In the grand theater of existence, consider two metaphors - the Staircase and the Room.
The Staircase represents our human experience of reality. Each step is a moment in time, and we climb this staircase one step at a time, moving ever upward. We can look back at the steps we've climbed, remember them, learn from them, but we can never descend back down. Forward is the only direction we can go. This linear journey is our way of sorting through the data of existence. Each step is an event, a memory, a piece of data that we process and integrate into our understanding of the world.
Meanwhile, the Room represents a different, higher-dimensional plane of existence. Within this Room, there are no steps, no enforced sequence of events. All points in space and time exist simultaneously, accessible in any order. This Room offers a holistic view of reality, where all the data - all events, all moments - can be perceived at once. Entities in this Room can interact with the data in a non-linear fashion, experiencing events not in a sequence, but in an intricate web of interconnected moments.
These two metaphors - the Staircase and the Room - provide contrasting ways of perceiving and interacting with the data of existence. While we climb the Staircase, moving linearly through time, we may aspire to one day perceive the full scope of the Room, to experience the non-linear, interconnected web of reality in its entirety. As we ascend each step, we inch closer to understanding the grand tapestry of existence that unfolds within the Room.

Recalling the spectacular Urwerk UR-111C, which displays the hours and minutes in a linear driver’s-style dial at the front of the watch, with jumping hours, linear and digital minutes. Optical magnified seconds are shown on top of the case, just behind the horizontal roller which replaces a traditional crown. This roller can be used to wind the UR-111C, and to set the time if the side case lever is put into the open position. This is a limited edition of 25 pieces from the brand’s Special Projects collection. . 📷 @urwerkgeneve • • #urwerk #ur111c #indywatch #specialprojects #lineartime #independentwatchmaking #finewatchmaking #hautehorlogerie #relogioserelogios https://www.instagram.com/p/CbDUBPNu6oM/?utm_medium=tumblr

i really overthink the playlists i make and am very particular about mood and order and everything because im just oghfgjjf insane. like for my gas&sip cas playlist i was kind of trying to go for like cas experiencing humanity for the first time and an intrinsic part of that being just. obviously not used to it so everythings new and exciting and confusing and frustrating but its also about. randomly remembering your circumstance and being FILLED with excruciating and sudden despair. but because of the nature of life/capitalism/lineartime. you have to keep moving. but its always there, waiting to hit you again when you least expect it. and cas would learn that intimately during that time of his life
#if you ever listen to my playlists and one song is drastically off putting cause it doesnt fit the general vibe of the rest of the songs.#it was on purpose i promise <3

Time Flies
It’s astonishing how fast linear time flies. It feels as though the year has just begun and yet today is the 1st of July – the middle of the year already. Makes me wonder how liberating it would be to be able to experience non-linear time like the implied time in the movie Arrival. The ability to be in the past, present and future all at once, and to just be.
According to my very limited knowledge of linear time, and all things spiritual relating to the universe, we humans on Earth are living the 3rd dimension and experience linear time. This means that we have memories of the past, live in the present and have no idea what awaits us in the future. Should we ever manage to grow and evolve enough to make it into the 5th dimension it is my understanding that linear time will no longer apply. I then imagine life would be something like the movie Arrival with lots of gentle stringed instrumental uplifting music and vague wafting around whilst exuding love, understanding and no judging (uproarious laughter has to meet this statement as even TRYING to apply this image to the majority of the human race is hilarious!)
Anyway, it is still nice to dream…

Migration
My sister tells me thrush, and sleep debt, change the perception of time after birth. We talk until the two year old needs to poop.
Garrison Keillor tells me it is the birthday of Ted Hughes, the man who spent only seven years with Sylvia.
Sage Francis tells me the Taoism is overrated, that the ultimate offering is the grinding of time on this human alter.
I travel 47.1 miles to pass 510 minutes. At 5:01 I will turn back around, my migration at high speed. Time sandwiched between hunks of the space. Each pinpoint is singular and I will never find myself back here.
Even if the busted guardrail, and the purple paint on the highway near Brighton, and the highway junkyards will look nearly the same tomorrow.

Design Corner: "UK Report: Notions of identity will be transformed in the next decade" & 19 more news
Design Corner /////////////////////////////////////////// UK Report: Notions of identity will be transformed in the next decade Posted: 09 Feb 2013 07:44 AM PST http://feedproxy.google.com/&;r/DesignCorner_feed/&;3/GQXebMYEorA/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email Hyper-connectivity – where people are constantly connected to social networks and streams of information – will have a transforming effect on how we see ourselves and others in the next decade, according to a new report published by the UK Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser Sir John Beddington. The Foresight study Changing Identities in the UK – the Next Ten Years looks at a range of areas affected by identity including social inclusion and mobility, education and skills, crime and mental health. It shows that traditional ideas of identity will become less meaningful as boundaries between people’s public and private identities disappear, with wide ramifications for policy-makers. Reading the (long) executive summary, it all seems rather optimistic to me, as the grinding impact of a slow-growth economy in the UK as well as the increasing “under-the-rader” control systems of corporations and governments through the unleashing of algorithms on big data sets, don’t seem to be valued enough in this report. Key findings (summary) Rather than having a single identity, people have several overlapping identities, which shift in emphasis in different life stages and environments. These are changing in three important ways: Hyper-connectivity: Sixty per cent of internet users in the UK are now members of a social network site, increasing from only 17% in 2007. The UK is now a virtual environment as well as a real place, and increasingly UK citizens are globally networked individuals. Events which occur elsewhere in the world can have a real and immediate impact in the UK. People have become accustomed to switching seamlessly between the internet and the physical world, and use social media to conduct their lives in a way which dissolves the divide between online and offline identities. The internet has not produced a new kind of identity. Rather, it has been instrumental in raising awareness that identities are more multiple, culturally contingent and contextual than had previously been understood. Increasing social plurality: As the large UK post-war cohort reach old-age, the number of over-75 year olds will increase by over a million, from 5.1 million in 2012 to 6.6 million in 2022, a rise of more than 20%. The Report identifies a shift in attitudes, with the emergence of new transitional life stages being defined by attitudes and roles, rather than age. Traditional life stages, for example between adolescence and adulthood, or middle-age and old-age, are being delayed or blurred together. Blurring of public and private identities: People are now more willing to place personal information into public domains, such as on the internet, and attitudes towards privacy are changing, especially among younger people. These changes are blurring the boundaries between social and work identities. The widespread use of mobile technology could, in time, allow social media to be linked with spatial tracking and even facial recognition technologies. This would allow people to draw on personal information about a stranger in a public place, changing the nature of what it means to be anonymous in public spaces. The Report goes on to question what identity means today. It finds that: Identities are controlled both by individuals and by others: People can choose to present certain aspects of their identities, or to disclose particular personal information. Identities can also be imposed by others. Even if a person does not create their own online accounts, their families and friends may discuss them or post photographs online. People have many overlapping identities: Understanding which of a person’s identities are most relevant in a given situation depends on the context. Identities are, therefore, culturally contingent and highly contextual, but can also be strongly linked to behaviours. People express their identities in different ways: One of the most significant observations of the impact of online identities is the way that some people can feel that they have achieved their ‘true’ identity for first time online. For example, some people may socialise more successfully and express themselves more freely online. Identities have value: People’s identities have personal, psychological, social, and commercial value. The growth in the collection and use of personal data can have benefits for individuals, organisations and government, by offering greater insights through data analysis, and the development of more targeted and more effective services. Identities can unify people and can be regarded as a valuable resource for promoting positive social interaction. However, this growth in the amount of available data also has the potential for criminal exploitation or misuse. Trust is fundamental to achieving positive relationships between people and commercial organisations, and between citizens and the state, but surveys show that people are less willing to trust in authority than in the past. Finally, the Report provides some recommendations for policy makers, particularly in six key areas: Crime prevention and criminal justice: The growing quantity of personal and financial data online, as facial recognition technology, ‘big data’ and social media together begin to connect information about individuals, means that there will be more opportunities for criminal exploitation and cybercrime. However, there are also opportunities for enhanced crime prevention, intelligence gathering, and crime detection. The foundation of English law is a liberal society where social identity is, as far as possible, a personally defined and freely chosen individual possession, and so the legal system will need to continue to ensure that people’s online and offline identities are protected. Health, environment and wellbeing: The implications of changing identities for the built environment, transport, infrastructure, and mitigating the effects of climate change will need to be considered by policy makers. The development and application of biomedical technologies, such as drugs to improve memory and cognition, and developments in reproductive technologies, could have the potential to transform the way that people relate to themselves, each other, and their environment. However, there are complex ethical and practical implications for government in regulating and responding to these technologies. Skills, employment and education: A critical issue for the future will be to ensure that individuals have the knowledge, understanding, and technological literacy to enable them to take control of their own online identities, and to be aware of their online presence and how it could be used by others. Radicalisation and extremism: The trends towards greater social plurality, declining trust in authority, and increasing take-up of new technologies may all pose challenges for policy makers seeking to manage radicalisation and extremism. Social mobility: Perceptions of unfairness in access to opportunities, rather than actual inequality, may in turn reinforce certain kinds of social identities and increase the potential for collective action. However, as access to the internet and hyper-connectivity increase, information and education may become more freely available and shared, enhancing life opportunities for many individuals. Social integration: Greater social plurality, demographic trends, and the gradual reduction in importance of some traditional aspects of identity, suggest that communities in the UK are likely to become less cohesive over the next 10 years. However, hyper-connectivity can also create or strengthen new group identities. Policy makers will need to consider indirect as well as direct implications of policy for communities and people’s sense of belonging. There are opportunities for policy to support social integration and acknowledge new forms of community as they develop. Description from Dirk Denison Architects This accessible house is designed on one level to provide a barrier-free environment and to capitalize on the potential for an internalized landscape. The plan is based upon an irregular grid, which informs all elements of its composition. Each programmatic function is contained within an individual building to respond to its specific needs. This enables each space to form a distinct relationship with its own courtyard or garden. . The ceiling plane is fractured and folded along a diagonal pattern, exploring the interplay of light in unique ways. These spatial volumes are bound together by an enclosing perimeter wall, which creates a single form out of a village of buildings and landscapes. The irregular pattern of openings in this simple wall hints at the home’s underlying geometry and expresses the various functions contained within. . . Images: Images courtesy of The Approach, London Press Release: The Approach is pleased to present Death Disco, an exhibition of new works by Dave Muller. Death Disco expands upon several familiar and more recent threads of the artist’s musically obsessed and multivalent art practice, namely death and celebration. Muller addresses feelings of loss and excess, reveling in a sort of joyful morbidity. Through depictions of personal yet emblematic objects, from unoccupied drum sets and stacks of CDs by famous musicians (recently deceased) to his own family photographs, Muller commemorates subjects who are conspicuous in their absence. Though social at his core, Muller avoids direct portrayal of people, choosing instead to direct our attention to the objects and ephemera left in their wake. Tracing elements of humanity through the unique stamp we each leave on the material world, he constructs an intricate multi-faceted portrait of both individuals and society as whole. The show is comprised of eight paintings and a mixed media music catalogue. The works She’s Not There and Where I’m at Is… (#5, blue), marry the basic concepts of ‘music’ and ‘absence’, ideas that are further intertwined throughout the show. She’s Not There is a portrait formed through an indication of what is missing or extracted from it, in this case the image of Muller’s wife, and Where I’m At Is.. (#5, blue) is a document made in October 2006 of Muller’s continuously expanding music archive; a snapshot of a dead moment in time. Three large scale framed works from the new Empty Drum Kit series appear in the exhibition, each depicting a drum kit once played by a now deceased musician or ‘dead’ band (now permanently disbanded). Focusing on the narrative quality of the now inert instrument, Muller creates indirect portraits of drummers Karen Carpenter, John Bonham and Keith Moon. We envision these musicians playing these drums, meaning the works can be understood not only as still lifes but as portrayals of now still lives. Double diptych, This American’s Top Forty (2012), chronologically arranges the painted spines of a selection of CDs into a vertical timeline that charts musicians who’ve died within the last year. Incorporating a pop-cultural reference to the American weekly music charts radio show and National Public Radio’s This American Life, this accumulation of objects also offers a way for us to recount the passing of time or tell a story through the physical signifiers of cultural, in this case musical, production. The familiar motif of the disco ball, recurrent in Muller’s work, appears twice in Death Disco. There is an obvious musical association with these objects, but Muller is also drawn to them as a compositional device, again employed in the pursuit of inadvertent portraiture. The fragmentation of our view of the subject is extreme, like a wrongly pieced together puzzle, and the main indication of their personal nature is found in the title. Like the Empty Drum Kits, these paintings activate our imagination: movement is implied rather than directly depicted- the spinning of the ball and the rotating reflections of the environment and ultimately the mental assembling together of seemingly disparate symbols into a logical visual order. I decorated one in my workspace/dining room last April for a party and liked it so much that I left it “as is”. I’m planning to change it up soon so I thought that before I do, I’d share this idea that is both great for parties or for long term. Okay so first, you need (obviously) a drum pendant. I bought mine from Raumformplan, it was made by a German designer called Frau Maier (you can see this pendant also in my new German decorating workbook, Holly Beckers Wunderbar Wohnideen, coming out in March). I selected the largest size available since my space allowed for it. I wanted something with a nice silhouette but also with a bit of bling so I selected Big Lulu Gold – a white drum pendant with a slight size difference (it’s wider at the bottom than at the top) and a gorgeous gold interior. You can find them here – my friend Janin sells them in her online shop and she is happy to ship one to you. :) After the pendant arrived, I decided to give it a more personal touch before installing it so I added a hot pink textile cord from House Doctor. I don’t think they carry pink anymore but you can always write to them to check or buy one from Rie Elise Larsen or, if you are in Hannover, ask my friend Daniela at Sommerfugl if she can get one for you since she sells Rie Elise stuff in her pretty shop. After you’ve installed your pendant and added a pretty textile cord, it’s time to decorate it for a party! I went through my ribbon stash to see what I already had and selected colors and patterns that I liked. Then I stood on a chair and held them up, accounting for about 3 inches extra that I’d need for each to tie them to the frame of the shade. I cut the ribbons into different lengths and simply tied them to the frame. NOTE: Please make sure you tie them tightly so they do not “slide” towards the lightbulb and of course, common sense says to also not tie them near the bulb at all – make sure they do not touch it or even come close – go for at least 4-5″ away. Best to tie them closer to the shade than to the bulb! Also, make sure they are not too long – you don’t want your candlelight dinner turning into a house fire! For a final decorative touch, I tied on a leaf banner that my friend, London-based stylist and author Sania Pell made and gave to me last year. It is a very special gift so I wanted it to be in a spot where I’d see it often because it gives me such a happy feeling. (Thank you Sania!). So, there you have it – a super easy DIY that you can do in minutes if you already have a drum pendant – if not, I bet now you are considering to buy one, aren’t you? I actually love this light because I can hang things from it and since it goes with so many different room styles and color palettes – a wonderful piece is a versatile one! I hope you enjoy my little DIY. See you on Monday! (photos: holly becker for decor8) Content © decor8. For personal, non-commercial use only (public syndication is not permitted). Posted: 09 Feb 2013 05:01 AM PST http://feedproxy.google.com/&;r/DesignCorner_feed/&;3/7JydC7T2vjU/42660457387?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email In the past year, the Northern portion of Mali slipped into chaos, leaving it without military or law. Islamist militants with a bad habit of kidnapping Westerners took control of the cities, and even the most dogged reporters beat a hasty retreat to the capital. Western media empires constructed around the need to report, instead turned to the internet sources, cellphone photos, and cryptic utterances on Facebook walls. Timbuktu was again the fabled city of Caillié, a closed mystery that not even the combined forces of CNN, BBC, RFI, and the mighty Al-Jazeera could penetrate. It’s not surprising then that the most ambitious sources of Northern Mali “news” has invoked the authority of newsroom reporting. During the past months, “Tamositte n’Azawad” (“the Kitten of Azawad” –facebook) has been issuing broadcasts on the situation in the North, with a penchant for satire and comedy. The creation of a collective of young Tuareg women living abroad in Sweden, Tamositte has been one of the most consistent media voices. Utilizing an iPhone/Android App known as “Talking Tom Cat”, the tool has been transformed into a new media mouthpiece, addressing very specific particulars of the conflict that are glossed over by international media: alliances between MNLA and Ansar Dine, critiques of hypocrisy of the MUJAO factions, and ousting of corrupt politicians. I spoke to one of the creators of Tamositte. Her goal, she said, was to raise awareness amongst the Tuareg in the North. By connecting with youth in these cloistered towns such as Kidal, she could comment on these topics of discussion concerning the Tuareg community. Tamositte videos have undoubtedly found their way from Facebook and onto cellphones, the messages relayed throughout the scattered populations of the besieged Northern towns with a comic authority that resonates. As the international community advances to chase out foreign extremists in the North, it will be greeted by the Tuareg, but the international media may not be so welcome. A new adversary has taken its place. Every time i say now, i use it to point at something already, just, passed (now == #) i know the ambiguity of this very specific N/now. now was constantly/now is constantly; right there/just when. i use the word so frequently; possibly more than once an hour (it is almost boring - ) Imagine a culture that doesnt know now. this culture is not on Now. a reason for a culture not to use now, is for it to simply have no sense of now. maybe it lives at another Now: Then or When... it might be a culture without a. there is no in-between. this culture simply does not use this sense of horizon. But if there is no, or at least not the one i sense at Now, how does this culture navigate? do they have a permanent sense of meunières disease? do they live in a state of non-navigation and constant confusion or impending nausea? or is it just another state of being - like a mucky yoghurt (why do i think of something as boring as mucky yoghurt - ) If there is no now, there is no event horizon. there is no planet to live on, in different, rotating times …what does ambiguity mean on a planet that has no now? I suppose that living outside of N/now is like living outside of time i can imagine only a superorganism living outside of time. but that structure would probably not be. it would be a structure of some kind of other manifold, alternate
