Mara Jade: Nobody thinks Skywalker is my husband, okay? Talon Karrde: Put your hand up if you thought Luke and Mara were married. Everyone: [raises their hand] Mara Jade: Mara Jade: Put your hand down, Luke.

Our first spotlight is the wedding of the galaxy’s most eligible Jedi bachelor, Luke Skywalker, with former Emperor’s Hand and current Jedi Master Mara Jade in 19 ABY on Coruscant.
Why is this important?
Luke and Mara are in many ways the power couple of Star Wars Legends (along with Leia Organa and Han Solo). While Leia and Han were shown as a committed couple by the end of Return of the Jedi, Luke Skywalker spent a fair amount of the Legends continuity in various ultimately doomed love affairs. Mara Jade, one of the most prominent characters to originate in Legends, was introduced in the Thrawn trilogy and clearly had some chemistry with Luke from the start, as well as going on her own journey from Emperor’s Hand to smuggler to Jedi knight to Jedi master before ending up with Luke.
How does it happen?
The engagement takes place toward the end of Timothy Zahn’s novel Vision of the Future, appropriately happening in the middle of a life-or-death situation. The room they are in is filling up with water, and Luke asks Mara to marry him. She says, “You mean, if we get out of this alive?” and he says, “I mean regardless.”
The wedding and the leadup take place in Star Wars: Union, a four-unit comic series written by X-Wing series writer Michael Stackpole. Most of the series deals with the more mundane events leading up to any wedding— choosing a dress, the bachelor / bachelorette parties, the wedding itself, and moments from the reception— but the happy couple being who they are, of course there is danger, intrigue, and shenanigans. There are actually two weddings: a Jedi wedding only attended by members of the Jedi Order early in the series, and a formal wedding that serves as a major event for the New Republic.
The Jedi portion of the wedding largely goes off without a hitch, but the New Republic ceremony is where the shenanigans come in.
We see Mara attempt to “say yes to the dress” only to be confronted with some of the worst fashion crimes imaginable, then find her dream designer out in the alley, having been originally prevented from preventing her designs by her evil boss.

Luke’s bachelor party at the Red Rancor (attended by Han Solo, Wedge Antilles, Chewbacca, Gavin Darklighter, Talon Karrde, Wes Janson, Derek “Hobbie” Klivian, Tycho Celchu, Kam Solusar, Corran Horn, Booster Terrik, and Lando Calrissian) ends in a bar fight instigated by a Moff who is trying to kill Luke / prevent the wedding.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the women (Mara, Leia, Tionne Solusar, Winter Celchu, Mirax Terrik Horn, and Iella Wessiri Antilles) have a spa day and then kick some ass in a slingball game.
The day of the ceremony is a major New Republic event, with people like Mon Mothma in attendance and Admiral Ackbar presiding. A Moff is determined to interrupt the ceremony and violently prevent the festivities, but Chewie, the Jedi, and the Rogues take care of that while those with parts in the ceremony carry on. Meanwhile, Booster Terrik has been tasked with keeping the children quiet during the ceremony, including his grandson Valin Horn as well as Myri and Syal Antilles and Jaina, Jacen, and Anakin Solo.
Finally, we see the happy couple wed:

…And various other couples at the ceremony get nostalgic about their own weddings as they enjoy the reception.

“What did he just say?!”
Mara glared anger and embarrassment at her rescuee, to Karrde’s not-so-objective appraisal.
“’Love of my life,’” the smuggler quoted, matter-of-factly.  “It’s the skirtopanol, don’t blame Skywalker.  At least you got to him before the physical torture started.”
“It’s not skirtopanol.”
Karrde let silence answer, unsurprised Mara wanted to argue the facts in this instance.
“Xebonica, maybe,” she continued.
“Love of my life,” the Jedi repeated into her scowling face.
“Shut up, Skywalker,” she hissed.
Karrde knew when Mara’s tether was about to snap.
“Clean up and rest, Mara.  I’ll get the…Xebonica out of his system.”

New Posting! Mara Jade Memoir Part 2 - Lightsabers Are Always Loaded!
Welcome to Part 2 of My Decisions, My Reasons: a Mara Jade memoir
Chapter 1 is up! Lightsabers Are Always Loaded - Chapter 1 This part of Mara’s story was harder to write than Darkness Kicks Back as there were more elements of canon that needed to be woven together to address this stage in Mara’s life and less overall direction from existing works. This is, of course, part of the point of this project. Mara often showed up in canon when it was considered useful for the story with only vague explanations of how she had been spending her time. This is an attempt to expand upon those vague descriptions and explore her motivations over the years.
Here, Mara talks about her experiences building the Smugglers’ Alliance as well as her early dabbling in Jedi training as she tries to figure out who she is in the galaxy now that she is free of Palpatine’s command.
This section covers the time period between the end of The Last Command and the defeat of Exar Kun just under halfway through Champions of the Force and I, Jedi.

More from the Mara-fakes-her-death fic
“I need five standard minutes.” Ignoring Karrde’s bare feet and the way his dress shirt hung open, Mara held up the bulb of pulkay.
His eyes narrowed, something that wasn’t quite concern flickering behind them. Then his lips pursed and he slanted his gaze left.
“He can join us. Or not. Your choice.”
Karrde stepped back, the thick carpet swallowing the sound of his movement, and Mara slipped through the doorway. She took in the space at a glance, from the wall of privacy-shielded windows to the Quarzite chandelier to the man sitting up on the lounger to the right of the doorway.
“Mara,” Lando greeted warmly, unfazed by being caught in nothing more than a borrowed bathrobe of plum velvet, his usually flawless hair disheveled. “To what do we owe the pleasure?”
“Business,” Talon stated, appearing at Mara’s side with three squat glasses. Putting them on the table, he took the bulb from her. “What’s happened?”
“I need to disappear.”
Both men went still, the full weight of their attention settling on her.
“Now?” Lando asked in consternation after a moment. “Aren’t you in the middle of —”
“Yes,” Mara agreed. “Which is why you’re going to help me fake my death.”
“There’s no way to exit negotiations without causing a scene,” Talon murmured, resuming his pouring. “So you’re choosing the only scene they can’t take action against.” He paused. “I assume there’s a suitably drastic cause for such an extreme action?”
“There is, but it might be best if I don’t tell you now.”
“I see. Will you be telling anyone else?”
Her expression fell somewhere between nonplussed and what have you done with your brain? “No.” Impatience crept in at his continued silence. “Who the fuck would I tell?”
“Skywalker?” Talon suggested, keeping his tone as light as possible.
Mara snorted. “Skywalker won’t even notice that I’m gone.”

Talon Karrde: What are your concerns? Luke Skywalker: Well, you’ve kidnapped me. Talon Karrde: Hmm, noted. Go on. Luke Skywalker: And you threw me in this dungeon. Talon Karrde: I see. Anything else? Luke Skywalker: Uh, no. But... hmm. No, I guess those are the main two. Talon Karrde: Thank you. Your feedback is a gift.

Hello
If you couldn't already tell by the obvious nametag, my name is Mara Jade and I'm the former Emperor's Hand. Before you ask, that means I was the personal spy/assassin for the late Emperor Palpatine. I served him on many covert missions until his untimely death.
I'm currently on a quest to avenge my Master and hunt down the jerk who killed him. You might know him best as Luke Skywalker, ex-Farmboy, Jedi Knight, and Hero of the Rebellion. I prefer to refer to him as Loser Scumwalker, considering he ruined my life. Anyway, if anyone has any information on his whereabouts I can't promise much in the way of compensation, but I'll put in a good word for you with my boss Talon Karrde. He's on his way to becoming smuggling royalty and could probably fix you up with some neat illegal goods if you're into that sort of thing. Or, alternatively, he's pretty good at trading secrets so if you want to one-up your enemies, he might be your guy. In the meantime I'll be camped out at Karrde's base on Myrkr, restocking on weapons, training to kick Scumwalker's ass, and hanging out with the really weird tree lizards that populate this place. Let me know if you spot any signs of that stupid Jedi anywhere

Did you have a chance to talk to Luke at least?
Mara has no intention of sticking around where she isn't wanted. But, the trouble with having multiple supportive people in your life is that there are so many ways to hurt when they hurt.
Chapter 14 is up.

From a fic I’m not actually writing yet
Talon paused outside the med suite, aware that his heart was beating too fast. Annowirski had warned him that Mara looked better than when she’d been brought in, but not by much. Rolling his shoulders and pulling a well-practiced facade of detached equilibrium around himself, he palmed the door controls and stepped inside.
The outline of Mara’s slender body was lumpy beneath the thin thermal-weave blanket, distorted by the braces and bandages she’d been swathed in between bacta dips. Two of the four ysalamiri Talon kept aboard had been transferred into the room with her, their nutrient frames hanging on equipment hooks mounted to the walls. Mara was eying one of them when he entered, and her gaze swiveled to him.
“Did I do something?” She asked without preamble, her brow furrowing, her voice a croak.
Internally, Talon flinched. He should have guessed what she’d infer.  Externally, he merely shook his head. Rounding the foot of the bed, he moved to untangle one of the IV lines, more for something to do than out of necessity.
“No. Caesura and Foil,” he nodded at the ysalamiri, “are here because of what I did.”
Mara’s blackened eyes narrowed. “Oh?”
Talon cleared his throat. “I may have told Skywalker you didn’t survive.”
Mara said nothing. Watching her out of the corner of his eye, Talon congratulated himself on how completely evenly he’d delivered that news.
After a moment, Mara’s eyes fell half-shut and she tipped her head back against the pillows. “Close enough to the truth, I guess.”
The words were flippant, but there was pain in her expression he knew she would never let anyone else see.
Talon’s heart ached. He owed her an explanation, and suspected it would mean a great deal to her to know the lie had devastated the Jedi Master. But then she coughed, blood flecking her lips, and his guilt turned to stone, blocking off and cutting out everything but the same searing awareness of how close he’d come to losing her that had prompted the problematic lie in the first place.
