"Boot Device Not Found" installing Linux Mint 22

I am installing Linux Mint 22 Wilma on an HP EliteBook 8470p, Intel Core i5-3320M @ 2.60GH x 2, 8GB RAM. After booting LM from a USB drive & running the install program, I got the error "Boot Device Not Found" when attempting to boot from the local hard drive.

In the BIOS settings, under Boot Mode, I have these 3 options:

Legacy

UEFI Hybrid (With CSM)

UEFI Native (Without CSM)

The Legacy setting was active & did not work, but either of the UEFI settings did allow LM to boot off the hard drive.

I previously had Linux Mint 20.3 Una running on this machine, & it required the Legacy setting, so I don't know what changed here.

I want to make art but I lost access to my 3D background software and I cant figure out how to get Wine onto the got dang PC, seemingly just wont download from the source when I punch in the commands...blugh.... Maybe I'll try again later, look for a new source of backdrops if I cant, idk. I still really like using Linux but this has been eating at the back of my mind for a while now.

Как вы знаете, недавно я сильно топил за превосходства линукса перед закрытым мастдайным окном -

К сожалению, вынужден сообщить, что сегодня, 21.01.2025, я, полностью отформатировал свой диск с linux mint. Вероятно я сделал это слишком быстро и необдуманно, но я обосную своё действие.

Последний наверное месяц я заiбався дуалбутить винду: сперва желание поиграть в фортнайт (прикольная игруха если играть раз в N-ое время), потом надумалось мне начать делать видос (какая нахуй разница от спойлеров если меня никто не смотрит а если будут смотреть то не сейчас?), если игрушку про которую я снимаю видос я без никаких проблем запустил на линуксе через банальнейшее голое вино, то с самим монтажом и созданием превью как вы знаете из видоса не задалось, не запускается софт. И я так подумал: я компьютер использую по-большей части для создания творчества, иногда для игр и сёрфинга и часть этих задач невозможна без мастдая то может пока что отложить идею линукса? На самом деле очень жалко что на двух стульях удобно не посидишь, пока пострадаю, потерплю, понадеюсь что когда нибудь я смогу опять вернуться на линукс. С ноутбука линукс я не снёс, потому что на нём я не делаю чего либо с платным софтом.

Немного про опыт что был не сказан в видео:

Когда ты перемещаешь файлы с телефона на комп, то как оконщики знают, часто приходиться переподключать устр-во потому что шинда (10, 11)пишет "устройство занято, идите нахуй уважаемый", я был сильно удивлён что такого не было на линуксе.

Также понравилось что у моего дистрибутива есть что-то типа библиотеки с драйверами на разные принтеры, т.е. обычно не надо даже качать всякие .exe файлы хуй знает откуда (принтер долбаёб почему то до сих пор не печатает цвета).

Обновления только по желанию, как же это ахуенно. Ближайший пример: выключил я значит комп через завершение работы, так мало того, что винда сама начала обновление, так после этого у меня перестал открываться вегас и мне надо было переустанавливать vc_redist, я блять и не просил обновляться, на линуксе я мало того что мог в списочке выбрать обновление только того, что мне нужно, так я ещё мог полностью перепрыгнуть на другую версию дистрибутива парой команд (в моём случае с 21 на 22, но я где то читал что там приколы с кернелькой есть).

Про графическое и говорить не стоит: дохуя дистро, компизы, эмеральды, прилипание окон, пока на винде сильнее теней и пары анимация я ну нихуя не видел.

Обратная совместимость. С винды я могу смотреть только её файловую систему, на линуксе я могу по любому взаимодействовать наверное со всеми файловыми системами, ещё угарнуло что через diskmgmt нельзя EFI раздел удалить, пфффффффф. Я не знаю в чём была сложность записать diskpart;disk list;select disk #;clean в хгуй.

Steam. К сожалению, дуалбутить игры не получается, тем более если ты юзаешь протон.

Производительность. Без комментариев. С учётом того что рабочая среда на линуксе в пару раз красивее, гибче и пиздатее, швиндовс умудряется жрать в пару раз больше ресурсов. Шло бы оно нахуй.

Размер ОС. Тоже ебаный абсурд сука, винда хавает у меня не менее 150 гб и не даёт нормально сжать том (пиздит что не будет работать если сжать, но если сжать через линукс то работает и похуй), мой дистро не помню сколько хавал, но с учётом всех прог под 80 и при сжатии давал сжатие почти до отказного, я как то когда ноут делил межд�� ультра урезанной виндой и кали на, 40 гб жил, 120 гб диск прост, тогда верил винде что сжимать дальше нельзя.

Звук. У меня pulseaudio стоял, конечно да, тихонько шипит, но на моём опыте и опыте пары знакомых разница в звуке между шиндой и пульсой колосальная, шинда звучит как то плоско. Были траблы что звук пропадал и никак не фиксился настройками, но переустановка а именно одна команда и секунд 15 всё фиксило, так с большинством проблем кста работает скорее всего.

Ещё скажу что через анализатор дисков в минте так удобно чекать занятое пространство дисков, видно что ест много памяти, ну и сжатие ахуенное у минта, все расширения архивов и максимальное сжатие.

Про обхода: как я знаю они ставятся, но я лох и у меня не вышло, поэтому ладно в этом может есть превосходство винды - в простоте.

Моё мнение: линукс - реальна ахуеная тема, жалко только что не для всех, но только учитывайте, что одно делает мегакорпорация которая зарабатывает миллиарды (думаю даже больше) и за конкуренцию готова нахуй убивать, и полностью открытые и бесплатные ОС которые люди делают обычно за спасибо или для каких-то организаций под заказ.

Почему линукс минт? Во 1 мяту люблю пиздец, во 2 удобна для лоха как я, всякие нужные приколы по дефолту стоят и если не брать в учёт все данные, то на только установленную систему легко присесть, да и livecd в установщике делает мастхэв для диагностики всего, я пробовал лубунту на слабый комп и разница в потреблении минимальная (у меня так почему то), так что она для меня приятнее всего.

Ребята, не забывайте что весь линукс держится на работе за спасибо и каждый умеющий может помочь с развитием, всё может быть и в ваших руках тоже.

Wilma again

I have ongoing issues with the Linux Mint installation on the laptop I use for software development and blogging.

You may recall I tried upgrading to version 22 (code name: Wilma), encountered a graphics regression, and had to revert the upgrade using TimeShift. Since then, my Linux experience hasn't been quite right. While troubleshooting an issue, I uninstalled Python; this broke APT, causing routine software updates to fail.

Yesterday I created a new partition on the HDD and attempted a clean install of Wilma there. After several tries, I suspect that my largest USB thumb drive (NXT brand, purchased in January 2024) suffers from data corruption.

Believe it or not, my 2nd-largest thumb drive is too small to hold the 2.9 GByte ISO image, so this morning I'm off to buy a new thumb drive.

Here are two Linux distributions running in a virtual machine on Distrosea. They are Linux Mint 22 Cinnamon and Debian 12 MATE.

These images show some of the themes which you can select in each distro. Linux Mint uses two themes, known as 'Mint-Y (Arc)' and 'Mint-X (Greybird)'.

Mint-X is a redesign of the Graphical Toolkit 2 (GTK2) version seen in older versions of Mint made to work with the newer GTK3 and 4 versions. All themes are available in a range of colours and include light and dark variants.

In Debian 12 MATE, there are a range of retro themes including 'Green Menta' which is the default.

This is Debian's background featuring the 1999 Debian red swirl logo, which also features in Pixar's Toy Story, rotated around on the chin of Buzz Lightyear!

The name for this version of Debian is Bookworm, all releases since 1996 feature the names of various Toy Story characters.

I have selected a theme called 'TraditionalOK' which is a GTK3 theme based on a classic GTK2 version called 'Clearlooks' which was built from a similar theme used in the old free version of Red Hat Linux.

Most Linux distros use either GTK3, Qt4 or OpenBox as a theme toolkit.

The original GTK was developed in 1997. It was inspired by the success of the KDE project.

Using GTK3 or GTK4 has many advantages over GTK2 such as the ability to support modern features such as HiDpi as GTK3 uses vector graphics (SVG files) instead of PNG files to display all the windows on screen.

So, after a LOOOOOONG time not painting anything, while I was configuring my dualboot of highly customized windows 11 and mildly customized linux mint 22, and also finding which system handles my graphics tablet better (linux mint handled it better IMO) I finally drew a picture of my new imbalance protogen (but not fully protogen) OC in krita :3c

So, here it is, yes, it looks like a logo design, but hey! I haven't beed drawing for quite a while afterall, and I needed to test my skills, and also, found some artistic filters in krita I haven't been using ever, which helped me make the character's face a bit more digital (although I have some way to go with that one)

This character has a whole lore about them, and I say them, because the actual being that possesed this being is not something with sex or gender, it just choses a body for it, and goes like that

The body it took in this case is a body of a dead fox woman, so it just took her body from her grave, shifted everyone's memory about her, or even erased, then fixed her body, added her a vysor (because vysor = cool), and now lives it's own life. Also these things, that can posses dead bodies and live a life like that are able to shift reality and immune when anything else tries to shift reality thag they are in, and also these beings can regenerate from thin air, even if the body they are in is completely erased from reality. And BTW, these beings are bound to the body they took, so they can't change the body, and they should take care of it, as destroying the body to inexistance one too many times can lead them to roam without bodies for centuries, until they die from draining (also, I have no picture of them made for now, but I will come up with their appearance too)

I swear to god I genuinely think Windows 11 should be reclassified as malware and banned internationally.

I have an extremely low-level economy laptop. I'm aware it's falling apart. My GPU is pretty bad, I only have 8 GB of RAM, last winter fucked up the fan, and the CPU is regularly hitting 92C now.

Unfortunately, that means that I get to experience shitty Windows 11 updates the hardest.

Over the past few weeks, multiple Windows updates have made my laptop increasingly worse. I used to be able to run Firefox, Steam, Discord, a Steam game, and even open Minecraft or GIMP and maybe have files open. I could watch Twitch streams or YouTube videos in the background of everything.

Then, suddenly, my computer starts freezing. Firefox is suddenly taking up 800 MB to 1.5 GB of RAM. For reference, I can only use 7.78 GB of my 8 GB RAM, and Windows 11 natively uses 4.5 to 5 GB of that at all times.

That means I actually have ~2.78 GB of RAM. This rendered me unable to watch Twitch streams or YouTube videos in the background while I have a game open.

Firefox updates. Windows updates twice. Suddenly it runs a bit smoother, and everything is using about 200 MB less RAM.

Then, suddenly, I can't have Firefox open at all in the background. It causes everything to freeze. I think it's the CPU temperature, of course, that would be causing issues.

Now, today, 22 May 2024, without any Windows updates, I suddenly cannot have even so much as Steam, Discord, and Team Fortress 2 open at the same time.

It uses 90-100% of my RAM at all times.

Windows 11 is malware. It is behaving as though it's a crypto miner or as though it's got an insidious AI creeping through it scraping data from my files.

On the off chance some fucker at Microsoft sees this, move to Windows 12 and remove all your bloatware. Don't think I haven't seen that thread on Microsoft Answers where a fuckton of people call out Windows 11 for being significantly worse than Windows 10.

To those of you who are itching to say Just buy a new laptop/buy a computer!, feel free to donate me several thousand dollars. I am in extreme poverty, I am currently a NEET, my phone is not currently able to text or call (meaning I can't get a job right now), and I cannot afford it.

To those of you who are itching to say Just use Linux instead!, the vast majority of people I talk to automatically assume I'm unfamiliar with Linux. Everybody knows what the fuck Linux is.

I miss using Linux Mint KDE, but again, I'm in extreme poverty, and I have a history of bricking computers trying to build them or install a new OS. This is my only laptop and I can't afford to replace it.

having an odd issue where it seems my computer (Linux Mint 22 OS) restarts during usage of some things due to memory usage, though thats just my best guess, despite me not having that option enabled. Notably I can't use Heroforge in my browser or play Minecraft for more than a few minutes or worse seconds without it restarting. Does, anyone know what could be wrong? Does anyone following me use Linux? Searching online is, daunting, and most people have been unhelpful/mean
