Reid x Latina!Reader: Going Home
A/N: Hiii! I’m actually from Colombia and I may or may not have made all the Spanish dialogue incredibly Paisa, and I really don’t see enough Latina!Reader x Reid fics, or any POC x Reid fics at all, so I figured I’d write one. This particular fic is about A South American (I didn’t specify country so it’s suitable for all Latinas) reader and Spencer going to visit family at their farmhouse in their home country. I really hope it’s inclusive and you like it. If enough people like it, I’ll write a part two!
TW: Language, Reid being so cute it’s dangerous
*Parche is Colombian slang for group
“Hijoputa! Dios te bendiga..Aja...Mucha mierda..Bueno..okay...chao primita!” You hung up the phone with a sigh. Did you miss your family? Of course. But an hour and a half is a long ass time to be on the phone.
“Baby!” Spencer walked into your living room frazzled, “You’re screaming.”
“Sorry love. Was on the phone.”
He laughed and sat on the couch. “Yes, I gathered. Who was it?”
You joined him on the sofa and snuggled into his chest. Looking up you said, “My cousin Clara. She was begging me to come to the annual family party at our finca. That’s like my family’s--”
“Ranch or farm.” He smiled cockily.
You poked his chest. “Gringito knows things huh?” He beamed.
“Why don’t you go?” he questioned, beginning to caress your dark hair.
“Because you have two weeks off and I want to spend every moment with you? I thought you were smart Spence.”
“Why don’t I go with you? About time I meet your family, don’t you think?”
Your heart instantly flooded with love. This meant so much to you.
“You mean it?”
“Is there a reason I shouldn’t?” He laughed. Your eyes began to roll sideways and you got up, starting for your bedroom.
“Hey, where are you going? And what was that, is-”
“The party is tomorrow baby. Gotta book our flights! And pack! Lots a shit to do mi amor!”
“No come back! What was that look for?” He shouted after you.
After a stressful day of packing, passport nuances, you guys were finally seated in row 3B on a flight to South America.
“This means so much to me.” You said giddy in excitement. In a couple hours, you’d be being served Refajos and tostones by the pool in the paradise that was your home country. Better yet, it’d be with your family, and the love of your life. You took his hand, “Really Spence. Thank you.”
He caressed your hand with his thumb, “Of course.” You shook in excitement again, “Okay, you want the rundown? Who you're meeting, where we’re staying, all of it?”
He smiled at your enthusiasm, “Sure babe.”
“Ah, yay! Okay, so we’re staying at La Finca Y/L/N, it’s owned by my great grandmother and it is 22 acres of fucking paradise. There’s a pool, and a jacuzzi. There’s a river that runs through it, we can take the four wheelers or the horses out and explore! It’s so so beautiful Spence. The view! Oh my god, you can see the mountains, the forest, the village, it’s gorgeous.” You rambled on it’s amenities and all the amazing memories you’d made there during your childhood. Spencer loved seeing you so electrified.
“Now you're gonna meet everybody! Mi mama, my papa, my abuelitos! My tias and tios, which by the way anybody older then you is a tia or tio, anybody within 15 years of your age son tus primos, and anybody younger then you is a nephew or niece. It may not be accurate, but don’t question it.” You gave him an accusatory finger.
“I would never.”
You guys landed and got driven for about 3 hours to the mountains where the finca was. The entire trip, Spencer read four different English to Spanish Dictionaries. Eidetic memories come in handy because by the time you guys were 10 minutes away, he knew every word he’d have to. Pronouncing it correctly was a different story.
As you guys stepped out of the car, servants took your bags, and your Abuelita came out the front door, arms spread open.
“¡Mi palomita!” She shouted and you ran to the front steps, “Abeulita!”
“Como te extrañe mijita.” You guys continued to hug as Spencer slowly walked up. You knew he was nervous, but it didn’t show.
“Abuelita, mi novio, Dr. Spencer Reid.”
She gave you the eyes, “Un doctor?”
“Hola, Dona Elizabeth. You giggled a little at his thick American accent and his describing the house as “guapo”, but mostly you just felt tickled by the butterflies in your stomach. God you loved this man.
“Hola, Spencer. ”
Spencer nodded his head and smiled, “Si.”
“Bueno mis amores, adentro, el *parche te quiere ver.”
As you guys entered the house, the smell of empanadas and lime satiated in your nose, and the sounds of laughing, chatter and Jaunes rang through your ear. You were home.
Clara was the first to notice you and Spencer walking through the door.
She turned around to face your other cousin, “Deverdad! ¡Si no juega James, no me interesa!
Spencer leaned in your ear and whispered, “More annoying than a piece of toast in your bra?” You almost bursted in laughter.
You hugged her tight, your other favorite cousins Oscar and Santi joining in. Spencer let you guys have your moment.
“Guys this is my boyfriend. Spencer.”
“Hola.” He chirped.
“Don’t worry, you're off the hook here man.” said your cousin Santi, “We speak English.” Spencer sighed a breath of relief and you all sat down at the kitchen counter.
“Where are your parents, my tias and tios? Yo, where are MY parents?”
“They went with the kids to Pance for the day. They’ll be back for the party tonight though.”
“Pance’s a whitewater river about an hour away Spence.”
“I know. The river Pance actually has some historical significance in the South American struggle from independence to Spain.” You smiled. His random knowledge was too cute.
“Live in Miami, born here. Where you from Spencer?” your cousin Santi passed you both beers.
“Grew up in Vegas.”
“Ah, that’s where I’m trying to go man!” Oscar laughed.
“With your shitty poker habits?” Clara retorted.
You guys all laughed and talked for hours, all of your cousins starting to like Spencer just as much as you knew they would.

An Analysis on the Ethnic Coding of Petra [Fire Emblem Three Houses]
So Fire Emblem Three Houses is officially one month old now and since that time, I’ve been taking notes on anything Petra, Brigid, Shamir or Dagda related on most of my playthroughs because I’m genuinely curious as to what their real world counterparts are meant to be. And finally I have come to the conclusion that the countries of Brigid and Dagda are based off pre-Columbian Caribbean/Latin America making it plausible to conclude that both Petra and Shamir are Indigenous Latina coded!! Below the cut I have compiled all the references I noticed either from research or just from personal knowledge of mine because I thought some of y’all would interested in this since it hasn’t been talked about as far as I know.
(BEWARE OF MINOR SPOILERS)
First thing’s first, I wanted to point out that although the Adrestrian Empire is heavily based off Germany, it also has Iberian themes (most notably names (see Mercedes and Manuela) and geography.) This connects with the fact that Adrestria is the only known country in Fódlan to have had direct contact with Brigid/Dagda so in the real world, this would be Spanish/Portuguese contact with the Caribbean/Latin America
Attire
Pre-timeskip, Petra’s design doesn’t speak much about her homeland. She wears a standard uniform where the only notable difference between her and the other students are her tan complexion, braided hair and of course, her iconic tattoo on her cheek. Post-timeskip, however, we get much more insight on what Brigid culture is like since she does explain that sometime during the five years Byleth was gone, she returned to Brigid. (albeit, for a short amount of time) This is where we finally get a good taste of Brigid culture and makes it way easier to point out the references between her attire and the real world inspirations it takes.
[just a disclaimer, but none of Petra’s canon classes (Thief, Assassin and Wyvern Rider) really incorporate its way into her war attire with the exception of the one legged leggings and garter from the generic female thief outfit]
Tumblr media
From my personal knowledge on the topic, I noticed that Petra’s outfit takes a lot of inspiration from the Kuna people of Panama and Colombia, most notably her jewelry, the patterns and the colour palette.
Tumblr media
[most Incan armour were made out of metals and her shoulder guard/chest plate seem to be made out of leather (noted by the seams/colour) so in the image above I was mainly pointing out the theme of fringe/tassels]
The persistent theme of gold accessories in her outfit is reminiscent of many different ancient Latin American civilizations valuing gold so much.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beliefs
Petra establishes early on that she doesn’t really believe in the Church of Seiros (same for Shamir) and instead explains in Brigid, they believe every living thing has a spirit within. In her C-Support with Byleth, she explains the origin of her tattoo as a prayer to the forest spirits to protect her.
Tumblr media
In many Latin American/Caribbean cultures, there are forest spirits referred to as duendes and are to help guide lost people out of the forest.
Tumblr media
Once Byleth’s hair changes colour, Petra acknowledges it and gives insight on more of Brigid’s spiritual beliefs.
Tumblr media
Hair is very sacred in many Indigenous cultures. It’s believed that if your hair were to change colours naturally, you were enlightened by a god which coincides well with Petra’s reaction to Byleth’s new appearance.
Tumblr media
Geography
Brigid is an archipelago with a tropical climate and is located to the southwest of Fódlan (Europe) so it should go without saying much that the location of Brigid is based off the West Indies/Caribbean and Central America.
However something that should be noted is that Brigid and Dagda are very closely tied together, sharing parts of their cultures. Dagda’s real world counterpart is very vague to say the least since Shamir doesn’t share much about it but going off the in-game description of a tomato and a paragraph from one of the books in the library, it’s safe to say that Dagda is most likely supposed to be South America.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
- - -
And that’s that on that! I’m sure there’s many things that I’ve missed (such as the significance of Petra’s braids, more on spirits that Petra mentions, Shamir’s animal bone dice, etc.) but for now that’s all I can gather accurate information on. Maybe in the future I will make some edits to this but for now I’m satisfied with the result.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk!!

I know this girl that is genuinely convinced she is PoC just because she is kinda tanned and because she has very dark hair, eyes, etc. She calls herself "latina" and she even thinks of herself as a racialized one and I'm like... you are white and Spanish, girl. Like European from Spain. Like white with white ass parents and even whiter grandparents. Just because two or three have asked you if you are Latina:
A) doesn't mean you are.
B) you are certainly Hispanic but NOT Latina.
C) Literally no fucking body has ever or will ever discriminate you. Ever. Because you are a WHITE European citizen.
D) there are white latinos and when we face discrimination of any kind it is NOT the same as what brown, native and black latinos suffer. PoC latinos always have it much worse, both outside and inside Latina America. And you dare compare to them in terms of oppression? Bad enough that white latinxs do it, so honestly fuck off.
E) you dare tell me, an actual latina, that you face more discrimination than me just because I am white and I don't have an accent in public? Because babe, let me remind you that I am an inmigrant (which you aren't, matter of fact you are more Spanish than fucking tortilla de patatas) and that the very second I tell someone I am from Colombia I get the Pablo Escobar joke which I am sick off and you -yes miss "I am latina" girl) frequently make :) and my neighbors used to think my family were dealers just because where we are from :) and people comment on how latinos "steal" their jobs :) and I could go on but I'm tired.
I truly can't understand how some people can be so fed up with their own privilege. I AM privileged, and I can recognize it and will never deny it, but this girl, who has it objectively easier than me (even if I am very privileged) has this such narrow perspective and such an urge to feel "different" well guess what oppression is not fun.

Tumblr media
Protecting from Scams
As mentioned above, member safety is the number one priority for AmoLatina, and this is why they have put a very sophisticated scam prevention system in place. Below are some ways how AmoLatina fights to keep you safe:
1. Strict Profile Verification Policy
There’s always a risk that someone might create a fake profile and try to scam you. To prevent that, AmoLatina applies a strict profile verification policy to all members. If a new user refuser to comply with verification or doesn’t pass the verification process, their application will be rejected.
AmoLatina also uses an anti-fraud system that scans all existing profiles and alerts the customer support team if it detects a suspicious profile. The customer team also investigates reports of abuse sent in by other members who are suspecting someone is trying to scam them. Upon receiving notifications of suspicious profiles, the security team checks each incident and deletes and bans offending profiles.
2. Tackling the Issues of Fake Photos
It’s not uncommon that people may try to misrepresent themselves by using fake photos. To tackle the risk of fake pictures AmoLatina’s security team conducts personal interviews or video calls with potential members. They also check personal identification documents to verify all information. If the member doesn’t pass the process, they will not be able to join the site.
There are a few things you can do yourself to avoid romance scams and confirm the identity of your online love interest:
Set up a video call to see them in real life
Use the phone call service to hear them speak
3. 100% Credit-Back Guarantee
AmoLatina works around the clock to offer you a safe dating experience. However, losing money due to an online scam is still a real risk. If you have been scammed and the customer support team has proved it, AmoLatina will reimburse all the credits you used when communicating with the faker.
Website Usage
Generally speaking, the website is very easy to use. Most features are simply one click away. On your right-hand side, you’ll see the different messages in your chat box. You’ll also see your contacts and chat requests from other members.
From the main page, you can move to, search, inbox and upgrade easily. You’ll find these buttons at the very top of the page. You also have the option to state your mood by clicking on “Today I am.” Choose from different predetermined moods:
Serious
Penpal
Romantic
Flirty
Naughty
Yes, the options are a bit limited, but it’s a fun way to show passersby how you’re feeling during the day. The “Today I am” feature can still be improved though.
Regarding matches, the site brings you suggestions through a small box pop-up. Every time the site finds a good match for you, or if someone is interested in chatting with you, your computer’s going to make a sound. If the person on the small pop-up box interests you, all you have to do is click on “Reply.”
Overall Experience with the Customer Service
Overall, AmoLatina.com is a Latin dating site that everyone should try. The exclusive features and services that this Colombian dating site offers are advantageous to online Latin dating. On top of that, the Privacy Policy is clear, and the site does have a rule for reimbursement if a member has been scammed by another member misrepresenting him or herself.
In a nutshell, here are the PROS and CONS that we have discovered:
PROS
Easy sign-up
Very user-friendly website
A good number of existing members from all over South America

The Problem of America Chavez
Recently a friend of mine sent me a really excited Facebook Message about how she just discovered this great Latina superhero (she's not into comics) and talked about America Chavez and I once again, sighed, because America Chavez is such a fucking problem because she is NOT. LATINA. Where is she from? Mexico? Puerto Rico? Panama? Argentina? Colombia? No, she's from the Utopian Parallel as created by Billy Kaplan. Where are her mothers from? No one knows, unless I missed the issue where they talk about how they left the DR or Cuba in search of a better life (which admittedly I may have, so). America Chavez is brown and has a Spanish last name so she must be Latina and that's about as offensive as saying that a character named America Cheng has black hair and an Asian last name so she must be from Asia. As if Asia is a single monolith culture. Latin America is big. It's diverse. The culture of Mexico and the culture of Cuba have very little to do with each other and the only thing that separates them is some water. To say that a character is Latina doesn't mean shit unless you have a specific country backing that shit up. If Marvel had said "America Chavez was raised in the Utopian Parallel but she was born in Guatemala to parents from Guatemala" I could get behind that, but they didn't, so this is cheap diversity with no teeth and no one is talking about it because ultimately it doesn't say anything. It's just a brown character from nowhere with no culture that white comic fans can read and get behind because they think that all of Latin America is the same. We all speak Spanish, after all, right?

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira Restore Sparkle to Super Bowl Halftime
On the surface, the Super Bowl halftime show by Jennifer Lopez and Shakira was a party: exultant voices, shaking hips in glittery costumes, irresistible global rhythms. They danced and belted through a quick-cutting megamix of their hits, sweetly and determinedly uniting flirtatious sexiness with sheer mastery of rhythm, melody and motion.
Yet the halftime show was also a no-nonsense affirmation of Latin pride and cultural diversity in a political climate where immigrants and American Latinos have been widely demonized. The explosive final segment began with Lopez’s daughter, Emme Maribel Muñiz, and a choir of children — some of them in lighted cages — singing Lopez’s “Let’s Get Loud” and a snippet of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born in the U.S.A.,” as Lopez appeared wrapped in a feathered American flag cape that reversed to a Puerto Rican flag. It looked like recognition for both Puerto Rico and for the Dreamers, the American-born children of undocumented immigrants.
Shakira and Lopez were Latina superwomen, smiling pop conquistadoras backed by phalanxes of dancers. They sang, shimmied and thoroughly outshone the brief appearances by their guests, both reggaeton stars: Bad Bunny, from Puerto Rico, and J Balvin, from Colombia.
Both Shakira, on her 43d birthday, and Lopez, 50, are multicultural success stories. Lopez was born in the Bronx but has reveled in her Puerto Rican roots, recording hits in Spanish and English while also thriving as an actress and a producer. (Her film and television company is pointedly named Nuyorican Productions.) Shakira made her way from Colombia to international pop stardom, drawing on globally assorted sources — the Americas, Africa, Europe and (flaunting her Lebanese ancestry) the Middle East — for songs about passion and uplift.
Both of them sing most often about romance and desire; both of them use songs and videos to insist that even with stardom, they are still just “Jenny From the Block” or a Colombian girl-next-door who dances barefoot in the street. Both are also among pop’s most savvy beat-seekers, finding and combining rhythms old and new — merengue, rumba, cumbia, samba, paseo, rock, disco, hip-house, reggaeton — to keep fans dancing now.
In some ways it was a no-brainer to book two multimillion-selling Latinas for a halftime show in Miami, where the city’s population is 70 percent Hispanic. It was also a kind of truce.
Lopez and Shakira performed a year after many musicians spurned the N.F.L. over its treatment of Colin Kaepernick, the quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers who protested racism by kneeling during the pregame national anthem and was not signed to a team afterward. Last year, Jay-Z’s entertainment company, Roc Nation, entered a partnership with the N.F.L., including advising on performers for the halftime show, and joined the N.F.L.’s social justice initiative, Inspire Change, which this year included a Super Bowl spot about a police shooting. Shakira is a Roc Nation client; Lopez is not. But booking them steered the halftime show away from black-and-white racial tensions and toward the joys of motion and seduction.
The N.F.L.’s pregame publicity had announced that there would be more songs than in any previous halftime show — but not more time than the allotted 12 minutes. With two headliners, that meant cramming a whole career into six minutes: more like greatest hooks than greatest hits.
The upside was that each segment — Shakira first, then Lopez, then together — was a kaleidoscope of rhythms, a demonstration of how much Latin (and Afro-Latin) music has contributed to American pop. The downside was that individual songs barely registered, though Shakira let herself linger over two of her best blockbusters: “Whenever, Wherever” and “Hips Don’t Lie.” She showed off the interconnections of Latin music by turning “Chantaje,” a reggaeton song, into an old-school rumba and pushing “Hips Don’t Lie” toward samba; she dared to crowd-surf without missing a cue. She also invoked Arabic and later African rhythms, unwilling to confine herself to one hemisphere.
Lopez placed herself as a New Yorker from the start, arriving on a skyscraper spire to sing “Jenny From the Block” and working through strenuous dance routines and wearing skintight leather and then even less. She perched on a pole, probably to remind fans of her role in “Hustlers” (for which she was snubbed by the Oscars); she did a slide on her knees that rivaled Bruce Springsteen’s stunt in 2009; she flaunted her famous rump. Lopez leaned on the dance-club part of her catalog of hits — a reminder that disco, too, has Latin roots.
And “Let’s Get Loud” — mingled with Shakira’s “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa),” some Congolese guitar and some New York mambo — reached out to a wider world and more serious concerns than a one-night party. This halftime show was euphoria with a purpose.

Me enorgullece.

Rolando Salvatierra Combina Socio Senior [email protected]

Electricity interconnection, a step to be taken to increase demand for electricity
Dr. Rolando Salvatierra Combina Senior Partner, Electricity, Project Finance and Syndication Specialist
Legal and technical conditions exist to promote electricity interconnection with other countries in the region, which may allow increasing demand for electricity while fostering the sustainable growth of the electricity sector.
“Serious studies on electricity interconnection have been carried out by top-level technical teams in the past. Some recent studies include those conducted by CAF -Development Bank of Latin America and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile’s Department of Electric Power”
Peru is a privileged country as there are many different energy sources which can be used to generate electricity, like: i) hydroelectric power sources, the potential of which has been exploited so far by only 20%; ii) thermal power sources, particularly natural gas; and iii) renewable power sources like wind, solar, geothermal and biomass energy, which allow the country to properly plan its power grid and promote the exploitation of the above sources by private investors. However, domestic demand for power speaked in 2016 and, as a result, there has been an energy surplus and prices have dropped.
This new scenario should make us realize that we must increase demand for electricity in the next few years, electricity interconnection with neighboring countries being the best option available to increase demand significantly, at higher prices than those paid on the domestic market. Serious studies on electricity interconnection have been carried out by top-level technical teams in the past. Some recent studies include those conducted by CAF - Development Bank of Latin America and the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile Department of Electric Power, which conclude that electricity interconnection, actually has the potential to succeed. What’s missing then to transform this potential into practice?
We believe that what we are missing is: i) political willingness to have agreements reached as soon as possible between interested investors and companies in Chile, Brazil and Colombia, defining forthwith the guidelines needed in order for regional interconnection to materialize; and ii) the external and internal legal mechanisms needed in order for this decision to materialize, clearly defining the rules of the game which will regulate interconnection, delivery, export and import of electricity, along with the role to be played by the private sector and the State in this interconnection effort.
We believe that interconnection is our future as far as electricity is concerned.
“Peru is a privileged country as there are many different energy sources which can be used to generate electricity, like: i) hydroelectric power sources, the potential of which has been exploited so far by only 20%; ii) thermal power sources, particularly natural gas; and iii) renewable power sources like Aeolian, solar, geothermal and biomass energy, which allow the country to properly plan its power grid and promote the exploitation of the above sources by private investors”
