Rear Sekai opening movie, 15-second commercial

Publisher Bushiroad Games and developer HAKAMA have released the opening movie and a 15-second commercial for action RPG Rear Sekai, which will launch for Switch on October 12 in Japan.

About

The protagonist visits Ellentaros, a town at the furthest end of Melvania, where they interact with its unique residents and set out on an adventure in search of what can be done for them. Characters

Hajime (voiced by Masaaki Mizunaka) – An alchemist. Due to the nature of his work, he is quite familiar with the natural sciences. He reads a lot of books and possesses a wealth of knowledge. He lives with his older sister.

Chitta (voiced by Sayumi Suzushiro) – A bow user and elf. She lives with an uncle and demi-human who lost their parents. She is calm and ladylike. Even in thought, she can be unique and somewhat leisurely.

Looks great, and story is interesting so looking forward to see this. Cast is nice, Kobayashi Chiaki, Uchiyama Kouki and Nakamura Shuugo. OP and ED sounds promising.

ツルネ ―つながりの一射―/Tsurune: Tsunagari no Issh/Tsurune - The Linking Shot -

Tsurune is such beautiful anime series, and love the characters and can't wait to see new characters in 2nd season, especially Fujiwara, Onogi, Nikaidou and Aragaki. Cast is great and new additions is amazing. So happy that Tsurune got 2nd season and it's calming to see kyuudou.

Idols and androids. Recent PV looked so amazing, very excited to see this, and hear all the music. Cast is great; Furukawa Makoto, Enoki, Kajiwara. Bands look very nice, especially STAND-ALONE and KNoCC.

This looks so amazing, and can't wait to see this. The characters are interesting and cast is so nice, Umehara and Takeuchi once again together in same anime. Especially Umehara's character Yuuen Usui is so handsome. So expect to spam his pictures everywhere.

Curious to see this, and Umehara in the cast. Story seems interesting, training spies.

Story and theme is rather different than usual, it's about jazz players and hear saxophone is always nice. PV looked great, and curious to see this movie.

Gang Members Gather in Tokyo Revengers TV Anime Trailer

  Rival gangs are going to rumble, because a new trailer, a new key visual, and the OP theme song performer have been revealed for Tokyo Revengers, an upcoming TV anime based on the time-slip drama manga by Ken Wakui about a directionless young man who gets a second chance at life after his former girlfriend is murdered by the toughest gang in Tokyo. The new cast members include:

    Yoshitsugu Matsuoka as Takashi Mitsuya.

  Takemichi Hanagaki is a freelancer that's reached the absolute pits of despair in his life. He finds out that the only girlfriend he ever had in his life that he dated in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, had been killed by the ruthless Tokyo Manji Gang. The day after hearing about her death, he's standing on the station platform and ends up being pushed over onto the tracks by a herd of people. He closes his eyes thinking he's about to die, but when he opens his eyes back up, he somehow had gone back in time 12 years. Now that he's back living the best days of his life, Takemichi decides to get revenge on his life by saving his girlfriend and changing himself that he'd been running away from.

    The Tokyo Revengers TV anime is directed by Kouichi Hatsumi and features animation production by Liden Films. The series will broadcast in Japan beginning on April 10, 2021, and it will also stream on Crunchyroll as part of the Spring 2021 simulcast lineup.

Samuel Beckett and replacing the human:Krapp’s Last Tape.

Tape recorders seems retro now and I am certain that those of you born post 2006 will fail to recognise the name. But, this is the kind of technology that is the star of Samuel Beckett’s Krapp’s Last Tape.

The play is a complex one, there is no room to doze off as concentration is required. As stated, technology is the star. But Beckett uses other devices to enhance the recorder, Krapp listens to the tapes in darkness in an effort to restore his memory,

directly above is a light that he installed at age 39 to make him feel less alone.

As Beckett has recorded in his production notebook, “Krapp’s consuming lifelong struggle has been to reconcile spirit and flesh, symbolically the light and dark sides of his nature.” (pp.64-66.) The physical representation of this the light/dark imagery suggest concerns with bodily purity and corruption that enables the process of replacing the human to begin.

Reclaiming his memory is Krapp’s weakness, although to us the tapes just seem like an analogy for memory; the technology used enables the absurdity of life to be seen in contrast to the technologically perfect record given to us by the tapes. The ability to change how the dialogue is listened to; “Pause… hesitates” (p.62.) Rewinding the tape and starting over, gives us a new perspective on the technologized voice.

This technologized voice is further brought to life with Krapp’s unique relationship with the tape recorder. Beckett chooses to portray this through the use of ritual, no not the song by Rita Ora but by a series of actions that are performed in a certain way. One ritual that is less obvious is Krapp’s mirroring of his former self; “Brief laugh in which Krapp joins” (p.58.) The repetitious laughing emphasises the longing to go back to the past and his desire to find the other as Kathrine Hayles puts it; “To perform them is always in some sense to accept them… they sediment into habitual actions and movements, sinking below conscious awareness.” (P.204) The line “Be again, be again” (p.63) further emphasise this, the repeated repetition indicates that he wants to be there in that moment. But if his memory is inadequate and the next best thing is for him to hear his younger self reliving it, then he shall do so through the tape recorder.

But by doing this he is subconsciously creating what Catharina Wulf calls a “Psychological impasse.”(p.87) the tape recorder is key to the reliving and retelling of Krapp’s memories, the technological aspect removes the unreliability of human memory, allowing Krapp to immerse himself. The machine holds power and has the potential to pose as a dangerous mediator between Krapp and his past. Thus, his strained relationship with his unresolved memories trap Krapp until he is incapable of separating himself from them, human and machine becomes inseparable, and the replacing of his human mind can begin.

The entire play is a journey through which we see Krapp transform. Beckett through the use of this piece of technology shows the human transitioning from scene to scene until he becomes a fully technological subject by the end of the final act; “Krapp motionless staring before him. The Tape runs on in silence.” (P.63) It is clear the entire play is governed by this tape recorder, and as Alex Goody succinctly puts it, Krapp’s “fallible body is erased by the mediation of the machine”. (p.157.)

Krapp turns from this fluid speaker into a mechanised body, he can no longer ‘come back into the light” (p.59) in my opinion by Beckett creating s play that is solely reliant on one piece of technology he is warning us of the dangers. This a paradox that Krapp is unable to overcome but how long until this affects the rest of humanity?

Adding Read Replicas in a Production Ruby on Rails System with Zero Downtime Using Makara

When query, schema and index optimizations aren’t enough to support the load of a high throughput database system, fundamental changes in how data flows through that system are often necessary.

Over the past few years, our team at Contactually has been fortunate enough to tackle numerous database performance issues, ranging from autovacuum tuning to full production database upgrades. Growth as a company doesn’t occur without these types of issues and we’re happy to share our experiences with our peers.

Why Splitting Your Read/Write Queries is Necessary

Load balancing is a fundamental concept in any system design. It’s important to design your data systems to handle the peaks or spikes in usage, as opposed to designing to handle the average load a system experience.

By splitting queries between your primary and follower databases, you’re able to ensure that users interacting with your web application have a snappy and performant experience, while saving heavy background jobs for a follower.

How We Researched Potential Solutions

There are a few options when it comes to choosing a database adapter that supports primary/follower query balancing. After evaluating Makara and octopus, we decided to go with Makara for the following reasons:

Thread-safety: we use Sidekiq for our background job processing, so a non-thread-safe database adapter was a deal-breaker.

Community support / used in large production environments. We read about a few companies experience using Makara, namely Instacart.

In our research, we discovered a gem called distribute_reads (made by Instacart), that sealed the deal for us. It also fed directly into our ideal incremental release strategy.

Plan a Detailed Roll Out Strategy

Given the importance of a highly available database, we had to be very careful in how we rolled out these changes to production. The key take aways were to:

Implement a Kill Switch

Use a database config that could easily be reverted using ENV[‘USE_MAKARA’] in case we quickly needed to roll back our changes and use the default postgresql adapter.

We ran into an issue with our first deployment where we needed to immediately roll back. Users’ access to Contactually was unaffected and we were able to quickly address the problem and re-deploy. You can see some more suggestions from this gist here.

Start Slow — Pick a Non-Critical Job

Pick a non-critical, background job to introduce distribute_reads on. We picked our job that generate merge suggestions for our users. If the jobs failed for whatever reason, we could roll back, and just run them again.

distribute_reads do # your regular application logic end

If the Makara adapter is being used, reads will be distributed throughout the pool of slaves. If it’s not, for whatever reason, distribute_reads will gracefully use the default postgresql adapter.

Monitoring is Key

Ensure you have proper monitoring in place. We use NewRelic and Amazon RDS metrics to see the effect of our changes. If you can’t monitor results, you have no way of knowing how effective your changes were.

Effective monitoring helped us quickly (within seconds) determine that our initial rollout had an issue that needed to be quickly fixed.

Warm Your Follower Database’s Cache

If you’re introducing a follower database that has never been used or queried before, it’s important to make sure the database is warmed up before hitting it with lots of complex queries.

Just like a car in cold weather, you wouldn’t want to start your engine and slam on the gas before the engine has had a chance to warm up.

If the follower instances were recently created, initiate simple count queries for your most recently active users to warm both the database and operating system level caches. For more information, check out pg_prewarm.

Results — Huge Success!

Results so far have been a staggering improvement in system-wide database performance improvement. We saw a ~30% decrease in time spent in the database for our web-initiated queries and an almost total elimination of spikes in Queue Depth.

I’ll just pray that he’ll do well as Kazuma-san ‘cause I’m unfortunately expecting a lot. I love that shit, man. And ShiraYuu’s gonna make him work for sure.
