I’ve been a fan of Mairghread Scott mostly from her animation work, but also from some of her previous comics. (She’s done a lot of Transformers stuff, which isn’t my thing, but also a cool fantasy graphic novel set during the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.) This series is another fantasy, with pirates and monsters and magic, and I loved it. The story and characters are so much fun, and the art, by Pablo Tunica, is beautiful. Waiting for the next volume is going to be tough. #thismakesmehappy #books #2022reading #bookstagram #thismakesmehappy #books #comics #graphicnovel #fantasycomics #middlegradecomics #seaserpentsheir #piratesdaughter #mairghreadscott #pablotunica #imagecomics #skyboundcomics https://www.instagram.com/p/ClJtMMwPbcA/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Wonder Woman: Bloodlines (2019)
Tumblr media
Wonder Woman: Bloodlines proves even a so-so Rogues' Gallery can make for interesting characters with good storytelling. While this particular installment in the DC Animated Movie Universe suffers from budgetary restrictions (a growing concern), it’s a step above the 2009 film.
After rescuing Steve Trevor (Jeffrey Donovan) from the waters surrounding Themyscira, Princess Diana (Rosario Dawson) defies her mother and travels to “man’s world” with the Amazon’s divine weapons to protect humanity. While learning the customs of her new home with the help of Dr. Julia Kapatelis (Nia Vardalos), Diana befriends her teenage daughter, Vanessa (Marie Avgeropoulos). Five years later, Vanessa has grown to resent “Wonder Woman” and is transformed into the Silver Swan to aid Doctor Poison (Courtenay Taylor), Giganta (Kimberly Brooks), Cheetah (also Brooks), and Doctor Cyber (Mozhan Marnò) in a plot to attack the Amazon’s home.
Aside from Ares (who’s appeared in many films and television series already) and Dr. Psycho, all of Wonder Woman’s best-known enemies are present. Even relatively recent additions like Veronica Cale (voiced by Constance Zimmer) are incorporated. The most enjoyable aspect of the film is the ways it to incorporate so much into a 79-minute movie. You might scoff at the purple healing ray but it’s eloquently integrated into the plot, as is the invisible jet. This film is a sequel to Justice League War (though some of it takes place before) but it stands on its own and serves as a solid introduction to those who might not know Wonder Woman already.
So many villains mean we have many action scenes, all of which are different. The screenplay by Mairghread Scott manages to make Silver Swan pretty cool (non-threatening name aside). Her relationship with Diana showcases what makes this superhero so unique and beloved. Diana’s hopeful and forgiving - almost to a fault.
There’s plenty to enjoy and the twists/reveals give Bloodlines pretty good re-watch value. This makes the flaws that much more disappointing. The animation has gone far down since 2008's Batman: Gotham Knight, with the artists often struggling to keep Diana’s face on-model. Locations often feel empty, or conveniently framed to hide what would be expensive to show. Sometimes, there are straight-up errors, like Cheetah pulling a weapon from nowhere. Cool as it is, the climax struggles to keep power levels in check. Finally, there is the slight problem of Greek myths being reinterpreted in ways that raise questions. The Minotaur, for example. Part of the story is that the monster was killed… so if the creature shows up, what’s going on?
Despite the blemishes, this is an exciting adventure that showcases what makes Wonder Woman a favorite. The villains are cool, the dynamic between Steve Trevor and Wonder Woman is well executed. Key plot points are subtly hinted at, meaning you get the kind of surprises that make you go “I can’t believe I didn’t see that coming!” There’s one more reason to catch this film. On home video, there’s a great package of special features that include a short film Death, based on the character by Neil Gaiman. The movie's good, the short's even better. (August 27, 2020)

I had just finished the graphic novel Toil and Trouble by Mairghread Scott. It uses the Shakespearean take of Macbeth but from the witches point of view. - So I decided to make my own concept of the witches but place them in our time. I picked this up because 1) the cover art is beautiful! 2) it seemed like something interesting and witch-y. Which is definitely up my alley. I was not disappointed. Toll and Trouble is a fun.. not retelling but told from a different point of view Macbeth. It’s told from the side of the three witches, who if I remember right didn’t get near enough stage time in the original play. It’s an interesting story about family, fate, and ultimately forging your own path. The art is amazing! So if you enjoy Macbeth and magic then this comic is something that I would recommend. #toilandtrouble #mairghreadscott #kellyandnicholematthews #archaiacomics #comic #bookreview #macbeth #williamshakespeare https://www.instagram.com/p/B31FqlVh5_J/?igshid=r56knv7dabtl

Justice League Dark: Apokolips War (2020)
Tumblr media
Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is sort of the DC Universe Animated Original Movies' answer to "Avengers: Endgame" but grittier, edgier and less impactful. If you've followed the series that began with Justice League: The Flashpoint Paradox in 2012 it's probably worth checking out, though I wouldn't call it 100% satisfying.
After Superman (voiced by Jerry O'Connell) leads a disastrous attack against Darkseid (Tony Todd), most of the Justice League's members are crippled, killed, or forced to serve the galactic despot. Two years later, John Constantine (Matt Ryan), Raven (Taissa Farmiga), a de-powered Superman, Etrigan the Demon (Ray Chae) and Lois Lane (Rebecca Romijn) must scrape together what forces they can in a final, desperate gambit to free humanity and finish what they started.
This film wastes no time reminding you it's R-Rated. The heroes you love are dismembered, disemboweled, have their eyes gouged out, and die gruesomely minutes in. Yikes. I can understand wanting to show the attack on Apokolips went bad but you could've also left some carnage to the imagination. Trim the massacre and use the time to strengthen the story and characters. Although the film lasts 90 minutes, it moves so quickly there's hardly room to breathe as we go through a checklist of survivors. The Bat-family, Suicide Squad, Justice League," Dark" Justice League, Superman's supporting cast, and everyone in-between is confirmed dead or participating in this last-ditch effort as briefly as possible.
Several aspects of the story don't feel right. Superman suggests the Justice League attack Darkseid. Seems out of character. Just a few more lines could've cleared that up. Why's Harley Quinn (Hynden Walch) part of the main mission while Batgirl and Batwing are sent as distractions? She's just a loony with a gun! The few humourous reprieves don't land the way they should. It's nearly there consistently. The story isn't inherently bad but the execution leaves to be desired; like they just didn't have the time to hammer out all the kinks.
It's interesting to see a story that features a rag-tag team of heroes rather than the usual roster. Raven is particularly well utilized. Considering its home video destination, the animation is pretty good. If the objective is to shock and make it undoubtedly clear that this is it...JLD:AW certainly meets its objectives. Even the ending is well handled in the sense that it's all been foreshadowed and makes logical sense (even a little better than the way it was done in "Endgame") while still managing to surprise. If you've been enjoying the series, this is an appropriate conclusion to everything that's happened.
Justice League Dark: Apokolips War is accompanied by an Adam Strange short which is also excessively violent and morbid but is a nice bonus. Admit it. You're curious. Even though you're ready to be let down at least a bit, you want to see how it all ends. I'll say "sure, go ahead" but this isn't one you'll enthusiastically revisit. (On Blu-ray, June 21, 2020)

Another thread from IDW GI Joe writer Aubrey Sitterson, on why he changed the character Salvo—a white dude with a bodybuilder physique—into a dark-skinned, dreadlocked Samoan woman with a body type like a pro wrestler or powerbuilder. Text copied and edited together here, with a few notes for clarity:
My thread on lasers in G.I. Joe/Scarlett's Strike Force was well-received, so let's talk about something else that has upset a very vocal group of fans: The change from Salvo's original appearance to the current, as drawn by @musashinoelegy, @IliasKyriazis & @nelsondaniel
For the uninitiated, Salvo first showed up as an action figure in 1990. Quite some time ago, years past the property's peak era. Since then, while never one of the most popular Joes, he's become a cult favorite because LOOK AT HIM. He's rad in all the best early 90s ways.
Importantly, however, Salvo had not yet shown up in IDW's continuity. I know it doesn't matter to some folks, but it was important to me that we honor what came before by not retconning characters and stories.
I wanted to use Salvo because, again, LOOK AT HIM, but at the same time, the Joes, which had changed to an international team, were in desperate need of some non-American characters. At the time, I joked that Decepticon Skywarp was the only one.
Also, being entirely honest, as great as the design is, in 2017, a big, heavily muscled white guy with a shaved head, massive guns and a t-shirt that reads THE RIGHT OF MIGHT gives off a vibe that reads way too alt-right for me.
So I decided to change Salvo's gender and race, recontextualizing something that could have been read as problematic instead into something empowering. And what's more powerful than badass female wrestlers!? That's why I sent [illustrator] Giannis [professional wrestler] Nia Jax images for reference.
Every time the Olympics roll around, images like these [photoset of Olympic athletes of diverse heights, muscle tone, body mass, and body fat] get shared widely. The point of them is that athletes come in all shapes and sizes. The commonly held idea that you have to look like a fitness model to be an incredible athlete is bunk.
My thinking was that if Salvo was chosen for G.I. Joe in order to carry and fire hilariously massive weapons, she should be built for strength. More powerlifter, less bikini model. More thick limbs, less abs showing through t-shirts.
And Salvo wasn't the only character that got this treatment. Shipwreck also grew thicker as drawn by @musashinoelegy & @IliasKyriazis. (We haven't shown any of @nelsondaniel's similar take from Scarlett's Strike Force yet!)
But while some folks noted that Shipwreck had put on some pounds, his appearance didn't inspire the outrage and, frankly, vile, hateful comments that Salvo's has. When people were calling for my head a couple months ago, one of their biggest complaints was our new Salvo.
And while it's not a one-to-one comparison (Shipwreck is still a Hispanic man, whereas Salvo has changed to a Samoan woman) I think the overwhelming differences in response are telling. Certain people don't want to see women of color, especially larger WOC in their comics.
And because the mere existence and depiction of larger WOC is so unacceptable to those people, that makes the representation of larger WOC all that much more important. G.I. Joe, as a concept, has always been about inclusion and inclusion means EVERYONE.
I'm proud of the work that we've all done on G.I. Joe and are currently doing on Scarlett's Strike Force. And while I wish everyone loved and adored it, there's something to be said for ticking off the right people, which we clearly have.
G.I. Joe and the new Scarlett's Strike Force have been designed from the ground-up to be inclusive and aspirational. While I'm not perfect on this stuff (@MairghreadScott checked me on a thing early on – many thanks for that), it is something I strive for.
I keep calling G.I. Joe "The Crown Jewel of the Hasbro Universe" and Scarlett's Strike Force "The Best Action Comic Ever" and inclusivity is a huge part of that. If the books weren't inclusive, neither of those claims would hold any water.
Finally, at the risk of seeming self-serving: Reading and RTing threads about inclusive comics is great, but what's even better is BUYING inclusive comics so they can keep getting made. Scarlett's Strike Force hits stores 12/27. Ask your local retailer to order you one today.
It’s especially interesting for me as a reader to see how Shipwreck is spun—a fat vegetarian character is entirely unheard of in comics, and it’s strongly implied that he’s at least flirty with fellow Joe dude Gung-Ho, if not outright in a relationship with him.

This Wednesday, IDW Publishing’s First Strike crossover begins, heralding the beginning of “year 2” of their shared Hasbro Universe stories. The Allspark is here to make sure you’re ready, and today we’re going to recap the various issues that are (and aren’t!) going to be part of the event! Read on for the lowdown!
The main event…
#gallery-0-7 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-7 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 14%; } #gallery-0-7 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-7 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
First Strike #0
First Strike #1
First Strike #2
First Strike #3
First Strike #4
First Strike #5
First Strike #6
The core of First Strike is the eponymous mini-series, which will run for six issues, two per month starting in August. A bonus issue #0 has already been released, free to read on a variety of comics platforms, whilst issue #1 comes out this week!
Written by Till All Are One‘s Mairghread Scott and David A. Rodriguez, with art by Max Dunar and Ander Zarate of Micronauts, this mini-series tells the main of the crossover event, and can be happily read just by itself – you don’t have to read the tie-in issues if you don’t want to.
First Strike kicks off just as Earth is formally joining the Council of Worlds, when the ceremony is interrupted by a reborn Cobra, led by Baron Ironblood. Ironblood’s alliance of villains plan to use the power of the Talisman, the mysterious artifact from Revolutionaries, to kill every Transformer on Cybertron, and the heroes of the Hasbro Universe must team up to foil them!
The tie-ins…
#gallery-0-8 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-8 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 16%; } #gallery-0-8 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-8 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
Optimus Prime (Pt. 1)
Transformers (Pt. 2)
G.I. Joe (Pt. 1)
M.A.S.K. (Pt. 2)
Micronauts (Pt. 1)
Rom (Pt. 2)
Meanwhile, six tie-in one-shots are being released for First Strike, three in September and three in October. These issues pair up to form three two-part stories:
Optimus Prime / Transformers: Optimus Prime and Arcee team up with the Revolutionaries in the wilds of Cybertron to face the mercenary Colditz! Written by John Barber and drawn by Guido Guidi.
G.I. Joe / M.A.S.K.: Matt Trakker and G.I. Joe team up to fight V.E.N.O.M., who have signed up to join Cobra! Written by Aubrey Sitterson and drawn by Ilias Kyriazis.
Micronauts / Rom: With Earth’s heroes headed to Cybertron, it’s down to Rom and the Micronauts to defend the world from a new Dire Wraith threat! Written by Christos Gage and drawn by Chris Panda.
In addition to expanding the story of First Strike, these tie-ins also tease some upcoming new ongoing series, namely G.I. Joe: Unmasked, in which Matt Trakker will stick around with G.I. Joe, and Rom and the Micronauts, in which the tiny travellers are recruited to help the Space Knight end the Dire Wraith threat once and for all.
Meanwhile…
Whilst the crossover rages, both Optimus Prime and The Transformers: Lost Light will be continuing regular-numbered issues, carrying on their normal storylines without influence from the main event. In Optimus Prime, the absence of the titular Prime and his inner circle will give secondary characters like the colonist soldiers and Jazz more time to shine, whilst Lost Light is kicking off a three-issue storyline that catches up with Getaway and his crew of mutineers!
So if crossovers really, really aren’t your thing, you can continue your regularly-scheduled dose of Transformers as per usual!
The Allspark’s First Strike coverage will continue tomorrow with a special bonus episode of the Action and Adventure podcast, in which we’ll catch you up on what’s been happening in the Hasbro Universe since Revolution, and give you some reading recommendations!
In the meantime, check out the first six pages of First Strike #1, and discuss the upcoming event on the Allspark Forums!
Countdown to First Strike: Get the Facts! @MairghreadScott @DaveARodriguez This Wednesday, IDW Publishing's First Strike crossover begins, heralding the beginning of "year 2" of their shared Hasbro Universe stories.
