The Characters of 2023
It’s time to talk about…The Characters™️. They shall be graded on a scale of “get behind me” to “I’m getting behind you”
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Belinda (The White Lotus)
Tumblr media
The only unambiguously decent person at the resort (who stayed longer than an episode, sorry Lani) and just the absolute best who deserved better. GIVE HER HER OWN WELLNESS CENTER GODDAMMIT. Scale: GET BEHIND ME
Ellie Williams (The Last Of Us)
Tumblr media
Precious, hilarious and ferocious.
SCALE: While I could technically get behind her, I’ll have her get behind me in order to spare her trauma.
Misty Quigley (Yellowjackets)
Tumblr media
She has never done anything wrong in her entire life (she has committed multiple murders and was a horrible person even before the plane crashed). But it’s fine, we love her anyways.
SCALE: I’m getting behind her 100%.
TOP 10
10. Quinni Gallagher-Jones (Heartbreak High)
Tumblr media
Deserves better, the sweetest, I love her so much.
SCALE: GET BEHIND ME
9. Peter Gordon (The Power Of The Dog)
Tumblr media
The second that Tumblr discovers this movie (highly recommend by the way) it’s all over. I need people to join me in understanding the power of Peter Gordon.
SCALE: I’m getting behind him. Easy.
8. Laura Palmer (Twin Peaks)
Tumblr media
Absolutely tragic, could have been saved by listening to Preacher’s Daughter, has the best theme. Of course I love her.
SCALE: GET. BEHIND. ME.
7. Dale Cooper (Twin Peaks)
Tumblr media
Fictional husband. Absolute king. Get this man a cup of coffee immediately.
SCALE: He’s an FBI agent, so I should probably get behind him.
6. Armond (The White Lotus)
Tumblr media
An icon, a legend, and the moment. No one is doing it like him, and no one will ever do it like him again.
SCALE: Honestly we’re probably on the same level. We’ll fight Shane together.
5. Mrs. Lovett (Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street)
Tumblr media
Served (both literally and figuratively) at unprecedented levels. Absolutely horrendous in the most amazing way. I am a stan forever.
SCALE: Probably getting behind her.
4. India Stoker (Stoker)
Tumblr media
She has the best fashion sense and was always true to herself (even if true to herself meant…well, the movie). Love her.
SCALE: I’m getting behind her.
3. Laura Lee (Yellowjackets)
Tumblr media
The human embodiment of Sun Bleached Flies. Sweet sweet girl, was not built to survive Yellowjackets and deserved better.
SCALE: GET BEHIND ME. DON’T GO ON THE PLANE.
2. Alicent Hightower (House of the Dragon)
Tumblr media
Come season 2, everyone has their (genuinely awful) character that they will be defending to the death. She is mine. Do not come to me with Alicent slander; I will justify it.
SCALE: Young her needs to get behind me, older her and I are probably on the same level.
Helaena Targaryen
Tumblr media
Who else? Love absolutely everything about her. I’m dreading Season 2, but in my mind she’s away from King’s Landing, happy and safe with her babies. She is The Character.
SCALE: GET BEHIND ME, I WILL BE SEEING THE REST OF THE CAST IN COURT

Tumblr media
I am not trying to do that to you. Oh my gosh
Well, you guys will have to deal with a screenshot
I think I liked it better when I didn’t have any siblings
I don’t know what happened to either of them to be honest with you
I may have spoken with Eddie after I left, I don’t know
But I have a pretty strong feeling I never spoke with Steven ever again
A lot of that for nonsense
Chatty huh
Yeah, I don’t do that
Did I say your name right before Harnoor?
Yay, thank you
No, I forgot my question shit
I had a couple of questions actually
I guess you probably must have found something pretty nasty to even be in my energy field. Actually, I think that Steven probably wants to know have you guys killed I don’t know
Nobody cares about Steven anymore. I think I was the only person who cared

Pride and Prejudice
Classic and loose adaptions from 1940, 1967, 1980, 1995, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2016, 2018, 2019
The second of Jane Austen’s novels, first published in 1813, is the most often adapted, inspiring various different takes on it. The ones pictures above are detailed below:
Pride and Prejudice (1940 Film)
This black and white film departs from the original novel in some (or should I say many?) points
Written by Aldous Huxley and Jane Murfin, adapted from the stage adaptation by Helen Jerome; directed by Robert Z. Leonard
Starring Greer Garson as Elizabeth Bennet, Laurence Olivier as Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, Edward Ashley Cooper as George Wickham, Maureen O'Sullivan as Jane Bennet, Bruce Lester as Mr. Charles Bingley, Ann Rutherford as Lydia Bennet, Melville Cooper as Mr. William Collins, among others.
Pride and Prejudice (1967 Miniseries)
6 episodes x 24min. Black and White footage Written by Nemone Lethbridge, directed by Joan Craft
Starring Celia Bannerman as Elizabeth Bennet, Lewis Fiander as Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, Richard Hampton as George Wickham, Polly Adams as Jane Bennet, David Savile as Mr. Charles Bingley, Lucy Fleming as Lydia Bennet, Julian Curry as Mr. William Collins, among others.
Pride and Prejudice (1980 Miniseries)
5 episodes x 54 min Written by Fay Weldon, directed by Cyril Coke
Starring Elizabeth Garvie as Elizabeth Bennet, David Rintoul as Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, Peter Settelen as George Wickham, Sabina Franklyn as Jane Bennet, Osmund Bullock as Mr. Charles Bingley, Natalie Ogle as Lydia Bennet, Malcolm Rennie as Mr. William Collins, among others.
Pride and Prejudice (1995 Miniseries)
6 episodes x 54 min Written by Andrew Davies, directed by Simon Langton
Starring Jennifer Ehle as Elizabeth Bennet, Colin Firth as Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, Adrian Lukis as George Wickham, Susannah Harker as Jane Bennet, Crispin Bonham-Carter as Mr. Charles Bingley, Julia Sawalha as Lydia Bennet, David Bamber as Mr. William Collins, among others.
Pride and Prejudice (2003 Indie Film)

Bride and Prejudice (2004 Film)
Bollywood-style Musical. Loose adaption set in modern India and England. Written by Paul Mayeda Berges, Gurinder Chadha; directed by Gurinder Chadha
Starring Aishwarya Rai as Lalita Bakshi (Elizabeth), Martin Henderson as William "Will" Darcy,  Daniel Gillies as Johnny Wickham, Namrata Shirodkar as Jaya Bakshi (Jane), Naveen Andrews as Mr Balraj Uppal (Bingley), Peeya Rai Chowdhary as Lakhi Bakshi (Lydia), Nitin Ganatra as Kohli Saab (Collins), among others.
Pride and Prejudice (2005 Film)
Written by Deborah Moggach, directed by Joe Wright
Starring Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Bennet, Matthew Macfadyen as Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rupert Friend as George Wickham, Rosamund Pike as Jane Bennet, Simon Woods as Mr. Charles Bingley, Jena Malone as Lydia Bennet, Claudie Blakley as Charlotte Lucas, Tom Hollander as Mr. Collins, Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennet, Judi Dench as Lady Catherine de Bourgh, among others.
The Lizzie Bennet Diaries (2012–13 Webseries)
160 episodes x 2-8 min, available on Youtube Loose adaption set in modern US, told in a vlog format
Created by Hank Green and Bernie Su, from Pemberley Digital
Starring Ashley Clements as Elizabeth Bennet, Daniel Vincent Gordh as William Darcy, Wes Aderhold as George Wickham, Laura Spencer as Jane Bennet, Christopher Sean as Bing Lee, Mary Kate Wiles as Lydia Bennet, Julia Cho as Charlotte Lu, Maxwell Glick as Ricky Collins, among others.
Lizzie’s videos amount to 100 episodes + 10 Q&A, but shorter series enrich the story by offering other characters’ perspectives, most notably Lydia’s (and also Georgiana’s). A playlist at Pemberley Digital’s Youtube channel features them all in order.
The series has also been adapted into a book, The Secret Diary of Lizzie Bennet (2014), and spawned a sequel novel, The Epic Adventures of Lydia Bennet (2015).
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2016 Film)
Loose adaption inspired by the 2009 novel of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith, which adds zombies to Austen’s original story. The movie makes alterations from the zombie book as well.
Written and directed by Burr Steers
Starring Lily James as Elizabeth Bennet, Sam Riley as Colonel Fitzwilliam Darcy, Jack Huston as George Wickham, Bella Heathcote as Jane Bennet, Douglas Booth as Mr. Charles Bingley, Ellie Bamber as Lydia Bennet, Matt Smith as Parson William Collins, among others.
Orgulho e Paixão (Pride and Passion) (2018 Telenovela)
Brazilian telenovela in Brazilian-Portuguese
162 episodes x 30-40min (original version) Loose adaption set in 1910s São Paulo state, Brazil
Created by Marcos Bernstein, directed by Fred Mayrink
Starring Nathalia Dill as Elisabeta Benetido, Thiago Lacerda as Sr. Darcy Williamson, Pâmela Tomé as Jane Benedito, Maurício Destri as Camilo Bittencourt (Bingley), Bruna Giphao as Lídia Benedito, Bruno Gissoni as Diogo Uirapuru (Wickham/Willoughby), among others.
The story takes inspiration from all 6 of Austen’s major novels (plus Lady Susan), but mostly from Pride and Prejudice. Others stars include Chandelly Braz as Mariana Benedito (Marianne Dashwood) and Anajú Dorigon as Cecília Benedito (Catherine Morland).
Features 100 episodes in the International cut. The telenovela has been broadcast in other countries and languages (such as Spanish) but as far as I know, not in English.
Pride and Prejudice: Atlanta (2019 TV Film)
Loose adaption set in modern Atlanta, USA. All-black cast. Written by Tracy McMillan, directed by Rhonda Baraka
Starring Tiffany Hines as Elizabeth Bennet, Juan Antonio as Will Darcy, Raney Branch as Jane Bennet, Brad James as Charles Bingley, Reginae Carter as Lydia Bennet, Carl Anthony Payne as Rev. Collins, among others.
*****
Personal favorites: 2005, then 1995. But also: The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Orgulho e Paixão
I also enjoyed Atlanta and, while it’s been a while since I’ve seen Bride and Prejudice, it’s got Indian musical numbers so c’mon, one gotta watch it.
Back to the closer adaptions, despite its age, 1980 is also good! 1940 is...very different, but fun in its own way.
In fact, while I find some of these versions weaker, I could find enjoyment in all of them - but maybe that’s cause I’m a sucker for P&P.

Roots and Routes of a Textile Technique
The David Paly Collection
A World of Compelling Cloth

Deceptively simple or fantastically intricate, ikat technique has been used for many centuries to create extravagant costumes and cloths of deep cultural meaning. The distinctively blurred, feathered or jagged patterns of ikat-dyed textiles are found across much of the world - from Japan in the east to Central and South America in the west, with vast areas of South-east Asia, India, Central Asia and the Middle East in between. The traditional patterns still hold cultural relevance today in significant parts of the long-established ikat-weaving areas. Textile artists and fashion designers in many and varied countries have taken ikat in new directions, respecting traditional forms and palettes while creatively diverging from them.
This is the first time all the different iterations of this textile have been comprehensively brought together in one volume, drawing from the wide-ranging collection of David Paly. It is a journey across the world through the lens of ikat.

my old/beautiful book collection
the pretty books shelves
Tumblr media Tumblr media
my Tolkien collection
Tumblr media
vintage fiction
Tumblr media
antique and vintage Bible study books
Tumblr media
I have very few truly old books, but more than I remembered are from the early 20th century. List of titles and more details under the cut
pretty books shelves
Reader’s Digest editions: Little Women (Alcott), Tales from the Arabian Nights, Emma & Pride and Prejudice (Austen), Jane Eyre (Brontë), The Last of the Mohicans (Cooper), The Adventures of Robin Hood (Creswick), Two Years Before the Mast (Dana), David Copperfield, Oliver Twist & A Tale of Two Cities (Dickens), The Robe (Douglas), The Adventures, The Further Adventures, The Memoirs, & The Return of Sherlock Holmes (Doyle), A Passage to India (Forster), The House of the Seven Gables, The Scarlet Letter & Twice-Told Tales (Hawthorne), Kim (Kipling), The Sea Wolf (London), The Song of Hiawatha and other poems (Longfellow), Anne of Green Gables (Montgomery), A Tree Grows in Brooklyn (Smith), Kidnapped (Stevenson), Uncle Tom’s Cabin (Stowe), A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court & Innocents Abroad (Twain), A Journey to the Centre of the Earth & Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Verne)
The Confessions of Saint Augustine—E. B. Pusey translation, Franklin Library edition. This was a Christmas gift from my parents and @bluesidedown has the same one
The Pilgrim’s Progress (Bunyan)—CBN University Press Christian Classics. I don’t actually remember where I got this one but most likely from my dad.
Through the Looking Glass (Carroll)—Heritage Press edition with slipcover and illustrations by John Tenniel. Again, probably from my dad but not 100% sure (he gives me a LOT of books).
The Complete Canterbury Tales (Chaucer)—F. H. Hill translation, Arcturus books with slipcover and illustrations by Edward Burne-Jones and William Morris. Another Christmas gift where Blue and I got matching copies from our parents.
Heretics & Orthodoxy (Chesterton)—Hendrickson Christian Classics. Again, a Christmas gift from my parents.
Nemesis & The Mirror Crack’d From Side to Side (Christie)—Heron Books. Another one I can’t remember the origin of.
The Prairie (Cooper)—Easton Press collector’s edition. From my parents, Christmas this year. This is pretty much the handsomest book I own.
Great Expectations (Dickens)—Chatham River Press. Based on the inscription on the flyleaf this belonged to my dad first. Probably I got it as a gift or in his thinning of his collection.
The Scarlet Pimpernel (Orczy)—International Collector’s Library. Another of unknown origin.
Quo Vadis (Sienkiewicz)—International Collector’s Library. It amuses me that in organizing these books alphabetical by author’s last name, these two matching editions still ended up side by side.
Treasure Island (Stevenson)—Children’s Classics, illustrated by Milo Winter.
Treasure Island–Prince Otto–Strange Case of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde–Kidnapped–The Black Arrow–The Master of Ballantrae–David Balfour (Stevenson)—Canterbury Classics omnibus. I actually have most of these in other editions, but I keep this for the ones I don’t have elsewhere.....and keep the other editions too because I am a book-dragon.
The Prince and the Pauper (Twain)—Portland House Illustrated Classics, illustrated by Franklin Booth. Not sure where I got this one.
The Greek Myths (Graves)—Folio Society, two volumes in slipcover. These were a Christmas gift from my parents a couple years ago, because I collect fairy tales and folk tales and suchlike.
Tolkien
These are mostly newer Houghton Mifflin or HarperCollins editions. The Silmarillion has Ted Naismith illustrations; Children of Húrin has Alan Lee illustrations, as do the covers of LotR; The Hobbit and LotR have Tolkien’s original illustrations and maps, and Roverandom has cover art by him as well; and Bilbo’s Last Song, Farmer Giles of Ham, The Adventures of Tom Bombadill, and Smith of Wooton Major are all illustrated by Pauline Baynes.
vintage fiction (top down, left column first)
Malory’s Le Morte d’Arthur—Norwood Press, 1911
Stalky & Co. (Kipling)—Macmillan and Co, 1927. Completely leatherbound with gilt spine and seal on the front cover
The Master of Ballantrae & The Black Arrow (Stevenson)—Everyman’s Library, 1938
Popular Fairy Tales (Andersen)—Blackie and Son. No date, but google tells me it’s from sometime in the 30s/40s/50s based on the binding style
Jo’s Boys (Alcott)—The Children’s Press, 1965
Around the World in Eighty Days (Verne)—Dean and Son. No date, but I’m guessing mid-twentieth century
Three Cheers Secret Seven (Blyton)—Brockhampton Press, 1960
The Burgess Animal Book for Children—Little, Brown, and Company. Copyright 1948, though likely printed later
At the Back of the North Wind (MacDonald), The Little Lame Prince (Mulock), King Arthur and his Knights (Frith), All the Mowgli Stories (Kipling)—Junior Deluxe Edtions. Illustrations are copyright 1956, no print dates
The Door in the Wall (de Angeli)—Doubleday. Copyright 1949, no print date
Freckles (Porter)—Grosset & Dunlap, 1916. Very beat up and mostly held together by packing tape on the spine
The Call of the Wild (London)—Grosset & Dunlap, 1910. It has a very faded picture glued to the front cover as part of the original binding, as well as illustrations throughout. Quite worn, with many pages about to or falling out
Kilmeny of the Orchard (Montgomery)—Ryerson, 1947. This was actually printed before the Anne series was entirely published, as the list of Montgomery’s works in the front only includes the first three books in the series
Captains Courageous (Kipling)—Thrushwood Books. Date uncertain, but google tells me probably 1950s
Heidi (Spyri)—Collins, 1958. While this did originally belong to my dad, it’s the copy I read as a kid and has been on my shelf for a long time
The Mark of the Horse Lord (Sutcliff)—Oxford University Press, 1965. I learned in making this list that my copy is probably a first edition, albeit rather beat up from being a school library copy.
Warrior Scarlet (Sutcliff)—Oxford University Press, 1966. I also have a 1973 copy that still has its dust jacket.
Robinson Crusoe (Defoe)—Dent/Dutton, 1966. A beloved favourite copy that I read many times
Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (Verne)—Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1953. Another beloved copy that I read many times, I flatly refuse to part with this one despite having a less faded and beat-up edition because 1) I am dreadfully sentimental and 2) the illustrations in this edition are much better than in the RD edition.
King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table (Lanier)—Illustrated Junior LIbrary. Illustrations copyright 1950, no print date
antique and vintage Bible study books
Young’s Analytical Concordance—per a pencil note on the title page this was published circa. 1937, and it definitely looks the part
The Bible as History in Pictures (Keller)—Published in 1964, this is definitely outdated in terms of archaeological evidence of Bible events but it still fascinates me to see
The New English Bible: New Testament—as a Library Edition, I don’t think this strictly counts as a first edition, but it is definitely an early edition as it was printed in 1961 when the NT translation was completed (OT translation of this version wasn’t completed until 1970)
Exposition of Genesis (Leupold)—Wartburg Press, 1942
The Epistle to the Hebrews (Brown)—Banner of Truth, 1961
Luke the Physician (Ramsay)—Baker Book House, 1956
The Gospel in Ezekiel (Guthrie)—Adam and Charles Black, 1857 (or MDCCCLVII if you prefer). This is the oldest book I own, and while is is now quite beat up - the spine is 80% tape and the front cover has come off completely and been replaced with cardboard - I can tell it was a very handsome book when it was new. The spine is bound in dark blue and brown leather, with gilt lettering and decoration, and the edges of the pages have beautiful multicolour marbling on them.

KAI receives contract to develop new amphibious helicopter
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 10/28/22 - 17:20 in Helicopters
The Administration of the South Korea Defense Acquisition Program (DAPA) announced on October 27 that it signed a contract with Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) of US$ 303.7 million for the "Amphibious Attack Helicopter System Development Project".
The Project to Develop the Amphibious Attack Helicopter System is intended to equip the naval force with a suitable helicopter for amphibious attack and aerial fire support during ground operations. The project is expected to be presented in 2026.
“As a result of the evaluation of the proposal in May, Korea Aerospace Industries Co., Ltd. was selected (to build the helicopter), and after a negotiation period of about four months, the contract was signed in October,” a DAPA statement said today.
The domestic R&D project of the Marine Corps amphibious attack helicopter is in full trajectory, the announcement said.
When this system development project is completed, 20 amphibious attack helicopters will be deployed in the South Korean Marine Corps from the end of the 2020s.
Tumblr media
DAPA is planning to promote the project so that close cooperation with related organizations is achieved when the project starts seriously.
The Head of the DAPA Helicopter Division, Army Brigadier General Lee Jong-hwa, said: “With the development of an amphibious attack helicopter through this project, Marines will have the ability to perform three-dimensional high-speed amphibious operations.”
KAI currently manufactures the MUH-1, or Marine Utility Helicopter, better known as "Marineon". It is the Surion variant amphibious helicopter that KAI has developed to increase the capacity with which the South Korean Marine Corps performs multidimensional operations.
The 'Surion' helicopter is the basis for a number of versions, including marines, police, coast guard, utility and other special purpose applications.
The specifications of the proposed amphibious helicopter or any improvements to the MUH have not been disclosed.

"Is there gas in the car? Yes, there's gas in the car! I think the people down the hall know who you are"
Get along, Kid Charlemagne.
Expies (there are a few): "There's no censorship here, everything is FLITERED! I'm communicating" There's that guy on terminal 11. *"Fox looking over his shoulder"* *paces by the second I log in* *paces by again with armload of food from the food pantry* There's that guy too.
(I've never seen a cartel operate as a civilian institution before, "Newman" (read: my old boss) watching Jaws from a computer in "the compound".)
There was even a cooper 800-NHS, parked *where I entered the safeway parking lot*, who then pulled out ahead of me at that exit later, only to park some few hundred feet down the street. Things I get to experience (instead of being dead) because it's less like "hacker crap" newman, and more like "they die the same day" Escobar. Seem to be a lot of "E"s in the upper echelon drug trade.
I got to see yellow here and yellow there, and instead of hearing "phil" paged every time I got close to Ace Hardware, now it's "Alexander". At Market of Choice now. After this library. After the Dollar Store guy " who "was at waco". And we shouldn't forget "Lee" the pacing library security guy. Or Lee, Phil, Eric etc in the news.
(My least favorite color, and this is for someone's amusement like "newman" if he were backed up by a fortune 500 company, and used to run a drug cartel)
I expect this to continue to be as patronizing as possible, and not reflect my real life experience, values, etc. *More yellow comes up the stairs*
"Make me white, give me notoriety and blonds" Says a drug kingpin kid who watched 30 rock (because polls said a demographic he "belonged to" did, probably), and Last Week Tonight, where they have parliament, and happened to interview the Dalai Lama. From a different roof of the world. And how's that going? The sea of cultural inundation from an ailing empire now being overrun by people from India? The cars. The literal flags. The car company based there.
Edit: Destined to be a monkey at the zoo, like so many other empire protectorates. Same game plan, as any place you can think of. Pakistan? Rhodesia? Australia? Always the same.
*woman with yellow hat and built like a latina, sits on 8 as a rebuttal to my blog* Nope, not kidding at 2:29.
This is what a cartel "gone legit" looks like, around here.
