“Meat Man”
Performed by Jerry Lee Lewis and written by Mack Vickery. A two-minute, fifty-second ode to... well, I guess it’s always open to interpretation, isn’t it? But, tell me, just what else could “licked the fuzz off a Georgia Peach” mean?

Johnny & The Hurricanes - pioneers of the rock instrumental and the guys who paved the way for surf guitar of the sixties.
Johnny And The Hurricanes began in 1957 as The Orbits in Toledo, Ohio. Led by their saxophonist Johnny Paris (born John Pocisk, 1940, Walbridge, Ohio - died 1 May 2006, Ann Arbor, Michigan), they were a group of school friends who played on a few recordings behind local rockabilly singer Mack Vickery.
They signed up with managers Harry Balk and Irving Micahnik of Twirl Records (seen in the last picture with rock icon Del Shannon). This led to national engagements and in 1959 they released Crossfire. This had been recorded in a disused cinema (to provide echo) and was a national hit, reaching No 23 in the U.S. charts in the summer of 1959. The follow up single Red River Rock became their biggest hit ever. An instrumental version of Red River Valley on Warwick Records, it featured Paul Tesluk on Hammond organ and was a Top Ten hit on both sides of the Atlantic (No 5 in the U.S., No 3 in the UK) and sold over a million copies.
The other members of the band at that time were Dave Yorko (guitar), Butch Mattice (bass) and Bill “Little Bo” Savich (drums). The group continued with their gimmich of reworking old tunes with a rock and roll beat.
In 1960, the United States Army bugle call Reveille became the riotous Reveille Rock, while Blue Tail Fly was turned into Beatnik Fly - both tunes made the Top 40. For Down Yonder they switched to Big Top Records. Still in 1960, When The Saints Go Marching In became Revival but only managed one week in the charts, peaking at No 97. That track fared better in the UK as the B-side of Rocking Goose which reached No 3 in their chart. The band meanwhile developed a strong following in Europe. In 1962, they played a show at the Star-Club in Hamburg where a little known British group called The Beatles was a support act. Johnny And The Hurricanes continued to record with decreasing success until 1965.
In 1967, as the hippie era came into full swing, the group recorded Red River Rock ‘67 to update their biggest hit with a psychedelic ethos, but to no avail. Culture and fashion moved so fast back then that they were already the unwanted playthings of a previous generation.
Johnny Paris moved out of the music industry as a full-time occupation, selling both antiques and vending machines in Toledo. Although he was by then the only original member of the Hurricanes remaining (he later claimed to be able to recall over 300 musicians who had at one time or another been in the band), they toured Europe from time to time as a nostalgia novelty act with an ever-changing line-up, until shortly before his death in 2006. The band inspired the song Johnny And The Hurricanes on the album How I Learned To Love The Bootboys by the band The Auteurs.

DEVILDRIVER - Dalpremier a pénteken érkező country-metal albumról: Copperhead Road - http://metalindex.hu/2018/07/03/devildriver-dalpremier-a-penteken-erkezo-country-metal-albumrol-copperhead-road/ -
Outlaws ‘Til The End címmel pénteken jelenik meg a Dez Fafara vezette DevilDriver új albuma, csupa metalosított country-feldolgozással.

Ezek a srácok folyton ilyen zenéket hallgattak a turnébuszon. Ha nem Willie Nelson szólt, akkor Johnny Cash és az ilyenek… A zene mellett a szövegekbe is beleszerettem, annyira kib…ottul valóságosak voltak… A blues-nak és az outlaw country-nak köszönhetjük a rock’n’rollt. Ez még jóval megelőzte a rock’n’rollt is… és a fejemben mindig is nagyon súlyos formában hallottam ezeket a dalokat.”

“Alabama Women's Prison Blues”
By Mack Vickery. He’s one of my favorite “characters” in country music history. He started off as another guy reaching for Elvis’ brass ring and wrote a passel of country hits for everyone from Waylon Jennings (”Cedartown, Georgia) to Johnny Paycheck (”I’m The Only Hell (Mama Ever Raised)”). He’s probably most well-known for being Jerry Lee Lewis’ greatest muse apart from Otis Blackwell.
This was recorded in an actual women’s prison, the Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women in Alabama. A side note, the prison was ranked one of the 10 worst in the country thanks to investigative reporting by Mother Jones. The state promised to enact reforms, even promising to close the prison in 2016 until repairs were made and reforms were enacted. However, at this writing, it’s still opening and change is slow.
This, however, is electric. Like Johnny Cash’s prison records, it has that wild energy of caged humans desperate for entertainment, just to feel human again. According to Colin Escott’s liner notes, over 80% of the women incarcerated at the time of recording were in jail for killing a two-timing or abusive lover, and Mack plays to the crowd and they’re in his hands the whole time. These ladies are into it and the album is well worth checking out.
Dig it.

RIP 66
26 DECEMBER 2004
FIREMAN
FLAME
SNUFFED
"Rockin' My Life Away," by the late, great Mack Vickery, divulged to me (TPA) at one of JERRY LEE LEWIS's,
Nesbit, MS ranch, birthday parties,
in answer to my questioning of the significance of the seemingly random set of numbers with which JLL introduces his anthem:
Well, Hoss, i used to play touch football with elvis at graceland, and it's a quarterback play we used to run!
i said,
oh...
and smiled!

See Ya at What Gets Me Hot: Jerry Lee Lewis duets with Mack Vickery on Mack's Rockin' My Life Away with James Burton and Bob Moore - Merle Kilgore sings Mack Vickery's When You Get on the Whiskey (Let Somebody Else Drive)
0 notes
Jerry Lee's post-Southern Roots recordings for Mercury are uneven at best, but he still had one more great comeback left in him. By the end of 1978, Jerry Lee had found a new recording sponsor in the Nashville arm of Elektra Records. Upon signing, Elektra executives promptly told him that they would not record him in Nashville. They were going to change the environment. During a four-day blowout in the Filmway/Heider Studio in Hollywood, Jerry Lee recorded the terrific Jerry Lee Lewis, which yielded "Rockin' My Life Away."
Mack Vickery's "Rockin' My Life Away" was a wonderful autumnal rocker that immediately became Jerry Lee's statement of purpose and all-purpose theme song. The sparkling lyrics vacillated between the obscure and the bizarre, but the feel was right. What did those words mean? The first line of the song, after all, was "14, 25,40, 98," and the lines rolled out of Jerry Lee's mouth as if they had some deep meaning. In fact, Vickery had conceived of the song as a Specialty-era Little Richard-style rocker, with the first line scooping up tension like a quarterback calling signals before a play. But in Jerry Lee's music, how something is said is far more important than what is said, which is part of why "Rockin' My Life Away" was so intense and enjoyable. "Watch me now," Jerry Lee shouted before his solo, and in a few seconds he erased five years of bad memories.

John Anderson – “Tokyo, Oklahoma”
Song written by Mack Vickery. I don’t think Anderson sings this one on stage anymore...probably because of that “be honorable number one wife to you” line.
