Feelings: A Story in Seasons by Manjit Thapp 4/5 stars | 📖 | Read 6/27, 2023

While this read may be short and sweet, don’t let that deceive you about the depth it offers. This visually-stunning memoir in graphic novel form details Thapp’s changing relationship with her mental health through the seasons. From feeling invincible during the early days of summer to feeling her most depressed at wintertime, Thapp is candid but concise about how her moods reflect and are shaped by the seasonal changes.

I read this book in one sitting before bed, and it offered such comfort. Flipping page after page, I was amazed by Thapp’s vibrant art style and poignant insights into her mental health. I felt many of my own experiences reflected in Thapp’s anxieties about wasting summer or her feelings of growing loneliness as the leaves change color in autumn. My favorite line came in the final chapter about how feelings of hope re-emerge as winter gives way to spring: “I persevered through bitter storms so when they come back around, I’ll be ready for them.” This sums up the message of the book very well— how hope always returns and that our past struggles and experiences prepare us to get through the future challenges. While this book stays on the simpler side, it doesn’t take away from its impact and allows the art to deservingly take center stage.

To really highlight his influence on the series, Under the Bridge producers close the gap in one of the final scenes: As Virk’s parents sit on their daughter’s bed, they look at her CD player and hit play. They listen closely — her mother taking in Biggie’s lyrics and her father dancing to the beat. 

The vision of Virk was in the book, but Mehta — who wrote the final episode — says they added the Biggie element “to complete the arc of the Virk parents.”

“That moment was really supposed to be crossing that generational gap where the parents sat down and for the first time, sadly after she passed, decided, ‘Let me try to consider what her interests were and let me be a little more open-minded toward the thing that I rejected a few months ago,"

Manjit Thapp is staring at “The World of Bridgerton” puzzle. It’s been a while since the artist and illustrator created the image, which features 30 characters from the Bridgerton series in an extravagant ballroom scene that, in 1,000 pieces, captures the lush essence of the hit Shondaland and Netflix series.
