France’s Ludovic Navarre is world-famous and has been critically lauded for his work as St. Germain. His indispensable, timeless, and groundbreaking 1995 debut album, Boulevard, reflects an exquisite blending of jazz and house music and has sold over a whopping 300,000 copies worldwide. First, think of how many dance musicians in the 90s (the early 90s!) released full albums. Second, think of how many copies they sold. The answer to both of those is very little, but Navarre has been able to transcend the house scene in France, not just by making music to dance to, but by making it thought-provoking, too, resulting in music that is both physically and mentally stimulating. As a result, the highly regarded British dance music magazine, Muzik, named Boulevard its album of the year in 1995.

Before enjoying the success of Boulevard and becoming a world-renowned electronic musician, Navarre was a versatile house and techno producer. In 1992, he and his pal Guy Rabiller signed to Fnac Dance Music Division and by 1993, Navarre had adopted his St. Germain moniker. It was also the year he began teaming up with dance music stalwart Laurent Garnier, who would co-found F Communications, the immediate successor to Fnac. At Fnac and F Com, Navarre’s work transitioned from acid-laced house and techno jams to the signature smooth and jazzy deep house sound he is now revered for.

The stellar opener on Boulevard, “Deep In It,” actually originally appeared in 1994, in a truncated fashion, on an hour-long Laurent Garnier mix called Mixmag Live! Volume 19. A full version then appeared in March of 1995 on Boulevard 1/3, a 12-inch that contained the first few tracks from the then-forthcoming album.

“Deep In It” represents a perfect fusion of house beat with what sounds like improvised jazz. Navarre, who wrote and produced the song, enlists Parisian Alexandre Destrez to perform on piano, a man who is known for his improvisational style. Together, they wield a piece of absolute deep house magic.

The beginning of “Deep In It” wracks with anticipation for a kick drum. Destrez provides multiple sets of wanderingly mellow notes as Navarre slowly constructs his backbeat. He begins with warm, vibrating bass and then adds rich piano chords. Rustling hi-hats, followed by hand claps, mix themselves in ever so slowly, and after a minute and 50 seconds, a booming 4/4 kick drum is finally inserted. The song then begins to take off.

With the kick drum in place, Destrez plays in a sort of fragmentary manner, leaving considerable amounts of space between phrases, but as he continues, those phrases become more interconnected and Destrez then plays with a seeming lack of inhibition. After he concludes his portion, the beat rides for a little bit, and an uncredited ringing xylophone enters the fray, taking a similar approach as Destrez to its progression. For the song’s final segment, with the beat continuing to fully pump away, Destrez’s opening bars make a welcomed reappearance. As this familiar piece proceeds to advance again, the backbeat swings in reverse, fully disintegrating to the song’s conclusion.

Quite easily one of the greatest pieces of deep house ever made. Over 25 years old and it still bangs.
