Just a fun idea
If Nova was a romanceable npc in mtas then what dialogues would she have ( like one for each relationship level (Acquaintance, Buddy, Good Friend, romance), you can skip levels or add more lines if you want )
Tumblr media
Introduction:
Hiya! I haven't seen you around yet, so I'm assuming you're new - I'm Nova, one of your fellow builders! Come find me if you need a buddy to go ruin diving with.
Birthday:
My birthday's on Summer 15. When I lived in Seesai, I spent every single birthday at the beach. I can't really do that anymore here, so my new thing is just sitting by the oasis.
Acquaintance:
If you ever need to get ahold of me, ask Kor or Daphne where I am, they'll probably know! Oh, wait, but...what if you don't know where they are...hmm. I'll get back to you on that!
Kor told me you're from Highwind! That's cool, I've always wanted to visit. You think I'd be...blown away?...Sorry, that was bad. Ignore that!
Uh oh! I forgot my pass to the salvage yard expires today...you think Rocky will let me extend it for, like, a discount...?
Buddy:
Moving to Sandrock gave me a bit of culture shock. I do miss Seesai a lot, but I really think I'm better off here than I was there.
There you are! Daphne stopped by earlier to give me a few melons from the Moisture Farm...care to share some with me?
I love collecting minerals and whatnot from the desert, but I am so intimidated by the Boxing Jacks there. Every time I see them coming from the corner of my eye, I can't help but yell!
Good Friend:
My brother lives in Walnut Groove. He's a real successful Builder there. To be honest, I don't care for building that much, but...it's a stable job, at least. Don't know if I'll live up to the expectations he's set, though.
I used to be the apprentice of a well-known Builder in Seesai. She was really kind to me, even when I made mistakes all day. I was so sad when my apprenticeship ended! In fact, she made me my bandana and pickhammer as a parting gift. I try to write to her every few weeks.
I have a really small collection of Old World stories and movies. It gets boring watching and reading the same things over and over again, though, so I hope I'll find more stuff in Sandrock to mix up the collection!
Tumblr media
Romance
Confession Accepted:
Oh? I can't believe it, you beat me to it! Of course I accept.
Confession Rejected:
I'm...really flattered, I promise, but...I'm so sorry, I just don't think we're at that level with each other...
General Lines:
I made you this bracelet the other day. You don't have to wear it, if it's not your style! Buuut...I do have a matching one, sooo...
I've wanted to visit Seesai for a while, but I was always too nervous to go through with it. I think if you're by my side, though, I'll be able to manage.
Hey! What are you doing today? You wanna go eat at the saloon? I'll pay, don't worry!
Honey?...mmm, no. Sweetie? Hmm...Oh! Sorry! Just trying out nicknames for you...baby?
When I first got here, I felt like I had something to prove. I don't even know who I was trying to prove something to! But now that you're here, I feel like the last of that pressure came off of my shoulders.
Tumblr media
Festivals
Day of the Bright Sun:
• I put in a few accessories I made over the last couple of weeks. I hope whichever person ends up with them likes them!
Showdown at High Noon:
Wow, the atmosphere is amazing! Everyone is so amped up for this. I didn't participate in anything like this back in Seesai, so I can't wait to see who comes out on top!
Day of Memories:
This festival has different ways of being celebrated in other cities, but they all have one thing in common - they're all so beautiful.
Tour de Rock:
I'm so bad at sandrunning. Maybe I'll just...watch and cheer everyone on!
Running of the Yakmel:
Can I tell you a little secret? I'm kind of scared of Yakmel! They're cute, but they're huge! I try to avoid the ones around the outskirts of town when I can.
Winter Solstice:
I've been looking forward to eating some skewers all day! What better way to kick off the start of a new year?

March! This was very close to being 3 hours, 31 minutes but then some cool new tracks released so they were added and we ended at 3:35.
Anyway, obvi the primary goal here was to include 'Brutus' by The Buttress as track fifteen. Ides, babyyyy. Really tried to work a lot of Ides of March and March as Spring in here. I felt very clever opening with De La Soul's 'The Magic Number' (it's three like the month).
I encountered some new and old faves this month, always stoked to find new bands and to discover new covers - Grace Slick covering 'Nature Boy,' do you KNOW how amped teen me would have been??!! Overall this might be the most "concept album" of monthly playlists I've done and I'm quite pleased with it! Also this cover is maybe my current favourite thing.

Different? Better?
The adventure with the 1990s high end tube amp goes on.
There is good, and there is bad. Clearing away the bad issue is it will cost money to keep this beastie running. The good is it has the seductive sound of the vacuum to tempt and to tease me. Such a tease.
Last night I played 4 albums. The result was interesting.
The first one was my original copy of "I Robot" Alan Parson's Project. It sounded really good. AP was a recording engineer of great talent and is responsible for Dark Side of the Moon among many others. If you are familiar with that you can appreciate that the mixes are complex and deep and leave much to be untangled. If you are a detail geek as I am it is required listening. Lots of fun.
Next up was a "special" I found in my densely packed hoard of LPs. It is on the Wilson Audiophile label titled Center Stage.
Tumblr media
It has an amazing back story and provenance. It was commissioned by Absolute Sound Magazine and the recording engineers, and mastering gurus are a who's who of the high end. Everything custom and tweaked. They even note the tape preservative used. Yes tape and pure analog full on. Should be great right?
I know TAS used it to evaluate equipment and crown the winners of that month's SOTA awards.
I may have mentioned that you can have great music recorded well or poorly. You can have great recordings of good or poor music. Bad recordings of bad music stay in the bin where they belong. Some things are doomed to be test records and this is one of those.
In the full golden ear style of reviewing I will note my equipment. The Phase Linear 8000 series 2 tangential tracking TT with an AT7V cartridge front end. Preamp is the ARC SP-14 with 50 pf load on the phono, and the Amp is the ARC Classic 60. Speakers are my own "invisible speakers" bass reflex in lovely birch plywood cabinets.
The music was movie and Broadway tunes played by horns and woodwinds with percussion. Basically a symphony orchestra without any strings. There was good space and I am a full on fan of how drums are portrayed. They are big deep and with amazing texture. Horns let you show off lots of audiophile type tricks. But the music was BORING. After two cuts I could not help but think if I hear another John Williams tune I will throw up. No FN imagination just quotes of everyone from Brahms to Stravinsky.
This is big loud music, and I was falling asleep droogs. I played both sides and yes the technical production is full on high end, but this goes back in the heap for a long time. Just not fun.
Since I was bored I decided to pull up "Year of the Cat" Mofi which I have talked about before. Wonderful recording of the most boring singer in history. Now this was interesting.
With the Franken-Amp this is broad and front row and deep with really really good clear sound. With the tuber it was almost muffled. Mr Stewart was pushed back a few yards and there was fog or smoke around him. ( not literally just an audible fuzziness thing ) I could still hear it clearly and all the parts were sharp and good. The guitar was very nice and metallic. The treble was really good. This is a Mofi after all. But the perspective of the mix was far different. I was in full on WTF mode. I bet it was mixed in a studio with all Solid State gear.
Very different, but not better.
OK one more then I have to shut it down. Emmylou Harris "Quarter moon...." I just got a Mofi used record from a cool shop a 5 hour drive away. There was some groove noise like dirt, they said they had ultrasonically cleaned it. Under the noise the recording was very nice. Actually a bit of discwasher brushing cleaned it up noticeably. I suppose the mix is simpler and cleaner so the sound was as I recall it before no big changes.
One thing and I will come back to it again. There is a background singer with a really cool tone to her voice. She is there, but not as easy to separate out as I recall. That may be the mix as Mofi does fiddle it's masters, or it may be the tuber. I have the original vanilla disk right in the milk crate there. I will check it.
[ Update: I did check it next day. The original disc was much clearer and the other singer was very easy to distinguish and understand. So did Mofi remix it and mess it up a bit? Interesting that the old copy sounded just as good as the mofi. Old master tape copy perhaps?]
In a related thing I ordered a set of the driver tubes. (EHX Russian). Far cheaper than a full set of 6550s and likely 30 years old. I want to pull the covers for a peak and will throw those in. It is a lot of bother to do so. I need some things to do in there aside from look. I will also check the bias of the output tubes. I will also scope some capacitors on the PC board that can go funny. There are 4 electrolytics there that are not power supply related and are known to be vulnerable. Just to risk my life you know. I gave up motorcycles decades ago.
The Amp does help warm the room and there was frost on the car this morning.
Cheers to all.

Falk & Klou - Swedish Library Grooves Vol 2 - from 2021, a celebration of 70s library music recorded with period equipment. Unlike most library LPs the tracks are full-length, i.e. 3-7 minutes. "UFO" is a total jam & was recently issued as a 12" single with a remix.
When we first started this project we weren't so sure where it would end up. All we knew were that we had a common love for 70s music, especially funk, jazz, soul, latin, easy listening, jazz funk, jazz rock, fusion… yes, it was a lot. Our main goal was to create music that would have a definitive 70s flavour, both in sound, performance and appearance, creating everything as authentic as possible. We used the real deal, such as 60s and 70s basses and guitars, Fender Rhodes electric piano, Clavinet D6, Minimoog model D, String machines, a horn section, three different drummers, all recorded with vintage effects, amps and microphones. After one year of recording and mixing we ended up with ten pretty different tracks, both in genre, sound and style. We are definetly not a group with one defined sound, rather producers and instrumentalists with the urge to make enjoyable, groovy and organic music, like all the music we love from the 70s. This is where the library music idea appeared. Carl Johan Fogelklou usually plays bass in Swedish band Mando Diao and teaches Yoga. He has also met the king of Sweden. Fredrik Segerfalk runs Analog Sweden, a synthesizer venture, and also owns a 1964 harpsichord. Carl Johan helped him carry it. It's a beast.  You can hear it on the track "Bittersweet". He also successfully crowdfunded the Blade Runner inspired project "Moments Lost" in 2014.

Unveiling the Fantastic Benefits of Plank Exercises for Those New to Fitness
Tumblr media
Let's dive into the age-old wisdom from India that suggests syncing up with the universe can get your body, mind, and soul grooving in perfect harmony. And guess what? The plank workout is like the universe's way of giving your muscles a secret high-five—it's simple, snappy, and does wonders for your whole body in just a hot minute!
Let's Break Down the Plank Party
I. Getting into the Plank Pose :
Picture this: You're belly-down, knees bent, feet joining the fun. Your body shapes up like a sleek arrow from head to toe. Engage those abs without breaking a sweat—let those tummy muscles do their happy dance.
II. Maintain a Plank Position :
Keep that back straight, abs on duty, and throw some love to your glutes and quads. Shoulders down, neck stretched—freeze like a statue for a cool minute. If you're a plank newbie, ease into it and amp up the seconds. Feeling bold? Switch to a forearm plank. Sure, your muscles will chat back, but hey, that's energy having a blast!
Unwrapping the Plank Perks
Powering Up Core Muscle Squads:
Meet the heroes:
Transverse Abdominis: Your lumbar spine's groove buddy during limb shenanigans.
Rectus Abdominis: The genius behind a flat stomach and kicks that pack a punch.
Oblique Muscles: The twisty pals bringing flair to your midsection.
Gluteal Muscles (Glutes): The dynamic duo pulling the strings on hip and thigh moves.
1. Strutting with a Healthy Posture
Imagine a posture so on point, it's practically a piece of art. No slouching, no hunching—just a balanced distribution making you strut, stand, and sit like a rockstar. Planks play architect, getting every muscle in on the action to craft a frame that screams confidence.
2. Harmony and Cooperation
Ever felt a bit wonky on a bike or wobbly on one foot? Say hi to core stability, the unsung hero. Planks school your abs to keep it real, resulting in muscles that bring swagger to your balance game.
3. Kicking Back Woes and Dodging Illness
Back pain and slouching—nobody's BFF, right? Planks ride in like knights in shining armor, straightening up the back, tossing out back pain, and waving buh-bye to muscle issues like osteoarthritis.
4. Core Strength VIP Pass
We're not just about looking good; we're about heaving, ho-ing, and being everyday heroes. Regular planking, mixed with a buffet of exercises, crafts a core that's primed for whatever life throws your way.
5. Flexibility Vibes
Dreaming of nailing headstands, handstands, or any kind of stand? Enter the plank. It's like the secret sauce in yoga, paving the path for flexibility and stability. Your body will shoot you a thank-you note when you're striking those Insta-worthy poses.
6. Metabolism Boost
Is your metabolism doing the snooze fest after sitting for ages? Not on plank's watch. Amping up your metabolism means burning more calories—even when you're in snoozeville. A dash of plank love is your secret weapon in the fight against belly fat.
7. Mental Health Bliss
Endorphins, the feel-good vibes. Planks have a knack for targeting stress zones, especially in your shoulders and neck. And let's keep it real—constant stress is no party for your mental health. Planks swoop in like caped crusaders!
So, as you dive into your plank escapade, remember—it's not just a workout; it's a hangout with ancient wisdom and a gift to your body and soul. Say a big ol' hello to the plank, your newfound partner in the fitness groove! And oh, did we mention the epic plank exercise benefits for beginners? It's the perfect kickstart to your fitness journey, especially if you're on a mission to bid adieu to that belly fat!

AOTD 12-18-2023 - Crash Report (Shifting Perspectives)
8/10 [All albums are rated subjectively based off my own enjoyment] Traditionally, sound engineers and producers have fought against distortion to provide the cleanest sounding masters to their clients. Most genres heavily benefit from this, the ability to hear every nook and cranny of every instrument placed flawlessly in the mix
But what if we Like the distortion?
Well, in addition to many other producers of genres such as Hyper Pop and Garage (Or whatever MikkerJ does), Shifting Perspectives seems to like the almost warm, yet rough sound that juuust the right amount of distortion provides, and his album, Crash Report, seems to balance the Hi-Fi needs of most listeners and Shifting's love for that crunch. It was as if the distortion itself was a layer of the sound, and not just a byproduct of going well past a speaker or tube amps capabilities. It felt... Right.
Shifting Perspectives landed this album somewhere between the two aforementioned genres, in what I shall dub Electronic Garage. It opens with Momentary Bliss, a wonderfully over-processed acapella with a gut-wrenching melody that sounds almost as if it's crying out, with plenty of ambience between repetitions that help generate a massive soundscape. It then moves onto cantgetout, which is likely my favorite of the album. It started by laying down some processed vocal chops and a beat before going into a verse, which was briefly lived as it began building up to a HUGE drop. If you've heard Gaia by Aceta and Shifting Perspectives, you know what I'm talking about. The second verse feels much Calmer with an almost acoustic sounding synth driving things forward, before building up for the second, also fantastic drop. If you're cut for time, this is the song to hear.
dead sounds like a much more traditional Electronic track with a chorus that could Kill with it's wonderfully stacked and processed vocals that I'm gonna catch myself belting out in the car. Then the Back Half drop nearly blows that out of the water.
Moving along more quickly now, weak brings in a MIDI-sounding guitar for it's intro before moving onto a more down beat acoustic drum groove with for the rest of the track. Woe Is Me is an album intermission that goes WAY too hard for that, differences/similarities is an ambient take on the Electronic Garage sound before suddenly building up for an Ambient Drop? That somehow goes hard? How the fu-
feelthesame and myself sound like they came straight out a teenage love movies House Party scene with their 4-On-The-Floor house beat. feelthesame uses this to lead into a very rhythmic first drop, before changing gears and adding vocals for the second verse and drop, while myself keeps that beat through the duration of the song, with the exception of the builds before both drops. I REALLY love how the piano sounds in this one.
droplets sarts off much more open than most of the previous tracks, but not quite as ambient as differences/similarities, before moving into this MASSIVE drop section with an absolutely Blazing synth solo, followed by a Really Strange outro sequence. confiding decides to take its time before landing at another absolutely Massive drop after 3 minutes of intro, verse, and slow anticipation, paving the way for the much more energetic back half. Finally crash closes the album with a relatively rock-coded beat and melody driving the first verse and chorus before driving things up for the second verse, before gently setting us back down for the outro vamp.
My only gripes were some stray frequencies here and there and the balance between the instrumental and vocals. While this album wasn't "my genre", I still enjoyed it all the same. I'll be checking out whatever they put out in the future!
Favorite Songs: cantgetout, myself, crash
Least Favorite Songs: differences/similarities

You guys asked, so I thought I would list my playlists here. Whenever I listen to a new track, I try to fit it into one of these  –  📿 The Human Spirit - Songs from the soul. A collection of singers and songwriters that can move the Earth. 🛸 Alien Spa Day - Relax and kick your tentacles up. Essentially a downtempo version of the “Space Bass” playlist
💣 AMPLIFIYAH ⚡- High energy, fast paced, from another planet.
✨ Atmospheric Beats ✨- My most popular / most shared. Light hip-hop influenced tracks to vibe to. Etheric in nature, light and airy, other-worldly and dreamy beats. Save for a rainy day. 🧙🏿‍♂️ Bass Shaman 🔊– Trappy medicine music from your local bass shaman. This one’s new, having fun.
🌊 Crash and Flow 🌊 – It can flow, or it can crash. Liquidy beats that go boom. This is a catch-all from Emancipator -> Clozee type vibes. Essentially an amped up version of “Soothing Sub”
🌑 Dark & Heavy • Slow & Low 🌑 Low frequencies not for the faint of heart. High fidelity speakers, subwoofers, and a certain hint of darkness required.  📀 Dark Garage  One of my favorites I’m always on the hunt for. A dark side of the future garage and dubstep genres. Big, bassy tunes that hum, growl, and rumble.
🚘 Drive Slow, Homie Songs to stare out the window to. A mega-playlist for those long drives home. This my catch-all for anything slow and emotive that doesn’t really fit anywhere else. Tons of gems here.  👾 Dubsteppa - The start of a collection of tracks that remind me of the essence of dub – suggestions welcome.  🇬🇧 Brixton Beats - My bucket for any hip hop with a UK sound.
👸🏾Femme Fatale 💅- Another new one, tracks to appreciate the power that is the new generation of woman.
🎙️ Freestylin - Strictly instrumental beats to freestyle with.
🏎️Full Send 💨- New one, high tempo techno & psytrance.
🔊 Hard Hitters  - Literally, the bassiest things I could find. Big booms with lots of attitude and space in between. Sub-bass speakers required.
💜 Heart Beats - Happy tunes that open the heart and leave you vibin' high <3 [techno, house and trance focused] It’s like a happy version of Palpitations.  🔥 High Frequency Flows - This is my catch-all for anything hip hop. Might need to split it into two eventually, but I try to curate tracks with more thoughtful and emotive lyrics.
🐅 Jungle Rhythm 🌴- Transport yourself to a night in Tulum / Ibiza / techno jungle paradise of your choosing.
🍞 Like Butta - Some gold in here. A modern mix of thick, smooth, hip-hop infused jazz, soul, and funk. "Neo-Soul"
🍄 Organics - Analog inspired, natural sounding world-music grooves. Enjoy a trip in nature with Porangui, Theivery Corporation, Random Rab, etc.
💓 Palpitations - Minimal movements, big feels. Long progressive tracks in the tech house + minimal techno genres. Essentially a slow and somber version of Heart Beats.
😃Positive Energy 😃- Ones that feel good. Easy listening with upbeat tunes for everyone.
👽 Space Bass and Alien Rhythms 👽- Get in touch with your inner extra terrestrial. Squiggly space bass. Waaaay out there, be warned.
🌀 Sound Healing 🌀- Soothe your soul with sonic signals. Frequencies designed to heal and relax with.
🌩  Soothing Sub - Love this one if you have a sound system. Light and soothing with a thick low end. Receive a cellular tune up. Subwoofer / Sub-bass speakers required.
Follow any that catch your eye! Some are new and I’m always adding to them all! Check back every week for new tracks in each genre. And hit me with suggestions!!  Much love,  ∞

An Electrifying Blues Performance by Rock Veterans The Black Crowes
After being delayed for well over a year following the heavily influential covid outbreak, last Saturday’s performance by the Black Crowes proved that live music is back and possibly even better than ever.  I arrived at the show more than two hours in advance and was surprised to see the main parking lot fully packed already, people happily throwing frisbees and sandbags for cornhole as the radiant sun gently settled down into the horizon on a beautiful late-summer night in Homdel, New Jersey.  Even the auxiliary parking lot was packed with most of the same tailgating affairs, this time with the sweet smell of barbecues cooking American favorites along a line in the back of the lot.  The energy was great; a fairly old crowd for a young 20-year-old to be around, but still a lot of positivity and appreciation for a show that, at one time at least, looked like it would never actually happen.
I could hear music already as I descended the stairs of the shuttle bus, which was merely a school bus with an outfitted stereo blasting classic 80’s jams, and it had that warm, saturated classic rock tone that reminded me of all the concerts from the 60’s that I’d never been able to see personally but adored watching in retrospect on YouTube.  PNC Arts Center was just getting warmed up however, and although I thought the opening act, Dirty Honey, did a great job setting the mood and getting the groove going, they were no match for the ‘Crowes, who really couldn’t be beat that night anyways.
Dirty Honey’s setup was demarcated by a big banner proudly displaying their name, separating the stage into a smaller section with all the instruments near the front, but it was obvious that there was a lot more going on behind that screen.  I was especially interested, being a guitar player myself, at the interesting mix of amplifiers that peaked out around the sides.  Oranges, Voxes, a Magnatone stack-I’ll stop there before I geek out too much.  Dirty Honey’s guitar player had a classic Marshall stack, and I was right in the direction of his amp so I could hear all that glorious cranked up sound not just through the coloring PA monitors.  The rest of the band was tight, too, and played with a certain bravado and confidence that made them seem as if they’ve been performing effortlessly for years.  They had a very Aerosmith-meets-Guns N Roses sound, and it kept enough of the bluesy theme for the band to follow without becoming repetitive or too contrived.
The Black Crowe’s came out to an old-school, wild-west bar scene toward the back left-side of the stage.  Looking collected and totally in the zone, the band swung their prop drinks in the air and made out like they were having a grand old time.  Like old friends uniting at their favorite old bar spot after a day of motorcycling across the vast American west.  One member slinks off behind the bar and appears in the next moment with a guitar in his hand, strumming a proud opening guitar riff to the song Twice As Hard.  After a few phrases, the rest of the band appears at their positions having grabbed all their necessary tools from roadies obscured to the side of the stage, and they jump into the first track.  They immediately sound great as a band, with a tight rhythm section led primarily by the drummer’s commanding right foot, but the mix leaves something to be desired; luckily, all the sliders on the mixing board are sorted before the end of the first song, and the sound remains great throughout the rest of their performance allowing the talented musicians to really leave an individualistic impression on a classic, blues-based collage of tracks.  The band plays through the entirety of their hit album, Shake Your Money Maker, and no song goes without clapping and applause.  By the third track every band member is really in the groove, and you can tell that they were having a great time, as well, as they looked at each other during dynamics and solos in little nods of approval.
Tumblr media
The Black Crowe’s are led by two brothers, Chris and Rich Robinson, and as is often the case with brothers in a rock band, they’ve had their rough patches in the band’s history.  But absolutely no hint of animosity was present in the show.  In fact, Chris took a moment to celebrate his brother’s birthday which happened to be on the day of the concert, and Rich seemed like he was celebrating his birthday in his favorite fashion-rocking out and picking up good vibes from the audience.  I loved how the band managed to alter their tone throughout the show even though they played a majority of songs from only one record that has one particular sound.  The two guitarists switched amps and guitars throughout, but always managed to sound balanced and rich in texture.  Chris’s vocals sounded great, as well, and he barely relied on his two backup singers who spent a good portion of the show dancing rather than trying to fill in or take the burden off the vocal section.  Chris sounded lively and energetic, and he moved around the stage like a true classic rock singer who knows they must be as entertaining as they sound in order to convey the true spirit of a rock performance.  I would also be remiss without mentioning how great the lead guitarist, Isaiah Mitchell played all night long.  As a longtime fan of strong lead players like Mick Taylor, his sound and techniques, whether playing with a pick, using a slide or picking with his fingers celebrated the spirit of fantastic guitarists like Mick, and I felt that this was the closest I would ever get to hearing a true masterful lead player in person, something I was especially blown away by considering how little recognition Isaiah gets as a player in the guitar community.  He could’ve blown Clapton off the stage that night and trust me I would never say that about an amateur player.
With enough hit songs in the setlist to catch the ears of even the most casual fans in conjunction with some hand-picked favorites that only dedicated fans would know, The Black Crowes performed a fantastic show with plenty of tonal and rhythmic variety to keep things interesting despite the heavy blues focus.  Given their age, every band member brought considerable energy and vivacity to this performance, and I’d be shocked if they could perform better than this on another tour date that will bring them all the way from the American west coast to Europe later this fall.  If you’re lucky enough to catch them on a later tour date, I highly recommend going and even urge you to consider picking an upscale seat as it’ll allow you to appreciate the finer details of their cohesive and masterful mix of good-old, blues-based rock n’ roll.

Fine Line by Harry Styles: The Sunshine We Needed Through A Very Dreary Year
Or An Album Review (One Year Later)
On December 13, 2019, Harry Styles graced the world with his second studio album, Fine Line, and I don’t think it has ever left my Recently Played section on my Spotify account since its release.
I honestly don’t know how I would have survived 2020 without this album. As I reflect on everything this year had to offer, I realized this record will always shine through as it is tied to my best memories of the year.
I listened to this album a lot, with three of my five top songs from my Spotify Wrapped coming from Fine Line. (They were “Sunflower, Vol. 6″, “Golden”, and “To Be So Lonely”, respectively, if you were curious!)
I spent dull afternoons in January walking around the freshly snow covered ground on my college campus blasting “Lights Up” in my headphones. This single was released in October 2019, two months prior to the release of Fine Line, and had been a top favorite of mine with its 70s soulful style. Not to mention, the small choir of backup singers and layering synth gave me an almost nostalgic as the Christmas season started to come to an end. This song was all about finding who you are- and I was starting to figure out who I am with it.
The next month I visited Denver for a conference and I began noticing how this record was starting to become the soundtrack to my year. February’s track was “Sunflower, Vol. 6″ where I started to feel my attachment to this song. I am not sure if it was the mesmerizing lyrics, the drums, or even the Indian instrument known as a sitar that made me really hooked to this song... But as I walked through the streets of rainy Denver (which would normally make me feel very gloomy), I couldn’t help grinning from ear-to-ear as I listened to this song. It’s the feel-good musical track you listen to, in whatever mood you’re in.
Sometimes I can’t fathom how apocalyptic March felt. The beginning of March was completely normal, and I was at my peak. Looking back now, I can’t wrap my head around that I attended five live shows within one week during that month. But all good things come to an end, right? And of course suddenly, it all came crashing down. I was sent packing up my college freshman dorm and moved back home with my parents while juggling all my courses remotely. There was a song that I was always replaying though, and that was “Golden.” Arguably one of the most upbeat tracks on Fine Line, next to “Sunflower, Vol. 6,″ but the lyrics say otherwise. As the opening track, it has a very chill pop vibe, but listen closely to the lyrics. The contrast pulls at my heartstrings every. single. time.
“Cherry” and April go hand-in-hand for me. As I continued to navigate my thoughts and feelings with the pandemic, struggling with the course load of online courses, and overall the anxiousness of all the unknowns- “Cherry” was the comfort I needed. With its soft acoustic guitar, it is the perfect song for any in-your-feels playlist. And trust me when I say that the fragility of “Cherry” really helped me when I was in my feels.
Arguably the biggest summer hit of this year was “Watermelon Sugar,” and my go-to anthem of wanting to feel any normalcy of a summer that I stayed mostly indoors for. I remember when the music video dropped in May, I was grabbing coffee with a friend and begged her to watch the video with me. We sat in her car in the middle of a park, watching the YouTube video count down to the premiere of “Watermelon Sugar”. That “this video is dedicated to touching” opening message made me laugh and realized how truly brilliant Harry’s mind is. The warm, very enjoyable tune made this the perfect summer anthem with its really good electric guitar and slide guitar mixed with the horn. It’s the one song that will stay in your head for weeks.
Another song that feels like summer to me is “Canyon Moon.” In the end of June, I went ‘glamping’ (otherwise known as glamorous camping, we stayed in a very nice tiny house in the middle of the most wooded area that Nebraska could get) with my family. It’s a very upbeat song with a nostalgic feel, and the fun instrument rhythms can’t help but make you beam. The song also experiments with a dulcimer; a musical instrument with a long rounded body and a fretted fingerboard played by bowing, plucking, and strumming. I think this is what makes the song more upbeat and happy, especially the beginning as well as the slide guitar giving it unique sounds throughout. It personally is one of my least favorites on the album, but it does make me think of warm summer days and spending time with family every time I do listen to it.
July was starting to feel a little rough for me again. I was really getting tired of staying indoors and barely seeing any of my friends. I was really longing to go back to school and being around my people again. “To Be So Lonely” was a song that felt like it really understood me. Harry revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone that the song was composed on a guitalele, which resembles the sound of guitar, for that light and upbeat tone that the chords give off, backing the lyrics. It’s the perfect song you listen to when you’re sad, and you’re ready to push past it. And I knew that I was ready to push past my sadness because I had one more month until I was surrounded in community.
“Adore You” was the second single of Fine Line that was released. This song is filled with so much love and passion- and it was the same immense feelings I had in August when I got ready to move back to my college town and see all my friends again. As I packed my bags and moved into my sorority house, I constantly played this song. What can I say? This was a really great song to vibe with, especially with the opening keyboard and the consistent bass that you cannot help but groove to!
Out of all the months of this year, surprisingly September was one of my darkest. With only two weeks living into my sorority house, I made the decision to move out for the safety of mine and my family’s health. I moved back in with my parents again during this month, and I felt completely lost. “Falling” had the same underlying message of being lost. This love ballad displays a theme of brokenness and creates a tone of unhappiness- the perfect song for a post-breakup or an in-your-feels playlist. I had this song on repeat more times than I can count- the soft piano setting a broken and lonely tone.
The beginning of October began to really turn around for me. I moved into an apartment with one of my best friends and I was back in my college town. I was starting to find community again and “Treat People With Kindness” became this month’s anthem. Coined after Harry’s Treat People With Kindness (TPWK) campaign, this song has a 1970s sound and makes you want to dance along with the catchy choir lyrics such as “Maybe we can/Find a place to feel good/And we can treat people with kindness”. The lyrics were very prevalent in my life, especially with the amping news of the presidential election and the continuation of the pandemic. This song was the best reminder to be kind to myself, and those around me. And let’s not forget the conga sound throughout! I believe Queen would have been very proud of this underrated track.
The timeless mature sound of “She” could have not fit November anymore. I celebrated my twentieth birthday this month (which of course included a Harry Styles themed birthday party with my roommate and some close friends). The guitar kicking in at the chorus giving so much emotion to Harry’s voice, and that’s exactly how I felt around my birthday. Lots of emotions. Not to mention, the guitar solo played by Mitch Rowland sounds like it could have been something that was released years ago, with a little modern touch. It’s growing to be one of my personal favorites on the album.
Lastly, we get to December and I felt as if this year was the longest year of my life (but also flown by way too quick). The song that resonated with me most this month was “Fine Line,” the last track of the album (and the longest at 6 minutes and 16 seconds). My favorite memories in December consist of driving around with my friend, looking at all the Christmas lights as we drink hot cocoa and blast “Fine Line”- singing our hearts out to the repetitive lyrics of “we’ll be fine line” and “we’ll be alright.” Harry discussed in an interview with Capital FM that this song would always be the last on the album, and how fitting that I resonated with this song most in the last month of the year. “Fine Line” represents the ups and downs of life, and the thin line that separates the two. This song that includes an orchestra, drums, horn, acoustic guitar, and melodies building in the background, it could not be the most perfect finale to the album- and to the year 2020.
Today is December 13, 2020- exactly one year after Fine Line has been released. Since then, Harry Styles has made headlines from petty to political. He has shown up for Black Lives Matter, cared for our sleeping habits by releasing an audio bedtime story, made us feel confident in wearing whatever we want as he appeared as the first solo male on American Vogue- all while accomplishing some of his greatest achievements with this album: releasing five music videos, being nominated for three Grammys, and climbing the music charts and catching the hearts of critics.
But Harry accomplished something even greater- he made an album that made us feel good when it was nearly impossible to. To put it frankly- Fine Line was my comfort album, and I know that it was a lot of other people’s too. And as we step into the new year, with the help of this album, it does in fact feel like... we’ll be alright.

Listening to tunes.
Right now I have that (not inexpensive ) Super Tramp "Breakfast" album. You know the Audiophile version A&M Canada made. It sounds really damn good. I gave it a good clean. Actually I bought a jug of "Groove Washer" which is made by the heirs of the original Disc Washer product. They claim to use the original formula. Not the made in China, not sure what it is, stuff. The bottle is big enough for 4 life times I think. It works good.
I spun up the LP with no real warm up. And it had some rough edges in the high treble. Even after a couple tracks it is getting better. Gotta work that entropy out you know. Get them electrons lined up and dancing.
I have spent maybe too much $$ on LPs recently. And some of the deliveries get dinged at the border by FEDEX. Free Shipping my ass.
The weather is cool and wet today. Perfect for sitting on the couch and using the system. Everything but the phono cartridge and the speakers is 30 or 40 years old. I would put it up against any system I have ever heard, or can hear in this city.
Yes we are still using the Tube Amp. It is lovely sounding. Over the last few days I have been thinking about and discussing why it sounds as it does. Usually Tube versus Transistors discussions fall into fights. One side against the other. Screw that, I like both sides for what they bring to the party.
Back when photography was all film some people swore by different brands and types of film. AGFA, FUJI, Kodak and others I cannot think of right now. (yes I am old). The reason they did was for the subtle differences the formulas gave to the resulting prints. Was one perfect or correct? No perfection then or now. But some films and print paper made really fine images. And that was the point!
Everybody seems to need to stick a war banner in some heap of truth. Tubes versus solid state is only one. Digital versus analog is big. Oh and you get magic speaker cables and interconnects. It all plays to a particular audience.
One thing the Tube Guru said to me in our dialog is that Audio Research had to keep faithful to the "tube sound" their customer base expects. They could but will not make a more perfect amplifier. Still they make things of excellent quality and have for many decades. Think about that against the ideal of continually improving. If you approach perfection the voice goes away.
I can testify that over 50 odd years of listening to stereos my system has got better, but the state of the art has not. It is a soft mushy set of goals with each team making their own rules.
Oh this track is amazing. A piano showing why it's a percussion instrument. Last track, hmmm inner groove distortion what's that? Aint any here.
Still have the AT 7V in the phaser TT. You want depth? That sax just strode up from the back to front.
Ok now for some serious Jazz. Miles Davis. This recording is almost as old as I am. The LP is new of course. Where did this idea of limited dynamic range come from. That Trumpet is powerful. I like that the mix does not try to park everyone in the centre. One Sax is hard left the other centre right. The drum kit is to the right. Piano centre left. I suspect the reverb is added. Oh I just checked the studio was a converted church and had excellent room sound. So apologies to the engineer, its real.
Just grooving.
I am going to stop writing now.
