrar su propio camino hacia el mundo de los libros, aunque el consejo y la amable tutela de los amigos puede ayudar mucho. Algunos se sienten pronto a gusto entre los escritores y otros necesitan largos años hasta comprender lo dulce y maravilloso que es leer. Se puede comenzar con Homero y acabar con Dostoievski o al revés, se puede ir creciendo con los poetas y pasar al final con los filósofos o al revés; hay cien caminos. Pero sólo existe una ley y un camino para cultivarse y crecer intelectualmente con los libros, y es el respeto a lo que se está leyendo, la paciencia de querer comprender, la humildad de tolerar, escuchar. El que solamente lee como pasatiempo, por mucho y bueno que sea lo que lea, leerá y olvidará y luego será tan pobre como antes. Pero al que lee como se escucha a los amigos, los libros le revelarán sus riquezas y serán suyos. Lo que lea no resbalará, ni se perderá, sino que se quedará con él y le pertenecerá y consolará, como sólo los amigos son capaces de hacerlo.

Para que sigan vivos

¿Aquello si quiera es un ser vivo? Fue el primer pensamiento que se me vino a la mente cuando, desde el umbral de la puerta, vi el cuerpo de Emil tendido en la cama. En mi interior se refutaban dos anhelos muy opuestos; por un lado, deseaba verle, pero al mismo tiempo quería esquivar aquella necesidad y huir de esa habitación.

El recorrido hasta la cama se estiró en una tortuosa eternidad. Me senté a su lado y aún no me atrevía a dirigirle la mirada, pero cuando lo hice, el corazón se me congeló en el pecho por un extenso segundo, pues sus párpados estaban cerrados y su respiración era casi imperceptible, como si estuviese…ni siquiera deseaba pensar en esa palabra. Puse mi mano en su hombro para sacudirlo suavemente, con el temor de quebrarlo como si se tratase de una figura de cerámica. Con lentitud abrió sus ojos y, luego, me ofreció una sonrisa quebrada. ¿Aquel cadáver en vida era el mismo Emil que había conocido en el colegio?, ¿ese era el chico que lograba sobresalir en toda la multitud estudiantil solo con su contagioso carisma?, ¿dónde quedó aquel tintineo travieso en sus pupilas, ese que tanto lo caracterizaba? No era posible que fuese mi amigo, sin embargo, era tan real como la guerra que azotaba nuestro continente. ¿Qué había hecho? ¿Cómo es que no había podido ser consciente de la catástrofe que produciría?

—Hermann…

Las lágrimas me picaron los ojos cuando escuché mi nombre en su deteriorada voz.

—Emil, amigo mío, he venido a pedirte disculpas, si no me hubiera entrometido en los asuntos que no me conciernen, no te encontrarías en este lamentable estado.

—La guerra no es culpa tuya, Hermann...

Una lastimera risa raspó su garganta.

 

—Sabes que no me refiero a la guerra

—Tarde o temprano se iban a enterar.

Sus opacos ojos se enmarcaron en un sentimiento de compasión y aquello acrecentó en mí la acidez de la culpa que me venía carcomiendo desde hacía seis años.

—Es por mí que te encuentres en esta situación tan miserable.

Mi garganta hacía presión sobre mis palabras. Sentía que en cualquier momento me iba desmoronar en lágrimas.

—Yo fui, soy y seré el único responsable de mi situación, Hermann.

—¿Al menos puedo hacer algo por ti?

—Quizá sí puedas hacerme un favor —murmuró luego de permanecer un largo rato callado— Toma esas hojas, aquel lápiz y escribe lo que te voy a dictar. Redactaría por mi propia cuenta, pero, como ves, no tengo la fuerza suficiente ni para levantarme yo solo.

Me acerqué a la mesa de noche y tomé los materiales que me pidió mi amigo, dispuesto a escribir lo que él me dijera:

 

 Sighisoara, 18 de diciembre de 1916

Querido padre.

Muchos han acudido a visitarme; vecinos que apenas vi una vez en las calles, viejos amigos del colegio cuyo nombre olvidé y hasta personas que aseguran compartir mi sangre, pero que jamás he visto.

Sin embargo, tú no te sientas a mi lado como lo hacen ellos, ni siquiera te acercas a la cama, te quedas allí bajo el umbral hasta que los visitantes están satisfechos con su obra de compasión y deciden retirarse. Solo permaneces parado ahí, sin expresarte ante nada, como si fueses un espectador fantasma. ¿Me odias? O más que odio, ¿es decepción? Le he preguntado a mamá sobre la exactitud de tus sentimientos, pero siempre desvía el tema y yo prefiero no insistir ¿Ni siquiera verme al borde de la muerte te permite soltarte de aquel injustificable rencor?

Esta carta no es para reprocharte aquella indiferencia que no comprendo, sino para explicarte lo que no te dignaste a escuchar cuando, nublado por el odio, tomaste la precipitada decisión de enviarme a la Universidad de Múnich cuando te enteraste de lo que estaba sucediendo con Xavier. Hermann, quien me ha hecho el favor de escribir por mí, te entregará esta carta cuando muera, así que no podrás propinarme una cachetada cuando la leas, así como lo hiciste aquella vez.

Conocí a Xavier en 1906 cuando teníamos trece años. Salíamos de la eucaristía matutina, y, por alguna razón del destino, él se encontraba caminando a mi lado. Jamás me había percatado de su presencia hasta en ese momento. Imagínate, padre, por algún capricho de la vida o del posible ser superior que nos gobierna, él estaba ahí, a mi lado, y yo era ignorante de la historia que desencadenaría aquello.

“¿Tienes cigarros?” Siempre te veía fumar y en mí despertó la necesidad de saber que se sentía, así que ese día tome una caja que estaba en tu escritorio, creo que nunca te diste cuenta porque jamás me dijiste nada. Desconocía lo que causaría mi curiosidad.

“Sí, pero no sé fumar.”

“Regálame unos cuantos y a cambio te enseño.”

Nos escabullimos hasta llegar a el cementerio sin que los maestros se dieran cuenta, y, apoyados en unas lápidas, él, con paciencia, trató de enseñarme a fumar. Te admito que me desagradó; la sensación de tener el humo esparciéndose en mi garganta fue todo lo opuesto a placentero. Sin embargo, hubo cosas muy buenas. Entre chistes sin sentido y anécdotas graciosas, aquella mañana se esfumó como las estelas de humo que se desprendían del cigarro de Xavier.

Hablamos como si nos conociéramos desde el vientre o desde una vida pasada. No aprendí a fumar, pero sentí que logré una conexión casi inquebrantable.

Éramos inseparables, solo nos faltaba el apellido para ser hermanos, creo que eso lo recuerdas muy bien. Padre, yo estaba seguro de sentir un incondicional cariño fraternal hacia Xavier, pero aquel día en los establos aleteó en mis entrañas el verdadero sentimiento que le profesaba.

“Emil, ¿alguna vez te ha gustado una chica?” me preguntó. Nos encontrábamos cepillando a un caballo. Él se estaba al otro lado, y cuando alcé la mirada él ni siquiera me dirigió la suya. Le respondí que no, con la excusa de que las niñas eran muy difíciles de entender.

“Entonces supongo que nunca has besado alguna” dijo con sorna

Saqué la lengua en un gesto de asco a lo que él soltó escandalosas carcajadas que, al parecer, casi lo dejan sin respiración. Creo que él se mofó de mi un buen rato. Siendo sincero no lo recuerdo muy bien, el estado en que me encuentro en este momento no me permitía rememorar con exactitud mis memorias; solo sé que estaba muy avergonzado pues la mayoría de los chicos ya habían besado a alguna niña. El punto es que él me pidió que lo besara. La propuesta me pareció algo extraña, mas no abominable, como se supone que debería haberme resultado. Terminé accediendo sin necesidad de mucha insistencia. Fue un roce, un minúsculo roce, que me sacudió el alma, que me sacudió los sentimientos.

Me negaba que pudiese estar enamorado, ni siquiera permitía que aquella idea se asomara por mi mente. Pero soy humano y a veces no podemos someter ciertas cosas a nuestra voluntad, como el hecho de amar.

Xavier también estaba en una lucha constante por reprimir a sus bulliciosos sentimientos. Lo conocía muy bien para poder darme cuenta de aquello. No hubo momento, ni lugar, ni muchísimo menos se pronunciaron las palabras para concordar que seríamos amantes secretos. Fue un contrato silencioso que se escribió con imperceptibles roces de manos, miradas que no deseaban desprenderse una de la otra, cálidos silencios y que al final terminó firmándose a punta de besos inocentes. Ni el tiempo ni la distancia lograron acabar con aquello, y el concepto de moralidad que nos impusieron desde infantes flaqueó frente a aquello que sentíamos.

Sé que a pesar de que leas esta carta tú nunca entenderás lo que he escrito, y que hasta el lecho de tu muerte condenarás mis sentimientos. Esto lo hago más por mí que por ti; solo deseaba explicarte lo que tenías miedo de escuchar.

Atentamente, tu hijo.”

Dejé el lápiz levitar unos segundos sobre la hoja después de que Emil callara; no frenó en ningún momento su discurso que temí que se hubiese quedado sin aire. Alcé el rostro para mirarlo y vi que tenía los ojos estáticos en el techo. Se me encogieron las entrañas con la sola idea de que hubiese dejado de respirar, así que lo llamé por su nombre en un murmullo; él se giró hacia mí y me preguntó si lo había escrito todo, yo asentí y luego me incorporé, decidiéndome que tenía que hacer aquello.

—Emil, necesito mostrarte algo, pero deberás levantarte.

—Amigo mío, sabes que no puedo.

Sus labios agrietados se curvaron en una sonrisa melancólica. Sin embargo, le seguí insistiendo con la condición de que yo le ayudaría. Al final terminó accediendo con resignación, pero se veía de cierta forma feliz por poder levantarse. Hice que su brazo rodeara mis hombros y yo lo sostuve por la cintura para llevarlo hasta la ventana.

—Mira.

Incliné la cabeza a un lado en señal de que volviera los ojos hacia fuera, y, cuando me obedeció, inmediatamente se soltó de mi agarre y trastabillando llegó hasta la ventana para pegar el rostro en el vidrio. Durante mi visita, ese fue el único momento en el que en sus ojos tintineó la poca vida que aún le quedaba.

 

Calle abajo y escondido tras el gran lienzo que sostenía el caballete estaba Xavier, enfrascado en terminar su obra, como lo había hecho desde los habían separado.

 

—Desde que te fuiste se ha sentado en aquella esquina para pintar tu ventana, siempre tuvo la esperanza de volverte a ver.

Una sonrisa, oh, Dios santo, una sonrisa tan hermosa se dibujó en su rostro que el corazón se me encogió por la conmoción.

Emil murmuró con anhelo el nombre de su amado. Este, como si lo hubiese escuchado, levantó en ese instante el rostro hacia la ventana, y sus ojos se conectaron en la lejanía. Se gritaron todo lo que no se puede expresar en las palabras; con el hecho de mirarse ya se profesaban de una forma intensa aquel amor que prevaleció a pesar del paso del tiempo. Fui el único testigo de aquel último encuentro, fui el único testigo del te amo de Emil que quedó atrapado en el vaho de la ventana.

A la mañana siguiente me dieron la noticia de que Emil había muerto. Xavier, al enterarse, volvió a las trincheras donde murió al año siguiente. Después de la guerra y la separación del Imperio, la ciudad entró en una crisis, sin embargo, mi familia pudo afrontarlo y logré graduarme de la universidad con excelentes calificaciones. A pesar de esto, la culpa me perseguía. Estaba allá, arrinconada en la sombra de mis pensamientos, torturándome en murmullos por aquel error que acabó con la vida de mis amigos más cercanos. Sentí que enmendé mi equivocación hasta que fui elegido alcalde de la ciudad y logré que trasladaran el cuerpo de Xavier desde Oradea a Sighisoara para así poderlo enterrarlo junto con Emil.

 

Todos los días voy a visitar su tumba y a veces me encuentro con algunos turistas que acuden al cementerio. Al ver aquella lápida —la única con dos nombres— se les despierta la curiosidad, así que yo procedo a contarles la historia de unos héroes de algo más valioso que una guerra. Algunos se conmueven en silencio y a otros se les salen las lágrimas, pero he logrado algo más que corregir aquel gran error: hacer que ellos sigan vivos en la memoria de las personas.

On this day in 1882 a farmer's wife who lived near Bridport, took a gamble with four pounds. She entrusted the money to two travelling women who claimed that they could treble money, and who asked for just a few shillings in return for their financial acumen.

They marked the coins with astrological symbols, and hid them. The farmer was having none of this and demanded to know where they had put the loot. Despite his wife's warnings that it must be left undisturbed until Easter Sunday, the farmer dragged the truth from her and discovered that the two strangers had stuck something up the chimney.

The something turned out to be a cloth-wrapped, pin-stuck smoked pig's heart stuffed with polished farthings. That was that: the spell was broken, and so the four pounds was never trebled. That is the non-cynic's way of viewing it.

Animal Hearts used as Folk Charms

Witches were once commonplace in Dorset, and the belief in witchcraft was never stronger than in the outlying villages and hamlets - such as Hawkchurch.

In 1884, one of its residents made an unusual discovery, for found lodged up a chimney of the farmhouse was a stuffed bullock's heart studded with thorns, pins, and nails.

published in 1922 wrote:

"An interesting illustration of that to which Mr. Roberts alludes occurred some forty years ago in the parish of Hawkchurch, West Dorset, an account of which appeared in the Bridport News in March, 1884. A new tenant had recently entered into possession of a house in the village which had just been vacated, when it was necessary to displace what was thought to be a lodgment in one of the chimneys. The obstruction was got out, and was found to be neither brick nor stone, but a bullock's heart, into which was stuck a quantity of the prickles of the white thorn, some nails, pins, and other things. This bullock's heart, in exactly the same state in which it was removed from the chimney of the cottage at Hawkchurch, is now, or was, in the Literary Institute at Bridport, and was exhibited at the meeting of the Dorset Field Club at that town in July, 1889, when I myself saw it. It presented a very dry, shrivelled, and almost mummified appearance, evidently having been in the smoke for many years. A correspondent suggested that as the late occupant was a bachelor, possibly he might have used the " charm " to ward off the attacks of the ladies and to prevent " witches " from getting access to the house by means of the chimney! This correspondent is undoubtedly right in conjecturing that the obstacle in the chimney was intended to act as a charm, for a bullock's heart so placed was always considered by superstitious Dorset folk to be the most effective way of keeping witches or fairies out of a house, as it was by the chimney they were generally supposed to effect an entrance. More especially is the charm to be depended upon if the animal's heart (as in this case) be previously studded with prickles of thorns, nails, or pins, in the same way as Mr. Roberts mentioned with regard to pieces of bacon used for the similar purpose. In order to make the charm more efficacious, " maiden " thorns should be used ; that is, thorns that have been grown the same year in which they were picked.

The same paper in April, 1901, mentions a similar case as occurring at Shipton Gorge, which carries the belief in such practices in West Dorset up to the beginning of the present century.   It says :—

" A week or two ago the son of Mr. Fowler, sweep, of Bridport, while sweeping a chimney in one of the cottages in Ship ton came upon a curious relic of past days. He had reason to go up the chimney, and about eight or ten feet from the ground he found an old canvas bag, hanging or fixed in a cranny of the wall, and inside this was discovered, wrapped in paper, a hard and dried bullock's heart, stuck through and through with thorns and pins. This is the fourth heart of the kind found in chimneys in the neighbourhood within the last few years. This was one of the charms against the witch's spell in days gone by, and was hung in the chimney with the idea that the pins and thorns added torment to the witch and broke her spell."

The late Mr. Bosworth Smith, in his Bird Life and Bird Lore (1909), p. 366, spoke of the belief in the " evil eye ", and in the bewitching of cattle and persons, as still lingering on in Bingham's Melcombe and the surrounding villages. And he mentioned the practice of sticking pins into a bullock's or other animal's heart as still followed in that neighbourhood. But in the instance he there gave of this having been carried out only a year or two before, the " charm " would seem to have been used rather as a remedy or cure for the bewitching or overlooking than as a preventive against the spell being cast. In this case the heart, " bestuck with pins till it bristled all over with them ", was set before a fire ; and then " as it begins to glow and frizzle the power of the witch or wizard gradually diminishes, and when at last it burst with the heat the spell is broken and the witchcraft over."

A Bullock's Heart impaled with Hawthorns

At Wyke Regis, Weymouth, there once lived an old woman who was suspected of practising witchcraft, for it was believed she had overlooked a young girl. A gypsy informed the girl's mother to hang a bullock's heart stuffed with pins inside the chimney, which in time would break the spell. The mother did this and when the heart dried out, it fell into the fire and was burnt to a cinder. Later when her daughter recovered, the old witch was seen in a fit of rage claiming that some one had been meddling in her affairs.

Mentioned in the 'Dorset Year Book 1942-3'. The Police station at Frampton, near Dorchester found a Bullock’s heart in their chimney.

"A farmer complained his cattle had been ‘overlooked’ and were all gradually dying off. He was told to take the heart out of the last animal which had died and push the heart, stuck all over with pins and nails, up the chimney so that the ‘overlooking’ would pass back again where it had come from."

"In a case where the horses were dying from some obscure complaint, the victim was told to cut out the heart of the next animal that died and boil it in water containing sage, peppermint, and onions; when cold, it was to be stuck full of new pins on the one side, and on the other with "maiden" thorns — i.e., thorns of the present year's growth — picked by a maiden — woman or girl — and inserted by her. This done, it was to be hung up on a nail in the chimney of a neighbour — the one accused of being the witch."
