Machine Embroidery Using Thermogaze Fabric (samples 1 &2)

These samples were created to explore the internal structures of leaves through stitch and fabric manipulation. Using thermogaze as a temporary support layer, I experimented with machine embroidery to recreate the delicate vein patterns found in nature.

To begin, I hand-drew the internal filament structure of a leaf on tracing paper. This pattern was then transferred onto thermogaze fabric and layered with a base fabric—cotton for Sample 1, and muslin for Sample 2. I secured each sandwich with an embroidery hoop and used a sewing machine to stitch the pattern, carefully joining both layers.

Once the stitching was complete, I cut out the fabric between the stitched “veins” to emulate the negative space inside a leaf’s skeleton. The samples were then pressed under heat for 10 seconds, causing the thermogaze to peel away and leaving behind an intricate network of stitches still connected to the base fabric.

Both samples achieved the intended effect of creating light, skeletal structures through embroidery. Sample 2, made with muslin, was especially successful. The delicacy of the weave enhanced the ethereal, airy quality of the final piece and allowed the threadwork to take visual precedence.

Sample 1, using cotton, presented challenges. The open spaces between stitched areas were too wide, which made the sample resemble two connected fabrics rather than one cohesive structure. In some areas, I also used polyester thread, which slightly disrupted the natural, organic look I was aiming for.

Moving forward, I plan to avoid thermogaze on fragile fabrics, as the heat press may damage them. I am interested in exploring aqua film as an alternative stabiliser and aim to refine the stitching pattern to maintain a better sense of cohesion and continuity between thread and fabric.

This exercise continues my investigation into botanical structures and material fragility. The stitched networks not only emulate natural forms but speak to themes of exposure, delicacy, and inner frameworks—both in leaves and in ourselves.

Being inspired means spotting a colour palette that makes your heart do a little jig. Or thinking, “Ooh, I’d never have used stitches that way!” and then taking that spark and running off in your own deliciously weird direction with it.

Creative borrowing is a time-honoured tradition—but it only works if you transform, reinterpret, or add something new. You’re not a photocopier. You’re a maker. A thinker. A glorious, glitter-shedding magpie of ideas.

So yes, look at artists. Research them. Pin them to your mood boards and mutter “genius” under your breath. But when it comes time to create? Make it yours.

Because honestly, the world doesn’t need another [Insert Famous Artist] knockoff. But it could really use what you have to say.
