head canon:

I don’t know if this is a headcanon, an observation or a preferred reading but I think Io is actually confident in himself despite how seemingly self-depreciating he was in his fight with Ryuu. Or more specifically, he’s confident in his abilities. He knows he knows how to use his intellect to be mature and he knows he’s amounted to a lot for someone his age financially and knows how outstanding his grades and resumé are. But on the other hand, maybe he doesn’t think much of himself as a person. He doesn’t trust easily, he’s not very inclined socially, he doesn’t understand many teenage things. 

And I’m projecting right now but I think that maybe since Io’s so intelligent, he’s also been pretty aware of his personal qualities since he was kinda young and just learned to hide and maybe ignore his insecurities, lulling in what good he knew he could show to the outside world, until he met Ryuu. And now of course I’m not saying Ryuu would be a negative influence but he just seems to have all the qualities Io admires but doesn’t have, and that makes Io feel inadequate. 

But anyway, I’ve been saying it in tags and maybe direct messages ever since the Ioryuu lovers’ quarrel but I think it was, on Io’s part, more about lifting Ryuu on a pedestal than putting himself down. That too, to some extent, but mostly I think Io appreciates his abilities, he just thinks Ryuu is so much BETTER and it’s beautiful but also kinda sad.
