#RomBkLove Day 18: Career Oriented • Pretty Face by Lucy Parker • Actually, the whole London Celebrity series offers a really insightful view of careers in the entertainment industry. I chose Pretty Face in particular bec Lily and Luc's jobs play v huge parts in the romance(also, bec it's my favorite in the series! hah). Their first meeting is pretty strange since both already have preconceived ideas of each other before the "official meetcute" but in line with today's prompt, they first meet at an audition for a new West End stage production. Luc is working as director looking to cast an important part and Lily is the auditioning TV star who's looking for opportunities to expand her stardom's reach. The story then unravels how difficult it is to remake a legendary theater to make his own (Luc) and to transform one's self - voice, public image, etc - to reach full potential as an entertainer (Lily). Their careers also become a source of conflict (he's practically her boss; and it eventually comes to a point where she's got to work with Luc's ex (OMG, THE DRAMA!)) leading to a sort of secret lovers type of thing, but only to the public eye, the chemistry between them is super obvious to everyone they work / hang-out with. • Special mentions to Mina V. They brought with them signed copies of the first two books in the London Celebrities series and I completed the set with my digital copy. The fourth book, The Austen Playbook comes out this month and I am super excited for it! @chachicsbooknook already read an ARC of it and she’s fallen in love with it! 💖 • What’s a book that’s coming out this month that you can’t wait to get your hands on? • *for the record, my shirt says “Pick For The Greater Good”, but leave it to @readbyher to read something else from it. "If she ever wanted to reclaim the pieces of that past Trix, there was only one option. She would have to push herself. One new challenge and one step at a time." • The third book in the London Celebrities series features characters we've already seen in Pretty Face - Lily's room mate and bestfriend, Trix and gorge MUA Leo. Now I know I said PF is already my favorite, but I really liked Making Up too. Again, Lucy Parker's enemies-to-lovers magic worked brilliantly with the premise of a ~broken MC and a meanie but softy LI. This time, she throws in second chance romance and agh, I gobbled (and sob-bled let's be honest 😭) it up! I remember a Twitter convo about jobs in romance novels and Lucy Parker tweeting how she liked showing her characters' jobs in her stories as close to reality as possible and this book really showed both of the protagonists' drive to make careers of what they're passionate about. • I especially loved Trix's transformation to reclaim herself and to repair the damages the actual villain in this story's (it's you Dan, you F-ing a-hole!). I also loved the part where they go "You were never meant to hear that." "And that makes it okay?" "No" bec it made the grovel so much more satisfying! Leo undergoes a certain transformation here too, but Trix's triumph is what moved me best. Oh and one quick highlight for me is Cat's antagonistic tendencies bec it mellows down towards the end, but it doesn't magically goes away and I loved it. I hate her, but I love that she's there. LOL • "This was meant to be just sex." She was grasping at the last tumbling pillars of stability around her, watching them crumble into dust and slip between her fingers. "You said it was just casual. At the festival." "Well, I fucking lied, didn't I?" She suddenly flushed." • Lily Lamprey and Luc Savage. Where do I even begin??? Argh. This is my favorite in the series (thus far) and I know a lot of people are saying the same thing, but IT'S. JUST. THE. BEST. First of all, they start off as real enemies. Luc is a huge douchebag (with a heart of gold, but that comes in later) and Lily was subjected to his misogynistic eye (and ear) before they even officially met. And one of the things I loved so much about this was that the eventual meetcute didn't magically make everything okay. They had to work on it, and it made so much sense! (this is Lucy Parker and it's amazing what she can do with words!) I'm only scratching the surface there, and SO MUCH MORE HAPPENS that made me laugh and cry and just pause reading for a second bec ~kilig! It's also got a little ~secret lovers thing going on in the middle, which sounds ridiculous in theory bec they're adults (but it's more bec they're hounded by paparazzi everywhere), but it's not so secret to everyone around them bec their chemistry is off the charts! • I liked this better than the first book bec I felt that the stakes were higher and each character's backstories, motivations, and development were more fleshed out. And that's saying something bec Act Like It was already so good and this one topped it. IDK what else to say without spoiling anything, and this has been a mess of a "review" but I loved it so much, you really need to read this, and the entire series, please! • "When you love someone, you work through things together.
