“That night, Mark Smeaton was removed to Cromwell’s house in Stepney for interrogation, and accused of adultery with the Queen. By some accounts, he was grievously tortured. Strictly speaking, this was illegal, but as a deracinated Fleming, a court entertainer without family or connections, he was as torturable as none of the other suspects would be, and this may well ultimately account for the inclusion of this random waif in the line-up of Anne’s ‘lovers. Cromwell could not proceed without a confession of some sort of a ‘starter’ for his brew, and he was hardly going to get one from Sir Henry Norris. With this little bit-player’s confession, imaginatively deployed, he would get Norris anyway. It took some hours to get one even out of Smeaton.
The boy confessed. An hour before midnight, long-held plans for the King and Queen to visit Calais in the first week of May — that is, the following week  — were quietly cancelled.”

While Martin Glover did collaborate with many people, some did have to wait for their chance to work with him. For instance, I'm actually surprised he didn't work with The Charlatans sooner, he could've made their 90's even better, so they called him for Who We Touch, which ended up as their milestone. They sort of rejuvenated themselves after the LP, though the spectre of Jon Brookes lies heavily on the platter. Sure, this is them at one of their loosest moments – I agree with the review at Allmusic –, but Brookes couldn't develop that later on, since he died since Who We Touch. True, the elegiac tone is not present, his absence was not foreseen, yet the fact they took a long break after the disc? This does speak volumes and so does their retreat to what they did later on.

I am not about to sit here and claim that any work is above reproach, but so many criticisms of RENT are either directly addressed within the show or are just. not true. and this perennial discourse about how Problematic it is annoys me, so here we go
Why don't they just pay the rent?
are you kidding me
did you watch the show??
they don't have any money
the situation established at the beginning is that Benny has allowed them to stay in their apartment rent free for the past year because Roger was unable to work and he and Mark wouldnt be able to afford living expenses as well as Roger's medication otherwise.
Benny then tells them that unless they break up Maureen's protest, they will not only have to immediately start paying rent, they will also have to pay back the entire previous year's rent or else be evicted
needless to say if you ware barely scraping by, you do not have a year's worth of rent and then some just sitting on hand
Mark was cosplaying poverty, he could've gone back to his parents' house at any time.
perhaps
all we know about Mark's parents from canon is that theyre pushy and he doesnt want to live with them. We don't know any details of their living situation or home life
but even if he would have been fine moving back home, it would have meant abandoning both the community he had grown into, and Roger.
Roger literally had not left the apartment since April died, and was not well enough to work to support himself at the time. Mark leaving would mean leaving Roger without support.
Mark's view of the homeless is often voyeuristic and expoitative.
yah
the conflict between Mark's comparatively privileged upbringing and the poverty amongst which he now lives is a major part of his character
remember when that homeless lady told him to fuck off
that didnt just slip in by accident
The whole show is about not being able to afford things, and then Mark quits his job for his Ideals.
Mark was not entirely jobless before being employed at the magazine. He wasn't going from having a job to unemployment. He always had money for food, clothes, medication, etc., even if it was tight
he just wasn't employed in his field. it wasnt a question of Having A Job or Not; it was about whether Mark was willing to accept the chance to get closer to making a living off of his art, even if it went against his morals, or whether he could be content carving out filmmaking for himself in a way that felt right
I thought Jonathan Larson was gay and died of AIDS.
not his fault??
neither Larson nor his estate ever claimed either of those things, you just jumped to a conclusion and made it everyone elses' problem
I can't believe this is a common "criticism"
A straight man has no right to write about the AIDS epidemic.
I dont know how to tell you this, but AIDS is not a gays-only disease. what are you, a politician from 1986?
RENT was not about being gay, it was about the disease. Roger, Mimi, Mark, and Benny- half the main cast- are all straight as far as the audience is aware. other than gay people, the most at-risk groups at the time were IV drug users, sex workers, people of colour, and impoverished people, all of whom are represented in the show
Larson may not have had AIDS, but many of his friends and loved ones did, and died of it. how incredibly callous to say that someone cannot write about the tragedy they personally lived through, just because they are not of the demographic you most associate with it
Larson plagiarized the whole cast and all the major story beats from Sarah Shulman's People in Trouble.
this is one that cropped up on tiktok a couple years ago
have you read the book?
I have
the only similarities are that they are both about poverty and AIDS in New York, and there are characters who cheat on their partners. that's it.
it's like saying Veep plagiarized The West Wing because theyre both about white house staffers. or like those guys who claim any fantasy story featuring swords and the hero's journey is a Star Wars ripoff. it' absurd.
RENT is directly and openly based off the opera La Bohème by Puccini, as well as incorporating autobiographical elements from Larson's life
stop just repeating things you hear
in conclusion: there are real criticisms and analyses to be had with RENT, but these are not them

Gentle Giant Co-founder and Bassist Ray Shulman Dies at 73
Ray Shulman, co-founder and bassist of British prog band Gentle Giant, died March 30 “after battling a long illness,” the band said.
He was 73.
“May Raymond Shulman rest in peace and love,” Todd Rundgren’s Spirit of Harmony Foundation said.
Gentle Giant released 11 studio albums during its 1970-1980 run. Shulman went on to work as a composer and a producer, contributing to box sets by Tangerine Dream, Steve Hackett, Al Stewart, Chris Squire, the Moody Blues, the Alan Parsons Project and others.
“It’s not exaggerating when I say his input … made each project special,” Esoteric Recordings’ Mark Powell said in a statement.
“He was a very lovely man and I will miss his friendly manner. He made each project a pleasure.”
Primarily a bassist, Shulman also played violin, trumpet, recorder and guitar with Gentle Giant, which included his older brothers Derek and Philip, who survive.
Derek Shulman eulogized Ray as a “genius” and “a kind and caring soul” in a Facebook post.
“To all who knew Ray or know of him, think of him with kindness,” Derek Shulman said.

He recommends himself and his heart to Anne's favour and hopes that absence does not lessen her 'affection to us [...]'. This is a terrific bit of showing-off, centred upon the use of the word 'us'. This looks at first sight like the royal 'we' of Henry's official correspondence, but it isn't. The division of the heart and self into separate entities was one of the finer points of courtly doctrine, and Henry, as a king, gets an extra mark for using the plural personal pronoun to mean himself and his heart, not the royal 'us' of majesty. To emphasise his understanding of this unique distinction, he reverts to the humble 'I' and 'my' of the servitor in the same sentence.

“ADVISES GUILTY PLEA IN HOPE OF LENIENCY,” Toronto Star. March 16, 1933. Page 2. ---- Cadi Imposes $25 Fine After Hearing Civil Penalties in Trade Mark Case ---- "Just say your man is guilty and plead that you hope I'll go slow," was the candid advice of Magistrate Jones to defence counsel appearing for Lacova Bercovitz, charged in city police court to-day with "breach of the Canada Trade Mark Act."
The advice came at the conclusion of a more than usually lengthy argument in which defence contended accused had been sued in another court and lost, that costs amounting to $230 had been attached to the judgment, and that defendant had suffered other financial loss over the discovery of bottles bearing the registered trade mark of well- known ginger ale product.
"But you don't have to accept my advice. if you don't want to," added his worship.
"Of course I'll accept such well-meant counsel." agreed defence counsel. "My client is guilty and I hope you will see fit to go slow, your worship."
"Twenty-five dollars and costs or 30 days." replied Magistrate Jones. "Now I'm sure you'll agree that in the circumstances I've gone very slow."
“Yes sir, you have - and I thank you," returned counsel, leaving the court-room in happy mien with accused.
Stole Drawing Instruments Joseph Hastings and James Smith pleaded guilty to the theft of a set of drawing instruments from Toronto school.
James Hill, janitor at the school, testified that he had been punched in the stomach by Hastings when the two accused were first discovered in the premises but that Smith had ran away and was captured by police later. Hastings was stated to have a juvenile record.
The mother of Hastings and the father of Smith each spoke in behalf of their sons. Both were placed on remand for sentence and probation for one year and warned not to get into trouble again.
Sixty days in jail was ordered by Magistrate Jones in the case of Ralph Whitefield, convicted of fraud in connection with a cheque for $30 alleged to have been used to obtain goods from a downtown department store.
Too Regular, Says Cadi Magistrate Tinker in early court to- day described Joseph Devine, up for a second time on a drunkenness charge, as being too regular an offender. Accused was fined $50 and costs or one month in jail.
Bert Proctor and Joseph Thompson were similarly charged and upon each admitting a previous conviction were ordered to pay $50 fine or go to jail for 30 days. No excuses were forthcoming from either.
As a first offender Jack Wilson was given $10 or 10 days. Ten dollars or 30 days was the penalty imposed upon John Katerssela for begging food from private houses within the city. Accused attempted to explain he had tried to buy food. having 30 cents in his pockets at the time. "That's a pretty thin story," cut in the bench. "It's not reasonable for a man to pass by numerous restaurants and then ask this court to believe you wished to buy food from a private house."
The same penalty - $10 or 30 days - was also passed upon Antte Karoness, arrested in company with Katerssela. Police saw both visit several houses.
Having Little Party P.C. Oswell (626) went to a house on Bloor St. W. There, he said in liquor and traffic court to-day, he found Herbert Freeland and another man having a little party, early this morning.
"This is the kind of thing they were drinking," said the officer, holding up a bottle of cloudy stuff. "It looks like rubbing alcohol."
"I lose heart a bit at times," said Freeland, saying he had been in "drunk court" before. He was a war veteran, he explained, and asked for leniency.
Freeland was fined $10 or 30 days for permitting drunkenness.
Charged with having alcohol illegally. Benjamin Shulman was remanded till March 23. Bail was set at $1,000.
Thos. Eldridge and Harry Partridge, up on remand on charges of theft of an auto and driving recklessly, were placed upon remand for sentence.
Counsel for defence explained that the two men had met some friends in a brick yard who had a gallon of wine, of which all had freely partaken. Neither had the least remembrance concerning any auto.
"And in all probability I wouldn't either," cut in Magistrate Jones, in conclusion.
Chinese Charged Lee Wah and Wong Soon run a restaurant on Elizabeth St. P.C. Shaughessy and P.C. McKetrick dropped around. Five Chinese, said P.C. Shaughnessy, were sitting at a table with liquor poured out in little cups by a waitress.
"I don't know anything about it," stated Lee Wah. "I was in bed." He said that it is a common practice for Chinese customers to bring liquor into restaurants. He always told them not to.
Wong Soon stated he had a sign "Liquor Not Permitted in this Restaurant." The case was adjourned till March 23, so defence could bring the Chinese waitress to testify.
In answer to a telephone call, P.C. McKay (718) went to the home of George and Elizabeth Allen, Elm. St. A milkman had called and there had been a scrap, it was explained.
"We'd been drinking pretty heavily," said Allen. "I should say so," said Judge Coatsworth, scanning accused's liquor permit.
Allen was fined $20 and costs or 30 days for permitting drunkenness, and the judge cancelled his permit. The charge against the woman was dismissed.
The court fined Joseph Ravia $100 and costs or three months for having liquor illegally. Police said they found beer in his car on Dufferin St.
Alice Beggs and Florence Gasny will be back on March 23 to answer charges of "having."

The work of architect Ralph Allen (1932-2021) revolved around concrete: throughout his career he explored the sculptural possibilities of the material, the interplay of shadow and light but also was aware of the environment, although his almost exclusive use of concrete might seem contradictory today.
Born in rural Nebraska and trained at the state’s university Allen nonetheless started his career in California, the state he had gotten to know during his Navy basic training prior to his service in the Korean War. He found his first employment in the office of Thornton Abell but by the early 1960s formed an association with Gates Burrows who had initially hired Allen as a draftsman. At this point also begins Allen’s catalogue of independent works, namely with the house he built for himself and his family in Laguna Beach in 1963. This house also is the earliest project featured in the monograph „Concrete Spirit - The Architecture of Ralph Allen“, written by Michael J. Crosbie, published by Rockport Publishers in 1995 and prefaced by Julius Shulman. The latter was first approached by Allen in 1972 for a series of photographs of recently completed projects. These included, among others, the Orange County Law Library and the Cypress Branch Library, sculptural concrete buildings that marked the prelude to a number of commissions from the Orange County authorities.
The major part of the monograph is made up of 12 projects, primarily schools, libraries and other educational buildings, presented in brief texts, comprehensive photo spreads, plans and occasional drawings that steer the reader’s attention to the (sculptural) qualities of Ralph Allen’s buildings. They are followed by a project chronology containing additional buildings and a brief biographical sketch.
But despite the briefness of the 120-page book it nevertheless manages to bring to the fore the exceptional work of a relatively unknown California architect who’s a great discovery.
