“Dear Alice” is a love letter from a grandmother to a granddaughter and an optimistic vision of the future of farming. It’s a nostalgic look towards a new era of agriculture, with beautifully crafted backgrounds, delicate animation and a completely unique score by long-time Ghibli composer (and absolute legend) Joe Hisaishi. (Yeah, we can’t believe this happened either).

Airbnb system building – identity and illustration – article by Naomi Bensen
01.
OVERVIEW
In early 2019 our team was asked to do a total rebrand of Airbnb’s illustration style. While our creative director Jennifer Hom was defining the visual identity of this new style, I was tasked to create parameters on how we curate talent and pull together a talent directory.
02.
CHALLENGE
Compared to the previous strictly defined illustration brand, this new vision required a huge variety of talent. How do you define what is on and off brand when working with hundreds of unique artists? Where are the boundaries of how we depict Airbnb’s style vs. an illustrators personal style?
03.
SETTING BOUNDARIES
As Jennifer created visual brand rules I worked in tandem to ensure that who we were sourcing always tied back into what she was defining.
For example, when depicting humans Jennifer defined clear visual rules:
> Human forms should be based on real anatomy and skin tones.
> Color should feel bright and playful.
> There should be a sense of depth/shading.
Based on these guidelines, I created boundaries on who might fit within that sweet spot and who would be off brand.
04.
HIRE STRATEGICALLY
Every illustrator brings their own unique skill set and specialization to a project. Our goal as art directors is to make sure that when we choose someone for a project they’ll be the perfect fit. At Airbnb I created two models for how we choose illustrators.
Hire for specialty:
Very few artists are able to illustrate every single scenario—and we don’t expect them to! We knew that we wanted to create situations for our illustrators to succeed.
With that in mind we began to tag who specialized in what for easy understanding. I quickly began to realize that there were natural categories illustrators often fell into.
Hire for style:
Within Airbnb we had several sub-brands that needed to flex within our ‘marketplace’ style.
This meant curating less around what an illustrator usually draws and more on their actual visual style.
We created a full range of tagging for illustrators that worked for each team within Airbnb.
05.
SOLUTION
Creating boundaries allowed us to collaborate faster and more strategically with our amazing group of illustrators. Furthermore, defining what an illustrator felt most comfortable working on helped us more clearly match them to the right project.

James Vincent McMorrow // National from Giant Ant on Vimeo.
This video for James Vincent McMorrow’s ‘National’, revolves around a man and a car, which serves as a container for various moments that present the character’s insecurity and loneliness, but also love. The car is a claustrophobic room and a vast space—a shield against the world outside, and the perfect spot to listen to music in the rain. Everything about the song, from the stripped-back instrumentation to the raw vocal, is incredibly moving and personal. We wanted to compliment this with a similarly emotive video that tells a story of unrequited love, interiority, and the complicated feelings that surround painful but treasured memories.
