Wear Natural Fibers

Many people may not think that what they wear is in any way important in terms of fiber content. But in reality, it can make a massive difference in how your body feels, as well as the impact said garment has on the environment as a whole. 

Polyester or polyester-blend clothing is very common. As are other synthetic materials such as Nylon, Elastic, Spandex, Acrylic, etc. These are used due to the fact that they are very cheap, and can make a product able to be mass-produced easily. 

However, synthetic fibers in clothing almost never age well. First of all, they are generally cheaply made, with bad sewing techniques, and often with thin fabric. When you wash these clothes, microplastics, or small pieces of plastic, come off of the clothes and end up in the oceans. These small bits of plastic are often eaten by fish, and bioaccumulate until it can be found in our food supply. 

Another issue with synthetic fabrics is the fact that they do not breathe. As a result, you are likely to sweat and lot and often when wearing them. 

All of this can be avoided by switching to mainly natural-fiber clothing, such as hemp, cotton, and linen. There are also animal-based fibers, such as wool, cashmere, mohair, and silk, which are better options than synthetic clothing, but may cause allergies for some people, and may be unethical if you are vegetarian or vegan. 

There are ways of getting animal-based fiber clothing more ethically. For instance, buying them secondhand, or buying from a company like Wool And The Gang are great ways to do that.  Regardless of what you choose, choosing natural fibers will help you to feel more comfortable, will help your clothing last longer, and can even biodegrade if you busy it with compost.
