Men of the Cross (2014) luettu:

Ritariromanssia. Oikeastaan tämä on vahvasti ihan perinteinen seikkailukertomus (varsinkin taistelukohtaukset on kirjoitettu mukaansatempaavasti ja yksityiskohtaisesti), mutta kyllä Henryn ja Stephanin herkkä rakkaustarina kulkee punaisena lankana läpi teoksen.

Henry on siis kirkasotsainen keltanokka, joka on lähtenyt pyhään sotaan isänsä vastusteluista huolimatta ja jolla on kihlattu Alys kotona odottamassa. Stephan on taisteluissa karaistunut seikkailija, jolla on ollut irtosuhde joka toisen ritarin kanssa mutta ei ole koskaan rakastanutrakastanut ketään, kunnes tapaa "hetero"-Henryn.

Tästä seuraa dramaattinen vyyhti, jonka aikana Henryn tunteet Stephania kohtaan vaihtelevat kuumasta kylmään ja ihastuksen huumasta homofobiseen itseinhoon. Ympäristön suunnasta pariin ei kohdistu vaaran tunnetta, mutta Henryn omat synnintuskat ovat pitkään pinnalla. Ylipäätään pidin siitä, että miesten välinen seksi ja rakkaus istui maailmaan luontevasti ja siihen oli viittauksia kaikkialla, ainoastaan välillä oli vaivaannuttavaa kun koko päähenkilöiden lähipiiri innostui kannustamaan miehiä tunnustamaan toisilleen tunteensa. Niinku kiva että ootte allies ja silleen, mutta eikö teillä oo omaa elämää.

Kerronta kulkee sujuvasti eteenpäin suurin piirtein siihen asti, kun sotatoimet "Pyhällä maalla" ajetaan alas, ja viimeistään silloin juoni lässähtää, kun päästään takaisin Manner-Eurooppaan. Kirjan epätoivoisen vimmainen ristiretkikuvaus muuttuu majatalosta toiseen hiippailemiseksi, sotadraama vakoojatrilleriksi. Kun hahmot huokaavat, että kunpa he olisivat menneet suoraa päätä kotiin, on vaikeaa olla eri mieltä.

Ristiretkistä kirja antaa melko tyypillisen kuvan. Tapahtumia seurataan tiukasti kristittyjen (anglonormannien) näkökulmasta, muut ovat niitä Toisia. Sotaretki kuvataan turhana verenvuodatuksena ja hukkareissuna, jossa ei ole voittajia. Tästä huolimatta kuningas Rikhard Leijonamieli on kirjassa liki täydellinen heppu, jota päähenkilöt palvovat. Suoraan sanottuna nautin enemmän kirjan alkupuoliskosta, jolloin Henry ei ollut vielä vallan ytimessä vaan yksi riviritari vain.

Fave colour: It's this very partucular blend of smokey pale blue and lavender, although I'll happily wear pretty much whatever I pick up at the flea market (can't go wrong with black). I love with deep, mossy greens, too.

Currently reading: Veljeni, Leijonamieli (Brothers Lionheart) by Astrid Lindgren out loud to my son. I'm also listening to an audiobook version of the Game Changer series by Rachel Reid. It's an m/m romance novel series about fictional NHL players. I don't know much (anything, really) about hockey but the couples are cute af.

Last Song: I think it was All of This and Nothing by Dave Gahan, a friend from work recommended it to me and it's been playing on repeat for a few days in my cheap, clunky headphones.

Last Series: I'm halfway through Triage at the moment. I like the timeloop setup a lot but I not a 100% sold on Tin and Tol's chemistry yet, call me crazy... I'm also watching The Extraordinary Attorney Woo Young-Woo, Minato's Laundromat, The Eclipse and Love in the Air (it's bad but in a fun way ok).

Last Movie: Prey. It was amazing! And that's coming from someone who's never watched a Predator movie before.

Sweet/Spicy/Savoury: Savoury. I crave chips all the time, tbh.

Currently Working On: Does daydreaming count? I have been playing with this idea of vampire!Kinn and Fae!Porsche while I'm idling at work. Also, I should be thinking about school work. If everything goes according to plan, I should graduate next year. Yikes.

When I was younger I loved to read. But when I got older, reading books became harder with mental health issues and the stress of having more work to do (I kinda have the same issue with video games as well, but it's getting better with New Pokemon Snap and Neo: The World Ends with You later this month.)

For many months now, maybe even over a year, I've thought of getting back to my Warriors (AKA Warrior Cats) reading phase I had as a teen. I know they're not the best written books with repeating tropes and different people writing them, but I like the concept of wild cats having clans, battles, religion and relationships + all the other cat groups the series has and seeing their lives and stuff (but already tired of the "forbidden love between two Clan cats" trope...) And I just love cats.

The last Warriors book I read was Fading Echoes, about 10 years ago. I read the books in English, but since then most of them have been translated to my native language. I still want to read them in English though, as the Finnish translation has some names translated weirdly and incorrectly (and the cats' names have meaning in the series!) For example: ThunderClan > StormClan, Graypool > Graysplotch, Lionheart > Lionmind (lionmind = leijonamieli is a beautiful word in Finnish which is like our equivalent of lionheart, but it doesn't fit Warriors and doesn't match with Fireheart.)

Anyway, for now I'm planning to reread all my Warriors books and then decide if I wanna continue the series. 😼

Veljeni, Leijonamieli (The Brothers Lionheart) by Astrid Lingren

I’m quite sure this was not the very first novel I read, but I clearly remember reading it when I was... 9? Anywho, I remember really liking it a lot, even though the themes of death and the other side went somewhat over my head when I was that young.

It is an absolutely beautiful, but grim, story of two brothers who don’t let anything separate them, in this world or the next one. Nothing I say here will do it enough justice.

Started up BG3 the other day and made a new Tav. His name is Karl Leijonamieli he is half-orc and half-elf paladin with dyslexia, who is having a bad time with the worms.

And I love him already.
