An Evening with Nairy Baghramian
The Italian artist Maria Monaci Gallenga began creating artistic dress for herself around 1910. This clothing followed a value system that emphasized craftsmanship and the pleasure of making, production methods based on historical techniques, and referenced past modes of dress such as Medieval and Renaissance fashions. Her clothing was created in close collaboration with a seamstress who would…

Victoria Morelli (1892-1931) pintora italiana.
Tumblr media

This translation abriged from “Moda: Dalla nascita della haute couture a oggi” by Sofia Gnoli, Carocci Editore, Roma 2012
The Origins of Italian Fashion examines the history of Italian fashion from the beginning of the twentieth century, when the Lombard tailor Rosa Genoni created the first Italian fashion house independent from the prevailing French style, to World War II, when the Fascist regime co-opted fashion as a propaganda tool. Illustrated with archive material from the designers and the earliest Italian fashion magazines, this book concentrates on the most important designers from the early years of Italian fashion. From Gabriella di Robilant, the Italian 'inventor' of sportswear fashion, to Salvatore Ferragamo and his famous orthopaedic shoes, to Elsa Schiaparelli, the first great protagonist of Italian style, these designers' influence continues to be felt today.

Could you do a gown for Mario Ferraro?
Mario Ferraro
Tumblr media
I spent this weekend shopping for sleeveless muscle tees with my sister, because that’s the sort of person we are. I gotta figure out where Mario shops.
But, while physically he may be contained within a lot of white tank tops, I believe on a spiritual level he is already wearing this black and teal velvet tea gown with medieval swallowtail sleeves, lined with teal silk and printed with iridescent silver, gold, and copper pigments, by Maria Monaci Gallenga.

Maria Monaci Gallenga Although a disciple of Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, Maria Monaci Gallenga did not train or study with him. She did, however develop a style of tea gown made of stencilled velvet which echoed those created by the Venetian designer. At the same time, Gallenga gowns made their own statement. They were cut in the style of a medieval tabard: two flat rectangular panels were joined at the shoulder and sides, and the back panel was long enough to form a train. Long panelled sleeves almost touched the floor. Embellishment was limited to tubular Venetian glass beads set along the seams. Both Fortuny and Gallenga were among the most forward-looking designers of the early twentieth century, and their designs were the precursors of the simpler cuts of the 1920s. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #words #pictures #neon #urchin #mariamonacigallenga #fashiondesigner #blockprintingtechnique #italian #textiledesigner #teagowns #petergallenga #oldworldmotives #medievalpatterns #modernsilhouette #boutiqueitalienne https://www.instagram.com/p/B73IQuhgQtX/?igshid=1oz3bus0exiit
