Types of Injuries
A work injury may be the result of a single incident, such as dropping a heavy object on your foot, or cutting your finger on a machine.
An injury may also be the result of continuous trauma (“ct”) of work activities over a period of time, for example, a person whose job requires the lifting of heavy objects over a period of time may develop back or neck pain. Another example would be a person whose job requires repetitive motion of the hands or wrists such as assembly work or typing at a computer. This work might develop carpal tunnel syndrome or repetitive use syndrome of the wrists, and this would also be considered a work injury entitling a person to the same benefits as if it had been a specific injury. Another example of continuous trauma would be an employee, either by the nature of the job or harassments of the management, developed stress, anxiety and depression. This type of injury will constitute a psychological claim.
Filing a Workers Compensation Claim
All employers in California must have Workers’ Compensation coverage. In California Workers’ Compensation is a no-fault system.
A majority of injuries are covered under Workers’ Compensation such as asbestos, diseases, illnesses, accidents and death due to employment. Workers’ Compensation does not limit the injury. The issue is whether you were injured while employed at your job. If you sustained an on the job injury then you are entitled to benefits to help you recover from that injury.
You may think that you do not have case because you worked as a Gardner, trucker or maid but you have rights. Your job title does not define whether you are entitled to Worker’s Compensation benefits. Your entitlement to benefits can be limited by the amount of hours worked within a 90 day period or amount of wages earned in a 90 day period. For these reasons you need to seek legal counsel.
What if my Employer does not have Workers’ Compensation Coverage?
The State of California will pick up the claim through the Uninsured Employer Fund. It is illegal for a company not to be insured for Workers’ Compensation but it does happen. Penalties can be assessed against a company that does not hold Workers’ Compensation Insurance. This does not affect your case as an injured worker. Your case will continue against the Uninsured Employer Fund. You may still obtain medical benefits.
Types of Workers’ Compensation Injury Cases
Our attorneys handle various types of work place injuries. Below are just a few examples:
– Carpel Tunnel, Tendonitis or other repetitive motion injuries – Muscular injuries, broken bones, torn ligaments, torn rotator cuffs, Neck Back and herniated disks from lifting, pushing, or other actions – Toxic Exposure – Hearing loss – Respiratory illness – Head injuries like concussions or traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) from falling objects or falls – Construction accidents – Burns – Hypertension – Assorted injuries to the back, spinal cord, shoulder, eyes, knees, neck, hip, ankles, wrists, feet and hands – Infections disease and other injuries sustained by healthcare workers – Trucking Accidents or other MVA accidents that occurred on the job – Paraplegic – Loss of Vision
What benefits am I entitled to?
An employer Workers’ Compensation Insurance Carrier is required to pay for necessary medical treatments, testing, and prescription drugs associated with a work injury. They also may pay temporary total disability benefits if you are unable to return to work while you heal.
If I file a Workers’ Compensation Claim can my employer fire me?
An employer cannot fire you for filing a claim. If so, then you have 1 year from the date of injury to file a 132a claim against the employer.
Can I sue my employer for my injury?
Workers’ Compensation is the exclusive remedy. You cannot file a civil action against the employer. However, there may be a third party claim if a third party contributed to the accident
Temporary Total Disability
If you cannot perform the work which you were hired for due to a work related injury you may be entitled to temporary total disability benefits. These benefits are based on your average weekly wage. Although they are lower than your weekly wage they are tax free.
Temporary total disability benefits will assist you in paying for life’s necessities such as food, rent, and living expenses. It will ease your mind knowing that while you are recuperating from your injury money will be coming in to help you pay for your necessities. This will take the pressure off as you heal from your industrial injury.
According to State Legislature temporary total disability benefits are only for a 104 week period. This benefit is only available for admitted claims. It may be necessary to prove that you sustained an injury at work. If this is the case we will need to obtain medical reports to prove your injury. Cases that are originally denied can be admitted at a later date. It is our job to work with you to gather the necessary evidence to prove up the injury. If necessary we will work the case up to go to trial on the limited issue of AOE/COE in order to obtain temporary total disability benefits for you.
In denied claims the Insurance Company will not provide temporary total disability benefits. If your claim has been denied by the Insurance Company you may be eligible for EDD benefits. EDD benefits are only available for a 1 year period.
It is our philosophy to obtain the best outcome for your case. We will do everything we can to help you obtain the benefits you are entitled to.

Journey Through the Genres 5 - Historical Fiction Crawl
By: Hannah CT
Hello everyone! Last year HannahCT made this word crawl for all of us to enjoy. Unfortunately they are unable to run it this year, and so I am re-posting a new competition for this year with their blessing. I will be updating the main post regularly, so please keep an eye on it for updates. And thank you to HannahCT for all the hard work you put in to this crawl!
Introduction This crawl is the fifth round in the Journey Through the Genres Challenge 15, although it can also be completed as a stand alone crawl.
Welcome to Hawthorne Manor, ancestral home of the Hawthorne family and also home to their many servants. The occupants of the house are looking forward to celebrating Christmas, but the holiday spirit is dampened by a series of thefts. Join the occupants of Hawthorne Manor as they try to figure out who the thief is before the bad feeling generated by the thefts ruins the Christmas spirit.
Dramatis Personae
Adult family members
Lord Rupert Hawthorne - Lord of the manor, inherited the position just under a year ago after his father and older brother died in a carriage accident on New Year’s Eve. Rumoured to have gambling debts. Lost his first wife (Helen) to consumption and his second (Lucinda) in childbirth and has recently married for a third time.
Lady Elizabeth Hawthorne - Rupert’s mother, who is still in mourning for her husband and eldest son and disapproves of Rupert’s wish to throw a lavish Christmas party. She has been monitoring Rupert’s spending carefully and also keeps a careful watch over the rest of the household. [Not playable]
Lady Annabelle Hawthorne - Rupert’s third wife, who became engaged to him just after he inherited the estate. Known for her lavish gowns and love for expensive trinkets.
Younger family memebers
Percival (Percy) Hawthorne - son of Rupert and Helen. Aged 17 and in his final year at boarding school. Rumoured to have ‘got in with the wrong sort’.
Sophia Hawthorne - daughter of Rupert and Helen, aged 13. Wants to go to school like her brother does but her father and grandmother have forbidden it and dismissed the governess they blamed for giving her ‘fanciful ideas’.
Lavender (8), Rosemary (7), Iris (5) and Robert (4) - children of Rupert and his second wife, Lucinda. Largely ignored by the rest of the family. [Not playable]
Distant family & friends
Constance (Connie) Greystone - a distant relation of Lady Elizabeth, from a poorer branch of the family. Acts as companion to Lady Annabelle, but the two don’t get on very well. Annabelle believes that Connie is spying on her for Elizabeth’s benefit, and Connie hates seeing how wasteful Annabelle can be with money. Connie came to live at Hawthorne Manor because her own family’s home is crumbling and needs extensive repairs, but would rather be at home with her parents and siblings or have a house of her own.
Toby Mead - a friend of Percy’s from school, who Percy has unexpectedly invited home for the holidays. Lady Elizabeth is very suspicious of him and doesn’t think he’s a good influence on Percy.
Upper Servants
Mr Brownlee - Butler, has served the family for years. Has the keys to both the silver cabinet and the wine cellar.
Mrs Piper - Housekeeper, widowed four years ago and currently trying to save enough money to pay for William, her extremely clever youngest son, to continue attending school rather than going into to service.
Mrs Brownlee - Cook, wife of Mr Brownlee. Has a fondness for alcohol, especially the good stuff. She’s been caught raiding the family cellar a few times, but has been kept on because Lord Rupert’s late father was especially fond of her food and couldn’t bear to lose both that and Mr Brownlee’s efficient hand at the same time.
Mid-level servants
Matilda (Tilly) Swift - Chamber Maid, generally anything but swift and often in trouble because of it. Hates being in service and doesn’t get on with Mrs Piper. Has frequently talked about running away to London, but doesn’t have the money to do so.
Polly Dexter - Kitchen Maid, eldest of 11 children. Sends almost all her pay home to help support her family but with her father recently injured and unable to work Polly’s wages aren’t going to be enough to keep the family warm and fed this winter.
Nicholas Mason - Footman, only recently appointed to the position. Keeps himself to himself and has barely interacted with the other servants except when his job requires him to do so. Some of them respect him for this, whilst others think his behaviour means he must be hiding something.
Low-level servants
Robbie Piper - Hall & Boot Boy, Mrs Piper’s eldest child. Takes his role as ‘man of the family’ seriously and would do anything to help his mother send William to school. Is hoping for a promotion to footman now that he’s had his growth spurt.
Lizzie Piper - Scullery & Laundry Maid, William’s twin sister. She’s resentful that William gets to continue attending school whilst she has to work long, hard days in service.
Other (unplayable) Lady’s maids and valets for the adults and teenage children Nanny for the younger children Additional chamber maids, kitchen maids and scullery maid Additional footmen Outdoor staff (garden and stables)
Before we begin, you need to figure out your station in life. Write for 10 minutes and then choose one of the characters listed for the number of words you wrote . For more information about the characters, read their entries in ‘dramatis personae’ above. (Higher WPM corresponds to a low station in life, because those characters have to work harder and therefore have larger word targets.)
1 to 250 words: Adult family member (Lord Rupert, Lady Annabelle) 251 to 350 words: Teen family member (Percy, Sophia) 351 to 450 words: Distant family/friend (Connie Greystone, Toby Mead) 451 to 600 words: Upper servant (Mr Brownlee, Mrs Brownlee, Mrs Piper) 601 to 800 words: Mid level servant (Tilly Swift, Polly Dexter, Nicholas Mason) More than 800 words: Low level servant (Robbie Piper, Lizzie Piper)
If you are participating in the Journey Through the Genres Challenge you must play as one of the characters in the bracket you fall into, although if you’re close to the borderline and you don’t feel your first attempt at this step was representative of your normal writing speed you may repeat the step to get a more representative result. If you are not participating in the Journey Through the Genres challenge you may make the crawl easier or harder by selecting a character from a different bracket. You may also choose to use a die with more than six sides for any die roll steps.
The day begins by waking up. Whether or not this is a pleasant experience depends on your station in life. Find the challenge for your character below and complete it.
Low level servants have the least pleasant start to the day. Write 400 words as you drag yourself out of bed into the frigid air of a December morning and begin your day’s work.
Mid level servants also awake to cold rooms, but your early morning tasks are slightly less unpleasant. Write 300 words as you complete them.
Upper level servants make sure all the early morning tasks are done, but you don’t have to do anything unpleasant yourself. Write 200 word s as you supervise your underlings.
Distant family/friends might get a fire lit in their room if they’re lucky, but if not at least they don’t immediately have work to do. Write 150 words as you rise and dress.
Teenage children do get a fire, and some assistance dressing. Write 100 words as your maid/valet helps you into your clothes.
Adult family members don’t have to get up until their rooms have been nicely warmed by the fire, and can lie abed awhile if they want to. Write 50 words as you take your time to get up and start your day.
After getting up, you continue with your morning routine. For lower servants this means hard and often unpleasant chores, whilst other servants also have to jump straight into working. Friends and family have a more luxurious start to the day, dressing with the help of servants and enjoying a more leisurely breakfast than the servants have time for. Write the number of words listed for your character:
Low level servants: 4050 words
Mid level servants: 3150 words
Upper level servants: 2400 words
Distant family/friends: 1800 words
Teenage children: 1350 words
Adult family members: 900 words
Mid-way through the morning, there is a commotion from the drawing room. Lady Elizabeth has discovered that a jewelled snuff box given to her late husband by a member of the royal family has gone missing. Write for 20 minutes as the news filters through the house.
Lady Elizabeth is so upset about the missing snuff box that she insists the entire household is gathered together, from Lord Rupert and Lady Annabelle down to Robbie and Lizzie Piper. The only people excused from the gathering are the four youngest children and their nanny, who remain in the nursery. Lady Elizabeth asks if anyone knows anything about the location of the snuff box. When nobody speaks up she directs the entire household to begin searching for it, with the instruction that nobody is allowed to leave the house until it is found.
As the search is conducted, write the number of words listed for your character:
Low level servants: 1050 words
Mid level servants: 800 words
Upper level servants: 600 words
Distant family/friends: 450 words
Teenage children: 300 words
Adult family members: 200 words
At the end of the search, Lady Elizabeth gathers everybody together again. The tension in the room is high as you all endure Lady Elizabeth’s stern glare. Roll a six-sided die and write for that many minutes as you wait for the stragglers to arrive. (If you roll a 1 or 2 and would rather write for longer, you may re-roll until you get a larger number.)
Once everyone is present, Lady Elizabeth informs you all that the snuff box hasn’t been found, so she will now be personally interviewing everybody and searching their possessions - both staff and family members. In the mean time, everyone is still banned from leaving the house except on essential errands that have been approved by Lady Elizabeth.
You know that you are innocent of taking the snuff box, but you do have either a clear motive or a clear opportunity and you are worried that you will be under suspicion. As you anxiously await your turn to be interviewed, write the number of words listed for your character:
Low level servants: 2700 words
Mid level servants: 2100 words
Upper level servants: 1600 words
Distant family/friends: 1200 words
Teenage children: 900 words
Adult family members: 600 words
Lady Elizabeth didn’t find anything when she searched your possessions, but as you feared the questions she asks in the interview make it clear you are under suspicion. As you attempt to explain yourself, write the number of words listed for your character: (The reason each character is under suspicion is listed in brackets)
Lizzie (resentful of being in service whilst twin brother goes to school) or Robbie (wants to help with brother’s school fees): 600 words
Tilly (responsible for cleaning the drawing room, wants to leave service), Polly (large family desperate for money) or Nicholas (reserved behaviour makes him seem suspicious): 450 words
Mr Brownlee (has all the keys, expected to lock up at night), Mrs Brownlee (has been previously caught raiding the cellar, might want money for more good alcohol), Mrs Piper (needs money to for her youngest son’s school fees): 350 words
Connie (needs money to repair her family home) or Toby (Lady Elizabeth believes he’s a bad influence, not much is known about his background): 250 words
Percy (Lady Elizabeth believes he’s got in with the wrong sort, and the theft happened just after he returned from school) or Sophia (could be acting out in anger over being denied schooling and her governess being dismissed, or saving up to run away): 200 words
Lord Rupert (gambling debts) or Lady Annabelle (has expensive tastes but Lady Elizabeth won’t allow her to spend freely): 150 words
The next morning Lady Elizabeth finds another trinket missing from the drawing room. You come under increased scrutiny and you know that other people are starting to talk about you behind your back, speculating about whether you are the thief. That night you decide to stay up and prove that you’re innocent by catching the real thief. Write for 30 minutes as you sneak out of your room and set up a watch in the hallway near the drawing room.
You doze off without noticing anything, waking up just in time to get back to your own room before people start moving around the house. Unfortunately for you there has been another theft overnight and somebody noticed you missing from your room, meaning that you are now the chief suspect. Do a 15 minute word war as you attempt to defend yourself.
You persuade Lady Elizabeth not to throw you out of the house, but when you return to your daily routine the rest of the household eye you with suspicion and don’t want to be seen interacting with you. Do a 3 digit challenge as you attempt to ignore the suspicious glances and whispers that are just loud enough for you to overhear.
The suspicion makes you even more determined to find the real thief, but you can’t risk drawing any more attention to yourself. Write for 5 minutes as you try and think of a way to continue your investigations without doing anything else that could make you look guilty.
You decide to start by figuring out who else had a reason or opportunity to steal the objects, but it’s tricky to eliminate people from your investigations when nobody wants to talk about the thefts with you in case it leads to them being suspected too. You begin by studying the daily routines of the staff and family to figure out who might have had access to the drawing room in between Lady Elizabeth checking it before bed in the evening and when she arises the following morning. As you attempt to get a picture of who is where within the house, write the number of words listed for your character:
Low level servants: 1100 words
Mid level servants: 850 words
Upper level servants: 625 words
Distant family/friends: 480 words
Teenage children: 360 words
Adult family members: 240 words
The first step of your investigations didn’t help much - Lady Elizabeth goes to bed before the family and rises after the servants so almost everyone has a chance to access the room when she is asleep. Many of the servants share rooms, but most are so tired from their work that they aren’t likely to wake just because someone left the room. You consider trying to watch the room overnight again, but there haven’t been any thefts for a few days and your previous attempt to catch the thief in action is what has led to you being the chief suspect now. Instead, you take advantage of a slight thawing in people’s attitudes towards you to begin figuring out who might have a motive to steal the objects. Write for 1 hour as you attempt to steer conversations in the direction you want them to go without being too obvious about it.
After a few days with no theft, three objects go missing in one night. Lady Elizabeth is getting increasingly angry and orders another search of everyone’s belongings, but nothing is found. Nobody feels much like preparing for Christmas under the circumstances but you don’t have a choice - certain standards must be maintained and everyone wants to make sure that the younger children are still able to enjoy the holiday. Due to the delay that all the searches have caused, even the family pitch in to help get the house ready for Christmas Day (although naturally the servants still do the bulk of the work, especially anything difficult or unpleasant). As you work on your assigned tasks, write the number of words listed for your character:
Low level servants: 1350 words
Mid level servants: 1050 words
Upper level servants: 800 words
Distant family/friends: 600 words
Teenage children: 450 words
Adult family members: 300 words
The little children are having a great time helping to decorate the house, and their joy lifts everyone’s spirits for a while. By the time the seasonal tasks are finished the people you are working with have begun to treat you normally again. Write for 10 minutes as you enjoy the reprieve from being treated like a pariah.
Your reprieve doesn’t last long - the next day brings another theft. You’ve had enough of being suspected, so when Lady Elizabeth is searching your belongings yet again (and threatening to throw you out or fire you if you are a servant or a distant friend/family) you try to convince her to set a discreet watch on the room in question so that she can catch the real thief. The amount of persuading it requires to get her to agree to setting a watch rather than firing you / throwing you out / cutting off your allowance depends on your social position. As you make your case to Lady Elizabeth, write the number of words listed for your character:
Low level servants: 2250 words
Mid level servants: 1750 words
Upper level servants: 1300 words
Distant family/friends: 1000 words
Teenage children: 750 words
Adult family members: 500 words
Lady Elizabeth eventually agrees to set up a watch on the drawing room, but in order to make sure that you can’t arrange for any theft she insists that you and she are both amongst the watchers. The third and fourth people are a pair of trusted footmen who are instructed to sleep in shifts so that at least one of them is always awake - and can wake Lady Elizabeth up if she starts to drift off. The footmen are only told about this plan just before everyone else goes to bed, and you are forbidden from mentioning it to anyone before that - not that you’d want to, as if the real thief hears about the watch they aren’t likely to strike again and clear your name. When evening finally comes you, Lady Elizabeth and the footmen get into position and settle down to wait. Write for 20 minutes as you wait for the thief to appear.
The night seems to last forever, and when morning comes your eyes feel gritty and there has still been no sign of a thief. Things aren’t looking good for you, but just as you are about to give up you hear giggling and spot the two youngest children, five-year-old Iris and four-year-old Robert, making their way down the hallway. Lady Elizabeth frowns and tuts that they should be with their nanny. Before she can do anything about having them returned to the nursery they slip into the drawing room. A minute later they leave again, each clutching a trinket in their little hands.
You seem to have found the thieves, but Lady Elizabeth is curious about what the children are doing with the trinkets so instead of confronting them you and she quietly follow them through the house. The children return to the nursery and when you follow them through the door you catch them hiding the trinkets at the bottom of their toy box whilst the nanny is busy helping the two older children into their clothes for the day. When Lady Elizabeth investigates the toy box she finds the other missing items. Iris and Robert are very upset, saying that she is spoiling the surprise. They get very tearful and its hard to understand them, but eventually it becomes clear that the children intended to give the trinkets out as Christmas gifts and hadn’t understood that the trinkets weren’t theirs to give.
Lady Elizabeth seems to find the whole thing amusing, but you take a little longer to process your reaction - you’ve had to deal with a great deal of stress because of this whole mess. Whilst you process your emotions, write the number of words listed for your character:
Low level servants: 1700 words
Mid level servants: 1300 words
Upper level servants: 1000 words
Distant family/friends: 700 words
Teenage children: 550 words
Adult family members: 350 words
Two days later it’s Christmas morning. The goodwill in the house has been restored, and as an apology to everyone for the stress caused by his children Lord Rupert has increased the money in the servants’ Christmas envelopes by enough to make a real difference to those who were struggling for money. The children have also been taken out to buy proper gifts for everyone, including something nice for you as an apology for the suffering their actions caused you. Write for 12 minutes as everyone celebrates together.
Congratulations for completing the crawl! If you are participating in the Journey Through the Genres Challenge, remember to input your total words and total points into the sign-up/results sheet before the end of November in order for your results to count for the competition.

A Bad Batch Story
Chapter 1
“RUN!!”
“I’M RIGHT BEHIND YOU, DON’T STOP!!!”
Clones screams rose through the blasts and explosions.
“KEEP GOING!!”
A strong blast knocked you back and you see it a few feet away from you. The bomb sits there counting down. Your fear keeps you from moving.
“GO, WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!”
“DON’T JUST SIT THERE!!”
You look at the person running to you and your instincts kick in.
“DON’T!!” You scream.
“STOP!!” You yell as the bomb beeps louder and louder, and you start to run away from the explosive.
“PHOENIX!!!!” The person yells and you turn around in time to see them reaching out for
you.
!!!!BOOM!!!!
“NOOOO!!!” You scream as the bomb explodes and you see the outline of the clone being flung back... and that’s all you see before your vision fades to black.
You wake up and before you realize you are still screaming, You feel the sweat dripping and the tears running down your face. The memory of that day makes you shake with rage and crumble with pain. You sat with the sheets clenched in your hands, as you choked from the tears. It takes you a few minutes to finally get up and head for the shower, you turn the water on and let the water hit your face and letting it mix with your tears. “WHY!!” You scream in frustration and pain, tears running down your face, as you slide down to the floor; you pull your wet hair back in frustration and throw your head back, resting it against the wall. “Why” You quietly ask again.
You got dressed and put on the cloak you used to hide your armor. You packed up everything you had and left the room leaving a few credits for the maid to find, and pulled your hood up to hide your identity. This was your life, hunt down bounties and stay at places till you got a new bounty, it wasn’t what you thought your life would be; yet here you were with a new bounty worth a lot.
You might have been able to escape the ever growing Empire that would kill you if they knew who you were, but you couldn’t escape the memory that haunts you every time you sleep. You lost everything that day and thats why you chose to become a Bounty Hunter, so you could fill up your mind with information about the bounty. Your new bounty would help that because your new bounty was the legendary Fennec Shand...

A Bad Batch Story
Chapter 2
You climbed out the window and onto the metal stairs that, most used as a way to the streets rather than an escape from a fire. You however used it to avoid the people at the front desk and possible guards at the main entrance. You had to be more careful about who you trusted, you knew that you would become a valuable bounty if the Empire knew you were alive, one everybody would want.
When the Clone Wars ended you were shocked but you knew it was gonna end eventually. You weren’t the only one of course after all, the whole galaxy was shocked, it had become normal to hear about the war and how it just was still going year after year. Shortly after the announcement of the Clone Wars end whispers rose about the Clone Army, those whispers turned to rumors and, when you heard the rumor of the Clone Army wiping out the Jedi, your blood boiled in your veins.
Throughout the Clone Wars the Jedi and Clone Army fought side by side and that’s why everyone thought the rumor was false, but the truth was quickly discovered when villagers saw the Clones turn and shoot down the Jedi. You still didn’t believe, you couldn’t believe that the Clones would do such a thing. You just ignored the rumors, that was until you saw it...
The village of Tatooine had gotten news about the wars end, it was shocking and amazing and you watched as the clones hugged their Jedi and his padawan. They finally did it ! The war was over! Years of fighting and service was over ! All of it was... over!
“Execute Order 66.” A voice you can’t see says, but something about the voice chills you to your very core, makes you want to hide.
“Drop your weapons!” A Clone says, while signaling the others to circle around the Jedi and his young padawan.
“What are you doing!?” Says the Jedi alarmed, as the clones hold their guns at the Jedi and padawan.
“PUT THE WEAPONS DOWN!!” The Clone yells, all triggers ready to be pulled.
“What’s going on master?!?” The young girl says to her master, her body shaking with fear, as she looks up at her master.
“What is wrong soldier?” The Jedi says addressing the Clone who asked them to put the weapons down.
“GOOD SOLDIERS FOLLOW ORDERS!!!” The Clone yells, and your heart drops as the clones guns ring out, and the Jedi falls to the ground dead.
“NOOOOOOO!!!” The girl screams, tears running down her face. Igniting her lightsaber the small girl looks at the Clones with a heart broken look in her eyes.
“WHY!!” She screamed, those words hit you like a bullet, the words of grief.
“GOOD SOLDIERS FOLLOW ORDERS!!!” All of them shout and you watch in horror as the girl falls beside her master.
The Clones then leave and you wait for a few minutes just in case they come back. You run to the two figures laying on the ground, tears slide down your face, seeing the girl up close shook your body with anger and pain. She was too young to have died, and you choke on your pain.
“WHY!!” You scream, hurt by what you just witnessed. You lit a match and dropped it on the two Jedi, you knew that they burned the dead in temples and you didn’t have the heart to just leave them there. You then left and looked back to see villagers throwing a single match on the Jedi one at a time...

“Jeanne Boydston’s study of housework suggests another possible explanation for the tendency of parents to withdraw their daughters from domestic employ: the devaluation of housework itself as an activity of any economic value. The introduction of a cash economy into the interstices of post revolutionary American life meant that activities that did not customarily generate cash—including those myriad duties of domestic maintenance—became ‘‘invisible,’’ defined as something other than work both by those who did housework and by those who did not.
Women themselves increasingly devalued the importance of their own work, as evidenced by Lydia Almy of Salem, Massachusetts, who ‘‘wove, attended to livestock, made cider, carted wood, tanned skins, took in boarders,’’ but nonetheless, recorded in her diary that she was disturbed to know that she was ‘‘in no way due any thing towards earning my living,’’ unlike her mariner husband. The increasing tendency to define housework as hardly work at all, because of its unwaged (or low-waged) character, influenced the calculations of parents as they made decisions about their daughters’ lives.
Mary Virginia Terhune’s advice explicitly attributed a cash calculation— and an invidious distinction—to the attitudes of both daughters and their fathers toward daughters’ work, especially when girls had received educations. Fathers, she felt, imagined that ‘‘the labor of an educated woman,—especially if that woman is his child, and her scholastic education has cost him thousands of dollars—should . . . command a better market-price than that of an illiterate Celt, whose schooling cost nothing.’’ Daughters themselves might have adopted a wage theory of value to assess the value of their own labor, Terhune speculated. A middle-class daughter’s ‘‘time and strength are worth more than a seamstress’s, or chambermaid’s or cook’s wages. The world teems with seamstresses, chambermaids, and cooks, clamoring for the very work she abhors.’’
Frances Willard’s book of advice to girls put a different spin on the situation, based on a similar hierarchy of class. She urged middle-class daughters to aspire to higher work than housekeeping, arguing that opening a place for a domestic servant in their homes created a place for a destitute young woman who otherwise ‘‘might be tempted into paths of sin.’’ (Prostitutes themselves often compared the two vocations, to the disadvantage of housework.) Writing in the 1880s,Willard and Terhune did not lament the graduation of middle-class girls from housework; they seemed to agree that middle-class girls either had priced or should price themselves out of the market for domestic labor.
…One of those who worked for her living was Ann Ware Winsor herself, who ran a school from their home and sought other ways to eke out the family’s subsistence. In a letter to her daughter the previous summer, she informed Annie of several schemes she had for making money; for one, the boys would raise chickens. ‘‘While they make money out of hens, I expect you girls to make it out of small fruits, and I have engaged a lot of plants to be delivered here in the Spring for you to cultivate!’’ Ann Ware Winsor assured her daughter that not only would it provide a welcome contribution to the family coffers, but ‘‘That’s the way out of head-aches and other ails. Read some books on the subject and you will grow enthusiastic.’’
Despite the economic worries of the Winsor family, however, only one child, a middle son, actually worked at a paid job outside the home in 1880: seventeen-year-old Paul was a clerk at the railroad office. The eldest, Robert, was in college, and all the rest were in school, including nineteen-year-old Mary and fifteen-year-old Annie. Presumably the ‘‘opportunity costs’’ of educating the girls were low enough that it weighed against sacrificing their education. Family calculations also suggested that the daughters’ extra energies would be better used in assisting in teaching in their mother’s school than in doing housework. For the 1880 census indicated that the Winsor family employed three female servants. (Annie’s private journal recorded cryptically, ‘‘Maids are an abomination for children.’’)
…The growth of the market economy during the course of the nineteenth century meant that girls as well as their parents felt the need of cash. Those without access to cash sought strategies to make some, whatever their attitudes toward women’s wage work as a social development. Away at school in the cash-poor South, and largely abandoned as well by her father, Mary Thomas fantasized about alternative lives. In one of them she sold things, ‘‘for I mean to work a patch next year and make some money, if I don’t have to come back to school; and then at Christmas, I will have a right good lot of money to do as I please with, I think I shall get a watch with it.’’ Despite her clear disdain elsewhere in her diary for the notion of working for a living, Mary Thomas was willing to countenance work for wages in order to be able to participate in a consumer economy.
A fourteen-year-old subscriber to the youth magazine Harper’s Young People reported that she had earned the money for her subscription herself ‘‘by sewing for the black people.’’ She reported that she had to sew ‘‘very cheaply, because they are so poor’’; presumably her low wages also reflected her low level of skill. A correspondent to St. Nicholas also reported that she and her brother had earned the money for their subscription themselves—in this case by selling hickory nuts and onions. Elite girls came late to money earning. Mary Virginia Terhune charged late Victorian parents with discriminating against girls in their differential training in the basics of money management.
‘‘Jack raises chickens and sells the eggs and ‘broilers’ to Mamma. Willy splits kindling-wood for the kitchenfire and draws his lawful wages from Papa as would any other laborer. Mamie comes down to breakfast, as gay as the morning, hair bound with a blue ribbon that matches her eyes, waltzes up to Papa, in a gale of affectionate glee, throws her arms around his neck and begs for a kiss. She gets two and a gold dollar, fished up from the vest-pocket nearest the paternal heart—‘because she looks so pretty today.’’’ Terhune’s charge that girls were not given experience managing money had some basis.
Women were not paid wages for housework; instead, their work was supposed to come ‘‘from the heart,’’ and to be inspired by devotion to the family good. To the extent that girls shared in their mothers’ lots, they too were encouraged to dust, to make beds, and to shell peas not as entrepreneurs but as part of their responsibilities to womanly service. However, just as housewives made some cash through the nineteenth century for a variety of home manufactures, girls too might learn to work for profit in performing those home tasks still considered ‘‘productive.’’
…Good parents saw to it that daughters had some skills in handling their own money—and because few urban girls had the money-making possibilities available to Margaret Tileston on her family’s farm, some of them began to receive small sums in the form of a regular allowance. An 1897 study on ‘‘Children’s Sense of Money’’ found that 7 percent of all girls were given a regular allowance. Jessie Wendover, the daughter of a prospering Newark grocer, was one. At the age of nine in 1881, she received ten cents a week allowance, which was raised to twenty-five cents by the time she was fourteen. She kept a careful account of every expenditure.
At fourteen, her expenditures included an occasional soda water (ten cents), ice cream, Sunday school donation (five cents), a variety of school supplies, carfare, ribbons, music. Although she was not usually responsible for buying her own clothes, she also recorded paying twenty-five cents several times for a bustle, perhaps because it was not encouraged by her mother, or more likely because it was one of the few ready-made items in her wardrobe. She paid for her own magazine subscription to St. Nicholas, $2.75, or nearly three months’ allowance. As befitted her regular habits, Jessie Wendover customarily carried a balance of $5 or so from month to month, except when depleted by the Christmas season.
By 1887, when Wendover was fifteen, she was receiving fifty cents a week, and recorded paying twenty-five cents ‘‘to see picture ‘Christ on Calvary.’’’ At sixteen, she developed a taste for milkshakes, a habit of occasionally eating lunch out, and a preference for having her bangs cut by a salon. Chewing gum, peanuts, and marshmallows made their appearance in her accounts in the summer of 1888, but so did regular contributions to the missionary box, and in the fall, a donation for yellow fever sufferers. The following year she noted frequent small outlays for hokeypoky—ice cream—and she once spent seventy-five cents to have her hair shampooed.
But in October of that year she was sufficiently ahead to deposit $3.00 in the bank, and in September of 1892, her twentieth year, $20.00. Clearly Jessie Wendover’s ample allowance and her own prudence allowed her early to learn not only how to spend money and account for it but also how to save it—all important lessons for bourgeois helpmates. Another pattern though seemed to be gaining currency at the same time. Increasingly, household chores began to creep in as part of the way that parents justified giving money to youth.
…Occasionally, and unevenly, girls’ diaries began to suggest that they themselves were beginning to expect and to receive wages for work done for their families. Marian Nichols reported receiving wages for family sewing. ‘‘Worked on some drawers for Margaret. Mamma is to pay 30 cts a pair for them.’’ The next year she reported that she was even getting paid for exercise. ‘‘Went to school. Walked in and out by myself. Rosy doesn’t like my getting money from walking out. I get 3 cts.’’ Jane Addams’s father paid her for every volume of Plutarch she read and reported on, as well as for every volume of such things as Irving’s Life of Washington, ‘‘after the manner of Victorian fathers,’’ according to Anne Scott.
The custom of paying daughters for their work in the bourgeois family suggested a new approach to girls as well as to family economics. The same study that tracked the development of the ‘‘allowance’’ also discovered that fully a quarter of all girls reported making money for doing housework. It is no wonder that girls increasingly began to resist doing housework as part of their womanly lot that others were getting paid to do. Giving girls allowances was good Victorian practice—encouraging regularity of habits, responsibility, careful accounting, and prudence.
Yet in its tendency to evolve into a quid pro quo for performing household and other kinds of chores it contributed to a radical new notion well expressed in the economic writings of Charlotte Perkins Gilman—the notion that daughters, if not their mothers, were autonomous economic beings in control of their own labor, and able to exchange it for currency. When Victorian fathers paid their daughters wages for housework, they were laying the seeds of turn-of-the-century rebellions against conventional notions of female self-sacrifice as woman’s natural lot.”
- Jane H. Hunter, “Daughters’ Lives and the Work of the Middle-Class Home.” in How Young Ladies Became Girls: The Victorian Origins of American Girlhood

Coping. Are you?
I hope you all have kept yourself safe, productive, and entertained while we’re dealing with distancing/lockdowns/stay-at-home orders. A few thoughts as my first jobless week comes to a close:
I haven’t been out with the camera nearly as much as I thought I might. I know it’s healthy, even encouraged to get outside for some exercise, but I feel like hiking miles with my camera gear might be pushing it. Any thoughts?
I had to visit a local hospital for another Venous Duplex scan and a CT Scan for my recent DVT. I’m not so thrilled looking at the results of the Duplex scan and reading ‘persistent’ and ‘worsening’.
It was a bit apocalyptic walking into the hospital.  Locked entrances, cordoned off areas, security yelling directions on where to go. I was greeted by three nurses, all robed and masked, and questioned about my Covid-19 health status and why I was there. Understandable and necessary. But...you’re going to take my word about not having a fever? Why in the world would a hospital, of all places, not use a no-touch infrared digital forehead thermometer to check every patient?
I was contacted by my Hematologist’s office (many issues here-it’s a former regional cancer center taken over by my insurance company’s network and it’s a real mess) about a virtual visit. ‘Absolutely’, I finally said after the nurse couldn’t answer any of my tech questions, hoping for the best. After giving my email address, I haven’t heard a thing. I suspect I won’t, either. Perhaps they mean virtually no chance of this happening.
It’s great that I have time to get out and do yard work. Most of my spring cleanup is finished. I hope the weather warms up more so I can do some biking, too.
Hey, I received an email from my Tea-Party Senator that suggests I use a T-shirt or bandana to cover my face when I’m in public. Someone should stuff a T-shirt right in his Trump-loving, anti-science mouth. When he and Trump start wearing their dirty torn up T-shirts over their face, I’ll consider this dumb shit.
I purchased a new Blu-Ray player and it’s awesome. The old one wasn’t working well and the universal remote stopped holding a charge so I stopped watching movies in my living room with my 5.1 sound system. Now, everything is working again and the house is rumbling with the subwoofer! Hmm...maybe I should ask my tenants if it’s too loud. ;-)
I’ve been doing some cleaning, and I’ve been disgusted at what I’m finding. Not that I'm surprised because I absolutely hate dusting and avoid it at all costs...but wow. It’s not that my home is a pile of garbage-I’m pretty clean and organized and I keep things pretty neat. Maybe I need to hire a maid service, lol!
My current reading material? I’m still dragging my way through Midnight in Chernobyl, for obvious reasons.
I’m much happier watching old sitcoms. No, I haven’t seen the Tiger King yet, I’d rather keep cycling through the nerdy and hilarious IT Crowd.
