How about the other alphas? Also, do the elementals and timekeepers not come from the alphas?
Elementals come from Neutral Energy, which is the leftover energy from when the Alpha kwamis first divided. So yes they come from Alphas, but not from a certain one in particular. Timekeepers also come from Neutral Energy, but they are descended from a former Elemental, Eeterna, the kwami of Time, who divided to become the Timekeepers.

Maggie Eagle Bear (Sheila Tousey) from Thunderheart (1992)
(dir. Michael Apted)
DOES THE NDN LIVE? : NO
---
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS:
Thunderheart is heavily inspired by the American Indian Movement and the standoff at Wounded Knee. Maggie Eagle Bear is an activist and a lawyer fighting injustice on and off the reservation. She is murdered off screen and her body is found in the desert towards the end of the film. Despite that, she is the best character in the film and remains a strong, dignified and driven character throughout the narrative.

7, 13, 21 :)
7.) A book that left you feeling overwhelmed with happiness.
I will most likely never forget how suffused with internal light I was after reading Eagle of the Ninth for the first time last year!! Reading it last spring after coming out of a time of shadows was such an excellent decision, and I have a very fond memory of reading it in my living room and having to occasionally stand up and walk around the room because the relationships in that book were so loving and so sweet that I couldn't bear it!!! There is so much faithfulness and constancy in Rosemary Sutcliff's books that fills me with incredible joy indeed.
13.) A book you love for its prose.
I've loved Maggie Stiefvater for a long time, and probably always will, but something about The Dream Thieves hits different for me. There's a passage in it about Maura that I have written down and read over when struggling to this day, because it made and makes me feel known so completely, right through to the bone.
A more recent read though is that of Rose Daughter, which has such a gracious, jewel-rich tone of voice that I love, incredibly careful and slow-moving in its movements, and I think I hold it very close to me. I have a feeling it's not really a book for everyone, but reading it on an Indian summer day in October was something magical and special, and a lot of that is due to its writing.
21.) A book that improved upon reread.
I talk a lot about it being one of my dearest books now, but actually when I read The Blue Castle I only liked it. I did read it a few years after virtually every other of L.M.M's books, and I think it suffered a little due to that. Even though I know now that Valancy is very close to a lot of other characters that matter a lot to me (like Anne Elliot specifically), I didn't quite have the personal impetus to tie to that story like I do now. It's grown up with me over time, that is for certain.

Thunderheart arranged marriage or bodyguard AU pleeeeeeease??
Oh man, my imagination was not kind with the headcanons but it did combine the two together and supplied me with:
Ray Levoi is the prince of a small country, in an arranged marriage with Maggie Eagle Bear. Neither are particularly happy with the arrangement - especially Ray, who has had to leave his country, but both know the marriage will be beneficial for both of their countrymen. Walter Crow Horse, head of Maggie’s security detail, has been assigned as Ray’s bodyguard. Sparks fly.
Also Maggie lives throughout this whole AU I refuse anything less.

Books, September - October 2020
A Nice Derangement of Epitaphs - Ellis Peters [”Carve this upon Morwenna’s Grave: / NONE BUT THE BRAVE DESERVES THE BRAVE.” You know, the verse is what gives away Pargeter’s experience as a literary translator - whether it’s singing translations of Mahler, or Welsh lament, or, as here, Dryden willfully misquoted and mixed with convention and double meanings, she so clearly enjoyed its sounds and allusions. None of it is the highest art, but all of it is distinct and memorable and precisely right for its purpose.]
The Disaster Tourist - Yun Ko-Eun, translated by Lizzie Bueler
The Angel of the Crows - Katherine Addison [look, you may SAY you filed the serial numbers off your BBC Sherlock wingfic, but you didn’t file them very hard, did you??? (It is, actually, cumulatively extremely different - at least based on the first two seasons, which is all I could bear to watch before I was fed up and over it - but I can see where all the edges were.)]
The Eagle of the Ninth - Rosemary Sutcliff
Passing - Nella Larsen
The Story of More: How We Got to Climate Change and Where to Go from Here - Hope Jahren
The Quest for Saint Camber - Katherine Kurtz
The Innkeeper’s Song - Peter S. Beagle *
The Pull of the Stars - Emma Donoghue [it’s Emma Donoghue, so of course it’s gorgeously done, but 1918 + the Ryan report + many extremely graphic descriptions of labor and delivery, and you know she doesn’t believe in easy happy endings in her historical fiction, so...] *??
Hamnet - Maggie O’Farrell
Regency Buck - Georgette Heyer
Daring and the Duke - Sarah MacLean
Anne of the Island - L. M. Montgomery
H is for Hawk - Helen MacDonald
The Care and Feeding of Waspish Widows - Olivia Waite [ridiculous cover, less food than hoped for, agonizingly slow burn; also, I enjoyed this much more than Celestial Mechanics]
Transcendent Kingdom - Yaa Gyasi
The Piper on the Mountain - Ellis Peters
Never Caught: The Washingtons' Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge - Erica Armstrong Dunbar
Mexican Gothic - Silvia Moreno-Garcia
The Turn of the Key - Ruth Ware
The Bird Way: A New Look at How Birds Talk, Work, Play, Parent, and Think - Jennifer Ackerman
Piranesi - Susanna Clarke *
Sorcerer to the Crown - Zen Cho * [I enjoyed this the first time I read it, but rereading made me like it even more; note that in real life Rollo would drive me up the wall, but in fiction he’s delightful]
1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus - Charles Mann [honestly, there were big chunks of this that I know well enough that I could have skimmed...but on the other hand, I don’t know much of anything about post-Pleistocene, pre-Inkan South America, so I appreciated those sections]
The Mark of the Horse Lord - Rosemary Sutcliff
Black is the Colour of My True Love’s Heart - Ellis Peters *
Tam Lin - Pamela Dean
Once Upon a Time in the North - Philip Pullman
Murder Must Advertise - Dorothy L. Sayers *
The Unknown Shore - Patrick O’Brian
Can’t Even: How Millenials Became the Burnout Generation - Anne Helen Petersen [definitely didn’t need a book-length version of this article, but I couldn’t sleep so what the hell]
The Big Six - Arthur Ransome
The Grass Widow’s Tale - Ellis Peters
Fool’s War - Sarah Zettel
The Nine Tailors - Dorothy L. Sayers
Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Reinforce Racism - Safiya Umoja Noble

Animal symbolism/comparison reference
So I really like to write animal symbolism with characters, so here’s just a reference for the West End gals for now!
(Note: Before any of you get cranky, this has nothing to do with them looking like the animal. It’s based on what animal I think represents/fits each character and that’s what I use to symbolize them.)
Aragon- Lioness, eagle, stag
Anne- Snake, raccoon, monkey, gremlin, cougar/mountain lion/puma (Courtney!Anne exclusively)
Jane- White tiger
Cleves- Wolf
Kitty- Kitten, weasel
Cathy- Owl, timber wolf
Bessie- Bear, Tasmanian devil, wolverine
Maria- Lion
Maggie- Ferret
Joan- Lamb, ram, black sheep, ice dragon
