re: cruel summer tape
it's a small community and anyone and everyone with any power in that community was at that party.
plus there's probably some underlying prejudice against Isabella in a small pnw town.
Ahh that’s right, I forgot Luke’s dad owns like all of the businesses in town. I’m so ready to see what happens next week!!

Hi there! I was wondering: on the Libby app, there's the option on books you don't have yet to get notified if that book is ever added to the catalogue. When we hit that button, do you all get to see that as a way for us to "request" a book? Or should we still send in a formal request for the books through the form on your website?
This sounds so confusing, hopefully you understand what I'm trying to ask, but if not just say so and I'll try to explain more!
Thanks so much for all you do 🩷💞
We see those notify me tags! it definitely functions pretty similarly to the request form in the way of ‘someone wants us to have this in the library’ so we should put consider adding it to our wishlists.
one of the reasons we have the request form to start with is that we were asking people what they were interested in before we really launched - so before we we on Libby. now that we are, the notify me tags are pretty convenient in that they show us all at once how many people are interested in certain titles.
the only reason you’d really need/want to fill out the request form as well is if you have something you really want to say to add context to that request. for example, we’ve had authors say ’this is my book!’ but otherwise you really don’t have to do both.

So excited for Remarkable Retirement's audiobook!! If I request my library get it, would my library be able to get it on Libby?
I think so! I’m not terribly knowledgeable about how that works, but I think libraries often get physical media to have in-house and then use Libby to provide media digitally?
(if any librarians or Libby users follow me and know more about this, please let us know!)
currently the audiobook is only available as a digital download, BUT my publisher is also working to get it available on CD and possibly cassette since they know people are hankering for physical media in an age where digital providers can simply rip your content away with no warning! so if your library doesn’t do audiobooks digitally in-house, they may be able to order a physical copy later on (but don’t ask when lol, not sure how long this will take!)
thanks so much for your question!

Why do you like this show so much. Is it really that good?
The Ghost and Molly McGee is personally my favorite show and, in my opinion, the best series Disney has made in a long time.
Tumblr media
It's funny, charming, endearing and has fantastic characters and memorable songs. Plus the cast (Dana Snyder as Scratch and Ashly Burch as Molly, for example) are incredible.
The ever growing bond between Molly and Scratch is the definite selling point and my favorite part, as I'm a sucker for human/non-human relationships. They are best friends through and through who have shown that they would literally do anything for each other and have been shown to be very protective of one another.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
To me, they also have a cute uncle+niece type relationship going on which I love, as I adore paternal bonds, especially between father and daughter and uncle and niece.
I also believe that the McGee's has the best depiction of family dynamic. Of course, this is my own opinion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There are also strong life messages and great LGBTQIA+ and disability representation. I highly recommend. The full season 1 is on Disney+, with a second season currently in the making.
If you don't have Disney+, you can watch it >>here<<.

👀 and 🎨 for the hunger games au please hehe
👀 What’s an idea you had for a fic that you never did anything with?
I wanted to do a "Knives Out" AU storyline for 911, but I didn't want to make any of them villains lol, so the twist would be rubbish. I could probably switch it out and do a "Clue" AU if I ever go back to it.
🎨 Show us a sneak peek from a WIP!
Athena must find something new, she freezes, her eyes narrowing as she reads. “You had another brother?”
“Daniel.” There’s an upside Maddie didn’t consider; if and when she dies, she’ll see him again. “He died when he was ten. He got these headaches, and he couldn’t keep any food down. My parents tried everything, but nothing worked.”
“I’m sorry, you were so young,” Athena lays her hand over the page. “The Capitol exploits dead relatives, they want a sob story, a way to connect to you, no matter how unethical.”
“I remember how they treated Bobby in the interviews—”
Athena hums. “And that was only half of it. In the arena, they manipulated jabberjays into replicating his family’s screams.”
“Oh, my God.” Maddie gasps. “That’s horrible.”
“You have to be ready, for when they use your grief and suffering against you.” Athena instructs her. “They’ll have pictures of your daughter, plastered on billboards and television screens; it’s a way to wear you down, but you can’t let it.”
“I won’t.” Maddie remains strong. “I’ll be ready.”
If somebody asks nicely, I might tell you the other tributes...

hi !! omg i've always loved your writing and think you're so talented, i always loved your work, esp the light hearted stuff but i just read the great divide and omg!!!! i'm absolutely blown away, it was so sweet and so, i know its overused, but so real to how depression feels and the way thoughts build up and isolation occurs and sort of snowballs into something much larger into itself. not to get like, dark in an ask box, i just found it..........an accurate depiction of what a major depressive disorder and suicide ideation/passive suicidal feels like and i appreciate it a lot. youre really cool and i'm always excited for what's cooking in your kitchen. i hope my divide shortens somewhat, and it certainly does temporarily when i read brilliant works like yours!
thank you so much for this, truly ❤️
when writing this fic, it was like a diary entry into my subconscious. i wrote thoughts and feelings into this fic that i've never spoken aloud, not to my therapist, not to my closest friends. and honestly i was scared to post it. i was nervous about what people would think, or nervous that they'd judge me. the fact that it's resonated with you and others makes me feel like a weight lifted off my shoulders, like i'm not so alone in this world. (it's dramatic, but true!)
i 100% know that your divide will shorten over time, as will mine, and as will everyone who's going through this. ❤️

Hi how are you! I'm super curious about what books you like to read and some recent faves maybe? (I'm totally not just trying to get recs)
Ah! I am flattered and also so sorry in advance (insert the "oh good, you will regret this" meme here).
I haven't been reading much lately, because cdramas, but I will claim Vanessa Len's debut Only a Monster and its sequel in the in-progress series, Never a Hero, as my most recent faves. It's got urban fantasy, time travel, parallel world sort of stuff going on with a young adult/coming of age, finding and reconciling oneself as a product of two very different cultures, sort of story. It's clever and emotional and romantic and exciting and tragic and basically I loved it. I can't wait for the next one.
Cut to spare the unwilling from scrolling-induced RSI:
My Libby app also reminds me that I enjoyed Lex Croucher's most recent historical romance, Trouble, very much, along with the earlier ones, Infamous and Reputation. Croucher is funny and I like her approach to addressing the social justice issues inherent to the genre and setting of the (nominally) regency romance. My favourite regencies are funny - see also Faro's Daughter, The Corinthian and Sylvester by Georgette Heyer. Amanda Quick's regencies are also usually good for this, too.
I have only read three Kylie Chan books (martial arts fantasy) but I ate them up with a spoon and also was mad at myself for not realising sooner that it's a series of serieses, but I read all of Earth to Hell, Hell to Heaven and Heaven to Wudang in three days straight. There's at least one series before that one and at least another one after, but it was perfectly enjoyable from where I started except now I know spoilers for the earlier books. But that's a me problem.
The Locked Tomb series by Tamsyn Muir - a recent enough fave and a rec, if you like your orphans traumatised, your sci-fi magical and your world-building drip fed by a capable and merciless author. If you don't entirely hate it on first read you have much enjoyment coming on second and third reads. The series is not yet finished but there is already several lifetimes of fanworks to tide us over until the next book(s) come out.
Some older faves, in no particular order:
Martha Wells' standalone fantasy novels, and her Ill-Rien novels. The Wheel of the Infinite and The City of Bones are very enjoyable standalones. And The Element of Fire is just *chef's kiss* if you're an enjoyer of angry, feral young women characters and hot, competent men with swords who can actually take directions.
Douglas Adams' everything, and most especially the Dirk Gently books.
Tom Robbins. How to explain Tom Robbins. The universe said to itself sometime in the early 20th century, let's make an American guy who can write women because he genuinely respects and loves them, and he will also write the goofiest, weirdest, most high-concept, new-age, sexual, gross, magical realist fiction the Pacific North-West in the 1970s and 80s will ever produce. Still Life With Woodpecker is essentially a journal of the author's experience with his new typewriter inserted into the body of his latest novel, a modern fairytale involving environmentalism and pyramids. Jitterbug Perfume is a historical fantastical epic about sex, immortality, beets and fragrance, amongst other things. Half Asleep In Frog Pyjamas is about a stockbroker and a psychic and frogs, among other things.
And to finish, I will rec Iain M Banks. The Algebraist is a standalone sci-fi novel and if you like it, you will almost certainly like the Culture series. The Culture series doesn't have to be read in publication order, or even in-universe chronological order; each book is standalone in its own right, but some reference in-universe historical events that are the subject of one or more of the other books. For first-time readers, I would recommend The Player of Games to start with. As well as being a fun story, I think it's a good introduction to the concept of the Culture, and if you enjoy the themes and motifs etc you will see them again in other Culture books. In no particular order, some of my faves are Excession, Inversions, Surface Detail, The Hydrogen Sonata, and Matter.
If you like any of these in particular, let me know, and I can dig around for some more recs like them!
Happy reading!

This is How You Lose the Time War really is a good book!! Sucks that it's a minimum 6 weeks wait to borrow for you but it's worth the wait (hopefully you like it if you do read it/listen to it)
ahhh i'm excited to get it when it comes around! and it's only 5 weeks now since one of the library systems got 8 additional copies haha.
also thankfully i have multiple library cards because if i only had one for the seattle public library it would be a 14 week wait even though they have 64 copies :')

I know this is the Take Personal Responsibility for Systemic Issues website, but I keep seeing weirdly guilt trippy posts about libraries and ebook licenses, which are a labyrinth from hell and not actually something you personally need to feel guilty about. here are a few facts about ebook licenses you may not know:
in Libby/Overdrive, which currently operates in most US public libraries, ebook licenses vary widely in how much they cost and what their terms are. some ebooks get charged per use, some have a set number of uses before the license runs out, and others have a period of time they're good for (usually 1-2 years) with unlimited checkouts during that period before they expire. these terms are set by the publisher and can also vary from book to book (for instance, a publisher might offer two types of licenses for a book, and we might buy one copy of a book with a set number of uses we want to have but know won't move as much, and another copy with a one year unlimited license for a new bestseller we know will be really moving this year.)
you as a patron have NO way of knowing which is which.
ebook licenses are very expensive compared to physical books! on average they run about 60 bucks a pop, where the same physical book would cost us $10-15 and last us five to ten years (or much longer, if it's a hardcover that doesn't get read a lot.)
if your library uses Hoopla instead, those are all pay per use, which is why many libraries cap checkouts at anywhere between 2-10 per month.
however.
this doesn't mean you shouldn't use ebooks. this doesn't mean you should feel guilty about checking things out! we buy ebook licenses for people to use them, because we know that ebook formats are easier for a lot of people (more accessible, more convenient, easier for people with schedules that don't let them get into the library.) these are resources the library buys for you. this is why we exist. you don't need to feel guilty about using them!
things that are responsible for libraries being underfunded and having to stretch their resources:
government priorities and systemic underfunding of social services that don't turn a profit and aren't easily quantified
our society's failure to value learning and pleasure reading for their own sake
predatory ebook licensing models
things that are not responsible for libraries being underfunded:
individual patron behavior
I promise promise promise that your personal library use is not making or breaking your library's budget. your local politicians are doing that. capitalism is doing that. you are fine.
(if you want to help your local library, the number one thing you can do is to advocate for us! talk to your city or county government about how much you like the library. or call or write emails or letters. advocate for us locally. make sure your state reps know how important the library is to you. there are local advocacy groups in pretty much every state pushing for library priorities. or just ask your local librarian. we like to answer questions!
also, if you're in Massachusetts, bill h3239 would make a huge difference in letting us negotiate ebook prices more fairly. tell your rep to vote for it!)

❌ ⭐ 🍏 + Libby and Maxim, if you please! <3
Libby:
❌ What kind of things would end any relationship for them? Is there a history behind why these things bother them? Could they ever take someone back despite this? If so or if not, why?
She dumps August for being a death eater so I guess that. But it doesn't really end the story for them... She still loves him and would most likely take him back if given the option.
*
⭐ What is your OC afraid of? Any crippling phobias or some such? How do they act when scared and what helps them calm down? Does anyone ever find your OC scary? Why?
The war in general and her close ones dying. She's also afraid that her life is gonna end up being like her parents are planning for her. She tries to fight these fears by taking action against them, but we all know how well that will turn out for her anyway. 😔😔 Spoiler, it all happens to her and changes her as a person a lot.
She can be scary if you try to hurt her loved ones. But most scary she is later in life as a mother. Jenny finds her scary very often. She's strict and judgemental and doesn't explain to her why.
*
🍏 Does your OC have any triggers? What is the history behind these triggers and are they related to any disorders or mental illnesses? In what ways does your OC react to being triggered?
After the war the whole wizarding community is her trigger and her daughter being a witch is her nightmare come true. She doesnt deal with it and it's definitely trauma related! I mean she doesn't ever talk about her past or the fact that she's a witch to anyone.
I think her children (specially Jenny) can easily trigger her also by doing something rebellious that puts the family in bad light. On those occasions she yells at them and gives them a speech.
Tumblr media
Maxim:
❌ What kind of things would end any relationship for them? Is there a history behind why these things bother them? Could they ever take someone back despite this? If so or if not, why?
It's all about the context. I can see him being forgiving if there's enough love for quite big things. Falling out of love would be the deal breaker and at that point it would be the end and no taking backs.
*
⭐ What is your OC afraid of? Any crippling phobias or some such? How do they act when scared and what helps them calm down? Does anyone ever find your OC scary? Why?
When he was young, he learned the truth about his mothers past and it scared him at first a lot. His dads had long talks with him where they tried to explain viveka's character more and with time maxim learned to accept that you can do bad things and still she loved him. It's still a secret fear for him that she would show up and be the evil version he had imagined.
Just in general people finding out about his mothers identity scares him. He's scared of judgement. He also doesnt like high places.
*
🍏 Does your OC have any triggers? What is the history behind these triggers and are they related to any disorders or mental illnesses? In what ways does your OC react to being triggered?
People being judgemtal and mean. He can take it but usually doesn't like the type of people and won't choose their company (jimmy is an expection to the rule as he is different type of mean and he knows why).
He also doesn't like gory things things and avoids torture horror.
