As the Cygnus S.S. Laurel Clark spends its first days berthed to the ISS, the successor to the Antares 230+ launch vehicle that launched it is taking shape in the facilities of Northrop Grumman (NG) and Firefly Aerospace.  The Antares 330/Medium Launch Vehicle (MLV), scheduled for its first flight in mid-2025, is being developed to conduct ISS cargo flights from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport at Wallops Island, Virginia. Its development started after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 crippled the existing Antares supply chain.  Antares 230+ and its predecessors used Russian engines and a Ukrainian-built first stage. The Russian engines are unavailable after Western nations, including the United States, applied sanctions, while the Ukrainian factory responsible for the first stage has been attacked by Russian forces. The Antares 330, based on a brand new first stage with seven Firefly Miranda engines using kerosene and liquid oxygen, is designed to use the existing launch and processing facilities that supported the S.S. Laurel Clark and most other NG Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract flights. Like earlier versions of Antares, the 330 will fly from Launch Pad 0A at Wallops. The facilities at Wallops that supported the original Antares launches are being modified to support the Antares 330 and MLV rockets. The pad is being upgraded to accommodate the wider first stage, the transporter erector is being reinforced to handle heavier loads, and the horizontal integration facility is being lengthened to accommodate the longer launch vehicles. (Credit: Mack Crawford for NSF) The Antares 330 first stage is the linchpin of NG and Firefly’s future launch strategy, as it will also be used by the more capable MLV. The first stage’s Miranda engines are each capable of around 1,000 kilonewtons of thrust. Seven of these engines would generate just under 7,200 kilonewtons of thrust in a vacuum, which would be nearly double the thrust of the Antares 230+ first stage at 3,800 kilonewtons. This stage will be made out of carbon composite materials, like Rocket Lab’s Electron and Firefly’s Alpha rocket. Carbon composite assemblies aim to make the stage as lightweight as possible. The Miranda engine is currently in the development and testing phase. “Stubby” combustion chamber test articles have been built for initial testing of the engine, while the first full-size Miranda test article is being readied as well. Miranda engines will be mass-produced at Firefly Aerospace’s manufacturing and test facility in Briggs, Texas. The Antares 330 first stage, measuring 31 meters high and 4.3 meters in diameter, will also incorporate NG’s MACH avionics, which has been used on prior Antares vehicles. Like the Antares 230+, the Antares 330 will use the Castor 30XL solid rocket motor for its upper stage as well as the same payload fairing. The Castor 30XL solid propellant second stage of the Antares rocket that will take the NG-13 Cygnus to orbit. (Credit: Jacques van Oene for NSF) Antares 330 has a projected payload capacity of up to 10,500 kilograms to low-Earth orbit, as opposed to the Antares 230+ capacity of up to 8,120 kilograms to low-Earth orbit. This will enable heavier cargo loads to be sent up to ISS as part of the company’s CRS-2 contract. The MLV is a follow-on vehicle that will use the Antares 330 first stage along with a new liquid-fueled upper stage sporting a vacuum-optimized Miranda engine. Like other vacuum-optimized rocket engines, the upper stage’s Miranda engine will feature a much larger nozzle than the first stage engines will use. This enables the engine to function more efficiently at higher altitudes – the only region the engine will be firing in. The first Miranda “stubby” combustion chamber test article. (Credit: Firefly Aerospace) Like the first stage, the second stage will also feature carbon composite construction. Both stages will use graphite/epoxy tanks with a common dome, as well as the aforementioned NG MACH avionics. The second stage will be the same diameter as the first stage, while the carbon composite fairing will have a diameter of 5.2 meters along with pneumatic separation fittings and actuators. MLV specifications and rendering. (Credit: Firefly Aerospace) The MLV is also set to be offered with an optional third stage based on one Firefly Lightning-based engine. Lightning has been successfully used on the Firefly Alpha rocket, while work that had gone into the Firefly Beta concept will now be used with MLV. NG had offered three optional third stage choices for earlier Antares vehicles, but those vehicles never saw other customers besides NASA for anything more than small CubeSats. The MLV’s current listed payload capacity is up to 16,000 kilograms to a 200-kilometer circular low-Earth orbit inclined 38 degrees to the Equator. After the MLV was first announced, its capability to geosynchronous transfer orbit was listed as 2,750 kilograms, though any updated figures are not currently public.  Aerial view of Wallops Flight Facility. NG envisages MLV being offered for National Security Space Launch (NSSL) Phase 3 Lane 1 missions, which do not require the use of all of the Space Force’s launch facilities. These missions also have less stringent requirements on the types of orbits the vehicle can reach. The MLV’s fairing meets NSSL Category B requirements.  The MLV is also planned to be offered for NASA Launch Services Program missions and Venture-class Acquisition of Dedicated and Rideshare (VADR) flights, which are higher-risk and lost-cost NASA satellite missions. Private satellite constellations, commercial space stations in low-Earth orbit, and US Department of Defense Rocket Systems Launch Program flights are listed as possible MLV clients as well. The MLV is joining an increasingly crowded field of competitors in the medium launch services space. Rocket Lab’s Neutron, which is partially reusable, is specified as having similar capabilities to the MLV – not to mention launching from just a half-kilometer away from Pad 0A – while the ULA Vulcan, Arianespace Ariane 6, India’s LVM3, and Japan’s H3 will also be competing for launch business. The first time you had been with the Mandalorian, it was a quick affair; straddling him in an alley behind the cantina, praying no one caught you. It was several days before you returned to the bar, but Axe was there all the same. Sitting at his usual table, but this time flanked by his companions. They were deeply engrossed in conversation, but Axe’s eyes flicked to you when you entered, and followed you on your path to the counter.
Tonight’s bartender was a quarren, stoic and silent, who took your order with very few words. If there was such a thing as mental exhaustion, you had it, and you hoped that the spotchka would ease it, if even for an hour. The first glass went down a little too easily, and another was in your hands within seconds. The distinctive sound of moving armor came from the table of Mandalorians behind you, signaling that they were ready to depart. For a moment, your heart sank, just a fraction, knowing he was leaving the cantina- but you pushed it aside and downed your drink.
“I thought maybe you weren’t going to come back,” you start at the sound of Axe’s voice behind you. He chuckles and moves to take a seat on the stool next to you, carefully placing his helmet on the counter. “Ready to tell me your name yet?” You consider him for a moment, then tell him. Axe repeats it back, his face breaking into a smile that makes your heart jump, “I like it”.
He removes his gloves and you notice a peppering of bruises on his knuckles, and what looks to be a blaster burn peeking from under his gauntlet.
“Did you have anything to do with the Imp freighter that was hijacked last week?” you keep your voice even, but playful. The Mandalorian chuckles again and leans in closer to you, “Maybe, “ he reaches down into his belt pouch and removes an Imperial officer’s pin, singed with blaster fire, and places it on the counter in front of him.
“If you’re hoping to woo me with proof of your conquests-” he grins and cuts you off, ‘I’m not, I just thought maybe it would get me a free drink,” he nods toward the Quarren, who is eyeing the pin, his face tendrils twitching. You scoff and signal to the bartender that you’re ready for another glass; instead of Spotchka, he sets down a bottle of Port in a Storm. You eye the bottle, then turn your gaze to the Quarren, silently asking for clarification. “On the house,” he grunts, before producing two glasses and placing them on the counter in front of you.
Axe slides a glass toward himself and pours some of the dark red wine into it, pausing to take in its scent before raising the glass to his lips. Reluctantly, you pour yourself a glass- you have heard stories of the wine’s potency, and even a rumour that in a pinch, it could be used as a solvent. Axe watches intently as you take the first swallow, and throws his head back in a laugh when you wrinkle your nose in disgust. “It’s awful! It tastes like fire paste!” You set the glass down carefully, fearing that the volatile liquid inside might explode if it was moved too harshly. “How can you drink it?” you cry, as Axe lifts the glass to his lips again, “I’m a Mandalorian- we’re a different breed.”
“Understatement of the century, I’m sure,” you mutter. The Mandalorian cocks his head and smiles before downing the rest of his wine. “So what happened to your two friends?” you ask, “Off to take down another Imp ship?” Axe nods almost imperceptibly, “Something like that.” Emboldened by the liquor in your system, you press him further, “Without you? That’s too bad.” Axe raises an eyebrow and smirks, seeming to have figured out your game, “Somebody has to stay behind and get the freighter ready for our return to Mandalore,” he pauses to fill his glass again, “besides, I don’t think I’m done blowing off steam just yet.”
You laugh, maybe the first genuine laugh you’ve had in weeks, and turn to face him, “I want to see it.” Axe blinks, and you swear you notice a twinge of surprise, “You- what?” You nod toward the pin, “The freighter. I want to see it.” The Mandalorian considers you for a moment, then jerks his head toward your unfinished wine, “Finish that-” he pauses to down his own glass, “and maybe we’ll talk.”

The strength of Port in a Storm was not exaggerated in the stories you had heard. After one glass, your head was spinning, and the mental exhaustion of the day had all but melted away. How Axe was still standing after two glasses was lost on you- Mandalorians were indeed a different breed entirely.
The night air is cold as usual, and the soft smell of saltwater hangs like fog on the small port city. You shiver, cursing yourself for forgetting your jacket on the table at home. Your Mandalorian companion has donned his helmet, and others on the street give the two of you a wide berth. It suddenly occurs to you that you are following a man who you barely know to a secondary location- maker, what would your mother say? "Looks like people are pretty afraid of you," you quip, looking up at his visor. "They should be," he retorts, "Mandalorians were once the most feared warriors in the galaxy." You consider it for a moment, "I'm not scared of you." A chuckle comes through his vocoder and he trains his visor on you, "You're the first."
You shiver again, and to your surprise, Axe places an arm around your shoulder and pulls you close as you walk. You feel your face grow warm, but you melt into the embrace anyway. A small hum of satisfaction crackles through the Mandalorian's vocoder, and his grip tightens just a little- enough to keep you against him.
The freighter is landed just outside the city, its enormous metal frame an impressive sight against the plain scenery of Trask. Axe produces a small fob from his belt and presses a button; with a pneumatic hiss, the cargo ramp of the freighter lowers, and the two of you enter.
The cargo area is stacked with crates, which you can only assume contain weapons. "What were they doing with this ship?" You ask, gently running your fingers over a blaster burn on the wall. "Trawling the planet. Taking what they want and moving the weapons and supplies. We've been hitting them, taking their cargo." You smile at this- any thorn in the Empire's side was a good thing; you remember all too clearly what it was like before it fell.
The two of you move from the cargo area, through the galley, and to the crew quarters. At its peak, the ship must have been staffed by at least 50 men. On a nearby table is a Storm Trooper helmet, clearly taken as a trophy, spattered with blood and blackened by blaster fire.
Off the main quarters are the captain's quarters- an impressive suite with a large bed and an enormous window. You imagine the view during spaceflight must be breathtaking. Axe watches you move about, examining the different trinkets the captain had collected- a kyber crystal, some kind of skull, and several small gemstones. You hear a hiss behind you as the Mandalorian removes his helmet and discards it on a nearby chair. You turn to face him, and his dark eyes bore into yours, hungry and full of want. You watch as he releases the buckles on his shoulders, and removes his chest plate, pauldrons, and gauntlets, then moves onto the thigh plating. The armor is haphazardly flung to the floor.
Beneath the armor, Axe is well built, the bulge of his muscles visible through his undershirt. He moves closer, quickly closing the distance between you, and cups your face with one rough hand. His kiss this time is less desperate than before- almost loving, as if he's savoring the feeling. His hand moves from your face and slips under the hem of your shirt, raising it and exposing your chest. You break away from the kiss to pull the shirt over your head and toss it to the floor.
Axe pauses for a moment and stares at your body, pulling his bottom lip in with his teeth. He pulls his own shirt over his head and you let out a small gasp at the sight of the scars that litter his chest. What kind of life had the Mandalorian led? The thought is quickly pushed from your mind as his mouth returns to yours, and one of his hands moves to gently explore your breasts. A whine escapes you as his calloused fingers find your nipples and gently brush over them. He grins against your mouth and pulls away, "take these off," he tugs at the hem of your pants and you happily oblige, toeing off your boots and letting your pants fall to the floor.
He leads you by the hand to the bed and gives you a gentle push to lie you down on your back. He peppers kisses down your jawline, continuing to your chest, where he lazily takes a nipple into his mouth. You let out a cry of pleasure and feel him smile against your skin before he continues his trail of kisses down your stomach. He pauses and adjusts himself so he can spread your legs, then positions them over his shoulders. You shudder at the feeling of his warm breath on your inner thigh.
"Look at you, mesh'la," he murmurs, his dark eyes meeting yours, "already so wet." He dips his mouth to your folds and you let out a strangled gasp at the feeling of his tongue on your clit. He works it in slow circles for a moment, savoring the sounds of your small moans, before he pushes a finger inside of you. You buck your hips into him as your hands grasp for purchase on the sheets beneath you. He pushes in a second finger as his mouth continues to lick and suck at your clit.
You can feel yourself nearing your breaking point, the white hot sensation of your impending climax like a pot set to boil over. "Axe, I'm-" you can't even finish the words. You feel yourself clench around his fingers, and you cry out as your orgasm crashes over you. You lie there, breathless, as Axe moves back up your body to kiss you, the taste of your own arousal still on his lips.
As he presses against you, you feel the swollen bulge of his cock through the fabric. "Are you ready?" he murmurs, his hands moving to free himself from his pants. You nod and he moves to position himself between your legs, lifting them up over his hips.
Slowly, torturously, he enters you, filling you until he is buried deep inside. He begins to thrust, slower than before, his mouth on yours, swallowing your every whimper and moan. Axe breaks his mouth from yours, and moves it to your ear. "I had hoped you would come back to the bar," he whispers, his stubble rough against your skin. "I wanted to know what you'd look like spread out beneath me."
"And do you like what you see?" You pant, breathless, as he bucks his hips into you. He chuckles and takes your earlobe into his mouth, "I love it."
He pushes himself up to rest on his knees, and pulls you up onto his lap, your legs wrapping around his waist. The new angle brings him even deeper into you, and you bury your face in the crook of his neck, only able to whimper his name as he fucks you. His grip on your hips is tight as he drives you down on his length, his movements growing more erratic as he chases his own climax. You hear him whisper your name and he moans as he drives one final thrust into you, spilling himself inside of your walls.
He holds you there for a moment, his breath hot on your neck, both of you panting and sticky with sweat. He kisses the top of your head and whispers "Gar cuyir kandosii'la." You don't recognize the words, but you hum contentedly anyway as he traces his fingers gently up and down your back, sending goosebumps to your flesh.
When you finally disentangle yourselves, you begin to make your way to your discarded clothes. You lace your pants and reach for your boots when you feel an arm wrap around your waist. You turn to find the Mandalorian staring at you, his expression unreadable. "Stay with me tonight, cyar'ika." His voice is soft, and the cocky air has disappeared entirely. You're taken aback by the offer, certain that you would be making your way back to your place tonight. "Stay...here with you?" You ask, trying to keep your voice even, "aren't you worried about your friends coming back?"
Axe smiles and closes the distance between you, raising his hand to brush a strand of hair from your face. "They won't be back for some time. And plus, I don't want you to have to walk back in the dark."
He guides you gently back to the bed, where he lies down on his back and motions for for you to rest your head on his chest. You wiggle in close and melt into him as he wraps his arm around your shoulder. Axe kisses the top of your head and sighs contentedly. You feel your eyes grow heavy as the weight of sleep starts to fall on you, and the gentle, even breathing of the Mandalorian beside you helps to lull you until your eyes close.
"Good night, Axe." You whisper, unsure if he is still awake. You feel his arm tighten ever so slightly.
"Good night, cyar'ika."

What is Lighterage?
Lighterage is also termed as lightering is an operation primarily dealing with the transfer of wet and dry cargoes between ships of varying sizes. It is considered to be the cargo transfer operation on the coastal areas of the sea between the mother and the daughter vessel. The process is carried out within the port facility reducing the draught of vessels for entering the inland waterways.
Here are some lighterage procedures we need to focus on:
1. Cargo Transfer Equipment:
Understanding the type of cargo transfer from one vessel to the other, compatible cargo equipment is kept ready for the operation.  With the maximum loads tested and certified, cranes and derricks are placed in the working order. Wet cargo transfer pipes of the relevant size are used with the corresponding connector couplings of the appropriate length. The connector couplings are tested for the maximum liquid pressure limits.
The team involved in the operation must be aware of risks in transferring hazardous cargoes. These hazardous cargoes should be handled with the help of special equipment and protective gear.
2. Mooring / Unmooring:
The STS experts support the ship masters to supervise the mooring operation since mooring the vessels requires a certain level of competence. It requires an expert team to safely manage the berthing / unberthing process. Appropriately sized tyre fenders are deployed on the mother vessel or the lighter vessel. This will avoid structural damages involved in ship to ship contact. During the STS transfer process, the rubberized tyre fenders prevent the accumulation of static between the vessels. In addition, fenders ensure a safe distance between the two vessels once they are tied up.
Mooring lines should have better construction, material, and be strong enough to captivate the forces generated during operation enabling a safe cargo transfer operation.
3. Weather:
Decent weather conditions play a vital role for the successful accomplishment of all critical marine operations including lighterage service. Most of the times the cargo transfer operations are aborted indefinitely due to unsuitable weather conditions resulting in loss of time and money. The teams involved keep a constant check on the weather forecast and all the communication is recorded appropriately.
4. Person In Charge:
Generally, the operation expert or STS Superintendent or sometimes the ship captain carries the lighterage operation. The process aims to appoint the person in charge for calculating the risks involved and safely accomplishing the cargo transfer operations. The STS expert is usually an ex-mariner coordinating for supervision, co-ordination, and authorization of events involved during the operations.
5. Operational Checklists:
To successfully complete the critical operations the expert team follows all the guidelines and relevant operational checklists which are incorporated in the port management system. During the lighterage operation, it is vital to consider both the vessels have different operating procedures and should have a varied set of people handling the operation. Thus, all the personnel involved in the cargo transfer operations should be alert and unsatisfied to the common safety procedures on board.  
6. Communication:
Efficient cargo operations demand good and clear communication between the vessels. It is crucial to agree on the common mode of communication like via working marine VHF/ UHF frequencies, etc. Ensure the communication is clear, brief, concise, and well demonstrated for operations.

Among the research it will bring to station, science investigations and technology demonstrations aboard Dragon include: The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) will provide high-quality laser ranging observations of the Earth’s forests and topography required to advance the understanding of important carbon and water cycling processes, biodiversity, and habitat. GEDI will be mounted on the Japanese Experiment Module’s Exposed Facility and provide the first high-resolution observations of forest vertical structure at a global scale. These observations will quantify the aboveground carbon stored in vegetation and changes that result from vegetation disturbance and recovery, the potential for forests to sequester carbon in the future, and habitat structure and its influence on habitat quality and biodiversity.

OCEAN FREIGHT, LAYTIME AND DEMURRAGE – WHAT THE HECK ARE THEY? - Part II
This is a continuation from Part 1 :

1.  OPENER
In the maritime world, laytime and demurrage are a couple of the most contentious issues to resolve. How ever one may refer to the contract or charter party to support a claim, the counter-party may do the same to nullify or to reduce its value. This is because a claim for demurrage is based on a fair assessment which may be challenged if a different perspective (charterer’s) is applied, like what was the performance of the ship in regards to the loading and discharging of the cargo? Of course, there are several other underlying and tangential issues which may be related to the claim, like a port closure due to bad weather or unavailability of a pilot to help navigate the arrived ship to the loading or discharging terminal or berth, thus delaying the onset of cargo operations.
So, what exactly are laytime and demurrage?
2. DEFINITIONS
A. Laytime
The time, expressed in hours and minutes, a ship takes to load or to discharge a consignment of cargo. Stipulated laytime is the agreement between the parties which places a parameter, generally 72 hours (36 hours each way) for the ship to load and discharge a full cargo, although ever since its appearance several decades ago, purely oil trading companies (as opposed to integrated oil companies) are known to demand 96 hours from the shipowner. This practice seems to be the standard now.
Used laytime is that which the ship actually takes to load and discharge the cargo. It may exceed or not, the stipulated 72 or 96 hours, depending on a variety of circumstances. Where it exceeds, that over-time is customarily chargeable to the charterer. This penalty presupposes the shipowner has been adversely and also unnecessarily impacted in a financial sense through the delay to cargo operation. They must therefore be compensated for this.
B. Demurrage
The excess time (over and above 72 or 96 hours) is liquidated through a claim for compensation following the voyage. The premise is that demurrage is an extension of ocean freight and payment to the shipowner from the charterer is due.
C. Demurrage Rate
A demurrage rate, which is agreed to in the contract, is the daily charge or penalty against the charterer for the time taken to load and discharge a full cargo above and beyond 72 hours (or 96 for some). This rate takes into account the cost to the shipowner of operating the ship, including but not limited to the daily hire for the crew and the fuel for the ship’s propulsion. Additionally, the demurrage rate tracks the freight market. The same ship may show a higher or lower demurrage rate in the contract for a following voyage, depending on the prevailing freight market forces.
D. When does a claim for demurrage arise?
In practice, from the time the ship arrives in port and when the master/captain tenders a “notice of readiness” to the load/discharge terminal, (also known as an “arrived ship”), it becomes effectively, at the disposal and control of the charterer. The latter has a contractual duty to berth the ship and to complete the loading and discharging operation within the stipulated time of 72 hours (or 96 hours depending on the contract). As long as the charterer fulfils this lawful obligation, a demurrage claim does not arise. However, should the reverse occur, and following the completion of the voyage, the shipowner will raise a claim for compensation against the charterer. Supporting documentation, including a duly certified Statement of Facts or timesheet are attached. Demurrage is in general, calculated as the excess laytime used, that is the number of hours and minutes over and above 72 hours (or 96) multiply by the demurrage rate agreed. For example, excess laytime = 12 hours and 30 minutes, while the demurrage rate = usd 28,000/day. The claim thereon should amount to usd 14,583.33.
Upon receipt, the charterer will review the claim and assess its validity in part or whole, including factors like the performance of the ship’s equipment (pumps) during the discharging operation to ascertain they were in good order throughout. In essence, a claim is in many instances, never as straight forward as it appears. There are other factors which might have caused the delay to cargo operations which was beyond the control of the charterer, for which depending on the terms of the contract, they may not have to pay for, or perhaps they will share the burden with the shipowner on a 50/50 basis. This latter principle especially applies to acts of God, like bad weather which shuts down the port, thus preventing the charterer from fulfilling their contractual obligation, until such a time when the weather improves and the port is re-opened.
3. CONCLUSION
In closing, there are a few things to bear in mind about maritime affairs.
The respective obligations embodied within the charter contract are deemed as sacred. This is in full recognition that a voyage is an adventure. That is, it carries risk to the life of the crew and passengers arising from the seaborne passage, and also to the ship and cargo, which the shipowner and charterer have invested considerable sums or sacrifices toward. The principle of safe and expeditious voyage follows thereon from this. That is to say, the captain or what is also termed as the master, of the ship has a duty of care to the contracting parties (and to his crew and passengers). As such, the master should always adhere to lawful maritime regulations and industry-wide best practices. To digress, many such maritime laws came about post-incident. That is to say, a tragic mishap at sea happened, resulting in loss of life and or severe pollution to the marine environment. As an example, the sinking of the S.S. Titanic in 1912 when it collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic Ocean, led to the introduction of SOLAS or International Convention on the Safety of Life at Sea, in 1914. This omnibus regulation mandates, among other things, minimum standards toward the construction, equipment and operation of a ship. A painful lesson from the Titanic was the shortage of available lifeboats, which could have prevented many fatalities. That was one of the crucial lessons learnt and SOLAS addressed that.
Another example was the M.T. Exxon Valdez grounding and major oil spill in 1989 in the pristine waters of the Gulf of Alaska. It caused the U.S. Congress to enact the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA90), a set of stringent and also costly and punitive maritime regulations as a means to preventing further accidents of this nature or magnitude. This was soon followed by similar, although varying regulatory action in the E.U. and across the world. Australia too had a major maritime incident when the M.T. Kirki broke apart in heavy seas off the western coast in 1991. The outcome was the comprehensive “Ships of Shame” report in 1992, which gave urgent impetus to strengthening the safety regime surrounding the maritime industry in Australia.
The shipping business is a very important partnership between the owners of the ship and the cargo. Without this collaboration, ours would have been quite a different world – less economic development no doubt. For anyone contemplating a career in the industry, and if you are passionate about it, the rewards are there – personal enrichment and experience in arguably the most globalized industry. The hours are long, and the work can be frustrating at times, but overall, it is the folks in the business who make it all seem good and possible.
In the foregoing (parts 1 and 2), I endeavoured to explain quite superficially, just one important aspect of commercial tanker shipping. Ocean freight, laytime and demurrage however, are at the core of the business. It is about rewarding the shipowner for the risk which they undertake in operating the ship so that cargoes of petroleum and gas may be stowed safely on board and shipped around the world for our benefit. Every time we see a ship in the waters somewhere, it is always good to give thanks to this remarkable workhorse and to the officers and crew who operate it.

10 Major Ports in Romania
Ports play a vital role in a nation’s economic development by facilitating smooth trading operations. They also contribute to global economic prosperity through the maintenance of supply networks across many countries.
Romania is the twelfth largest country in Europe with a growing economy. It borders the black sea to the southeast and shares a maritime border with Turkey. It also has many inland ports situated on the Danube. The strategic location of Romania places the country as an important player in international maritime trade and commerce.
The Romanian Ports are managed by the Ports Authority of Romania, owned by the Government of the country. Let’s look at some major ports of Romania in this article.
1. Port of Constanta
Constanta is Romania’s most important port located on the western coast of the Black Sea. It is not only a crucial hub for trade but also a famous tourist spot. The port’s capacity is 90 million tons per annum with a 19-meter natural depth and has modern equipment.
Constanta deals with many types of cargo such as dry and liquid one, project and general cargo, and also passengers. Since 2016, the port has emerged as the principal Eastern waterway for agriculture-related business to and from Romania and other neighbouring countries.
Being a multipurpose trading port, Constanta has much scope for expansion. It also faces the challenge to accommodate huge ships and new cargo types. This requires further improvement in existing facilities and so the government is constantly working to build new connections with the Caspian region to draw new kinds of cargo.
2. Port of Midia
The Port of Midia resides on the Black Sea coastline and is around 13.5 nautical miles from Constanța. It functions as a satellite port of Constanta and was constructed to meet the requirements of industrial and petrochemical industries located nearby.
It deals with the transport of chemicals, oil products, fisheries, and ammonia. At this port, ship repairs and maintenance services are also provided.
The port has 14 berths including 11 operational berths, spanning 2.24 km. This port is mainly used for transporting crude oil to the Petromidia Refinery.
3. Port of Medgidia
The Medgidia port is one of the largest riverine ports in Romania. Situated on the Danube-Black Sea Canal, it is quite a busy port, well connected through roads and railways.
It deals with passenger ships, tankers, cranes, and general plus bulk cargo. It records 1.2 million tons of annual commercial traffic and 10.3 million tons of annual industrial traffic. These statistics clearly outline its importance for the Romanian economy.
It is located near Medgidia city and is well equipped with the latest operational equipment. It also offers medical, water, fuel, and banking facilities. The Constanza International Airport is just 31 km from the port.
4. Port of Bechet
Bechet port is situated on the left bank of the Danube and is accessible only through roads. It has two docks- one made of stone, measuring 600m, and the vertical one which is 70 meters long. At max, it can handle ships weighing around 2000 tons. It has flourishing annual freight traffic of about 50,000 tons every year.
It has three berths with the cereal berth being 100 meters, the berth for general goods being 200 meters, and the dana oil terminal which is 300 meters long.
The port is equipped with huge storage spaces, warehouses, platforms as big as 12,000 sqm, and an oil terminal. The headquarters of administration, border customs, and police are located near the port.
It provides services such as post-telecommunications and also hydrometric measurements and has a grain transhipment facility, a truck weighing scale, and also manoeuvre equipment.
5. Port of the New Galati Basin
The Galati port called BAZINUL NOU Port was built in the early 1900s and is the second-largest Romanian port. It is situated near Galati city and is an important revenue source for the city due to the presence of many multinational corporations near the port.
It is the most important port of the Danube and its key activities include shipbuilding and chartering for a variety of goods. The Galati Shipyard is owned by the Damen Group which is a Dutch enterprise.
The METAL TRADE Group took over and privatized the port in 1999. Since then, the port has witnessed tremendous growth in terms of an increase in the volume of trade and the development of modern infrastructural facilities.
It also specializes in port services such as loading and unloading and storage of import and export goods. Its goods traffic increased to around 1,100,000 tons in 2006. In this, Metallurgical products amounted to 900,000 tons, the share of bulk goods was 120,000 tons and general goods were around 15,000 tons. Timber was 51,000 cubic meters and containers numbered ar 225pieces.
The port covers an area of 334,464,470 square meters and is accessible through roadways, railways, and river routes.
6. Port Calarasi
The port of Calarasi is situated near the Borcea arm of the Danube. There is a minimum water depth of 2.8m in the basin. The port comprises three areas – the Industrial Port, which can be reached through an access canal, the Commercial Port, and the Steel Product Port.
The Calarasi port handles cargo which includes, grain, fertilizers, coke, raw materials, and steel products. It handles approximately 1,690,000 tons of cargo annually.
The industrial port specializes in metallurgical products. It has functional berths consisting of a vertical wharf measuring 400m for handling steel products. It has16tfx32 cranes and wide platforms. It has another platform that is 135 meters long for loading slag. The depth in the berths is around 4.25m.
The Commercial Port is quite close to the city. It has an inclined wharf berth which also has a grain silo and port platform. It also has bulk goods storage berths measuring 250 m, cranes, and a garage line as well.
The port also boasts of berths for passengers which are well equipped with a waiting room and also mooring pontoons for the safety and ease of passengers.
The commercial port platforms span 213,000 sqm with the warehouses covering around 3000 sqm. The Calarasi port has two operating springs with inclined docks, warehouses, and a trestle with a conveyor belt.
7. The Port of Braila
The Braila port is a riverine port on the Danube and is a crucial port of Romania dealing in trade and transportation of cereals. It is a part of the TEN-T network and comprises the following areas-
The first is the old region of ​​Braila port which has a non-operational area with a natural shoreline. Then there is a vertical wharf of around 1200 m and 171 km downstream are five berths of 400 m for passenger ships. There is also a 750 m long maritime berth with a sloping quay for general cargo. The berth’s minimum depth is 7.5 m.
The Docuri basin has a port front whereas the Braila free zone is divided into three sectors. Sector one is situated downstream of the Braila pore, the second sector is called the “Varsatura” area which is on the Braila outskirts and the third sector is located in the vicinity of the port.
Braila Port has enormous potential for growth if the river transport could be carried out largely by the industries in the area along with an increase in Braila’s capacity to handle more cargo. There is also a need to modernize the infrastructure in the Port of Barila.
8. Port of Giurgiu
The Giurgiu port is situated on the Danube river near the city of Giurgiu. It has a container terminal with a capacity of 30,000 TEU’s. It has four-port areas namely, the commercial area called “Ramadan” with an inclined wharf 1400m long and consists of waiting berths for goods, commercial berths along with berths for passengers and tourism. It has pontoon mooring, a river station, and customs administration offices.
Second is the oil port area- “Cioroiu” with a wharf measuring 710 m which has commercial operative berths and waiting berths. It has modern pontoons for fuel manoeuvring and a fuel depot as well. It also has tanks and huge storage containers.
The commercial area “Plant Basin” comprises the north side and the south side of the basin. It has cranes, storage platforms, and a natural shore. The “Veriga” pool area used by the Giurgiu Shipyard, is a hub for the construction and repair of ships. The Giurgiu Free Zone entails the “Cioroiu” port zone and the Chemical Plant area.
9. The port of Orsova
The Port of Orsova is located on the Danube near Romania’s Mehedinți County. The industry in the small town is centered on energy production and extraction of bentonite, chromium, and granite.
The port of Orsova provides shipbuilding services and has an annual operational capacity of 12,00,000 tons.
The Orșova shipyard was built in 1890 for the repair of sea vessels but after the 1990s, it recorded drastic growth. The major commercial activity of this port is Receipt and storage of goods, delivery of stored products, loading and unloading of grain. It also deals with trade-in loose cement, powdery material, and bulk goods.
The port offers commercial spaces, warehouses, and offices which are readily available for rent.
It has sophisticated equipment such as gantry cranes, loaders, trailers, and belt conveyors. It also has a river station, equipment repair workshops, a washing ramp, access roads, and huge platforms for storing goods.
The port has 5 railway berths, customs, border crossing control point, naval transport agency, and customs commissioner.
10. Port of Moldova Veche
The Port of Moldova Veche is a riverine port near the town of Moldova Nouă. It has 6 berths and its dock measures 560 meters. It also has two terminals, one for cargo and the other for passengers. This port handles the trade of wood products, sand, gravel, bricks, and fertilizers. It has cranes for commercial and passenger berths and also a wide port platform. The port is accessible only through the road. The offices of port authorities like the port administration are located nearby.
The port also offers services like border customs, post-telecommunications, and phytosanitary.
Ports are essential as they bridge the gap between the land and sea. They also provide easy movement of freight traffic and people from one place to another, aiding cross-cultural exchanges.
