Each year, the senior class at our local college has to do a real world project to solve a problem or provide support for an activity in the community. I've submitted a few proposals over the years but none were chosen. This year my proposal was for a software tracking app to manage the space for readers/knitters and any other activities in my library. I suppose I could do it myself but my software skills are a tad rusty. My project got chosen and I now have regular meetings with the developers.

Note
Do you have any tips for an aspiring librarian who’s going to college in a few months?
my first instinct upon reading this ask was to give you some good but fairly generic advice about getting library experience via your school's work study program, exploring different career paths within the library umbrella, interning at your local public library if possible, and so on & so forth
but then i realized that that is the sort of information you can find pretty much anywhere & i will instead give you my personal insight into what has helped me be successful in my current library role.
do whatever weird shit you are passionate about with your whole heart & soul, because you will learn invaluable skills without even intending to
what i mean by all that is that my current position as the assistant manager of a small, rural library branch is really just twenty-nine different jobs in a trench coat. i'm alternately an it specialist, a graphic designer, a career counselor, a preschool teacher, a customer service agent, or whatever else a particular situation demands.
and so much of my current skillset is a result of spending my high school & college years doing random nerd bullshit on the internet.
i'm dead serious. my ability to troubleshoot basically any possible tech issue, my knowledge of graphic design software, my extensive research capabilities, my written communication skills, and my absolute certainty that if i don't know how to do something, i can figure it out if you give me fifteen minutes to poke around on google are all products not of my formal education or work experience, but of the countless hours i have devoted to online nerd bullshit
enjoy college. explore your passions. get super into modding minecraft, or archiving lost media, or formatting fanzines, or literally whatever niche nonsense speaks to you. librarianship is a career of quick thinking & problem solving skills, and you'll best develop those doing something you truly care about
in the words of the mountain goats, the things you do for love are gonna come back to you one by one

my biggest advice to anyone starting college right now (or if into research) is to get a reference management software. i recommend you Mandeley ! you create an account (for free) and it records all you bibliographic sources. it let's you create citations automatically, so it serves you the headache of doing it manually. AND the biggest plus is that you can use it as a personal data base. you can upload the PDFs and highlight and annotate them from Mendeley itself + add tags so you can search for your papers later. the biggest plus about Mendeley it's that the search engine let's you search not only by title or author, but it reads the paper completely and shows you all mentions inside the text matching your search.
basically, it's like creating your digital library all in one place. if you're just starting out with research, you can upload all you read and in no time have a decently sized database that will facilitate any new research project you have! don't be like me and start using it in your third year because now i have to move all my files manually lol

Spotlight: Courtney Christensen
Each month we spotlight a woman or girl in tech who inspires us. This month we are highlighting Courtney Christensen. Courtney is a Senior Engineering Manager at Linden Lab in charge of the teams that build most of the web pieces for Second Life. She is also a long-time mentor with C4K and Tech-Girls. Courtney has this to say about her mentoring experiences - "How can you give back to your community, make the world a better place, and experience your own and another person's joy all at the same time? For me, by mentoring. My mentees are my ripples in the pond, they will help me make an even bigger difference than I ever could alone. Plus they are clever, awesome, funny people and it's fun to spend time with them."
Tumblr media
What drives your interest in technology? I can't remember a time when I didn't want to know how things work. I didn't take apart the hairdryer or the alarm clock, but I constantly took apart pens. I drew things and tried to get closer to real life. I used tools and I read books and how-to guides. I also always played video games. Once I put together that I could program games, I was hooked. Now that I'm in tech, I still love solving puzzles, but I realize that technology permeates all aspects of our lives. I want to be helping build the things that power our modern world.
What do you remember about your first coding experience? My older brother sent us a family computer when I was in middle school. I thought I was such a hacker poking around at the DOS prompt loading shareware games and adding HTML to make my profile on a Jeopardy site sparkle. I bought an old BASIC programming book from the library book sale and taught myself from that leading up to my QBASIC class in high school. I loved telling a computer what to do and having it dance to my commands. It's still so much fun to get into a code puzzle.
What was your pathway to working in/studying technology? I have a fairly stereotypical path to technology. I wanted to play video games and take things apart. Then I learned to do some programming. That chose my college major, Computer Science. And I got a job in the field right out of college.
Why is it important to get more girls and women interested in technology? I've got a few different answers to this. My heart answer is that I love to be there to fan the flame of someone else's endorphin rush at discovery. Learning is so much fun and helping someone else to learn is amazing. The corporate answer is that women are half or more of the target audience, getting women and girls into designing the products you're trying to sell them makes better products. Women on teams makes better teams, but women designing a product for women means you won't have the pitfalls like VR controllers being too big for typically smaller hands or cellphones that can't fit my face!
Who inspires you to pursue your passion? I really like some of the stories of dangerous women from history. Grace Hopper and Ada Lovelace have been great inspirations for me. But today, I've got female CTOs at big companies to look up to. And closer to me, I've got female friends in technology leadership like Ann Lewis. It might be coming to mind because it's Mother's Day as I answer this question, but my mom has always encouraged what she calls my "science brain".
What most excites you about the future of technology? We're making science fiction into science fact daily. I'm most excited about tech that makes the world a better place.
What advice would you give to your younger self? I would tell my early career self to change technology sectors and be intentional with your job choices so you don't get typecast. This might be on me and in my own brain, but after 2 jobs in web development, I got labeled "web developer" instead of just "software developer". I would also pursue dreams before you get used to your salary! And make sure to keep learning, don't let yourself get comfortable at being an expert at one thing because times change, technologies move on, and learning new things is a skill that can dull with lack of use.

ohhhhh boy I get to tell this story now!! Admittedly it’s not as funny as opening a black hole or bringing an IT guy to tears of joy, but I have my own story of stumping the IT guys
so my first year of college, I needed a laptop and my mom was about to get herself a new one anyway so she gave me her MacBook Air. She gave it to me the day I moved in, since she had needed some time to download all her pictures onto USB drives before I could wipe it. So after unpacking all my furniture I plugged in the laptop, and looked up a tutorial on my phone for how to wipe it. But apparently whatever tutorial I looked up was too strong, because instead of deleting the MacBook’s memory, I accidentally deleted its entire software system. My entire laptop had been reduced to a black screen with a blinking white question mark in the center. My university has an IT section in the library, so I brought it there the next day, and the guy was utterly baffled by how I’d managed to do this. Luckily, he helped me redownload the last software system my MacBook had been running on. Mind you, I was a freshman in 2022 and due to my mom’s general disdain for software updates, the last system my laptop had been running on was Yosemite, a program from 2015. That in and of itself also got quite the reaction from the IT guy, but he showed me how to update my laptop on my own and sent me on my way. Also as a side note, since I have an iPhone I decided to make things easier by just logging into my MacBook with the same iCloud account. I got back to my dorm, went to update my laptop, and couldn’t because the laptop kept saying I had the “wrong Apple ID password”. For some reason, every time I input the password on my laptop, it was airdropping a six digit code to my phone. I’m sure the more technologically literate of you already know what that means, but I personally don’t know dick about shit so I had to return to the IT department to ask for help. The people there recognized me, and tried their best to help, but ultimately also couldn’t figure out what was happening. We even tried changing my password a few times just to be sure it was correct, but to no avail. They told me to call Apple support, and once again sent me on my way.
so I went back to my dorm, and called Apple support. After a few minutes of deliberation, the man on the phone realized the problem: nowadays in order to update the iOS on your laptop, you need two factor authentication. But two factor authentication didn’t exist in the days of Yosemite. So where normally there would be a box asking for my password AND a box asking for the six-digit code, I only had the former. We both sat there in silence for about five minutes trying to figure out what to do, until eventually I got tired of waiting and tried the dumbest possible solution on a hunch. I typed my password into the box, got the error message as well as the six-digit code on my phone, then re-typed my passcode into the box immediately followed by the code I’d just received. Somehow that actually worked, although to this day I couldn’t tell you why. The holler of joy I gave frightened the poor man on the other end of the phone, but I told him I’d solved the issue, thanked him for his help, and hung up. After two days and several dumbass moves on my part, I finally had a usable MacBook Air. It’s been 2 1/2 years, on top of the seven or so years my mom had it, and that laptop is still going strong. It can’t do anything too crazy, but considering the most strenuous activity I do on that laptop is play Minecraft it’s worked wonderfully for me. Keep on trucking lil dude.

What is the evidence that they don’t have the required training? These DOGE employees aren’t just your random average coders. They’re some of the best and brightest analytical minds of their generation. Why should they not be able to understand the government’s computer software systems and properly analyze their data? In some ways, these employees have handled far more complex projects in the past… I think the post shown here is not really being fair or taking enough information into account before forming an opinion. I think OP *wants* to believe that anything having to do with Trump is evil, and will therefore ignore evidence to the contrary.
The DOGE Team
Here are some excerpts from an article that shares more about the team.
"Edward Coristine [19] ... is a college student at Northeastern University in Boston. He’s already interned at Musk’s Neuralink and is seen as an expert in his field. “
"Akash Bobba [21] … previously interned at Meta and Palantir, and his background in investment engineering and data analysis makes him a valuable asset in streamlining government operations.” (Akash is also Indian.)
"Ethan Shaotran [22] is the founder of Energize AI, an AI-driven startup, and a senior at Harvard University. With a background in computing and autonomous vehicles, he’s a perfect fit… ...having participated in the xAI hackathon.”
"Luke Farritor [23] is no stranger to high-pressure problem-solving. A former intern at SpaceX … Luke’s AI skills were on full display when he helped decipher ancient Vesuvius scrolls” Please allow me to add something here about that Vesuvius Challenge. Source Farritor figured out how to read these extremely fragile burnt scrolls without unrolling them. He solved a problem that experts has been puzzling over for years.
"Contestants had until the end of 2023 to decipher one of around 1,000 Herculaneum Papyri scrolls recovered from the library of the Villa dei Papyri, which was decimated by the same 79 CE eruption of Mount Vesuvius that froze the city of Pompeii in time. Discovered in the eighteenth century, the excavated scrolls have been sitting in museums and universities around Europe, unable to be touched “without them turning to ash,” Farritor said.”
Tumblr media
“Left: the scroll read by the winners. Right: result of an attempt to physically unroll a scroll. (Vesuvius Challenge)” "Farritor explained to me that his AI program took the image of the scroll and chopped it up into “tiny bits of 100 pixels by 100 pixels. And then the machine learning algorithm looks at each one and it asks itself, do I think there’s ink here? Or do I think there’s no ink here?” By compiling these tiles, the AI program can do what was impossible only a few years ago: read the scroll.”
Moving on… (Back to our prior article.)
5. "Gautier Cole Killian [24] … brings his expertise from the high-frequency trading world, where he worked at Jump Trading. … Gautier’s background in algorithms and financial markets positions him to make big changes in how government funds are managed."
6. "Gavin Kliger [25] ... the oldest of the group, has a unique role in DOGE, having made waves by sending a controversial email that shook up the USAID staff. A graduate of Berkeley, Gavin’s no stranger to big decisions and leadership roles. His willingness to leave a seven-figure salary to join Musk’s mission underscores his dedication to reforming government systems.”
My Point
As we can see, all of these young men are quite capable. I think that many posts on Tumblr, like the ones shown in the original post above, oversimplify and misconstrue the actual facts in favor of supporting a more shocking and upsetting narrative. Please take time to review some of the information related to the claims you’re seeing. Take a little time to decide whether you actually want to incorporate a claim into your worldview. Don’t blindly accept anything.
“But these boys are too young!”
-In 1777, when Alexander Hamilton was (at most) 22 years old, "he had captured the attention of the army’s commander-in-chief, General George Washington, who gave him a position on his staff.” (Source) -In 1797, when Gauss was only 20, his "doctoral thesis of 1797 gave a proof of the fundamental theorem of algebra.” (Source) -In 1773, when Mozart was just 17, he had already composed his very famous Symphony No. 25 in G minor, K. 183 (Youtube video link if you’d like to listen).
-Évariste Galois only made it to 20 y.o., but he had already made groundbreaking contributions to mathematics by the time he died in a pistol duel in 1832. "While still in his teens, he was able to determine a necessary and sufficient condition for a polynomial to be solvable by radicals, thereby solving a problem that had been open for 350 years. His work laid the foundations for Galois theory and group theory, two major branches of abstract algebra.” [Wikipedia] -Ada Lovelace (1815–1852) Wrote the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine, making her the world’s first computer programmer at the age of 25 (working with Charles Babbage’s Analytical Engine).
-By the age of 25, Alexander the Great (356–323 BCE) had already conquered most of the known world, including Persia and Egypt, creating one of the largest empires in history.
-By the time he was 25, Johannes Kepler (1571–1630) had developed his laws of planetary motion, which were foundational in understanding how planets orbit the sun.
Conclusion
To quote Akash Bobba at his UC Berkeley graduation in 2021: "We live in an age where simplicity reigns supreme, where 30-second TikToks and 280-character tweets come to define our identities,” he then said. “This increasing willingness to simplify even the most complex narratives into sensational tidbits, perpetuates misinformation and in the process divides the communities, families, and relationships we cherish. What’s the solution, you might ask? Seek discomfort.”
Tumblr media
It's a heist. Elon is the fraud. DOGE is the fraud. The coders destroying databases are the waste.
