Hey 👋 I saw recently Manilla is set to become the Broadway of the Philippines!! That's so neat! I hope you're still blogging when that happens! You're the closest thing I have to 'a friend in the Philippines,' so I gotta ask, whats the arts scene like now over there?
I may be slightly biased because I got my first screenwriting credit here, writing a script for this this AirAsia commercial directed by Filipino director Ray Ambler Baguilat, whom I met by chance here in Baguio at a local coworking hub (I had no idea who he was until he asked me to write a script lol), but I'd say the arts are pretty big here. My wife @thesurestthing does the woman's voice in the commercial, too!
There are thriving writing communities (both English-language and Filipino-language) in the Manila area (aka National Capital Region) and Baguio (and I assume in other places, as well), and Baguio, where we live, is recognized by UNESCO for being artsy af. There's also quite the music scene, and a lot of folks are making a concerted effort to promote Pinoy artists of all stripes.
All in all, I expect the Philippines to become more well-known for the arts in coming years--I mean, there's recently even been a P-Pop band in the US Billboard charts! And FilAms (like Olivia Rodrigo, Dave Bautista, Nicole Scherzinger, Vanessa Hudgens, Josh Dela Cruz, Bruno Mars, Enrique Iglesias, Manny Jacinto, and plenty more) have been making waves for years, as well.
Also, in the Philippines, nearly everybody sings, and most people I know play at least one instrument. It's not like in the states, where people get embarrassed to be "caught" singing--it's just a part of daily life here.

Thame Po EP 11 Review
This week's episode is too much to process, but I wanted to write this now since I will be attending the DAY6 concert in Manila later (by the time this will be posted), and the rest of the days would be too busy to get this review done. I will be making this quick, so I will be talking in bullet points.
The first scene was still weird to me especially it was not explained: Thame is with Po in the sandwich shop while fans of MARS were just on the other table, then the fans are nowhere to be seen anymore. Despite this, I love how they portrayed romance through words and actions without saying "I love you" out loud. The show is doing a great job finding something remarkable about the mundane.
Pemika finally reveals to Po what led her to post Pepper and Gam's photos. I expected this to happen, since I knew that Thame would not really fold into her tactics anymore. The way she led Po into thinking that it was his fault up until the way she planted the seed in Po's mind, this showed how cunning Pemika is, and how compelling her character is in not just testing Thame and Mars' character, but also Po's.
The breakup scene in the rooftop up until the moment they went back to their respective homes is beautifully shot and acted. I don't have much to say, but I love Thame and Po's dialogue here. This part highlighted Thame's self-sacrificing quality. He has always been defying all odds to make everything happen--from reuniting the group to making his relationship with Po work. Po, on the other hand, perfectly depicted the sense of defeat and resignation in his expression. This scene also ultimately circles back to episode 1, where they both stand on opposite poles in the notion of leaving and being left. Now, the roles got reversed, with Po leaving and Thame being left.
I was in complete shock with how the Korea thing with the group turned out and how it unfolded. Pemika stretched out her dirty game by pulling such a stunt, which left the whole group disappointed and in disbelief. Now, the group lost their hopes and this doubled down on Thame's (and even Pepper's) loss. I was not quite sure, though, what I would feel with the way this was written. While it is intriguing and complicated for the story of the group, I do not think we have that much time to resolve and bring them back together again, unless we pull off another one-hour long episode. I also thought that we have not seen them talk as a group about what MARS meant for them, so I hope we get that at least, just to wrap their story up.
The montage of everyone achieving what they want (except Thame) is bittersweet. I felt that for the group, there is a lingering tension and sadness that is yet to unfold as they achieve success individually and not as a group. While what Pemika said about how the whole ordeal turned out was a bit moving, I believe that each member of the group still holds the memory of MARS as something precious for them. The sour orange tree still stands with their wishes, and part of it is Thame's wish to make everyone's wish come true. It became true for all of them and Thame indeed made that happen, but at what cost?
For Po, he gets recognized by being promoted, but we could feel that he is left wanting in the end to share this milestone to Thame, the one he used to cherish. I think this is a nice shift in Po's character, that we sublty get a hint of Po letting go of his tendency to put his value towards his capabilities and not with who he is as a person.
The end scene where Thame shopped for Po's groceries in advance quite devastated me in a way that's different from their breakup. At the moment, Thame had his fervent wish to be part of Po's life forever, and he already had this vision of living and loving him everyday. The late parcel with the note perfectly captured the feeling of regret that Po feels at the moment in his relationship.
This episode is longer than usual and is a lot to process, since they chose to condense a lot of plot points. While I think that overall it was a great episode, I just thought that they could have had the breakup be the sole focus of the whole episode. They could have focused more on how the two coped with the breakup.
I would like to point out that the first scene with the jacket was a nice setup and foreshadow on the next episode. I hope I am right with how it would turn out.

Tomorrow X Together concludes tour with fun, fiery PH concert
MANILA — The production for Tomorrow X Together’s (TXT) recent concert at the Philippine Arena was nothing short of grand. Pyrotechnics, bursts of confetti and eye-catching backdrops complemented the song-and-dance numbers for a potent feast for the senses.
But more than these embellishments, it was the lighthearted interactions shared by the K-pop stars and their fans that made the concert a truly unforgettable experience.
Donning princely costumes, Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun and Huening Kai kicked off the evening — the final show for their second world tour “Act: Sweet Mirage” — with a “dance break version” of the euphoric disco single “Blue Hour.” The boys spared no time in getting close to the fans, moving towards the B-stage halfway through the song.
“We’re so happy we can spend time with MOA in Bulacan this year following last year’s concert in Manila. Na-miss namin kayo (We missed you),” Beomgyu said, drawing loud cheers from fans called MOA.
He was referring to TXT’s two-night concert at the Mall of Asia Arena last October 2022, which also marked the final stop of the group’s first tour “Act: Lovesick.”
The 26-piece setlist for “Act: Sweet Mirage” incorporated songs that the boys performed in “Act: Lovesick,” but also drew from TXT’s extensive catalog to include newer performances. It also covered all of the tracks from the extended play “The Name Chapter: Temptation,” the group’s only Korean release in between the two world tours.
After removing their tops onstage to reveal more casual and colorful shirts, the boys continued to dish out fun and catchy tracks, such as “No Rules,” “Cat & Dog” and “9 And Three Quarters (Run Away).”
The group also brought angsty punk and pop-rock offerings “0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You),” “LO$ER=LO♡ER,” and “Dear Sputnik,” and boasted its members’ dreamy vocals in “Anti-Romantic.”
In the genre-shifting “Eternally” — which remained a concert highlight in “Act: Sweet Mirage” despite having been performed in the previous tour — white and blue lights surrounded the boys as they delivered the soothing verses. But the moment the song swerves into its throbbing electro sections, the scene turned just as menacing, amplified by red lights and flames bursting from the stage’s front.
Filipino fans were also treated to a performance of “Do It Like That,” the group’s collaboration single with the Jonas Brothers released just last month.
During the encore, the quintet sang “Blue Spring,” an unreleased song dedicated to MOAs, and capped the show with a surprise performance of fan song “MOA Diary.”
Fan interactions
The Philippine leg of “Act: Sweet Mirage” — which ran for more than three hours and was produced by Live Nation Philippines — was also a testament of TXT’s growth as entertainers. Compared to the previous concert, the members seemed more confident onstage, not only in their performances but also through their interactions with the crowd.
Concerts have always been a way for K-pop stars to strengthen their bonds with their dedicated fan bases and TXT’s show was no different, featuring engaging talk segments that displayed the boys’ cute and goofy sides.
After “Cat & Dog,” which had the crowd barking, the members gave their own canine impressions. They later whipped out their lightsticks and each took turns in leading the audience to doing playful movements.
Before performing “Happy Fools,” the group also taught the song’s choreography and asked audience members to do the dance challenge, which were flashed on the venue’s big screens.
The Bulacan show also took place a day (or just mere hours) before Huening Kai marked his 21st birthday. As a surprise, the crowd chanted his name during “Dear Sputnik” and joined his bandmates in singing to him near the end of the concert.
“Actually, it’s on my wishlist, to have my birthday and concert happen on the same day,” Huening Kai said.
‘Beautiful’ last concert
As the night drew to a close, the boys thanked fans for making the final stop of their tour a memorable one. “Thank you so much for decorating our last concert this beautifully and to the point that we were able to finish this concert very well,” Yeonjun said.
“Last year, we were able to receive a lot of comfort and love from you guys. I’m so thankful that even today as well, you were able to give us a lot of comfort and love,” Beomgyu said.
Taehyun said the local crowd was “the best [in] singing, dancing, cheering and screaming for us,” adding that he was already looking forward to the group’s next performance in the country.
“‘Act: Sweet Mirage’ in Bulacan ends here but we will come back [for] MOA again to show you how much we have grown with the love that we received so please wait for us,” Soobin said.

The Lantern in the Fog Inspired by The Catcher in the Rye
Chapter One: The Exit Wound
If you really want to hear about it, you should probably know I’m not the kind of person who makes a scene. At least not on purpose. But there’s something about getting expelled—again—that makes people look at you like you set a fire just to watch it burn.
Technically, I wasn’t expelled. Ms. White, the head of Briarhall Prep, called it a “temporary suspension pending review,” which is just the school’s way of saying, We’re tired of you, Samira Elwood, and your smart mouth, and your vanishing acts. I didn’t argue. I just nodded while she talked. Something about “academic dishonesty,” which is rich coming from a school that sells legacy admissions like concert tickets.
It wasn’t even that serious. I skipped the winter reflection retreat to take a train into New York and see an art exhibit on grief. I wrote a paper about it—an actual, honest-to-God, cited and footnoted analysis of visual mourning through abstract composition. But apparently, going off-campus without permission and “failing to inform school officials of your whereabouts” is cause for parental alert and disciplinary action.
“I’m disappointed in you, Sam,” Ms. White had said, pressing her lips together like she was trying to keep her own soul from leaking out. “Guess that makes two of us,” I said. She didn’t laugh. Not even a pity chuckle. Just handed me a manila envelope and told me to pack my things. And that’s how I found myself sitting on the cracked bench outside Briarhall’s gate with a duffel bag, my sketchbook, and no real intention of going home.
Home was D.C. Home was my mom walking around like a ghost in her own house, pretending to be okay. Home was Eli’s bedroom door, still shut. Still untouched. Instead, I took out my phone and opened the train schedule. Boston. Eli had wanted to go there. Science museums, bookstores, the aquarium. It was as good a direction as any. I bought the ticket, told no-one, and just left.
