a 6 round game of star wars armada. I was commanding a rebel grab bag flying 3 new ships, the mc80, the rebel version of the providence class, and my beloved little mc30, plus admiral akbar on the corvette. I managed to secure a narrow victory against a 6 ship Republic list (those little councilor class ships can pack a punch, especially when there's 3 of them flying around). we also used some of my recently 3d printed obstacles, we had one astroid field and one debris field, and I'll hopefully have a completed set soon
my mc30 was just as amazing as I thought it would be, even if I mispiloted a little. I deployed a little too close, so I had to swing the mc30 wide to the right turn 1 to avoid a collision. I would've wanted it to get to the action sooner and get some better shots in, but having it go wide actually won me the game. I managed to pick off a few small ships early on, but my providence went down turn 3 before getting to activate, and the mc80 went down a few turns later, but it managed to tear into both the victory and acclimator while it was still space worthy. on the last turn, the mc30 swooped behind the acclimator and victory, getting two beautiful close range shots into both of them, taking them both down before evading a hail of fire from the enemy flagship pelta. in the end, had the mc30 had one hull point left, exhausting the last of its defenses to barely hang on, but hang on it did. anakin was no match for akbar, but he put up a good fight. mc30 was definitely the MVP, I want two more of them.

of course, the Executor in its longest dimension (19km) is quite a bit bigger than the Tunguska (8km)
Armada doesn't (didn't?) have a ship with a longest dimension close to 8km
the MC80 Home One-class, is 3.2km (ish) long, its model is in 1/17505 scale
it is the largest Armada ship besides the Executor
so maybe representing the Tunguska in a scale somewhere between that and the one of the Executor (1/30547) would be more appropriate
not to go back to the old hobby horse of miniature scales, but in the webcomic I'm (re)reading (Schlock Mercenary - it's very good) there's a scene where our main characters ship, the Serial Peacemaker, a 100m long Ob'enn dropship, faces up against the Tunguska, a Tricorn class Battleplate - a roughly triangular ship 1km thick, the triangles sides 8km long
and I'm not sure how you would represent that in miniature form
a lot of starship miniatures are in roughly 1/3000 scale,
which would render the Serial Peacemaker, 3.3cm long, perfectly reasonable for tabletop gaming
and the Tunguska, 33cm thick, and 2.7m a side, hmm that could cause some problems
it's this sort of thing that led both SW: Armada and SW: X-Wing to have such flexible scales (Armada ranging between 1/557 and 1/30547, and X-Wing between 1/172 and 1/456)
utterly ridiculous

The MC80 Liberty-class Star Cruiser was a type of capital ship utilized by the Rebel Alliance in their struggle against the Empire. Designed by the amphibious Mon Calamari, each MC80 was slightly different than others as an artistic principle. The MC80 was outfitted with less weaponry than the average Star Destroyer, but their shielding was far superior to many similar craft.

Here are amazing model design shots and in-action shots of Nebula star destroyer, Endurance fleet carriers, MC Mediator battleships, Bothan assault cruisers, MC80 Home One star cruisers, and Republic-class star destroyers in Star Wars: Interregnum.
All the models on these New Republic starships are fantastic and well-detailed.

Also this gifset is reason #1 why massively raised bridge towers make no fucking sense in scifi. Bury the bridge in the ship's center of mass, and Canonhaus would not have died horribly. And actually, you know what? I’m co-opting this post to rant about why the Imperial-class Star Destroyer is literally the worst capital ship design in science fiction.
So, we’ve already mentioned the bridge tower - which was put there out-of-universe because sailing ships in our world have raised conning towers. And that makes sense, because you want the people on the bridge controlling the ship to be able to see farther. That’s 100% not a thing in space - you’re talking about ships traveling at a significant percentage of the speed of light, millions of kilometers from each other most of the time. By the time someone on the bridge would see something that needs avoiding, they’re probably already dead.
Second major flaw with the ISD line: The bridge tower has dedicated shield generators - that’s what those ball things are on the top. Why aren’t there any on the bottom of the ship? I know this doesn’t make sense yet, but let’s look at the diagram for an ISD:
Tumblr media
See that line all the way at the bottom, pointing at the weird bulge on the bottom? What’s that labeled as?
Tumblr media
THAT IS LITERALLY THE MAIN REACTOR OF THE SHIP. HANGING OUT THE BOTTOM. COMPLETELY UNDEFENDED. No dedicated shield generators, no special armor, and ABSOLUTELY NO DEFENSIVE WEAPON PLACEMENTS.
Because here’s my third huge nitpick with the ISD: every single one of its guns is either on the top of the ship, or in that equator area along the edge of the wedge. An ISD literally only has a pair of point-defense laser turrets around its ventral hangar... as its entire ventral weapons compliment.
Now, you know the major difference between planetary ocean-based naval battles and space-based naval battles? Space... has this whole extra dimension you can work with, that whole up/down thing. Every single flaw with the ISD is immediately corrected if you plonk it in the water. Reactor hanging out the bottom? NBD, we probably won’t be attacked from there (except by a submarine) and it’ll help cool the reactor. All the guns are on the top? Well of course they are, who would submerge their guns? Bridge raised up? Good, farther vision for the captain.
But in space? Where things can fly under you and still shoot? The Imperial Star Destroyer is fucking stupid. How the Rebellion was ever scared of these massive wastes of metal, money, and personnel is entirely beyond me, especially after Mon Cala officially joined the Rebellion and brought the MC80 star cruisers into the fight. Just dip under the fucking Star Destroyer and pound its reactor, you idiotic freedom fighters! This should never have posed a threat to anyone.
And the greatest sin of all? The Venator - you know, the immediate predecessor to the ISD line, made by the same company - had a decent ventral weapon compliment (especially the Open Circle variants that had the SPHA-T cannons mounted in the ventral bay) and didn’t have its reactor hanging out the bottom. So either Kuat Drive Yards did a looooot of glitterstim while designing the ISD, or they were secret Rebel sympathizers and were just so subtle that the Rebellion never caught on.

Today I decided to break out the old, and I mean ancient, SLR to take some pics of some of my Armada and X-Wing ships.  I wanted to compare the pictures with my somewhat newer iPhone and see the difference.  For our game nights and for all of the pictures you have seen on this blog, if you haven’t noticed, aren’t exactly professional grade.  The kind of equipment we use, due to the nature of this being a passion rather than job, is less than stellar.  However, that’s what also makes us unique in a fun sort of way.  We truly, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart, desire to build a community; to have this not only be our passion, but have whomever reads involved as well (writing, pictures, etc.).  So I’m going to single-handidly use all of our data on this free web siting host to post high resolutions pictures taken by a complete amateur who has no idea what he’s doing.

The amazing well-made ships in these model sheets: Bothan-assault cruiser, CES Strident-class star defender, MC102 Emancipator-class Heavy Carrier, Rejuvenator-class star destroyer, MC Mediator-class battleship/battlecruiser, MC80 Home One-type star cruiser, Liberator-class carrier/cruiser, Shashore-class frigate, (new Jedi order) MC90 star cruiser, and MC80A star cruiser (I think).
And from what I can tell, the Star Wars empire at war mods that these were made for are... New Jedi Order and Legacy Era.
And I really love how detailed and well-made these models are.
