Final Sample #1
Embroidery Final Sample - Sample 3
Figure 1: Embroidery Sample 3 – Stitching and Appliqués in Cyanotype-printed hessian
Tumblr media
In this final embroidery sample, I stitched directly over the cyanotype image previously developed on hessian. The design followed the natural structure of the leaf skeleton motif established in earlier samples. Using a blend of cotton, wool, and silk threads in blues, off-whites, and gold, I carefully outlined each form. For the reverse appliqués, I incorporated off-white cotton mesh—some of it already tinted with cyanotype pigment—layered into the cut-out sections of the hessian. These were delicately stitched with machine couching. The sample also includes hand embroidery, such as French knots and small gold bead details, creating texture and dimensional contrast.
Figure 2. Detail view of layered stitching and mesh work

This work reflects a key moment in my design development. It represents both a refinement of my technical process and an affirmation of my creative identity. One of the most powerful choices was allowing the embroidery to remain slightly irregular and expressive. The stitching is not mechanical or perfectly uniform; instead, it embraces a handcrafted, organic quality. I consider this “imperfect” aesthetic a strength—it reflects my personal values of honesty, vulnerability and artisanal integrity.
Working with such a coarse, rustic fabric like hessian is technically challenging, and its fraying nature amplifies the visual tension between strength and fragility. Yet, this contrast echoes the duality at the core of my narrative: the delicate resilience of women who support and nourish, like the veins of a leaf sustaining life.
One of the main strengths of this sample is its aesthetic impact. The stitched lines follow the organic flow of the leaf skeleton, creating a harmonious composition with strong visual rhythm. The open areas, both cut and layered, allow light to pass through, enhancing the tactile and visual interest of the piece. The combination of natural and metallic threads evokes a contrast between the earthy and the ethereal—closely linked to the conceptual narrative of feminine liberation and fragility transformed into resilience.
A lighter hessian background could increase visual contrast and enhance the cyanotype detail, but for this piece, the darker tones ground the stitching and give weight to the message. It creates a rich depth, allowing the lighter threads and mesh to emerge with quiet luminosity.
Moving forward, I aim to explore different shades of hessian or use bleached varieties for greater versatility. I also plan to continue researching artists who work with hessian and natural dyes, expanding my understanding of how to merge sustainable materials with poetic visual storytelling.
This sample draws subtle inspiration from the architectural work of Zaha Hadid. Her use of repetition and fluid forms influenced how I approached movement, texture, and space within the embroidery, especially the way open areas create rhythm and lightness.
The stitched shapes resemble organic growth, like veins in leaves or natural terrain, connecting back to my core narrative of the woman as life-giver, fragile yet powerful. This analogy is reflected in the deliberate piercing of the hessian and the lightness that shines through.

A delicate dance of form and flow.
This minimal charcoal artwork portrays a woman and her feline familiar moving forward—graceful, mysterious, and undefined. Their slender silhouettes are etched in sweeping, deliberate strokes, suspended in a dreamscape of soft shadows and hushed color. Hints of midnight blue whisper around the charcoal, offering depth to the minimalist composition.
It’s not just what’s seen—it’s what’s becoming.
This image speaks to the quiet strength of beginnings, the grace of imperfection, and the beauty of process. A gentle exploration of femininity, companionship, and the fluidity of creation.
Let your mind wander with them.
