My Life So Far (1999)
My Life So Far is a film about the life and times of a boy from Scotland. Set in the 1920s and based on the memoirs of a British television executive, it revolves around a family, the Pettigrews, and how they deal with the aftermath of World War One. Their son Fraser is the centre of the story and he is the son of a wealthy estate owner, Edward Pettigrew (played by Colin Firth).
Gamma, the matriarch of the story, had two children – Morris and Moira. Morris set out to carve a path for himself as a businessman, while traditional Moira married Edward Pettigrew and raised a large family in his estate. Edward is characterised as a typical country gentleman, conservative and church-going, owning a small business that turns moss into medical supplies, and interested in mechanical inventions. Morris loathes him, and the two compete to inherit Gamma’s fortune after she passes away.
Edward resists the change that Morris brings into his household. Morris and his fiancee Heloise, from France, bring in jazz music to counteract Edward’s strict Beethoven, and Edward sees his children growing up – Elspeth, his eldest daughter, gains a show pilot as a suitor. Fraser begins to read a book collection that his father had warned him against, and Heloise seduces Edward into an extramarital affair.
Eventually, Gamma dies of pneumonia after an accident and leaves her estate to a triumphant Edward. Moira reveals that she had discovered the affair and Edward spends months working towards regaining her trust. The family returns to its original life, with Edward visibly more liberal and forgiving of Fraser’s mistakes.
Colin Firth’s Role:
Colin Firth plays Edward Pettigrew, a Scottish gentleman who is well-meaning but inarticulate. Instead of the dashing Mr Darcy from Pride and Prejudice who too owned a similar estate and indulged in love affairs, Pettigrew is subdued and lacks ambition. His wife Moira is also a far cry from Elizabeth Bennett, who was stubborn and intelligent – Moira is quiet and traditional, opting to raise Pettigrew’s children instead of pursue a lucrative career as an opera star.
Firth was praised for being able to bring out the childish character of Pettigrew, and for being able to make his role as yet another patriarch unique. Pettigrew’s character development is also a big turning point in the film, as he evolves from a no-nonsense strict gentleman in the beginning of the film to condoning his son Fraser’s cigar-smoking, jazz-dancing antics at the end.

Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio and David Strathairn in Limbo (1999). Wendy Ide wrote of Limbo in the UK Observer "For a film that is so infused with sadness... Limbo is remarkably funny - a gentle, empathic kind of humour that is derived from the men's bleak existences, without mocking them."

Paul Newman, Tom Cruise and Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio in The Color of Money (1986), directed by Martin Scorsese.  Awhile ago I wrote that Marty’s New York, New York may be my least favorite Scorsese film,  The Color of Money is easily my least favorite.  I cannot think of one good thing to say about the film.

Mary Elizabeth Mastrontonio as Maggie Ward in Class Action (1991).  Mary was born in Lombard, Illinois, and her entries among my best 1,001 movies are her film debut in Scarface, and The Abyss.  Since 2004, all but one of her credits are on tv,  most recently 19 episodes of Blindspot (2018-20).  Her other notable credit is The Color of Money.
