There's... a lot wrong with this case and the framing as some kind of victory for disability rights.

To start with the obvious, "their parents"/"your child." Parents should have no power over or involvement (except in an advisory capacity if their adult children request it) in the education of 21-22 year old adults. Whenever some kind of policy about disabled people centers on parents, be suspicious. When it centers parents of adults, be VERY suspicious. The policy of allowing disabled students until age 22 to complete high school is one that could be argued is a good thing. There are a variety of reasons why it might take disabled students longer than average to complete high school graduation. But I would be very curious to see, of the students who aged out at 21 and then were allowed to return to school (excuse me, whose parents were allowed to send them back to school) for an additional year, how many of them in that additional year actually complete the requirements for graduation? How many leave with a degree? How many get a GED? How many are eligible to pursue postsecondary education if they choose it (hopefully their parents won’t have a say in that)?

I am all for anyone of any age achieving any educational attainment. “Milestones” and “life stages” are fake, and I love pointing out that over half of college students in the U.S. are over 25. But we’re not talking about colleges, which are designed for adults of a broad age range. We’re talking about high school. Is a high school designed for 14-18 year olds really a better fit for a 22 year old student than, say, a community college, continuing education program, or adult education center? At the risk of being ageist myself, is a 22 year old really going to be comfortable surrounded by kids? Of course, this is a silly question – overwhelmingly, adults kept on in highschool through 22 aren’t in integrated classes in the first place. Which only furthers my point: Is this really about expanding educational opportunities for disabled young adults, or about warehousing them and not letting them grow up, at their parents’ behest?

Biography

Kobe Bryant was an American professional basketball player born on August 23, 1978, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. We’re talking about the powerful “oompah” instrument that is the Tuba, and International Tuba Day celebrates the depth and diversity of sound that this beautiful brass wind is capable of producing.

History of International Tuba Day

These amazing performers really are underappreciated, and International Tuba Day gives recognition to them and all the struggles they face in the pursuit of their art. What struggles you say? Well, let’s start with the image that the world puts forth, the big heavy man with the big heavy instrument puffing away on it with cheeks like bellows.

That’s typically the first vision, and it often underscores the sheer lung capacity necessary for playing such a bombastic instrument. They’re also seen as having little to no personality, which is just utterly untrue! Playing such a lumbering instrument requires a significant amount of personality to make the performance bright and interesting!

Thankfully, we have a champion to come forth and help turn this image around. Joel Day first established this holiday in 1979 while part of the Lower Merion High School Band.

He and his fellow tuba player realized that their instruments simply failed to receive the respect and recognition they deserved. Little did he know that his efforts would result in a worldwide explosion of Tuba enthusiasm, with music being collected and performed that exalted the Tuba’s range and interest.

How to celebrate International Tuba Day

Well first off, if you’re a Tuba player, dust off that instrument and give the world a taste of what it’s been missing. The grand and powerful voice of the Tuba is amazing, and in the hands of a skilled player can definitely add a broad range of personality to any performance.

It’s deep, throaty, and not to be denied. You may be able to drown out the flutes and saxophones and violins, but the Tuba will pound right through the sound and make you feel it in your bones. International Tuba Day is your opportunity to remind the world what a Tuba player can do.

Last night, my father and I were lucky enough to see and meet the Philadelphia Eagles’ legendary play-by-play announcer Merrill Reese at Lower Merion High School for Main Line School Night. This will go down as one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. We began the night by singing and rooting the Eagles’ Fight song. He absolutely loved it. He’s about to enter his 47th season as the voice of the Birds. He talked about his early life, how he got the job, and what’s he’s been doing since. He discussed the good people and the not-so-good people he worked with, including Dick Vermeil and Bill Campbell. He took a moment to acknowledge late legendary Phillies announcer Harry Kalas and Chris Wheeler not contacting each other for 10 years at the time of Kalas’ death. Also, the most heartbreaking and exciting moments in franchise history, including the controversial Holding call that cost us Super Bowl LVII, the Miracle at the Meadowlands and Super Bowl LII. For the latter, the call for the fans who waited so long and so patiently for: “The Philadelphia Eagles are Super Bowl champions! Eagles fans everywhere, this is for you! Let the celebration begin!” He loves watching the Phillies and the 76ers as long as the Sixers are in the playoffs. He roots for them, too. When he finished talking, I raised my hand and was handed a 🎤 by one of the ladies associated with MLSN and asked him if he knew fellow Philadelphia sportscasting legend Gene Hart, the voice of the Flyers. Before that, I complimented him for still going and being such an inspiration. I told him that I’ve been a fan of commentary. He was so kind in telling me the story of how Gene used to be an elementary school teacher prior to becoming a broadcaster. They both used to go out to dinner with a friend of theirs in Jersey. And get this: Gene Hart’s wife Sarah Detwiler used to ride Atlantic City’s Diving Horse at the Steel Pier Diving Horses attraction.🏇 After the Q&A was over, I lined up with my dad and we got our photo taken with Merrill. He signed his autograph on my Eagles cap, and it’s hanging in my bedroom. Hopefully, we’ll come back next year and win SB LVIII. Kevin Newsome

I believe that it was April of 1992 when I first met Kevin Newsome.  I was a student at the University of Delaware.  I had walked onto the basketball team (and made it) earlier in my tenure at UD, and now I was coaching my own high school all-star team, Johnny Mac’s Eastern All Stars.  It was the second year of coaching in the Delaware Shootout, which was a rather prominent event on the high school circuit on the East Coast.  

After one of our games, Kevin Newsome came over to introduce himself.  I didn’t know him, yet he told me that he just got the job as the new Head Coach at Wilmington College in New Castle, DE, which was roughly 20 minutes away from UD.  He said that he had asked people in Philly and Delaware about who he should hire as an assistant, and apparently people had given him my name (I still don’t know who those people were).  I was taken aback, as I had just turned 22 years old, and I was still in college.  He asked if I was interested, and I said that, yes, I’d be interested.

Shortly after our initial conversation, we went to a fancy restaurant called Taco Bell to talk further.  It was there, at Taco Bell in New Castle, DE, where I agreed to be an assistant basketball coach at Wilmington College.  In hindsight, this offer, and this decision, changed my life.

......and it was because a guy named Kevin Newsome took a chance on me.

We worked together for three seasons at a program that had struggled for years.  In our first year, our team reached the NAIA Division II National Tournament in Nampa, ID, for the first time ever.  Two years later, we reached the NAIA Division II Tournament again.  

Kevin resigned, and the Athletic Director, Craig Wolfe, took chance on a 25-year-old, and named me the Head Coach at Wilmington College.  I am so incredibly grateful to Kevin Newsome, and to Craig Wolfe.  The changed the trajectory of my life.

Last week, I got a text from Mike Egan.  We talked minutes later.  Mike was our other assistant coach at Wilmington College during the Kevin Newsome era.  (Mike has some great stories and experiences after he left Wilmington and became as Assistant Coach at Lower Merion High School during Kobe Bryant’s senior season).  Mike wanted to let me know that Kevin Newsome had throat cancer, and it was bad.  He had just been sent home from the hospital, and the didn’t think that he had very long to live.  I began to alert some of the players that had played for our teams.  Within 24 hours of our conversation, Kevin Newsome passed away.  

My memories have been flowing with both joy from the times that we shared, and sadness that he is gone.  Kevin Newsome took a chance on me, and changed my life.

Rest in peace, Coach Kevin Newsome.....
