If I’m interested in learning more about Pope John Paul II, do you have any good book recs? Love both of your blogs by the way!!
Thank you! I’m sorry that I didn’t see this question earlier; I always tend to overlook the papal blog because I’m so terrible at updating it.
There are tons of books about Pope John Paul II, so I’ll try to narrow the suggestions down to a handful:
•George Weigel’s two-volume biography of John Paul II is almost certainly the best-known and definitive studies of John Paul II’s life from Poland to the Vatican. The first volume, Witness to Hope: The Biography of Pope John Paul II (BOOK | KINDLE), was originally published in 1999 and tracks the Polish Pope from birth until the turn of the millennium.
The second volume of Weigel’s biography, The End and the Beginning: Pope John Paul II -- The Victory of Freedom, the Last Years, the Legacy (BOOK | KINDLE), was published in 2010 and devotes almost the entire first half of the book to an in-depth look at John Paul II’s lifelong crusade against Communism. The other half of the book focuses on the Pope’s final years as his health began to fail and as he seemingly used his very public physical deterioration as a lesson in suffering, humility, and strength until his death in April 2005.
In 2017, Weigel published another book -- Lessons In Hope: My Unexpected Life with St. John Paul II (BOOK | KINDLE) -- which isn’t a traditional biography, but a much more personal book about Weigel’s journey as the Pope’s biographer and his relationship with John Paul II over the years. It’s unique compared to his formal biographies because it shows John Paul II from a different, more human perspective than that of the infallible “Keeper of the Keys to Heaven”.
Some of the other books that I’ll suggest are very good, but they can also feel incomplete because John Paul II’s papacy lasted so long that the authors were only able to capture certain parts of his reign.
•His Holiness: John Paul II and the Hidden History of Our Time (BOOK | Kindle not available) by Carl Bernstein and Marco Politi is one of those books that is solid but not a complete history of the Pope’s reign because it was published in 1996, nearly 10 years before John Paul II’s death. And, yes, the co-author is the Carl Bernstein of Washington Post/Watergate/All the President’s Men/Woodward & Bernstein fame.
•John Paul the Great: Remembering a Spiritual Father (BOOK | Kindle not available) by former Ronald Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan was published shortly after John Paul II’s death in 2005 and is excellent. Noonan’s book is also very personal to the author and paints a portrait of John Paul II that helps us understand what he meant to so many people. Noonan also helps explain the source of the Pope’s unique charisma and how he used his immense natural political gifts to reach his audiences.
•The Pontiff In Winter: Triumph and Conflict in the Reign of John Paul II (BOOK | KINDLE) by John Cornwell is not the most flattering book about Pope John Paul II, but it is an important book to get a balanced understanding of his life and of the health of the Catholic Church towards the end of John Paul II’s papacy. Cornwell has long been one of the best connected Vatican journalists and this book is important because it questions how much blame should have or could have been placed on John Paul II for the scandals and corruption that simmered below the surface inside the Vatican throughout his reign.
•John Paul II: My Beloved Predecessor (BOOK | Kindle not available) is a short collection of writings and homilies by Pope Benedict XVI that he wrote about John Paul II over the years -- as Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger while John Paul II was alive, and as Benedict XVI after succeeding John Paul II in 2005. There’s nothing earth-shattering in the book, but it’s an interesting look at one Pope directly from the pen of another Pope.
•The last recommendation isn’t a book about Pope John Paul II, but a book written by John Paul II: The Place Within: The Poetry of Pope John Paul II (BOOK | Kindle not available). This book of poetry written by John Paul II at various points throughout his long life is an incredibly unique window into the soul of a Pope. Some of the poems -- which are translated into English from John Paul II’s native language of Polish by Jerzy Peterkiewicz -- are quite good! Like I said, it’s not a biography of John Paul II, but in many ways reading his poetry can be just as revealing.

Faith, Power, Manipulation - The Secrets of the Opus Dei sect | DW Documentary
For many critics, the arch-conservative Catholic community Opus Dei is a diabolical sect. However, Opus Dei (which translates to "Work of God”) sees itself in a very positive light. Even today, it’s very difficult to look into the inner world of the sect.
That's because its 90,000 members worldwide have taken a vow of secrecy - and those who have left report persecution if they break that vow. Meanwhile, Opus Dei is working to become the most influential player in the Catholic Church. To this end, it maintains a secret network - including branches in Germany.
It is no coincidence that the German headquarters are located in Cologne - Germany‘s most powerful Catholic archdiocese. In Germany, Opus Dei is focused on trying to gain a foothold in the field of education, by running daycare centers and schools.
The examination of a daycare center in Munich shows that Opus Dei deliberately conceals its involvement in these institutions. Another component of the network is IESE, the business school of Opus Dei, which also has an offshoot in Germany. It is considered one of the best schools of its kind in the world.
In Spain, where Opus Dei originated, sect members are active in parts of the judicial and educational sectors. The documentary tries to uncover these connections in both Spain and Germany, and lets both victims and experts have their say. It also includes an interview with the head of Opus Dei, Christoph Bockamp.
For the first time, a former member from Germany reports on her ordeal in Opus Dei and the harassment she experienced after she broke away from the sect. Spaniard Carmen Charo developed mental health problems during her time in Opus Dei, due to brainwashing and psychological pressure. Today, she helps others in their journey out of Opus Dei.
Dietmar Scharmitzer is trying to do the same thing with German-speaking people who want to leave, and runs an Internet platform to help inform them. Finally, Marco Politi, an author and Vatican expert from Rome, takes stock of the influence Opus Dei has exerted since the time of Pope John Paul II.

Hey there, Filipino anon here! I'm a little curious about the name you chose for your 2P!Philippines, since while it's true that the maharlika refers to a specific class in some precolonial polities, the word is also very tied with Marcos and martial law-era propaganda (especially with the whole controversy around the 'Maharlika Kingdom', which is a creation used to justify the Marcos family's ill-gotten wealth). I wanted to make sure you were aware of this, or if there was any other justification you had for the name you chose.
[Okay so saw this so had to clear it out, and speaking as I'm also Filipino so, hello kabayan]
[Mahárlika was a name that I chose because one, the name sounded cool, and two the meaning behind the word was something that caught my eye. While doing research I did notice the mention of Marcos using this term in his reign although I would never intend for the 2P to represent the martial law era]
[The term can mean freeman, that's why I chose that for his name. But like most good things, people can modify things to fit their twisted mindsets— so I guess you helped me come up with lore now, lol]
[So yeah I'm aware, but also clearing it out, Mahárlika has nothing to do with the Marcos Marshal Law era, he represents the Katipunan to be more accurate so I guess let's say his name was twisted into something that was once a symbol of strength and freedom into this. Much like the instance of the swastika once being a symbol of spiritualism and good luck now ruined by the appropriation of the Nazi party]

Just as all creativity is a work-in-progress, so are all creators. For adidas Originals' FW18 campaign, we launched a film that was itself a work-in-progress. Every scene, unfinished. Every creator, in a constant state of beta. Coopting the digital loading symbols of our hyperconnected consumer to inspire them to keep pushing on — but to recognize no matter where the work ends, original is never finished.

“The Pope’s Worst Nightmare”: Chapter 3 of ‘The Pope, His Chamberlain, the Jinetera & Fidel’
Protestors against the Pinochet regime during the Pope’s Mass in Chile’s main soccer stadium
Comment
This is one of the chapters with firm grounding in reality. The pope’s nightmare is based on the report of what happened during his 1987 trip to Chile. In their biography (His Holiness: John Paul and the hidden history of our time) Carl Bernstein and Marco Politi described the papal Mass in the…

Myth
Myth:
Greek muō [or myō] = “ I have my mouth closed” or “I have my eyes closed” in everyday situation, but also “I say in a special way” or “I see in a special way”, in the context of ritual. From the latter meaning, mustēs [or mystēs], “one who is initiated”, and mustērion [mystērion], “That in which one is initiated, a mystery”.
Muthos [mythos], “myth”, derives from the same root, and can mean “special speech” as opposed to ‘everyday speech”
[Gregory Nagy, “Early Greek views of poets and poetry”, in The Cambridge History of Literary Criticism, Vol. 1 Classical Criticism, ed. by George A. Kennedy (Cambridge: Cambridge UP, 1989), p. 3]
The concept of myth is initially linked to that of ritual.
In pan-Hellenic society, the poet / singer travels from city to city and is exposed to variant myths in different communities; myth becomes detached from ritual, and the concepts of myth and truth (alētheia) also diverge: what can be accepted as genuine (etumon / etymon) in one city may be seen as fallacy or lie (pseudos) in another.
The word “myth”, which initially stood for truth-values related to rituals, acquires the meaning of what is variable, has local meaning, what has to change in the singer’s repertoire as he moves from one community to another; the singer will select those aspects of myth that are common to all places he visits. (Nagy, pp. 29-30)
