Marjan Teeuwen at Bruce Silverstein Gallery
Working with materials salvaged from destroyed buildings, Dutch artist Marjan Teeuwen creates abstract arrangements of forms that suggest paintings. Here, she worked in an abandoned school in Johannesburg, South Africa during a 2015 residency to create an installation that speaks to a key theme – the inevitability of destruction and but also the hope of renewal. (On view through April 14th at Bruce Silverstein Gallery in Chelsea.) Marjan Teeuwen, Archive Johannesburg, archival pigment print, 38 x 43 inches, 2015.

Best Dutch Book Designs 2017⁣ Available at www.draw-down.com ⁣ ⁣ A catalog of the 33 best designed books of 2017—from projects by well-known publishers to museum catalogs, anniversary publications, and rare, privately-published books. The jury (designers Yolanda and Michaël Snitker; Freek Kuin, creative director Robstolk printers; Marije Sietsma, CEO of Publisher Loopvis; and Suzanne Bogman, Head of Publications at Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam) reviewed 343 submissions, selecting 33 to recognize for their editorial choices, graphic design,, treatment of images and text, choice of material, and technical production. The jury’s selections reflect some clear trends, such as intensive crowdfunding, designers who have also taken on publishing, and the shift away from reading to a culture based on images. This detailed review of the 33 finalists offers a special tribute to the printed form, with subjects ranging from salamanders and urban and spatial analyses, to artists’ books and a fairytale-like adventure. Among them are books by Marjan Teeuwen, Anne Geene & Arjan de Nooy, Henk Wildschut, Gorilla Collective, Natasha Ginwala, Willem van Zoetendaal, and more. Each book is given its own tabbed section, making the catalog into a reference work with easy access to the information for each winning title. Marjan Teeuwen - Destroyed Homes
Marjan Teeuwen creates massive installations using houses that are soon to be destroyed. She dismantles dilapidated entire buildings and then and the rebuilds them creating incredible architectural sculptures. Two examples include an abandoned home in Gaza which she turned into a massive stack of concrete blocks and a former sex shop in Holland turned into a floor to ceiling monochrome plaster structure. I find this use of repurposing otherwise destroyed and dead spaces really interesting. Turning living spaces into works of art, changing their purpose after then had met their time constraint. Teeuwen captures the installation in photographs before finally demolishing them once and for all. Although Teeuwen was exploring the relationship between chaos, order, destruction and reconstruction I feel her artwork can relate to Heterotopia too.

MARJAN TEEUWEN
Kleine kiertjes of doorkijk gaatjes is ontzettend interessant.
In overeenkomen met het werk wat wij op school maken is dat je uiteindelijk alleen de foto’s nog hebt. Het huis wordt gesloopt, dus ook de sculpturen. Ons sculptuur wordt gesloopt op school, en de foto’s blijven over.

The Artist Turning Destroyed Buildings into Mesmerizing Works of Art
The Artist Turning Destroyed Buildings into Mesmerizing Works of Art
Marjan Teeuwen, Destroyed House Krasnoyarsk 1, 2010. © Marjan Teeuwen. Courtesy of Bruce Silverstein Gallery, New York. Dutch artist Marjan Teeuwen loves a challenge. Her chosen canvases are entire buildings, which she methodically dismantles and reconfigures to create mesmerizing, massive installations. For the past decade, Teeuwen has transformed dilapidated, soon-to-be-destroyed structures…
