Greater than a Medal...

The story of Vinesh Phogat is one of enduring resilience and an athlete's determination to overcome all the odds stacked against her. From being one of the faces of the brave protest against the sexual harassment faced by women wrestlers (including minors) at the hands of the then head of the Wrestling Federation of India and BJP MP, Brij Bhushan Charan Singh, to becoming an unceasing source of inspiration for innumerable people in this country, Vinesh Phogat has become a shining light in not just the sporting history of India but also among those fighting for a safe and better society.

The story is not unfamiliar to the world because the latest chapter of it unfolded at the Olympic Games which was recently held in Paris. The official version is very simple: Having fought through a draw that needed her to beat the defending Olympic Champion, the reigning European Champion, the reigning Pan American champion in each of her rounds, Vinesh had entered the final and was scheduled to face Sarah Hildebrandt of the USA before she was disqualified on the morning of the bout for being 100g above the permissible weight of 50 kg. Vinesh Phogat's disqualification meant that she would end up receiving no medals. However, it is the role of different sporting and political authorities of our country, and all the events that took place leading to the Olympic final that needs our examination as a concerned society.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA), as is the case with any other sports-body in India, has long been a rubber-stamp that is invariably controlled by the ruling dispensations. The role of this body in this whole affair is suspect. That the alacrity with which it announced the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the competition was not shown in making an appeal against the decision has not gone unnoticed. Its President, P.T. Usha, has been quick to absolve her organisation from all responsibility in the matter and has covertly and overtly placed the blame on the shoulders of the athlete. The Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, addressing the issue in the Parliament, stooped so low as to declaim about the money the government had spent on Vinesh Phogat's training. At this point, it should not be forgotten that it was this same ministry that had delayed in providing accreditation for Phogat's support staff including her coaches and physiotherapists. The snide and even belittling remarks following the disqualification and the barely concealed glee of many elected representatives of the ruling party point to the deep resentment that they had harboured towards Vinesh. However, the most noticeable was the silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi following each of Phogat's victorious bouts leading to the final. It was very uncharacteristic because he has always been quick to bask in the reflected glory of the achievements of our sportspersons. It is unsurprising that his social media post after the disqualification was equated to the shedding of crocodile tears by the discerning public.

Vinesh Phogat's achievement can only be understood in its true proportions if we take into account the reason for her being above the permissible weight by a mere 100 grams. This is also the reason why she has been a thorn in the flesh of the authorities in our country. Phogat is an athlete whose normal weight is 55-56 kg. She usually competes in the 53kg weight category. However, she had to forgo all rigorous training during the phase of protest where she and fellow wrestlers and Olympic medalists Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia protested for many days and nights on the streets of Delhi at Jantar Mantar demanding the arrest of Brij Bhushan. Not only was she unable to train, she also had to undergo surgery to correct a lingering medical issue. In the meanwhile, the qualifying spot in her preferred 53 kg category was already taken by another wrestler. Fearing that the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) would not allow her trials in the 53 kg category as retribution for her role in the protests, she appeared for trials in both the 53 kg and also the 50 kg. Subsequently, she qualified for the Olympics in the 50kg category. In a sport as gruelling as wrestling it is normal for athletes to gain and lose weight between matches. However, the very fact that Vinesh had to lose 5-6 kg just to compete in the Olympics, that too in a category that is not her preferred one speaks volumes about her determination and character. But, the very fact that she was forced to do all these is the result of the constant obstacles that were erected before her by the nefarious authorities, particularly the WFI which continues to be ruled by Brij Bhushan in all but name.

The story of Vinesh Phogat is compelling. She may have been disqualified for reasons beyond her control, and ones which are suspicious to say the least but she has, undoubtedly, won her greatest battle. She had famously proclaimed that she would happily sacrifice her career if it meant that countless other girls would get an opportunity for a safe working environment. She stuck steadfastly to the same goal going into this Olympics. She knew that it would be her last Olympics and that her career would be over but she wanted to fight for the women who would follow in her path. She was actutely aware that a victory at the Olympics, in front of the watching world would be the greatest slap in the face of a system that not only refuses to come to their aid but obstinately shields the criminals who wronged them. Needless to say, the authorities were also well aware of this. Yet, Vinesh's determination has inspired countless who celebrated each of her victories and wanted her to bring home the much coveted gold. The outrage and disappointment at her disqualification soon turned into a universal acknowledgement of the brave fight put up by this undaunted wrestler. If the rousing and heartwarming reception that she received on her return to India is any indication, Vinesh Phogat's and her fellow wrestlers fight has surely stirred the conscience of this country. This is important for a society that continues to stifle women's participation in not just sports, but all public activities. Recent events in our country are evidence that women remain unsafe in the present social atmosphere. It will be through unrelenting protests and collective activities like sports that we will achieve true democratization. Vinesh Phogat's role will forever be etched into the history of this struggle, for in a world where sportspersons and other famous personalities either openly endorse those in power or remain tight lipped to protect their own personal interests, she has fought the hard battle for a cause greater than an Olympic medal.

Russia reduces Su-75 'Checkmate' costs to win the sale of the fighter in India

Russia's effort to improve the fifth-generation Sukhoi Su-75 'Checkmate' single-engine combat aircraft program is facing some obstacles. The project cannot move forward with state funding alone. Last year, potential partnership discussions with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) were started. Now, the opportunity to become a partner of India has come to the table.

ROSTEC reported substantial cost reductions in the Su-75 project, attributing them to certain "technical changes". These changes were influenced by the "feedback from a potential buyer" that led to decreased costs. Without any official confirmation, some sources suggest that India could be this potential buyer, as the Hindustan Times said.

Retired Indian Marshal Anil Khosla, in a recent interaction with the media, raised some significant points. He mentions caution, requiring that a detailed cost-benefit analysis be made by New Delhi before making any commitments. He also adds that it is essential for India to strategically assess whether a mutual pact can extract more benefits for India. Any decision must produce favorable results for both parties involved.

Interestingly, India is currently working on its own advanced jet fighter. The ambitious fifth generation combat aircraft (FGFA) project is already underway and New Delhi is heavily invested in its success. From the perspective of Indian defense and industry, can a potential alliance with Russia, a complex geopolitical partner, compromise India's local project?

However, this did not dissuade Russia. They are committed to seeking help for the Su-75 Checkmate project. Although India remains on the list of potential partners, Denis Manturov, Minister of Industry and Trade, says that Moscow is also keeping an eye on other foreign customers. The update of the aircraft's layout, control and weapon systems based on customer feedback has led to certain modifications.

It is worth remembering that ROSTEC recently presented the Su-75 at the World Defense Show 2024 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as a way to attract the interest of potential partners or customers in the region. Russia has continuously expressed the importance of the Middle East in the development and trade of its armaments.

Sukhoi (United Aviation Corporation, UAC) is currently working on the first functional prototype of the Su-75 Checkmate. The plan is to be ready later this year, with tests scheduled from next year. They plan to offer the Su-75 Checkmate in three variants: a single-seat, two-seater and unmanned aircraft. All versions were patented in July 2023.

According to the UAC, improvements are being made to a new anti-radar coating paint scheme that aims to increase the aircraft's stealth performance. They made an announcement earlier this year, revealing that they had obtained a patent for the scheme. The vision, according to Russian UAC engineers, is to camouflage the aircraft so well that not only does it become difficult for radars to detect it, but also for the human eye, under cloudy weather conditions, has difficulty detecting it.

Sukhoi Aircraft Company, part of United Aircraft Corporation at ROSTEC, revealed the Light Tactical Fighter Checkmate at the international air show MAKS-2021, held in Zhukovsky, near Moscow. The foreign launch of this new model took place at the Dubai Airshow 2021, in the United Arab Emirates. Essentially a derivative of the fifth-generation Su-57 fighter, the new warplane is developed in an innovative way by the state-owned technology giant, Rostec.

You’ve been having trouble sleeping lately. It’s understandable, with enemy stand users after you all the time. You never know where or when you might be attacked, so it’s difficult to relax and fall asleep at night. When Polnareff had been attacked by Ebony Devil in his hotel room yesterday, it had made your little problem worse. If Dio’s minions can track down your hotel rooms before you’ve even set foot in them, then nowhere is truly safe. 

Maybe you’re paranoid, but you can’t help it. You find yourself laying awake at night, listening to every little noise and wondering if each one is a sign of an enemy attack. Every time you start to drift off, a door down the hall slams shut, or the air conditioner kicks on, and it pulls you back to wakefulness. 

After a few days of struggling to get even a few hours of sleep, you’re not feeling great. You start finding it hard to stay awake during the day, as your body tries to get the sleep it so badly needs whenever it can. You nod off on Polnareff’s shoulder on the train to Myanmar, you nearly fall asleep and drop your chai in Calcutta, you close your eyes in the bus on the way to Varanasi and startle awake every time it hits a bump in the road. It’s bad enough that your eyes keep slipping closed as you stand in the hotel lobby in New Delhi while Mr. Joestar pays for rooms for the night.

“Hey.” Jotaro nudges you, and you jump. “Come on, we’re going to the third floor.” 

You follow him into the elevator, realizing as the doors close that the others hadn’t come with you.

“Why-“

“They’re going to dinner. You’re going to bed early before you pass out in the middle of the street.” 

The elevator dings on arrival at your floor, and you follow him out of the elevator and down the hall even as you protest.

“I’m fine, really, I’ve just been having a little trouble sleeping.”

“I know.” He unlocks the door and tosses his bag onto one of the beds. “Which is why you’re sleeping now.” 

“It’s not going to work, I can’t-“ He cuts you off with a look you can’t quite read.

“Just trust me.” 

You do. So you go along with it for now, brushing your teeth and getting changed for bed. He does the same, taking his turn in the bathroom after yours. You get in bed and prepare for another long night of laying awake. 

Jotaro leaves the bathroom and turns the overhead lights off, leaving just the lamp on the bedside table to see by.

“You want this on?” He asks, and you shrug. You don’t think it makes any difference, but it can’t hurt. He leaves it on, but instead of getting into his own bed, he comes to yours.

“Scoot over.” 

“What?” 

“It’s a small bed, I won’t fit if you don’t move over some.” 

You do, just to see where this is going. He climbs into bed and props the pillow on his side up against the headboard before sitting back against it.

“Now sleep. I’ll stay awake for a while and keep watch.” He says, and you realize that somehow he’s picked up on exactly what’s been going on with you, and this is his solution. You think it might work, the closeness might make you feel safe enough to sleep properly. 

You press a sleepy kiss to his cheek and lay down, pulling the covers up and closing your eyes. It’s comforting to know everything isn’t on your shoulders. You can let him be in charge, you trust him.

You wake up in the morning feeling refreshed after sleeping through the whole night. You also wake up in Jotaro’s arms. Obviously he’d laid down at some point after you fell asleep, and now your back is pressed to his broad chest, one of his arms slung over you. 

You don’t think you could slip out without waking him, but why try? You close your eyes again and relax, comfortable and safe, for a little longer.

Julia is young. She feels young. But she’s also pretty certain the world isn’t quite as monochromatic as her new partner (mentor? Who knows) seems to think it to be.

Objects have value. But not just monetary—that’s not something Julia’s ever really thought much about, one way or the other. Objects have value because of the effort that went into making them, the emotions they instilled in those who saw them, the long march of history they’ve made over centuries or millennia. Encoded in each is a new language, a new story, a new perspective.

Beauty, after all, is in the eye of the beholder. In the thing that stands out, makes you gasp and open your mind to new worlds.

Take the Eye of Vishnu, the “Twice-Lost Jewel”. All the rage when she was at Cambridge—a treasure from India, one of a pair of sapphires bright enough to be diamonds, believed to grant good fortune to whichever power controlled them. Both were taken during the initial conquests leading to the foundation of the Sultanate of Delhi, passed in theory and legend from thief to thief with no blood spilled, for it was said the gems would collapse into dust if marked by blood. One was discovered all the way across the world in Casablanca but a scarce year ago, and then—inexplicably and ironically—stolen in the night. Another piece of history added to the gem…and another mystery stolen from the world.

And another reason—almost the deciding reason—for Julia to switch tracks.

A childish thought. But if she could help try to keep the past safe, in some small way, it might be a better use of her time than teaching students about what the world had lost.

And Poitiers! A nighttime deafeningly silent after London, the warm glow from windows and lamp-posts creating shadows of light against the darkness. Any number of histories, any number of places to protect for the sake of the people who lived in and love them. The city—the country—is alive with a sleepy, almost balmy energy. It’s like a whole new world for her.

It’s breathtaking.

And she wants to share that. Chase Devineaux is a legend at Interpol: always gets the thief, able to pull together disparate facts seemingly from nowhere to make the arrest, apparently indestructible given everything that’s supposed to have happened to him (once they become more comfortable working together she’d really like to ask him about the Zaragoza Incident). In a bit of a rough patch for the last few months, apparently, but the stories about this new super-thief are enough to pull anyone out of a funk.

Julia wants to help her new partner as best as she can. Laying some groundwork for where the Red Woman (her French isn’t perfect but she knows that much) might strike next. Aaaand if it just happens to combine her love of history with impressing the veteran through her ability to set a trap, well, that’s hardly a bad thing, is it?

But it seems to upset M. Devineaux more than reassure him of her capabilities.

(“Dull facts about boring things” isn’t the worst she’s heard about her passion. It still stings like she’s been slapped.)

And then, just when things seem to be heading right downhill on her very first real night on the job—

Just for a second—a second alone—she sees Carmen Sandiego, warm against the cold.

The days of the past few months blend together, consisting of physical beatings, verbal abuse, and eating moldy slop. The heat seeps through the metal bars of his cage, and he doesn’t have the strength to bat the mosquitos away anymore. Ram’s only respite are the nights. 

Then, he’s not A. Ramaraju, convicted criminal. He’s not being kept alive merely as a fucking trophy for the governor. He can be whoever he wants to be, do whatever he wants to do.

Ram has always had the ability to control what he dreams about. In his free time, once he had gotten accustomed to his officer job in Delhi, he had scoured the libraries to find out more. Lucid dreaming, he read. 

That night Ram made himself dream of Chinna, woke up with tears on his cheeks, and vowed to never do it again. 

Now, it’s his comfort. As soon as the field lights come on, the guards leave him alone to go home, and he knows he won’t be bothered until dawn. He closes his eyes, and falls.

Ram opens his eyes to see long green stalks. He sits up, surveying his surroundings. There are flowers that stretch out for miles as far as he can see, and they bring a sweet scent with them. The sky is painted pink and gold from a breathtaking sunset, and the cool dirt beneath his legs provides a respite from the heat. Over in the distance, kneeling near a row of red hibiscus, is a broad-shouldered figure. 

Ram slowly makes his way over to the man he loves, who turns and greets him with an ear-splitting smile, and Ram has no choice but to smile back. Bheem’s emotions have always been contagious to Ram, whether it was elation over trying a new snack from the street vendors, or the heartbroken grief Bheem had raged with during their fight. 

“Ram!” Bheem greets him. 

This Bheem, the one he’s created in this dreamscape, doesn’t hate him, or see him only as an older brother. This Bheem sees himself as an equal, as the other half of Ram’s heart, the way it should be. This Bheem knows all of Ram’s secrets, knows the monster he’s become and the child he started out as, and yet doesn’t hate him for it. 

This Bheem is the only one Ram has left. 

Ram kneels down next to Bheem, who points out the row of hibiscus flowers. “Look, bangaram, they’re so beautiful!” 

Ram just smiles at Bheem, knowing nothing he could dream up would be more beautiful than the man next to him. There is no betrayal in those eyes, no whip scars on his back, no lacerations on his wrists. 

Bheem is glowing from the sunset lighting, shoulders upright and relaxed. The saffron kurta he’s wearing makes him look like a god, and that’s actually close to the truth of it. He’s been Ram’s only solace these past few months, and Ram waits for the blissful nights where he can worship to his heart’s content. 

He reaches for Bheem’s hand, his heart jumping a little even though he knows none of this is real, when Bheem wraps his fingers around Ram’s and squeezes softly. 

“They sure are, bujji.” He replies. 

Bheem fusses for a few seconds, brushing his hands through the row they’re kneeling in front of. 

“Did you know that hibiscus flowers can reduce inflammation? Also a myriad of other ailments. If you ever get a heart attack, I’ll make you a paste that’ll save your life out of these.” 

Ram just listens to Bheem ramble on fondly. This wasn’t part of the dreamscape, Ram didn’t have that much knowledge on random flowers. He and Bheem –- Aktar at the time –- had had this conversation when Bheem had found Ram in the middle of reading a book detailing the circulatory system.

But in the 1960s, John Stewart Bell found that there aren’t any hidden variables at play – in fact, the coordination between entangled particles is a matter of chance when measuring the properties of one of the particles. Bell developed a mathematical inequality that says, “if there are hidden variables, the correlation between the results of a large number of measurements will never exceed a certain value”. However, quantum mechanics shows that it is possible to exceed this value, resulting in a greater correlation between the result than is possible through hidden variables. Exceeding this value proves that there is no unexplained “spooky action” and that the world is governed by quantum mechanics. But Clauser’s experiment had its limitations — the settings for measuring the entangled photons passing through the polarisation filters were fixed, meaning it was possible that the experimental setup itself may have been unable to detect some particles that were controlled by hidden variables. Alain Aspect, a French physicist at the Universite Paris-Saclay, sought to develop an experiment that removed this potential bias by changing the measurement settings only after the entangled photons left their source so that the setup itself would not impact the results. Anton Zeilinger, an Austrian physicist at the University of Vienna, was among the first to explore quantum systems that use more than two entangled particles, which now form the basis of quantum computation and allow entangled particles to be manipulated.
