Lucy Percy Hay, Countess of Carlisle (1599-1660), Van Dyck c1637, private collection.
Her father was the so called “wizard Earl” Henry Percy Earl of Northumberland and her mother Dorothy Deveraux one of the Earl of Essex’s sisters. Dorothy in turn was the daughter of Lettice Knollys, who was herself in turn the daughter of Catherine Carey the daughter of Mary Boleyn - sister of Anne Boleyn and aunt of Elizabeth I - and maybe Henry VIII himself depending on if you think he was Catherine Carey’s father or not.
Despite this illustrious linage, Lucy’s childhood was overshadowed by her fathers incarceration in the Tower of London for his alleged role in the gunpowder plot, and the collapse of her parents marriage. At age 17 Lucy eloped with James Hay, Viscount Doncaster, a member of James Is bedchamber and minor favorite who was twice her age and a widower with children. Although she claimed to be in love with him, it’s just as likely Lucy saw James Hay as her ticket out of the tower and to court.
Around 1620 it’s believed that Lucy became lovers with the then Marquis of Buckingham, with her husbands approval - George was the key to the king and to favors. The gamble paid off as the Doncasters were created Earl and Countess of Carlisle about this time. Lucy and George would remain involved until his death in 1628. Her husband James died in 1632 leaving Lucy a wealthy, well-connected, child-free widow; and a major figure at Charles I’s court as the sometimes ally, sometimes frenemy of the Queen. She was said to be one of the great beauties and wits of the era, and her salon was a major hub of political networking and literary patronage. She was also, despite her reputation for libertinage, something of a puritan.
The above painting was a gift for another rumored lover; Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Stafford, Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
During the civil war Lucy developed a reputation for playing both sides for the middle, eventually returning to the tower for involvement in conspiracies against the newly established commonwealth. She died of a stroke in 1660, her days of glory long behind her.
There has never been a proper biography or study of Lucy and her career, despite being one of the major political influence brokers, intelligence agents, and cultural patrons of the age. Instead, Lucy is mostly remembered today as the potential inspiration for Milady de Winter from The Three Musketeers, along with a number of other salacious stories of varying accuracy, such as supposedly informing the five MPs of their impending arrest in 1642. Due to the fact few of her papers have survived, getting to the woman behind the sensational legends is not easy.

My first de Winter fanart! I wanted to draw her in the same style I did for the Mouskos but more intellectual-oriented (like Aramis). I took a lot from Van Dyck's portrait of Lucy Hay (1637), the countess of Carlisle who might have inspired Dumas' Milady.
The hair is supposed to evoke a cortex, with an inking appendix to write her name and the secret letters she's holding (next adventure's Mac-Guffins?)
Her mantis-like right arm symbolizes her past as a nun and her "complicated" conjugal relationships, same for the mechanical spider legs (which also embody her craftiness at extending her influence). Although both animals don't cannibalize their male counterparts 100% of the time ( more like 1 time out of 3 but still!)
Far less ambiguous: the venomous snake-shaped glass carafe. There's something in this wine and it's not just grape!

WARNING: REVEALING REVIEW, SPOILER ALERT
I had this review typed up on my tablet the other night when I finished reading the book, but Emma stepped on the keyboard and it got deleted! It was not meant to be. I have spent the past couple of days thinking about the review I wrote that night and Emma was correct. I had too much of the book in my review. So here goes my second attempt to tell you about this incredible book.
This is the third and probably last installment of the Thomas Tallant Mysteries. If you haven’t read either of the previous two books, you are certainly missing out on some really good reading. This third book takes place in the autumn of 1642. That in itself should tell you that this is an unusual series. Not too much historical fiction is written for this period. Our main characters are Thomas Tallant and Elizabeth Seymour. Thomas is from a merchant family. They own ships and bring merchandise into the London docks near their home. His father is Sir Ralph and his mother is Lady Beatrix. They are all for keeping their noses in the business and trying to ride out the current political troubles as best they can. In case you don’t know your history, this is the beginning of the Civil War between the King and Parliament, the royals and the roundheads.
Elizabeth is Lady Elizabeth Seymour. She isn’t important in the court, but she does know some highly-placed people in the court circles. William Harvey, Physician in Ordinary to King Charles for one. She and Sir William enjoy discussing astronomy, anatomy, and other scientific things. They also enjoy partaking in tobacco. Elizabeth smokes a pipe. Another is Lucy Hay, Countess of Carlisle, who has recently changed sides along with lovers. She summons Elizabeth as she has a message for her and a request. Sir William is looking forward to having Elizabeth’s company. And could Lucy perhaps borrow Thomas for a task? Oh, by the way, your necklace is mine. It was stolen from my home a couple of weeks ago. Elizabeth ends up sleuthing into the case of the gang of jewel thieves currently tearing around London, as well as the long and hazardous journey to locate William Harvey and the King. She finally locates him at a battlefield where the two of them end up treating the wounded and they both are rather overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of injured and dying soldiers. Surely tracking down jewel thieves is easier.
Thomas meanwhile has been loaned out to the Parliament militia, The London Trained Bands, under the command of Philip Skippon. The two men hit it off and Thomas is sent off with two favored troopers on a special mission to resolve the gunpowder source for the royalists. Spite and betrayal play a very large part in Thomas’ mission and he comes close to dying several times. He does see friends die in the process and becomes a bit bitter due to the betrayal.
My favorite scene in the whole book is when Elizabeth goes back to Lucy to let her know about the jewel investigation and loses it. Elizabeth is physically and emotionally worn out from the jewel thief who had been stalking her and threatening her as well as her journey to Sir William Harvey and their time at the battlefield. She is faced with this woman who hasn’t left her comfortable home through it all, who is practically hissing in her face about baubles while people are dying. Elizabeth simply lets go with all of the pain and anger she has inside her. I loved it. Granted, the Countess then banishes her, but I think it was worth it for Elizabeth to have her say. Brava!
I know this is intended to be the last of the Thomas Tallant Mysteries, but I really hope that the author listens to what his readers are saying in these reviews and keeps going with them. We love these books. His way of putting history on paper and the story of this young couple is just so appealing. Too appealing to end here. CORRECTION: THIS IS NOT THE END..MORE TO COME!
Recommended.

Lucy, Countess of Carlisle by Sir Anthonis van Dyck (auctioned by Sotheby's). L08035 Lot 259. The sleeves are turned back with pearl clasps to reveal a luxurious lining.
According to Wikipedia, “Lucy Hay, Countess of Carlisle (née Percy; 1599 – 5 November 1660) was an English courtier known for her beauty and wit...” The basic style persisted for decades once ruffs had morphed to collars that subsided. This could date to the 1640s.

Portrait of Woman, called Lucy Percy, Countess of Carlisle, Adriaan Hanneman, c.1650, Minneapolis Institute of Art: Paintings
Portrait of a woman in a green dress and brown scarf with flowers in her hair, pearl necklace and earrings, at a fountain. Lucy Percy (1599–1660) was one of the best known ladies at the court of King Charles I of England. She was a celebrated wit and had a penchant for political intrigue and scandal. In 1617 she married the notorious rake, James Hay, Earl of Carlisle, without her father's consent. She quickly involved herself in court circles, eventually becoming an intimate friend of Queen Henrietta Maria. After the death of her husband, she shifted her loyalty to the Republican party and was able to give its leaders important information concerning the royal family. Upon the restoration of Charles II, she conveniently switched her affections back to the Royalists, and tried to regain her position at court. But before she could make any marked progress in this direction, she died. Conservation of this picture was made possible by a generous contribution from Al and Dena Naylor through the Art Champions program. Size: 32 x 26 in. (81.28 x 66.04 cm) (canvas) Medium: Oil on canvas

P5R Spoilers under the cut!
So I was looking at the in-game lore for all of the Phantom Thieves’ new, third Personas... and one in particular jumped out at me. Lucy, Haru’s new Persona, is described like this:
"The Countess of Carlisle, and the historical basis for Alexandre Dumas's femme fatale, Milady de Winter. Known for her beauty and cunning, she was a courtier much favored by the Queen."
I know it’s referring to the Queen of England but with Makoto’s codename being Queen I couldn’t help but advance the Okujima agenda, thank you that is all goodbYE--
