Wreckless Eric — Leisureland (Tapete)
Tumblr media
youtube
Wreckless Eric (Goulden) almost died a couple of years ago, first the COVID, then the lungs, then a heart-attack and finally a very long recovery. It’s the kind of experience that might invite introspection about life. Indeed, this first album since is a ruminating look back at the blighted seaside English towns where Goulden grew up, with their run-down amusements and cut-rate retail establishments, their environmental damage and their low expectations.
In “Standing Rock,” an early single, he enumerates the failings of such places in fine detail, so that you can feel the crushing ugly ordinariness closing in. Yet, there’s also a bit of hope, a way out, in the same way Goulden got out, through music. In his cracked and wry tenor, he sings about, “John, Paul, George and Allan writing songs while people sleep/John, Paul, George and Allan being different and deep, in the town of Standing Water.” Not quite the Beatles, but close enough.
“Southern Rock” captures the longing, the restless grass-must-be-greener agitation of a young man in a dead end town, as Goulden listens to American music and imagines escape: “Listening to Southern rock in southwest England in 1971/dreaming about Memphis Tennessee and the California sun/San Francisco, New York City, California girls/I didn’t know where anything was in this god almighty fucked up world.” Goulden sublimely aw-fuck-it delivery makes nearly everything sound sardonic, but there’s a bottom note of pure yearning here. The song smolders most of the way, and then bursts into flame in a rollicking chorus.
Leisureland includes a lot of instrumental interludes that capture, in various ways, the places Goulden left and the sounds that lured him away. “Inside the Majestic” rides a drone of movie theater organ, its programmed drums shushing and shuffling like scuffing shoes.  “Esplanade by the Moonlight” incorporates the sounds of seagull and waves and spooky electro atmospherics. “On the Move” has automotive sounds rumbling through it, as a Casio beat rattles with suave, manufactured assurance. It’s not a new thing for Goulden — Construction Time and Demolition had its two “Mexican Fenders” instrumentals — but there are more of them than usual and they seem of a piece with its aim to conjure lost worlds.
It wouldn’t be a Wreckless Eric album without a couple of wry, sarcastic bangers. “Zoom (Glittering in the Sun)” careens with the scratchy, punchy, psychedelic garage bliss of earlier Wreckless Eric tunes (including the one you can hear in the Expedia ad), and “Drag Time,” is quite simply one of his best ever. It’s a swirling, circling, celebratory rush, with a truly sing-along chorus. (“Get yourself a one way ticket on the merry-go-round.”) You can hear Amy Rigby singing along as the sound surges in a dizzying crescendo. And so, the past circles back to incorporate the right now, and the merry-go-round keeps spinning and Wreckless Eric is still, blessedly, aboard.

Here are 5 things you must do to get a taste of Dubai’s nightlife:
Tumblr media
Driving down Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, a long eight-lane road that was lit up and busy with traffic even at two in the morning. The designer facades of the tall buildings on either side of the street reflected light. In no other place did I feel as safe returning home at 4 a.m. as I did when a student in Dubai, where I frequently spent the evenings discovering the city's clubs and hangout spots. The nature of Dubai's nights is so distinct from that of Dubai's days that it seems like a completely separate city. One has to get an emirates visa for Nigerian citizens before they can enjoy Dubai’s nightlife.
1.  Go Club-Hopping
Tumblr media
Dubai's club scene is extremely amazing and draws tourists from all over the world. Every type of nightclub can be found across the city, from opulent to edgy, so on Friday nights, you have a tonne of options! Large screens for game nights are available at Barasti (Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort), Chi@The Lodge (Al Nasr Leisureland) has a chic atmosphere and fantastic music, Kasbar (Al Sufouh Road) is a hip spot with authentic Arabic décor, and Nasimi Beach (Atlantis) offers a breathtaking view of Atlantis as a backdrop.
2. Order Late-night Shawarma
Tumblr media
Without a Shawarma run at midnight, no trip to Dubai is truly complete. Lebanese eateries that serve this delectable pork wrap in the early hours of the morning are the spots that are bustling with the most bustle after midnight. Near the sidewalk, where the waiters collect orders from cars, many people will halt their vehicles. Aroos Damascus and Al Shami Restaurant (Al Muraqqabat Road, Deira), Al Mallah (Satwa), and Reem al Bawadi (Jumeirah Road), among others, are the greatest locations for late-night Shawarma.
3.   Drive Through the City by Night
Given the excellent roads, street lighting, and well-organized traffic, driving in Dubai is a delight. Driving at night is a fantastic treat since there is less traffic, better music playing on the radio, lovely roads to go on, and a glittering city to admire. Al Mamzar, where a creek separates Dubai from Sharjah and a lovely Corniche (promenade) draws people for leisurely after-dinner strolls, is my favorite location for a long drive. You can find Filli Café directly across from this bustling location, where you can finish off your late-night trip with a cup of traditional masala chai. highly advisable
4.   Walk along the Marina
Tumblr media
Dubai Marina is a waterfront surrounded by speedboats, luxury yachts, and boats in the more modern area of the city. Families, couples, and friends enjoy the lights from the high towers as they are exquisitely mirrored on the crystal-clear seas as they stroll along the walkway, where European-style cafes are bustling with activity all night. This is a really beautiful way to experience Dubai's nightlife.
5.   Take a Puff of Sheesha at a Lounge
Tumblr media
What would a trip to Dubai be without a sheesha cigarette? Many people still like evenings at quieter sheesha lounges, which typically have multiple screens showing live football or cricket matches, despite Dubai's reputation for having exciting nightclubs and a fantastic food and beverage scene. In addition, they frequently include lounge chairs, pool tables, board games, and video games for a laid-back evening with friends. And of course, sheesha—or hookah, as it is more widely known—in a huge variety of tastes and sizes! This is a typical Dubai night out and is a lot of fun, especially with friends!
Good to Know
In Dubai, the weekend is Friday and Saturday—not Sunday!
Tuesdays or Wednesdays are often designated as Lady's Nights in clubs and pubs. To get the best deal, schedule your girls' nights out on these days.
The Dubai government is very tough about drinking and driving, and on the weekends there are many checkpoints to catch drunk drivers and severely punish them. Since taxis are often available close to popular nightlife areas, returning home is both safe and simple.
In Dubai, the drinking age is 21, in Abu Dhabi, it is 18, and it is forbidden in Sharjah.
Drinking is not permitted in undesignated or unlicensed areas and those who do so face harsh penalties.
Apply emirates visa for Nigeria nationals to enjoy all the tourist places and attractions in Dubai.
In Dubai, there is something to do every single hour of the day or night. What are you still holding out for? Let your hair down and take full advantage of Dubai's vibrant nightlife and for this, you have to take an emirates visa for Nigeria passport holders.

The Big Slice: A Pizza Tale on Paisley High Street
A new venture could be about to unfold on a corner of the High Street, directly opposite the ever-popular Leisureland arcade. What was once the quaint Malatso coffee shop was now brimming with the promise of a new beginning, a haven for pizza lovers and hungry passersby. The proprietor of this new venture envisioned a vibrant exterior that would not only catch the eye but also stir the senses.…

Listed: Amy Rigby
Tumblr media
The singer-songwriter Amy Rigby got her start in the late 1980s and early 1990s in spry, New York-based country throwback groups Last Roundup and The Shams. Starting with 1996’s Diary of a Mod Housewife, Rigby has steadily released solo work that can break your heart with the contagious ache in her dry, distinctive voice or make you laugh out loud at the concussive put-downs she doles out. Rigby has a particular knack for turning the quotidian mythic and reminding us that the mythologized are ultimately just some guys. The music has remained rooted in country, but not confined by it. Hers is a guitar-forward style that can incorporate the bright highs of acoustic pop rock, crunchy roadhouse grooves, R&B, and even jazz. Alex Johnson, in his review of Rigby’s most recent release, Hang In There With Me, called the album “tough, witty rock and roll…[that] catalogs a lifetime of drags, uncertainties and disasters, but returns, again and again, to the people, moments and experiences that make it worthwhile, or bearable enough.”
Here are some things that Rigby has been listening to lately.
Warmduscher — “Eight Minute Machines”
Discovered via an online review of their Brooklyn show last year, one that made me want so badly to be sweating in a crowd with this band onstage.
Amelia White — “Get To The Show”
youtube
One of my Nashville pals and I love this track from her latest album. Amelia is always out working and rocking, written with the great Gwil Owen… Sometimes I really do miss Nashville!
Daniel Romano — “Impossible Green”
You know when you discover an artist and think wow, this kid’ll go far, then realize they’ve been at it for years, made tons of records, play all the instruments, write, sing and tour their ass off? That’s how it is for me with Daniel Romano. This track comes from his 2017 album Modern Pressure.
Gina Birch — I Play My Bass Loud
youtube
Gina’s debut solo album came out just a year ago — I’ve been a fan since hearing the Raincoats in the late 1970s and getting to see them live when they came to NYC back then. She’s one of my heroines for being an artist and uniquely herself in whatever it is she does — music, video, painting. The bass and her opening line: “Sometimes I wake up, and I wonder — what is my job?” Pure Gina/genius!
Wreckless Eric — Inside The Majestic
He’s my husband and labelmate so what the hell — this is from his most recent album Leisureland. People know Eric for his voice and lyrics and guitar, but this is an instrumental track that’s just glorious. I want to see the movie it soundtracks, or at very least a choreographed dance routine with Eric at the piano in a tuxedo.
Michele Stodardt — “These Bones”
youtube
A big attraction for me with the Magic Numbers was Michele Stodart’s bass playing and cool vocal contributions, love hearing and seeing her do her solo thing.
Meshell Ndgeocello — The Omnichord Real Book
youtube
For the last dozen years, I was bartending/selling books at a small shop in New York’s Hudson Valley. The first time Meshell came in I was tongue-tied, knowing her as a bass playing legend and poet, and thought if she lives here, it’s kind of the center of the universe, right? I really hope to see her play live sometime.
TBHQ — “Planet of Pain” from TBHQ
A radio host on a show I guested on was playing this great track when I walked in. “I really like that,” I thought, and then realized it was my daughter Hazel Rigby who records under the name TBHQ. She’s been performing and recording for years, often instrumental/noise but her voice and lyrics are so wise and honest.
Dory Previn — “The Comedian”
youtube
There’s never been anyone like Dory Previn, the pain and ridiculousness of being a human so acutely depicted in song. There’s a new documentary about her, On My Way To Where, by my friend Julia Greenberg with animated segments by Emily Hubley, just making its debut out there. She had a fascinating, fruitful, difficult beautifully productive life and I can’t wait to learn more about her.
Mary Timony — “Dominoes” from Untame The Tiger
Love everything about Mary Timony’s latest solo album Untame the Tiger — the songs, the guitar playing, her voice, the cover!
Swamp Dogg — “Synthetic World”
youtube
One of my favorite tracks of all time. Jerry Williams (Swamp Dogg) is still out bringing his music to the people. I’m looking forward to seeing the new documentary Swamp Dogg Gets His Pool Painted — there’s just nobody like this guy.

Out in the middle of the woods, sunburnt to hell from two days of lounging in the river in the nude. We're eating blueberries and blackberries off the bush and cooking food together. Many beers have been drunk, songs have been sung, weed has been smoked, and I am happy. The perfect weekend at Leisureland.
