Trendy Floral Themes for New York Weddings
New York weddings are known for their sophistication and style. Staying abreast of the latest floral trends can help you create a wedding that's both timeless and trendy.
Classic Elegance
Classic elegance never goes out of style. Think roses, peonies, and orchids in neutral tones like white, ivory, and blush. These timeless flowers exude sophistication and grace.
Rustic Chic
For a more relaxed and earthy vibe, consider a rustic chic theme. Wildflowers, greenery, and wooden accents create a charming and intimate atmosphere that feels effortlessly romantic.
Modern Minimalism
Minimalist weddings focus on simplicity and clean lines. Opt for monochromatic color schemes and sleek floral arrangements with plenty of negative space. Less is more when it comes to modern minimalism.
Seasonal Flowers and Their Benefits
Choosing seasonal flowers for your wedding not only ensures freshness but also helps you stay within budget. Let's explore the benefits of incorporating seasonal blooms into your wedding arrangements.
Spring Blooms
Spring is synonymous with renewal and new beginnings. Popular spring flowers include tulips, daffodils, and cherry blossoms. These blooms add a fresh and vibrant touch to your wedding decor.
Summer Blossoms
Summer weddings offer a wide array of floral options. Sunflowers, dahlias, and lilies thrive during this season, bringing bold colors and cheerful energy to your celebration.
Autumn Hues
Fall weddings are all about warm and rich tones. Incorporate flowers like marigolds, chrysanthemums, and dahlias in shades of orange, red, and gold for a cozy and inviting ambiance.
Winter Wonders
Winter weddings call for elegant and luxurious blooms. Amaryllis, poinsettias, and holly create a festive and opulent atmosphere, perfect for celebrating love in the colder months.
Incorporating Greenery and Foliage
Greenery and foliage are more than just fillers; they add depth and texture to your floral arrangements. Our designers at Lenox Hill Florist & Events know how to use greenery to enhance the beauty of your flowers.
Eucalyptus Elegance
Eucalyptus leaves are a popular choice for wedding arrangements. Their soft, silvery-green hue complements a wide range of flowers and adds a touch of elegance to any bouquet.
Ferns and Ivy
Ferns and ivy bring a lush and verdant feel to your decor. These versatile greens can be used in everything from centerpieces to archways, creating a natural and organic look.
Succulent Accents
Succulents are perfect for adding a modern twist to your floral arrangements. Their unique shapes and colors make them a standout addition to bouquets, boutonnieres, and table settings.
Expert Tips for Choosing Your Wedding Flowers
Selecting the perfect flowers for your wedding involves more than just picking your favorites. Here are some expert tips to help you make the best choices for your big day.
Consider Your Venue
Your wedding venue plays a significant role in determining the types of flowers and arrangements that will work best. For example, tall centerpieces may be ideal for grand ballrooms, while smaller, more intimate settings might benefit from low, lush arrangements.
Think About Your Color Scheme
Your wedding color scheme should guide your floral choices. Whether you prefer bold and vibrant hues or soft and muted tones, our designers can help you select flowers that complement your palette.
Keep Your Budget in Mind
It's essential to have a clear budget for your wedding flowers. At Lenox Hill Florist & Events, we work with you to create stunning arrangements that fit within your financial plan without compromising on quality.
The Role of Bouquets in Your Wedding
Bouquets are a focal point of your wedding attire. They should reflect your style and enhance the overall aesthetic of your celebration.
Bridal Bouquets
Your bridal bouquet is a statement piece that should complement your dress and overall look. Whether you prefer a cascading arrangement or a more compact posy, our designers can create the perfect bouquet for you.
Bridesmaid Bouquets
Bridesmaid bouquets should harmonize with the bridal bouquet while adding a touch of individuality. Coordinating colors and styles ensure a cohesive look for your wedding party.
Boutonnieres and Corsages
Don't forget about boutonnieres for the groom and groomsmen, and corsages for special family members. These small but significant floral accents add a touch of elegance to their attire.
Enhancing Your Wedding Decor with Flowers
Flowers can transform any wedding venue into a magical setting. From ceremony to reception, here's how to use flowers to enhance your decor.
Ceremony Arrangements
Create a stunning backdrop for your vows with floral archways, aisle decorations, and altar arrangements. These elements set the stage for a memorable ceremony.
Reception Centerpieces
Reception centerpieces are a highlight of your wedding decor. Whether you opt for tall, dramatic arrangements or low, lush designs, centerpieces should reflect your theme and style.
Additional Floral Accents
Consider incorporating flowers into other aspects of your wedding decor, such as cake decorations, chair embellishments, and table runners. These subtle touches add to the overall ambiance of your celebration.

𝐅𝐀𝐌𝐄 𝐃𝐑 𝐔𝐏𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄: 𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐑𝐃 𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐅𝐓
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
𝐓𝐈𝐌𝐄 𝐒𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐈𝐍 𝐃𝐑. 4.5 months 𝐀𝐆𝐄. 26-27 𝐌𝐀𝐈𝐍 𝐅𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐃 𝐆𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐏: timothee chalamet, jenna ortega, billie eilish, amybeth mcnulty 𝐎𝐓𝐇𝐄𝐑 𝐅𝐑𝐈𝐄𝐍𝐃𝐒 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐀𝐑𝐄 𝐂𝐋𝐎𝐒𝐄 𝐓𝐎 𝐌𝐘 𝐇𝐄𝐀𝐑𝐓: pedro pascal, oscar isaac, emma watson, natalie portman, scarlett johansson etc.
𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍𝐒𝐇𝐈𝐏 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐒. single :(
APRIL
well, there was a lot of going on in april :)
first: MY BIRTHDAYYYY i threw the whole party and invited the half of hollywood lmao. There was a lot of my co-stars, artists and singers. I did it like there was no tomorrow, the party was crazy, basically everyone got drunk and sang 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY' like 5 times BUT IT WAS SO COOL UGHHHHH i love them all so so so fucking much. I caan't take it anymore.
I threw the party back in LA, where i was living since my hollywood debut in Ad Astra, but i was planning on moving into NYC fro like a year. SO I DID IT HAHAHAHAHHH it's so cool and i was so excited, but we will move to it later :))
What also happened: PEDRO'S BIRTHDAYYYYY my favourite (okay, he is not the only one BUT STILL) babygirl on earth turned 48 and he invited me to his party which was so COOL!!! idk how will i move on from this, i met BELLA RAMSEY (FINALLY???!?!?!? UGHHH) and met oscar isaac again (for those who don't know, he's my future s/o but it's a long slowburn lmao ✦ he was also my co-star in moon knight, but we knew each other for like a year before this series) after party he took me out to the city, we were talking and walking around LA for HOURS it was so cute he even bought me a rose literally when florist's wanted to close the shop, then we found out paparazzi took a pictures of us there 💀 they are so annoying i swear. but anyway, i had amazing night and oscar made it even better :')
Emma also had her birthday, but i couldn't show up, because of filming 'joker II' with JOAQUIN FUCKING PHEONIX I STILL CANNOT BELIEVE IT. But i sent her birtday present, which was the whole album of photos that i took on my digital camera on our summer & winter holidays - which i thought was super cute :')
April was super productive in a birthday-way as you can see, lmao
But also other super thing happened! Warner Bros. accepted my movie idea and hired me as a director of it. I'M SUPPER EXCITED TO BRING IT TO LIFE UGHHH
MAY
talking, talking & talking about my movie and me as a director - which was super stressfull for me but everything turned out okay! I started writing the script at the end of april, so until i will write it and it gets accepted by Warner Bros. it will take a while for me to cast people :(( but still so excited for it!
and... MY DREAM ABOUT MOVING TO NYC FINALLY CAME TRUE!!!
i bought cute little flat in Manhattan, and started to plan how to move there with all my things. but you know, i didn't sell my old house - no no no. i would never do that, actually. It's the best house in the whole world duhh🙄. I will be still using it!
My friends helped me a lot with planning the whole 'mission' lmao. Shout-out to pedro he told me to move to NYC and live with rats under brooklyn bridge LOL
ANYWAYYY oscar & i met for some coffee instead of actually putting my things into huge boxes for my flat in NYC which was super cute BUT I CAN'T STAND THAT I SCRPITED THE SLOWBURN MAN.
so freaking annoying. why would i do that. AND ANGST which is also annoying
but yup, he helped me a lot, also bc he also lives in new york, so he can help me there :))
(he gives me a little flower everytime we meet, but we are still 'friends' so it should mean nothing BUT IT MEANS SOMETHING TO ME GUYS. it's super super super cute and i wanna hug him so badly, but i am not doing it bc of paparazzi, those rats are following me and oscar literally everywhere 💀)
the whole may was me writing script for a movie, shooting joker II, planning on moving out and meeting oscar just for 'helping me with this nyc thing'
JUNE
'Priscilla' movie with me in main role had its global premiere! I missed this vibe so so so so much, and being on the same red carpet as CILLA PRESLEY had me in tears. i think i've never been more stressed in this dr but she was sooooo kind to me like I CANNOT BELIEVE IT i will have this moment tatooed i swear to god!!!
(i hope this movie will give me an oscar nominee tbh OH WAIT I SCRIPTED IT)
i also got a 2 months break from joker II :) bc they are shooting the scenes without me, so i can finally 'rest' and get my life in new york together
well... beside that, nothing new happened. scripting, FINALLY all my things that i wanted in new york already are there, so week after the movie premiere i moved in :'))
also, i auditioned for some random (lmao) part in new kingsman movie that is in making
from funny things that happened: pedro locked himself in his car LMAO idk how did this happen but he literally called me and oscar to help him before calling the police or smth. HOW COULD YOU LOCK YOURSELF IN YOUR OWN CAR BRO this is too funny to be true. IF YOU COULD SEE OUR FACES
then we grabbed some coffee and went to central park (me and oscar of course were making fun of pedro but who wouldn't)
JULY
I. STILL. DID. NOT. MOVE. ON. FROM. THIS.
my beloved billie want ME to sing with HER on her new single? LIKE WHAT
W H A T
ofc i said yes WHO WOULDN'T
this is ubelievable
i will NEVER shut up about this. we were working on this song for like the whole month, i came back from NYC to LA just to be close to her and finneas, so we would work together in one room, not online. UGHHH I CANNOT BELIEVE IT
❥•°❀°•༢
i had A HUGEEEEEEE break from my fame dr but i am back? and im SO HAPPY? i still cannot believe that i truly was there again ;'(
me in priscilla movie? WHAT
me and billie making song together? WHAT
me and oscar living in new york, so i can see him more? W H A T

the most famous restaurant supply store in manhattan
restaurant supply store au. natasha romanoff* x reader meet-cute. featuring clint, kate, and steve.
i love each and every coffee shop/florist/bookstore au on this website, but why does no one ever write a reader au set in that little restaurant supply store you walk past but never enter???
*nat doesnt come in until the end of the fic but it still counts.
Writing a resume is hard, you admit to yourself, when your current employer could only name his restaurant supply store, located on Canal Street, “Canal Street Restaurant Supply”. Not even a “the” for even an ounce of distinction. Take, for example, “The Ohio State”, “The Metropolitan Museum of Art”, or “The Way You Will Never Pay Off Your Student Loans”. Something with a bit of je ne sais quoi.
Anyways, the dingy pseudo-warehouse you work in has little to offer beyond minimum wage. You can’t even use your very generous five-percent employee discount because, well, if you owned your own restaurant, why would you be working here? On the bright side, though, the shop rarely gets customers. At least, not during the afternoon shift. Most customers pick up their goods in the morning before their restaurants open. The shelves of pots, pans, and teapots collect dust as you surreptitiously mark up your latest resume draft with a red pen.
“Oi, shouldn’t you be dusting the shelves, English?” calls out a voice from the basement. The basement is where they store the big crates of pots of pans that aren’t in the big crates on the shop floor. The basement also houses your boss’s office.
Jimmy, your boss, calls you English because 1) you severely overpaid for a bachelor’s degree in English at NYU and 2) unlike your Chinese-American coworkers, you can only speak your native English.
“I just dusted yesterday!” you shout back. Capping your pen, you slide your redlined resume under a stack of handwritten invoices next to the cash register.
“You should dust every day,” he responds. His neatly brushed black-grey hair pokes its way out of the stacks of bowls lining the shelves. “This place attracts dust like my son attracts unsuitable boyfriends.”
“I think Kevin’s suitors are quite nice,” you say, in defense of your friend.
“Tsk,” Jimmy replies, “Nice to look at maybe. Why can’t he choose someone with a job? Or a nice family?”
You grab the Swiffer from under the desk and get to dusting the teapots, “I don’t know, Mr. Jimmy. Jobs are overrated, I think. Look, I’m dusting a teapot.”
He pauses and straightens the collar of his shirt. “And you dust the teapot very well.”
You nod.
Jimmy clears his throat, “I have to go deliver this shipment of dining plates to a customer this afternoon. Will you be okay here for a few hours while I’m gone?”
You make a point of turning your head and surveying the empty store. You nod.
“Good. Good,” Jimmy says. “Kevin will be by after his shift at the office.”
“Sounds good, Mr. Jimmy.”
“Call me if you need anything!”
You shake your head gently as Jimmy leaves with a heaving crate of plates in his arms. Ever since the Battle of New York, Jimmy has had an irrational fear of the Hulk tearing up his humble restaurant supply store. But things have been calm in this part of the city for years. You think your boss is a bit silly.
You yelp as a spatula nearly misses your head by a few inches. Eyes wide, you look behind you at the metal spatula, vibrating with the impact of impaling your favorite lucky cat statue. Its waving arm had dislocated from its cat-body.
Well, at least it isn’t the Hulk?
Let’s rewind a bit. Not even five minutes after Jimmy left with his delivery, the front door slammed open again. Thinking it was your boss, you poked your head out to look and immediately regretted it. A group of guys, wearing peculiar red tracksuits sped towards you, yelling indecipherable commands. You didn’t even have time to scream before they grabbed you and snarled in your face.
“Where are they?!” one demanded.
“Yeah, bro,” another echoed, “We know that brat is here somewhere.”
“Who the fuck are you talking about?” you yelped, kicking your legs futilely at them.
“The Bishop bitch!” one unhelpfully clarified.
You continued to wriggle helplessly in their grip.
"Wait, bro," one grunted, "Are we on Catherine Street right now?"
You stopped struggling.
The other tracksuit let you go.
"No, bro. The sign says Canal Street," said the first guy.
"Yeah. How do you not know what street you're on, bro? Not very New York of you…"
"Lay off, bro!" exclaimed the confused one, "...I'm from Michigan, bro."
What the fu-
"Hands in air, tracksuits!" yelled a different, younger voice. A girl?
All three bad guys turned towards the new faces. It was a young woman, wearing a lot of purple, and holding… a bow? Next to her, an older blonde man sighed deeply and reached for his utility belt.
From the purple tights and do-gooder attitude of the girl, you clocked the duo as good guys. Avengers? Whatever, you took the moment of distraction to run out of the grasp of the tracksuits.
Luckily for you, they didn't pay you any attention. You managed to escape behind the counter and cower in the space under the register. Unluckily for Jimmy and Canal Street Restaurant Supply, you could hear all of the inventory crashing to the ground and shattering into tiny pieces. You heard the sound of the bad guys grunting in pain and the thwp thwp of arrows finding their marks.
Now, there's a spatula embedded in a poor plastic cat statue. You feel yourself shaking. You duck your head down again and dissociate, probably, while the fighting continues.
Eventually though, sirens come blaring towards you. The only other sound you hear is whispering between the heroes and the pained groans of the, presumably, incapacitated bad guys.
"Hey…" comes the voice of the purple girl, "are you okay? You can come out now."
You warily grab the edge of the counter and pull yourself up. The shop is completely fucked. Porcelain shattered into glitter on the ground. Pans pelleted with arrows. A guy holding his thigh, a puddle of red… Fuck-
The last thing you hear before you black out is a gruff, "Aw no!"
You come to with a jerk. The first thing you hear is your pounding heartbeat echoing in your head. Wait. No, it's coming from around you. A heartbeat monitor. You snap your eyes open and a blinding light glares at you. Your eyes snap shut. You're in a hospital?
"Hey, hey," soothes a raspy voice. It's familiar. "You're okay."
You open your eyes, slowly this time. The light above your bed has been dimmed. You hear your heartbeat slow down.
You turn your head towards the voice, ignoring the throbbing in your skull. A pretty redhead smiles at you.
What the hell is Natasha Romanoff doing in your room?
"Oh, so you do recognize the Avengers," the spy muses, "Clint will be livid. I love it."
Whoops, were you talking out loud??
Natasha Romanoff - The Black Widow - grins at you.
Your hands fly to cover your traitorous mouth. You shut your eyes again in embarrassment. The heartbeat monitor audibly speeds up. You groan loudly, in pain. And in mortification.
"Kill me now," you mutter into your palms.
Warm hands take your hands in hers. You freeze, but Natasha gently peels your palms from your mouth.
"Can't do that, darling. Steve would not approve."
She's teasing you. You nearly pass out, again, at the thought of Steve Rogers knowing who you are anyways.
You slowly sit up, and the other woman helpfully places a pillow behind your back. You thank her and ask, "Is Captain America here?"
"Oh, she knows about Captain America, too."
Despite your hospitalized, traumatized, and increasingly flustered state, you manage to roll your eyes, "Of course I know about Captain America. You can tell Clint Barton he just needs a better marketer, if he wants more attention."
Natasha laughs, looking at you with a fond smile. "I can't say we go looking for attention in this line of work."
You shake your head dumbly. She laughs again and you feel your breath catch. Actually wait-
The infamous Black Widow barely has time to shove a pan under your chin before you lose the contents of your stomach. And the last of your dignity.
At that moment, Steve Rogers sticks his head into the room, but immediately backs away at the scene. "I'll, uh, give you two ladies another few minutes then…"
You groan. What a terrible day.
Natasha Romanoff pats your back and hands you a tissue.
Well, you suppose, it could be worse.
Your phone lights up with a call. It's Jimmy.

Expert Tips from Manhattan Florists on Choosing Perfect Bouquets
Tumblr media
Planning the perfect event or wedding often involves selecting the finest floral arrangements. Whether you are an event planner, a bride-to-be, or simply a flower enthusiast, these expert tips from Manhattan florists Manhattan will help you create stunning bouquets that enhance your special day.
Understand the Significance of Seasonality
Choosing flowers that are in season not only ensures that they are fresh and vibrant, but also more cost-effective. For example:
Spring Weddings: Opt for tulips, peonies, and ranunculus, which symbolize new beginnings and bring a burst of color to your event.
Summer Soirees: Consider sunflowers, dahlias, and lilies to capture the essence of summer with their bold and bright hues.
Fall Foliage: Incorporate chrysanthemums, marigolds, and asters to reflect the rich, warm tones of autumn.
Selecting the Right Color Palette
Your floral arrangements should complement the theme of your event and personal style. Keep these tips in mind:
Match the Theme: For a classic wedding, go for white roses and lilies. For a rustic vibe, sunflowers paired with greenery work beautifully.
Personal Style: If you love vibrant colors, mix and match shades like fuchsia, orange, and yellow. For a more subdued look, pastels like blush, lavender, and light blue are perfect.
Balancing Fragrance, Texture, and Size
Creating a harmonious bouquet involves balancing different elements. Here’s how:
Fragrance: While fragrant flowers like gardenias and jasmine are pleasant, avoid overpowering scents that could be overwhelming for guests.
Texture: Combine different textures—pair soft blooms like peonies with structured flowers like calla lilies for visual interest.
Size: Choose a mix of large focal flowers and smaller filler flowers to add depth and dimension to your bouquet.
Consider the Venue and the Season
The location and time of year play a crucial role in your floral selection:
Indoor Venues: Opt for flowers that can withstand varying temperatures and less sunlight. Orchids and hydrangeas are great choices.
Outdoor Venues: Hardy flowers like zinnias and dahlias are perfect for outdoor events, as they can endure sun and wind.
Seasonal Considerations: In colder months, choose blooms that are resilient to frost, such as amaryllis and holly.
Incorporate Local, Sustainable Blooms
Supporting local florists and choosing sustainable options benefits both the environment and your event:
Local Blooms: Seasonal, locally-sourced flowers are fresher and often more affordable. Check with your florist about what’s available.
Sustainable Choices: Opt for organic, pesticide-free flowers to ensure an eco-friendly event. This choice also supports local farmers and reduces your carbon footprint.
Unique, Personalized Touches
Add a personal touch to your floral arrangements with these suggestions:
Personal Mementos: Incorporate family heirlooms or meaningful charms into your bouquet for a sentimental element.
Custom Arrangements: Work with your florist to create bespoke arrangements that reflect your unique story and style.
Unusual Flowers: Stand out by choosing less common flowers like proteas or anemones for a distinctive look.
Incorporating these tips from top florist Manhattan will ensure your bouquets are not only beautiful but also perfectly suited to your event. Ready to make your floral dreams come true? Book a consultation with our expert florists today and start planning your stunning arrangements.

A Bouquet For The Dead
“Anyways,” Albert says, no doubt in an attempt to change the subject. “Katherine was telling us about the Refuge, that old haunted orphanage. What if we lived out our high school fantasies and went—” he pointed a flashlight on his chin and spoke in a deep voice, “—ghost hunting!” Everyone laughs at the absurd idea. After all, they think, ghosts aren’t real, right?
I wrote this for @smallsies for the @seizethefanfics winter gift exchange
Content warning: death and violence
Thank you to all of my friends who gave me feedback!
ao3
Very few people visit a flower shop on a Monday afternoon, so Albert is watering the plants on display. It’s mostly quiet at this time of day, within the place he owns with his longtime boyfriend Finch and their best friend known as Race. A familiar face enters.
“Oh, Katherine. It’s you,” says Race. Kath is a frequent visitor to Manhattan Florists;she comes so often she’s becoming a friend, although they'd never admit it.
“Hi! The newspaper has been absolutely crazy lately with some reports of disturbances in the area near that abandoned orphanage where many children died back in the late 1800s…” Albert turns his focus to Finch, who is looking distraught.
“Are you okay?” he asks, throwing his arm around his partner.
“Yeah, I’m fine,” Finch replies. “It’s just that orphanage and all of those dead kids…I just hope that someone remembers them.” Katherine leaves after buying her bouquet and the trio decide to take their lunch break.
--
“Do you remember us in the ninth grade? We all wanted to be ghost hunters,” Finch remarks while playing with Albert’s hair. Race laughs.
“I remember ninth grade! You two were so in denial about being soulmates for each other, but here you are. Still the same losers, just out of the closet,” Albert laughs.
“You’re one to talk! Even after transitioning, you still tell people to call you Racetrack!” Race throws his hat at Albert.
--
After the last customer leaves, the trio is almost prepared to leave. Race has an outrageous proposition.
“So, do you guys actually want to go ghost hunting in that old orphanage?” Before they can say anything, he starts defending himself. “Yeah, I know that we’re actual adults now, but hey it might be fun! We might as well live out our teenage dreams on a Monday night.”
“Definitely,” says Albert. He looks over at Finch after he says it. He doesn’t want the sadness from earlier this morning to reappear.
“Sure. Why not?” Finch says, much to Albert’s surprise.
“I’ll grab flashlights,” says Race as he runs to the storage room.
“Can I kiss you?” Albert asks once Race is out of sight. Finch nods. For a few seconds it’s just them together and everything seems alright in the world.
“Sorry to interrupt, lover boys; but, I found the flashlights.” Race has a shit-eating grin on his face and Albert’s face turns redder than his hair.
“I still need to grab something.” Finch procures a bouquet from behind the desk.
“What’s it for?” asks Race. Finch looks solemn.
“It’s a bouquet for the dead. I’m sure that most of those orphans didn’t get gravestones, so this is my way of honoring them since no one else would.” There’s a brief silence until he says that he’s ready to go if everyone else is. And so the ghost hunting begins.
--
“Wait, I think I forgot my phone,” exclaims Race when the three of them are halfway to the Refuge. Finch and Albert check their pockets. All of them left their phones back at the shop. “I guess it doesn’t matter. We’re going back to the shop later and we’re not exactly going to die in an abandoned building.” No one laughs at his half-hearted attempt at a joke. Albert grips his flashlight a little tighter.
“I did a bit more research on the Refuge after lunch,” Finch announces. “It opened in the late 1800s and it ran until 1899. At that point the residents had been dying from neglect and one day the warden of it–someone named Snyder–mysteriously died and it shut down.” Albert stops in his tracks.
“That’s seriously messed up.”
“It is,” agrees Race.
“Let’s keep walking. We’re almost there and it’s getting darker out.” Finch is a few steps ahead of both of them. Suddenly, they see a decrepit building ahead of them and they know that they’ve found their destination.
The building looks even worse once they’re closer. Only some of the windows are boarded up and a few are broken. They soon realize that the door is closed but not locked. Finch places his bouquet near the door and then slips his hand into Albert’s, and they go inside.
--
“Hi, ghosts! We’re right here!” exclaims Race once he’s inside the entryway.
“We want to meet you!” yells Albert while holding his flashlight in a death grip.
“I’m sorry that you’re dead!” says Finch with a bit less zeal.
The trio wanders around for a bit, trying to ignore their gut instincts to leave. Eventually, they stumble upon what was probably a dining room once upon a time.
“How many people do you think lived here?” Albert asks.
“More like how many people do you think died here?” Finch contradicts. “You also see how many of these chairs are crowded together. It wouldn’t have taken a lot for diseases to spread.”
Suddenly, two windows open all on their own and the wind comes barreling through and the cold seeps into the bones of Albert, Finch, and Race.
“Do you think that the ghosts opened those windows?” jokes Race even though his hands are clearly shaking.
“It’s weird but maybe it was the wind? And it is an old building–” Finch and Race raise their eyebrows at Albert. “Never mind, I’ll just go with ghosts. We are ghost hunters after all,” says Albert, but his voice is shaky.
The three friends march on while holding hands and white-knuckling their flashlights. Eventually, they stumble upon what must have been the sleeping quarters. There are rows upon rows of tiny beds with moth-eaten mattresses. They try not to think about what the old stains are and how the floorboards are just a bit too worn out to be safe. It smells of death and decay, lost dreams and hopeless nights. For a second, it feels like they lived here in a past life. That feeling soon fades. The floorboards creak, but they’re not walking around. Everyone is anxious, but no one will admit it. Albert starts to pace back and forth and he sees something out of the corner of his eye.
“Race, Finch, come over here,” he says quietly. The two of them obey. Finch gasps. They all see a crutch. It’s broken, and even though over a hundred years have passed, there’s still an unmistakable substance on the rotting wood.
“Is that….blood?” asks Finch with a quivering voice. No one answers, but they were all thinking the same thing. grips Albert’s hand and closes his eyes in the hopes that it will be gone when he opens them, but it’s still there.
All of a sudden, a broken window opens and the cold wind fills the room. All three of them scream. Under his breath, Finch whispers that he wishes he never came here. Against his better judgment, Race wanders over to another bed. He finds a faded drawing on old paper, but he can still make out the meaning; the terrible conditions of this place back when it had living inhabitants. Finch and Albert squeeze each other’s hands. Race picks up the drawing and then–
“Hey, don’t touch that,” exclaim mysterious voices behind them. Race, Al, and Finch turn around and are absolutely petrified. They see two figures. One of them has an old-fashioned hat and a very wrinkled blue shirt and vest. The other is wearing the tattered remains of a shirt and picks up the broken crutch.
“Is this real?” whispers Finch.
“I’m Jack, this is Crutchie. We’re as real as you,” says the taller figure.
“Are you ghosts?” asks Race, even though he thinks he knows the answer.
“No, we just happened to still live here after 123 years,” Crutchie rolls his eyes. “Of course we’re ghosts.”
“So ghosts are real. My entire life is a lie. Ok then-” Race is quickly interrupted by Albert.
“So how did you two die?” Finch gives his partner a look.
“I don’t think you can just ask them how they died-”
“It’s fine,” Jack interjects. “Snyder the Spider used to run this place. He’d let vermin run all over and wouldn’t give us medicine when we were sick. We got sick a lot. There were three of us to a bed. That big dining room that you walked through earlier? It’s just for show. Crutchie and I starved to death like most of the others.”
“There are others like us. Ghosts. We don’t like showing our faces to outsiders for the most part,” explains Crutchie.
“How many others are there?” Race asks while looking around the chilly room.
“Eh, around 30. Including Snyder, but he hasn’t shown his face for a while,” says Jack.
“And sorry about spooking you with the windows in here, but since there’s always a chance that Snyder could come back, it’s not really safe for the living to be here,” Crutchie chimes in. “I think Specs was the one who spooked you in the dining room.” The floorboards start creaking, as if someone was anxiously jumping up and down. “Elmer doesn’t want to show himself, but he wants you to leave. We don’t want to accidentally bring back Snyder. He can’t kill us anymore but that doesn’t mean we don’t feel pain.” Finch checks his watch.
“He’s right. We should be going. It’s getting late.” Albert nods.
“Wait, what’s down that hallway?” Race walks out of the room and through several other identical ones and then he reaches a hallway with a singular door at the end of it.
“Don’t go down there,” yells Jack. “That’s Snyder’s office. That where I–” Jack cuts himself off.
“That’s where what?” Finch asks that question even though he already knows the answer.
“That’s where I…..that’s where I killed him,” Jack replies slowly. “I had died a few days before and I realized that I would be stuck here forever. I saw him bribe an inspector to not shut this place down. I couldn’t take it anymore so I grabbed a knife from the dining room and barged into his office and……” Jack trails off, but everyone understands what he means. Nobody blames him.
Race is becoming more and more uncomfortable in his surroundings. He doesn’t want to accidentally awake a murderous ghost, and he can see how Albert is shifting from side to side and clearly uncomfortable as well. In an attempt to slowly leave the corridor without seeming rude, Race takes a step to the side and accidentally trips over rat bones that have been sitting there for over a hundred years. He tries to grab on to something, anything, so that he doesn’t fall through floorboards that are one moment away from breaking. He reaches for something. Unfortunately, that something is the doorknob for the entrance to Snyder’s resting place. Jack helps him to his feet when they hear noises coming from inside the office.
“WHICH ONE OF YOU USELESS ORPHANS STOPPED ME FROM RESTING IN PEACE?” The door bursts open- and out comes Snyder in all his ghostly presence. He towers over all of them. There’s rage in his eyes and pure evil in his heart. He looks like a man who wants them dead so that he won’t be the only one who has to suffer in this pathetic excuse for an afterlife. “I’M GOING TO KILL WHOEVER DID THIS!”
Jack, Crutchie, Albert, Finch, and Race start running with Snyder chasing behind. They run from room to room and eventually end up back in the first room with places to conceal themselves. They never should have done this, Albert thinks. They might die, all because they wanted to be stupid ghost hunters. Some dreams are best left in high school before they turn into nightmares. They hide under beds and hope that their enemy won’t hear them crying. Some of Jack and Crutchie’s old friends make themselves visible and hit him however they can. Snyder hasn’t reappeared since 2012 and they’re desperate for revenge. Jack silently gestures for the trio to go. They’ll have a head start and maybe they can make it out of there alive.
The trio make their way to the dining room. They’re almost out of this awful place. They’ll be free if they can run for just a bit longer. Finch and Albert are almost at the door, Race lagging behind. He’s almost free when Snyder catches up with him. He’s grabbed a knife. The very same one that Jack stabbed Snyder with back in 1899. Jack knows what’s going to happen before it does. He closes the door on them. Race screams. He never thought that his friends would leave him behind. Maybe he can’t stop Race from dying, but he can save Albert and Finch. Snyder stabs Race five times before he falls down. Lying in a pool of his own blood, he tries to say his final words, but he’s choking on his blood. He stops coughing at the same time that his heart stops beating.
--
Time both stopped and sped up. Albert and Finch scream louder than they ever have. They have to see their best friend die right in front of them and they’re helpless. Completely helpless. There’s blood on his face where there used to be a smile. Their friend who was always so full of life is now nothing more than a wilted flower on rotten wood. Jack begs them to leave. There’s nothing they can do. They wanted to become ghost hunters, not have their best friend be hunted. Eventually, the two lovers walk away from the house. They’re in shock until Finch trips over the bouquet that he brought. Then they start to feel the weight of everything that has happened and they collapse on the ground, holding each other and sobbing.
