Total 1 1999 Minimal Techno / Tech House / Techno / Microhouse

I was all set to really lay in to this comp for being severely overrated. It's the first installment in the famed German minimal techno / microhouse label Kompakt's long-running series, Total, and it has a 4.3 rating on Discogs. Surely it was going to be a great listen from start to finish. Nope! The first seven of eight tracks are pretty thoroughly boring! But then the last five are really nothing short of fantastic; just sweet and innovative, minimally constructed dance grooves. In retrospect it was a ballsy move for a label that hadn't become a powerhouse yet to save its best material for last, but if you just stick through it, you'll eventually find the gold buried at the bottom of this thing. Or, you know, just save yourself the trouble and skip to track 9.

Marques Lafelt - Future Black Gurl (The Content Label)

Los Angeles-based producer Marques Lafelt is known for seductive soulful left-field sounds, taken from the perspective of a purveyor of classic techno. A prominent party organizer around L.A.’s beat scene, Marques’s previous efforts could be found on the Nylon Trax label and in remixes for Jaymz Nylon and Men From Nobu. The album Future Black Gurl is a afro-futuristic psychological concept album set in the distant future. It is about the search for love, self care, and relationship issues — finding and losing love and then reflecting on the journey and lessons learned. Future Black Gurl was a limited two-part project, self-released in 2012, now recovered, remastered, and reissued by The Content Label. Prepare to explore a timeless electronic sound. “Love Unlimited” sets the album’s tone in title and style, wistfully exploring the search for love through bold synthesis. “Sex in the 100s” looks forward to an older age with a late night groove … the imagined couple remains bonded together. “Cleared Outtake 2 Loveless” is a vision of Future Black Gurl, subdued and hidden within a slinky drum pattern. “TextNMe” heralds the arrival of Future Black Gurl via text message, soundtracked by a smooth, technological sheen. “Oso” is a downtempo signal of encounter, the couple now in person and entwined. “Korggy N Bass” transmits love through an introspective chillwave groove. “Kombat Laptop Drum” is all about the tension of the relationship … feel the drama in the agitated bass notes. “Broken TV Hold Me” is the end of the cycle, our protagonist alone with a broken television, missing Future Black Gurl. Bonus reflections are then found in “Cleared” — divergent in rhythm and evocative in mood — and “Sex In The 100s (Clicked Mix)” — another suggestive whisper to the future.

Was für eine Woche (24. bis 30. März)

Und noch immer lockt die Internationale Kurzfilmwoche Regensburg. 

Am Montag neben dem Filmprogramm auch mit einer Foyerparty vor der Filmgalerie im Leeren Beutel. Dort wird Rockabilly-Spezialist Chris Kaempfert Rock'n'Roll-Platten auflegen. Ab 23.30 Uhr. Glücklich ist, wer Dienstag frei hat. 

Apropos Dienstag: Im Ostentorkino legen dann DJs Musik zu Kurzfilmen auf. Bei den Plattenfilmen sind heuer dabei: Loony Tune, Maritim, Tom Tiger, Markus Güntner, Acid Maria und als Gast Mathias Schaffhäuser, Labelboss bei Ware Records. 

Am Mittwoch um 19 Uhr wird die Preisverleihung der Kurzfilmwoche im Ostentorkino zelebriert. Dort werden die Gewinner der Filmwettbewerbe verkündet und gefeiert. Direkt danach laufen dort alle Preisträgerfilme am Stück. 

Ein klein wenig Eigenwerbung: Direkt nach der Preisverleihung lege ich bei der Abschlussfeier in der Kinokneipe Musik auf. 

Die Preisträgerfilme und auch die Publikumslieblinge gibt es dann noch einmal am Donnerstagabend in der Filmgalerie und im Ostentorkino zu sehen. 

Am Freitag gastiert die italienische Shoegaze-Band Be Forest im W1 - auf Einladung des Sublime e.V.

Supportband sind XTR Human aus Stuttgart. 

Ebenfalls am Freitag, um 20.30 Uhr: In der Reihe Popkulturkino im Andreasstadel läuft "Art War", eine neue Dokumentation von Regisseur Marco Wilms über die ägyptische Kunst- und Kulturszene während des Arabischen Frühlings. 

Später am Abend legen dann auch noch Bavarian Mobile Disco aus München beim Puls Club im Scala auf. 

Samstag dann: Ausschlafen. Und danach: Hardcore und Punkrock im Büro. Dort treten Off the Hook aus Berlin und Contrast auf. Da kann man sich zum Wochenausklang noch schön das Gehirn durchspülen lassen.

Fanatico's album "Dancing Daze" (Yellow Tail Rec.) will be released in feb. 2013. DJ-producer Mathias Schaffhäuser and vocalist JorgeSocarrás have taken a diverse selection of iconic rock ‘n pop songs spanning the last five decades and reimagined them as electronica, covering a range of rhythms from house to dubstep to experimental while staying faithful to the vocal melodies. The album comprises 7 coverversions ranging from 1967 to 2003, with 3 original tracks representing the present/future. The project’s implicit question is: how much can you reconstruct a song while maintaining the essence of its identity and emotional quality? And keep the listener rhythmically engaged!   The project came about when Schaffhäuser did a remix of a track from the Patrick Cowley and Jorge Socarrás vintage 70’s album, “Catholic,” which was retro-released in 2009 by Macro Music, Berlin. The two men had never met, but Socarrás contacted Schaffhäuser to say how much he liked the remix. Schaffhäuser, who was an old fan of Socarrás’ 80’s band, Indoor Life, replied suggesting that perhaps they might work together sometime. Through subsequent emails both expressed how they’d each been wanting to interpret some cover songs, eventually leading to Socarrás going to Köln in August 2010 and spending a week recording with Schaffhäuser in his studio. The two had remarkable chemistry from the start, working together as if they were longtime music partners. Indeed Socarrás felt that in Schaffhäuser’s envelope-pushing minimalism he’d found a contemporary successor to his earlier collaborators.   By the way: The complete remastered Indoor Life recordings are being released as a 2-CD compilation on Compost Music also in Febuary 2013. Socarrás also sings on three songs on the album „The Curse of Soft Rocks“ by the british band The Soft Rocks. Mathias Schaffhäuser recently released on Tic Tac Toe, Suicide Circus Records, Adjunct and Lebensfreude and did remixes in 2012 for M.in, Kaiser Souzai, Florian Muller and several more.
