Cover Art | The Destroyer of Worlds: A Return to Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff
In this thrilling adventure, a blend of enthralling historical fiction and fantastical horror, Matt Ruff returns to the world of Lovecraft Country and explores the meaning of death, the hold of the past on the present, and the power of hope in the face of uncertainty. Summer, 1957. Atticus Turner and his father, Montrose, travel to North Carolina, where they plan to mark the centennial of their ancestor’s escape from slavery by retracing the route he took into the Great Dismal Swamp. But an encounter with an old nemesis turns their historical reenactment into a real life-and-death pursuit. Back in Chicago, George Berry fights for his own life. Diagnosed with cancer, he strikes a devil’s bargain with the ghost of Hiram Winthrop, who promises a miracle cure—but to receive it, George will first have to bring Winthrop back from the dead. Meanwhile, fifteen-year-old Horace Berry, reeling from the killing of a close friend, joins his mother, Hippolyta, and her friend Letitia Dandridge on a research trip to Nevada for The Safe Negro Travel Guide. But Hippolyta has a secret—and far more dangerous—agenda that will take her and Horace to the far end of the universe and bring a new threat home to Letitia’s doorstep. Hippolyta isn’t the only one keeping secrets. Letitia’s sister, Ruby, has been leading a double life as her white alter ego, Hillary Hyde. Now, the supply of magic potion she needs to transform herself is nearly gone, and a surprise visitor throws her already tenuous situation into complete chaos. Yet these troubles are soon eclipsed by the return of Caleb Braithwhite. Stripped of his magic and banished from Chicago at the end of Lovecraft Country, he’s found a way back into power and is ready to pick up where he left off. But first he has a score to settle. . . . The #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Splendid and the Vile brings to life the pivotal five months between the election of Abraham Lincoln and the start of the Civil War—a slow-burning crisis that finally tore a deeply divided nation in two. On November 6, 1860, Abraham Lincoln became the fluky victor in a tight race for president. The country was bitterly at odds; Southern extremists were moving ever closer to destroying the Union, with one state after another seceding and Lincoln powerless to stop them. Slavery fueled the conflict, but somehow the passions of North and South came to focus on a lonely federal fortress in Charleston: Fort Sumter.   Master storyteller Erik Larson offers a gripping account of the chaotic months between Lincoln’s election and the Confederacy’s shelling of Sumter—a period marked by tragic errors and miscommunications, enflamed egos and craven ambitions, personal tragedies and betrayals. Lincoln himself wrote that the trials of these five months were “so great that, could I have anticipated them, I would not have believed it possible to survive them.”   At the heart of this suspense-filled narrative are Major Robert Anderson, Sumter’s commander and a former slave owner sympathetic to the South but loyal to the Union; Edmund Ruffin, a vain and bloodthirsty radical who stirs secessionist ardor at every opportunity; and Mary Boykin Chesnut, wife of a prominent planter, conflicted over both marriage and slavery and seeing parallels between both. In the middle of it all is the overwhelmed Lincoln, battling with his duplicitous Secretary of State, William Seward, as he tries desperately to avert a war that he fears is inevitable—one that will eventually kill 750,000 Americans.   Drawing on diaries, secret communiques, slave ledgers, and plantation records, Larson gives us a political horror story that captures the forces that led America to the brink—a dark reminder that we often don’t see a cataclysm coming until it’s too late.

Shin Godzilla (2016) dir. Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi
Contains some spoilers.
Today marks the 77th anniversary of the u.s. bombing of Hiroshima. I’ve been reflecting a lot on it these days, mostly because of all the conversation around Oppenheimer. I didn’t set out to watch Shin Godzilla as a result of those conversations, or because of the date or anything like that, but I realized this morning that it ended up happening that way.
I will say I went about this kind of funny– the first film I saw in Hideaki Anno’s Shin Japan Heroes Universe was Shin Kamen Rider, then Shin Ultraman, and finally Shin Godzilla– so with the exception of Evangelion 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, which I have yet to see, I watched the series backwards. Because of this, some of the elements that Anno (and Shinji Higuchi) used in Shin Godzilla weren’t as surprising to me as they seemed to be to 2016 viewers because they’ve now become hallmarks of the SJHU films– namely the choice to use elements of the original 1954 Godzilla soundtrack. The integration of the original soundtracks has been one of my favorite aspects of the SJHU films, and it worked well for me here. Michael W. Harris has an interesting post on his blog, The Temp Track, comparing Shiro Sagisu’s work in this film to his work for the Evangelion series– I recommend reading it if you’re interested in that sort of thing, as my musical knowledge isn’t robust enough for me to say what I want to say about it. I originally thought that they used the 1954 roar for the entirety of the film, but when I was looking up information about it this morning, I learned that they only used it for Godzilla’s third form (dubbed Shinagawa-kun for his destruction of the Shinagawa ward)-- his fourth form (Kamakura-san) uses the higher pitched 1962-1975 roar. Maybe modern audiences are more familiar with the later roar, or perhaps it was a choice motivated by personal nostalgia on Higuchi and Anno’s parts.
Modern depictions of Godzilla tend to favor a kaiju-fighting anti-hero Godzilla– a Godzilla that is fearsome, but respected, and can be maneuvered to fight against other more antagonistic monsters. The Godzilla we see in Shin Godzilla is not this. This Godzilla is a destructive, terrible, inescapable force. From the first moment that we see something explode out of the water, there’s an atmosphere of dread– or at least there was for me. Of course, much as the 1954 Godzilla came less than a decade after the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, this film came less than a decade after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami, and the simultaneous nuclear disaster in Fukushima. I’m sure that Japanese audiences knew exactly who the filmmakers were pointing at during sequences like the meetings-on-meetings, or the press conferences featuring politicians clad in blue jumpsuits. Ishiro Honda, the director of the 1954 Godzilla, is stated to have filmed Godzilla’s destruction of Tokyo to directly mirror the bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The scenes of boats piled on top of each other, or cars being flung apart as the road is ripped up beneath them, clearly evoke the destruction caused by the 3.11 earthquake and tsunami. (There’s an article on MyKaiju called “311 Motif in Shin Godzilla” where John Ruffin compares scenes from the film and images from the news.) I watched Shin Godzilla thinking about 2011, but also the consequences of global warming in the global south– particularly in places like the Philippines, where people are hit year after year by catastrophic typhoons– and of course, to a lesser degree, the ineffectual government response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Anyway, this isn’t to say that there aren’t moments of sympathy for Godzilla. It’s made clear that Godzilla exists as a result of environmental destruction– individual and state choices– and after the bombs are dropped, we hear the song “Who Will Know,” believed to be from Godzilla’s point of view. Of course, Godzilla never asked to become irradiated megafauna.
I read from a few people that the depiction of the u.s. was somewhat unpopular with western audiences. I honestly thought that the depiction of the u.s. was quite generous considering … everything about the u.s. I was most interested in Kayoco Anne Patterson’s motivations– she enters the film as a fast-talking, clearly Asian American politician (suspend your disbelief for a second– her makeup in comparison to the makeup we see on some of the other women in the film is one of the best examples I’ve seen of Asian American versus Asian makeup styles) but about halfway through the film, she tearfully explains that her grandmother lived in Japan during the war and lived through the bombings. Although it isn’t the focus of the film, there’s an interesting conversation here about diaspora and their connection to their homelands. It’s this connection that guides her actions, even at the cost of potentially destroying her political career.
Speaking of political careers, the protagonist, Rando Yaguchi, has a complex character arc. At the beginning of the film, he is one of the only characters willing to oppose the senior politicians’ belief that the explosion of steam in the ocean is not a threat. Throughout Shin Godzilla, we see him working tirelessly to protect his nation– at one point, his coworkers practically beg him to take a shower. His superior and mentor, Hideki Akasaka, believes for a moment that Yaguchi is motivated solely by a desire to further his political career, before understanding that Yaguchi truly wants to do what he sees as most effective to bring the Godzilla disaster to an end. This may not have been the intention, but there’s still something unsettling about Yaguchi’s character to me– even if we’re to believe he has the best intentions, and he does certainly seem to hesitate the least when it comes to doing what would save the greatest amount of people, he’s still a politician, and still needs to play the game.
Finally, I was struck by a lack of criticism of the Self-Defense Force. They’re largely presented as a self-sacrificing body willing to do whatever it takes to protect the nation. I’m not sure if it’s because Japanese criticism of bureaucracy and the government had been happening for decades at this point, whereas popular criticism of the military generally ends at a broad anti-war sentiment, or maybe it was simply too complicated to fit in a critique of militarism in this situation. I’ll be the first to admit that as a Filipino, I have no shortage of criticism of the JSDF. There was a moment where my partner and I had the same reaction though: there’s a painting in the background of a scene where Yaguchi is talking to three JSDF officials depicting a handful of military helicopters flying in front of Mount Fuji, and after the scene ended, my partner and I both asked, “What was up with that painting??”
Shin Godzilla is a dense, devastating film that warrants multiple watches. I’m sure I’ll have different takeaways the next time I watch it. (As it is, this is all I can remember because I forgot I wanted to take notes while watching. My bad!!!)
I rented it on youtube and watched it in Japanese with English subs.

‘We carried pistols to defend ourselves’: the Four Tops and the Temptations on six decades of soul | Soul | The Guardian
Duke Fakir, the last surviving founding member of the Four Tops, is reminiscing on the halcyon days of Detroit’s seminal soul music label as it made its mark on the 1960s. “Motown really did feel like a big family back then,” he says. “We all hung out, partied, played golf, held BBQs, appeared on one another’s records. Those were amazing times.”
The Temptations’ Otis Williams agrees: “Motown was no happenstance. God brought that up to start. Detroit, Michigan, was known for the big three – General Motors, Ford and Chrysler. Nowthe city’s going to be known as the Big Four because Motown has made a similar impact to those automobile manufacturers.”
Tumblr media
Fakir and Williams speak on separate Zoom calls from their respective homes in Detroit and Los Angeles before they set off. Their recollections of the original Motown period speak to their personalities: Fakir possesses a mellifluous voice and often speaks in endearing platitudes; Williams enunciates his philosophical musings in the deepest, gruffest tones imaginable. “We have such loyal fans here – they really know our songs and give us so much love,” says Williams, clearly still excited about the prospect of crossing the pond even after so many trips. Fakir concurs: “Sometimes I think Motown is more popular and appreciated in Britain than in the US.”
Tumblr media
Fakir describes that night as “one of the most memorable and magical of my life. … I got chatting to Paul McCartney and he was asking me how we did certain vocal harmonies,” he says. “There were lots of musicians there – members of the Stones and Small Faces and other bands too. Everyone was smoking hash and having a high old time!”
Motown’s legacy in the UK is undeniable to this day, as evidenced by Diana Ross’s triumphant Glastonbury legends performance this year. Both men agree that Ross, like them, can still turn it on. “Berry Gordy’s vision with Motown – the songs, the producers, the artists, the training we all received in how to present ourselves – he was thinking long term,” says Williams. “That’s why Diana and Stevie and the Tops and Temptations are still out here.”
There’s no doubting Gordy’s genius and the durability of Motown’s finest songs. But Williams and Fakir deserve credit for ensuring their groups remain top level draws – especially given that neither were originally the lead vocalists in their respective groups. “I had a long apprenticeship,” says Fakir. “The Tops formed in 1953 and we didn’t score our first hit until 1964 but, during those years, we were busy working clubs across America and, with that, came an understanding of how to make sure things ran smoothly.”
“I learnt how to take care of business because no one else would,” Williams says circumspectly.
Tumblr media
But over the years, the internal relationships of the two groups would come to stand in dramatic contrast: the Tops were a band of brothers, the Temptations extraordinarily dysfunctional. “We were friends who worked things out democratically,” says Fakir. It was only cancer – which claimed Lawrence Payton in 1997, Obie Benson in 2005 and the quartet’s mighty lead vocalist Levi Stubbs in 2008 – that diminished a band that formed as teenagers in 1953. “Each of us had his role in the group and we all worked together. We’re only human, so we did have disagreements – but we were a loving unit.”
Love is not a word Williams uses to describe the Temptations: the acrimonious departures of lead vocalists David Ruffin and Eddie Kendricks, followed by Paul Williams’ death in 1973, spelt the end of the classic lineup. Other members were fired, or quit following altercations. After Melvin Franklin died of a brain seizure in 1995, it left Otis Williams as the only original member. By then Ruffin, Kendricks and Paul Williams had all died – from an overdose, lung cancer and gunshot, respectively. As we speak, both men regularly thank God for their good health and lengthy careers.
For a hugely successful outfit who created such uplifting music, the Temptations’ story is a tragic one. “Success can test an individual so as to reveal their true self,” Williams says, when asked about why the Temptations were so conflicted, “I hate that there was not enough solidarity for us to hang on in there. I hate that I lost my guys, because we made such an impact on the world. But the one thing that’s constant in life is change. It’s not the guys that go ahead and take the money out and think it’s all about them who always survive. I went through a lot but God in his infinite wisdom left me here to carry on in their spirit.”
Despite the adversity they’ve faced, and the members they’ve lost, both groups are, perhaps improbably, still going strong. Earlier this year, the Temptations released a new album, Temptations 60, marking 60 years since their debut, while Fakir has recently published an autobiography, I’ll Be There: My Life With The Four Tops. Still, both Williams and Fakir seem aware that their days of touring can’t last forever. Williams is 80 while Fakir is 86; the former says he’s in “good shape, so long as God allows”, but the latter is ready to call it a day. “This tour will be my last of the UK,” says Fakir. “I’m planning on retiring in the next year.”
Will the Tops continue without him?
“The Tops will go on forever, just like Motown,” he replies. “This is forever music.”

Mountaineers Defeat Tar Heels in Duke's Mayo Bowl Rout
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Courtesy: wvusports In the inaugural play of the game, West Virginia seized the lead and maintained dominance, securing a 30-10 triumph over North Carolina in the Duke's Mayo Bowl held at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Mountaineers initiated their first possession with a remarkable 75-yard touchdown pass from the game's Most Valuable Player, Garrett Greene, to Traylon Ray. Subsequently, they thwarted a Tar Heel offense, predominantly composed of substitutes, restricting them to a lone touchdown and no points in the latter half. Despite the absence of key players such as All-America center Zach Frazier and top rusher C.J. Donaldson Jr., West Virginia showcased Greene, their starting quarterback. In contrast, North Carolina faced the game without their primary quarterback, Drake Maye, and several other key contributors. Greene demonstrated prowess by completing 12 of 23 pass attempts for 228 yards and contributing an additional 64 yards on the ground, culminating in a total offensive output of 392 yards for the Mountaineers. The standout narrative of the evening unfolded through WVU's defensive prowess, sacking North Carolina's quarterback Conner Harrell seven times and achieving a shutout in the latter part of the game. Omarion Hampton, UNC's leading rusher, was limited to a net gain of 62 yards, resulting in the Tar Heels managing only 140 yards on the ground, inclusive of sack yards. Harrell, despite completing 18 of 27 attempts for 199 yards, faced adversity with two interceptions and incessant pressure throughout the game. Coach Neal Brown expressed, "This is a remarkable group; I've thoroughly enjoyed coaching them, and tonight, we answered the call." The victory held special significance for Brown, given that his team was initially predicted to finish last in the Big 12 but exceeded expectations with nine victories, marking the first time since 2016 that the Mountaineers concluded a season with double-digit wins. Highlighting the exceptional performance, Brown acknowledged, "Our defense and special teams were outstanding, and Mountaineer Nation truly made an incredible showing." Indeed, the crowd of 42,925, predominantly clad in Old Gold and Blue, passionately supported the team. Amidst Ray's touchdown and Michael Hayes' field goal concluding the first half, promising Mountaineer drives faced setbacks, including three holding penalties, an illegal man downfield penalty, and D.J. Oliver's fumble. Nevertheless, Beanie Bishop Jr. provided a brief 11-point lead with a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown, marking WVU's first punt return for a score in a bowl since 2017. The first half witnessed North Carolina's sole touchdown drive covering 76 yards in five plays, benefiting from Malachi Ruffin's pass interference penalty on Jon Jones Jr. WVU's response was swift, with Greene's pass to Clement for 32 yards setting the stage for Hayes' field goal, concluding the half. The second half witnessed Harrell's interceptions and WVU capitalizing on penalties, extending their lead with another field goal by Hayes. As the game progressed, West Virginia's dominance continued, with Greene's 48-yard run and a subsequent pass to Taylor, culminating in White's touchdown run and Hayes' successful conversion. North Carolina's unsuccessful attempts on their own 26-yard line resulted in Hayes adding three more points, concluding the scoring. This victory marked West Virginia's 17th in 40 all-time bowl appearances, securing a 9-4 record for the regular season and instilling momentum for the offseason with key offensive players returning in 2024. In a post-game tradition, the West Virginia crowd remained in the stadium to witness Coach Neal Brown partake in the ceremonial dumping of mayonnaise on his head. Looking ahead, the Mountaineers encourage fans to maintain the momentum by securing season ticket deposits for the upcoming 2024 season, available at WVUGAME.com for just $99 for new season ticket orders. Renewal information for existing season ticket holders will be provided in the coming months. Read the full article

My Favorites 2023
Tumblr media
Last Years: 2020, 2022
This is a list of my favorites. This started off as my favorite YouTube channels, but I have since expanded the list. I watch a lot of media over the internet. I still watch youtube every day. I do not have cable. I tend to gravitate to informative and educational content. As a hip-hop artist I watch a lot of rap-related content to keep my hand on the pulse of the culture. I have broken down my lists into categories. I still watch the posted YouTube clips from the night before late shows in the morning.
My Top Favorite (Late Night) TV Shows I watch on Youtube
Amber Ruffin
The Problem with John Stewart
Jimmy Kimmel
Stephen Colbert
Seth Meyers
Jimmy Fallon
The Daily Show
Last Week Tonight with John Oliver
Real Time with Bill Maher
It’s no longer hard to pick who my favorite late night tv show host is. If I had to pick between them I’d STILL pick Amber Ruffin. I’ve been missing John Stewart who does an excellent job of getting right to the heart of the problem. I like Kimmel’s dry sense of humor and Fallon’s antics. I’m really impressed with John Oliver’s program and Seth Meyers’s “A Closer Look” segment.
I have broken down my favorite YouTube channels into two categories, general, and farm. I watch a lot of farm-related content.  Although I don’t think I want a farm even if I could afford one, I love watching the animals and farmers doing chores. I feel I get a different lived-experience when I watch these videos so I have the perspective of a farmer, which I’ve always wanted.
Top Five YouTube Farm Channels
Gold Shaw Farm
Urban rescue ranch
Just A Few Acres Farm
Justin Rhodes
Nate Petroski
Greg Judy Regenerative Rancher
Top Favorite YouTube Channels
Philip DeFranco
Leeja Miller
Adam Conover
HasanAbi
Democracy Now!
Mark Rober
Casey Neistat
How Ridiculous
Casual Geographic
Robert Reich
I don’t even watch Drama Alert anymore. Roman Atwood doesn’t hold my interest like it used to. I’d rather watch something with animals in it rather than explosions or rc cars. Mark Rober got knocked off his top spot. His videos are engaging and awesome but there is only one per month. I still watch Phil every day he posts a show. I don’t even watch the vlog squad anymore or Jason Nash. My interests are more sociological and news-oriented from the top.
I still watch an ASMR video every night to fall asleep. The one thing I can’t stand is when ASMR artists touch or poke the screen or their lens. It’s a pet peeve that gives me that cringe you get when looking into bright lights for too long. Some artists do it all the time, like FrivolousFox ASMR, which really prevents me from liking them although I want too.
Top YouTube ASMR Artists:
Ephemeral Rift
Dr. T
ASMR Zeitgeist
Hypnotic dreams
asmr_divinity
Dong
Trigger Happy ASMR
Peaches
Sophie Michelle
ASMR Bakery
Honorable mentions on tiktok
Asmr kenobi
Luke ASMR
Depending on the time of day determines what type of asmr video I watch. If it’s at night it has to be a dark background and a long video. If it’s during the day it can be brighter and shorter. ASMR Zeitgeist is still one of my favorites. I still think they are the Cadillac of ASMR. I have logged the most hours on my tv with Ephemeral Rift. Dr. T has great videos for naps, same with Hypnotic dreams tapping videos. Divinity has been giving ephemeral rift a run for his money as I have been using her videos more and more to fall alseep. I added ASMR Kenobi and Luke as honorable mentions who entertain and put me to sleep from tiktok.
Top 10 Hip-hop related content
Now we will get into the hip-hop-related favorites starting with dancing channels.
Top 5 Dancing Channels on Tiktok/Instagram

Honorable mentions:
Hundo music

Lumi funk
I put Mike Posner as an honorable mention because he is one of my favorite artists, is from Michigan, but isnt a rapper. The top ten affiliated underground hoonorable mentions are Michigan artists that I know or work with. Hundo is a guitar player with a couple albums. Ardea is my producer’s artist moniker from Kalalmazoo Michigan. And Lumi funk is a funkadelic band from the UP who I went to school with the bassist.
Here are channels that are about hip-hop whether it be educational, entertainment or interviews. I did my top favorite commentary channels but Pat CC is the best, but he does documentary style commentary.
Favorite Hip-hop related content channels
Kyle Beats

Tantu
Keyano
Ryini
Anno domini
That Kid Goran
Feniko
Destiny
Kylo
They Call Me Heat
Bb beats
Honorable mention:
RJ Pasin
I have made a song with all of the listed beat makers. RJ makes guitar samples, but I have a song from one of his samples that is currently doing well. Maybe next time I’ll have a list of sample makers. Like most independent artists, I only work with producers who I like their sound, so naturally they’re also my favorite. But if money was no object I left the list of unobtainable producers who are way outside my career and pay range. The last one is dead but arguably the most sought-after producer ever.
Top 10 Unobtainable Producers:
Dr. Dre
Pharrell
Timbaland
DJ Mustard
Swiss Beats
DJ Quik
Mike Will Make-it
Rick Rubin
The Alchemist
Just Blaze

Having Made History
My last day at Truist Financial Corp. was today. Here's the email that I sent to the company, looking back at the last 4 years and the company's whole history.
*************************************************************
1,242 days ago, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission announced that SunTrust Banks Inc. had merged with and into BB&T Corporation, with BB&T surviving the merger as the surviving corporation, and pursuant to their agreement, at closing, BB&T had changed its name to Truist. 49 days later, I was personally recruited by the firm as a BB&T banker. Today, I stand proud of the story we've been able to tell since then. While this journey certainly has been a long road traveled, it marks the end of an era for me – it’s an emotional time for all of us. Given the current opportunity I have been presented with, I’ll be leaving the company. However, I want all of you to know that I’m brimming with nostalgia, gratitude, and optimism.
It’s been my great honor and privilege to be a part of this firm for the last 3 years. I’m also thankful for the lessons, in good times and bad, that I have learned as part of the Strawbridge office, working under the mentorship of Vice President Laura Finn. When Laura recruited me to Strawbridge, from the Pembroke office, she did so with the goal in mind of taking the Strawbridge team to new heights - a feat not easily done during a company's merger integration process. And together, we have rebuilt, reinvented, and strengthened our processes, having made history with our office's production in the process.
From a macroeconomic perspective, we're in a very transformative period in the banking industry, and we have quite a bit of a way to go before we get to the end of the tunnel. As we look ahead at a medium-to-hard landing in this elevated rate environment, factors like deposit flight, credit crunches, a hard market correction, and an overexposure to commercial real estate will all continue to add to the volatility that the regional banks are experiencing now. But looking back on my time at Truist, we have confronted seemingly insurmountable business challenges, along with many surprise twists and turns. I’ve seen our teams navigate these hurdles and mountains in ways that have not only made Truist teammates stronger, but all the more ready to face what's ahead. During these past 3 years, I’ve delivered solutions that cared for our clients, focused on our clients’ financial well-being and their businesses' growth, driven substantial value for our shareholders, and endeavored to help make Truist the absolute best place to bank. I want to take a moment to remind you of some of my many achievements, aided by my teammates. They are remarkable, and we should all be very proud.
I became the biggest referring officer in my area within my first six months of employment, breaking a record and earning a promotion before the 12 month promotion window opened up.
Upon my arrival at Pembroke, within my first few weeks, I secured Pembroke’s first qualified Premier and Asset Management referral in months which ignited a resurgence of production in the branch and spurred a strong run of qualified IRM referrals by not only me, but also my colleagues.
Within my first 30 days at Pembroke, I took the branch’s Voice of the Client survey scores from 36% to 91%, a record-breaking jump.
At Pembroke, even before attaining a leadership role, I had the privilege of mentoring other bankers, like Andrea Taylor, Daniela Tavares, and longtime friend Marci Ruffin, all who are still flourishing in the company today.
I cross-sold products, across different divisions of the bank, making my partners' deal-closings easy and quick, earning me yet another promotion 6 months later.
At the Strawbridge office, within my first 12 months as a lender, I became the third highest credit lending producer in the entire area, earning a corporate offsite trip to meet the board of directors.
In Q3 of 2022, I produced an entire quarter’s worth of credit card production in just 30 days, another area record.
In the last six months of 2022, I single-handedly wrote over 1.3 million dollars in loans with almost a million of it being produced in the last three months, outperforming many branch managers while only being a branch banker.
I put up huge numbers again in Q1 of 2023, being responsible for 41% of our office’s 44 qualified IRM referrals, the highest share of our office's total production. It was this quarter that the Strawbridge office hit over 150% of our quarter's goal, with over 100% of it being in by the quarter's halfway mark - something Laura Finn told me had never been done in the history of our branch. I was recruited to Strawbridge to make the team better and to give us a "championship win"… I have accomplished what I was brought here to do.
As I look back on these achievements, I want to sincerely thank specific Truist Financial Corporation employees, past and present, for your contributions to my time here both large and small. To Darius Hudgins, from the beginning, for bringing me into the company and for being the model as my district manager - one of the youngest VPs to ever do it. You have guided me, been there for me, and provided me with the motivation to put up that one million in lending that I delivered in a single quarter. To my aunt, Stephanie Paige, who has been a support system, a voice of wisdom, and a constant champion in my corner. My parents are thankful to you for always watching over me. To Katie Bagay - my partner in crime and my first deal-closer - in whom I've gained a lifelong friend, a confidant, and mentor; for standing by me in turbulent times, and always, always, always having my back. I appreciate you. To Katy Elliot - Katherine Scarlett -  we’ve been there to lean on each other these past few years, and I appreciate you greatly. To Susie Waugh, one of the GOATs and a true BB&T legend, who has served as a mentor for me over the past few years, willing to answer my calls on a whim, and giving me sound leadership advice when I've needed someone to talk things over with - always willing to be the coach. You told me I would contribute greatly to Strawbridge, but that I wouldn’t be here long - you’ve always seen my potential. You also told me I was cut from the Susie Waugh cloth, and I promise you that I will always “find a way to say yes”. To Cheryl Poarch, who knew my father before I was thought of and ended up looking out for his son like I was your own. I don’t have words to adequately describe what your friendship means to me, and I will miss working alongside you more than you know. You single-handedly revamped the operations at Strawbridge and our successful, passed bank audit - the first in a long time - is credited to your leadership. To Lori Ann Tamayo, the best wealth advisor I have personally ever worked with, I am eternally grateful for the hours of counseling and training you have given me. For, perhaps, some of the most impactful career advice I have been given thus far, for the late night phone calls about deals we’ve worked on, and for being my sponsor, I thank you. To Brant Standridge and Daryl Bible, for both their leadership and their commitment to our success. Thank you. To Kelly King, who taught me that a butterfly’s wing flaps can spur a hurricane halfway across the world, emphasizing the ability for one person to make a huge difference. To Laura Finn, arguably, the greatest lender this company has. You have taught me more in our time together than most vice presidents can ever teach a protégé. And for that, I thank you. You hand-picked me, pulled me out of the office I was dominating in, and helped mold me into the biggest producing lender Strawbridge has ever had on a banker’s desk. You and I did everything we said we would do. Thank you.
Finally, I want to thank our founders, Alphaeus Branch and Thomas Jefferson Hadley - Branch and Hadley Bankers created a ripple effect that started in North Carolina and was felt around the world. Every entrepreneur’s wildest dream is to change the world with their ideas, and you’ve done just that. From day one, your vision and tenacity helped create one of the most special companies of all time – one that is currently employing more than 50,000 people, has generated billions in revenue, and has funded, protected the assets of, and banked a large portion of humanity. As I step into this new role in the wealth management segment of the banking industry, at one of the nation’s Big Four banks, I will take with me all of the lessons learned. Alphaeus and Thomas, I will forever be in awe of you and I will forever be your biggest fan.
Building better lives and communities together,
Darien II
