Mariana Yampolsky
Born in Chicago to a Russian father and a German mother, Yampolsky moved to Mexico City at the age of 19 - and never left. She spent several years studying at the La Esmerelda school of painting and sculpture, before working as an engraver in the politically committed Taller de la Grafica Popular (Workshop of graphics for the masses) in the early 1950s.
Her images typically featured scenes from the daily life of Mexico's indigenous communities, particularly of women, as well as vernacular architecture and cactuses.
