Like -> http://www.facebook.com/TraumaAndDissociation for more Why Rape and Trauma Survivors Have Fragmented and Incomplete Memories In the midst of assault, the brain's fear circuitry takes over while other key parts are impaired or even effectively shut down. This is the brain reacting to a life-threatening situation just the way it is supposed to... It is not reasonable to expect a trauma survivor – whether a rape victim, a police officer or a soldier – to recall traumatic events the way they would recall their wedding day. They will remember some aspects of the experience in exquisitely painful detail. Indeed, they may spend decades trying to forget them. They will remember other aspects not at all, or only in jumbled and confused fragments. Such is the nature of terrifying experiences, and it is a nature that we cannot ignore. - James Hopper & David Lisak, TIME, 2014 @timeinc * Full article on TIME's website may trigger. * #rape #rapeculture #survivors #ptsdsymptoms #memory #sexualassault #abusesurvivors #abuseawareness #ptsd #ptsdsymptoms #dissociativeamnesia #dissociation #trauma #endrapeculture #quote https://www.facebook.com/TraumaAndDissociation/photos/a.741946675906761.1073741902.357814604319972/1179074942193930/?type=3

Like http://www.facebook.com/TraumaAndDissociation for more Dissociation leaves us disconnected from our memories, our identities and our emotions. It breaks the trauma into digestible components, so that different aspects of the trauma get stored in different compartments in our brain. What happens as a result is that the information from the trauma becomes disorganized and we are not able to integrate these pieces into a coherent narrative and process trauma fully until, hopefully, with the help of a validating, trauma-informed counselor who guides us to the appropriate therapies best suited to our needs, we confront the trauma and triggers in a safe place. ― Shahida Arabi #dissociation #trauma #shahidaarabi #healingjourney #healing #ptsd #cptsd #complexptsd #cptsdrecovery #dissociativedisorder #dissociationrecovery #healingtrauma @selfcarewarrior https://www.facebook.com/TraumaAndDissociation/photos/a.357820054319427.1073741828.357814604319972/1098425846925507/?type=3

Like http://www.facebook.com/TraumaAndDissociation for more Gaslighting - It is not okay for someone you like to treat you poorly and then pretend it didn’t happen, making you question your own grasp on reality. This dynamic is called gaslighting. It’s a common tactic of abusers to shift the focus of the blame from their bad behavior onto the person they are victimizing.. You may start to internalize the idea that there is something wrong with you and that you did something to provoke the situation as you’re increasingly beaten down and confused. - Shannon Weber #gaslighting #gaslight #psychologicalabuse #emotionalabuse #crazymaking #abusiverelationship #abuse #abusive #questionyourreality #questionyourself #amicrazy #mentalhealth #abuserecovery #mentalillness #abuseawareness #domesticviolence #intimatepartnerviolence #ipv #abusivebehavior #denyingreality #quote #shannonweber https://www.facebook.com/TraumaAndDissociation/photos/a.357820054319427.1073741828.357814604319972/1088659931235432/?type=3

Like -> http://www.facebook.com/TraumaAndDissociation for more Hardly anyone mentions that healing from abuse can involve some extremely painful realisations - often about how badly you've been hurt, but sometimes about yourself or your pattern of relating to others. Painful realisations about yourself normally come later in therapy, when you are better able to cope with them. These are self-realizations, and a therapist should keep their unconditional positive regard for you during this time. The example below is a particularly painful one, please don't assume it automatically applies to you or anyone else just because they were raised by a mother with NPD. Many people have some kind of painful realization about themselves, and it helps them move forward in time. ******************************** Painful Realizations During Healing "There came a time in my life when I had to admit to myself that I have some very clear narcissistic tendencies. Ironically, it occurred during the writing of my book The Emotionally Abused Woman. As I listed the symptoms of narcissism, I was amazed to find that I recognized myself in the description of the disorder. It should have been no surprise to me because I come from a long line of narcissists. My mother and several of her brothers suffered from the disorder, as did her mother. For some reason, though, I imagined that I’d escaped our family curse. I should have known that it’s not that easy to do." - Beverly Engel, The Jekyll and Hyde Syndrome #narcissistic #narcissism #npd #narcissisticpersonalitydisorder #healingjourney #therapy #abusiverelationship #abusive #emotionalpain #painfulrealization #healing #recovery #personalitydisorder #dysfunctionalrelationships #beverlyengel #personalitydisorderrecovery #healing #survivors https://www.facebook.com/TraumaAndDissociation/photos/a.357820054319427.1073741828.357814604319972/1075167142584711/?type=3
