In 2022: My Chemical Romance performed their 60th show of the 2022-2023 Swarm tour at When We Were Young festival in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA. At this show, Gerard Way wore a red military inspired outfit, and the performance was shown in black and white on the festival screens. "KniVes FOR DAYS" was written on the drums. (🖤)

i love that part of gerard's idea of the masculine during the 2022 tour was the indecipherable red suit-slicked back hair-dramatic stage makeup character he did at wwwy3. and the b&w screen!!! the main theory was that it was a old film star look. which seems right to me. whatever the interpretation, the makeup seals it as a performed look. not just in terms of gender, but entertainment as well. i thought it was an oddball at the time, considering the "halloween costumes" streak that year ... but it still follows the gendered-midcentury-american-figureheads theme. pretty much everything else i can understand what gave him the idea, he's been fixated on vampires and cheerleaders the entire time he's been releasing art. film and stars are also a big part of the band's iconography (james dean was mcr's mascot for the first 2 years) and what he cares about, but it's way more underground. sooo this was such a creative way of exploring the full range of themes he was obvi interested in. i just thought about this for the first time today 2 years later, so there's still stuff to mine about mcr 2022/23. god i love it

A red uniform that’s intended to be perceived on screen one way but when you see it in reality it’s entirely different to what was seen before. Opera played between most of the songs. Ending on Kids From Yesterday, a song that may technically name drop the festival but has always been a song that they play for themselves above all else.

They may have had a more ‘standard’ setlist and show this time, but the performance was still sending a message not at all dissimilar to that of last week: it’s not a band, it’s an idea, but the idea you have of us and the idea you want from us and the idea that exists in reality are three very different things.

this concert experience is the equivalent of playing mcr's discography on shuffle but also you can't decide if you want to listen to a song or not so you keep fast forwarding but also your headphones are that special brand of shitty where you have to hold them at exactly the right angle to hear the music at all
