Sound of Metal (O Som do Silêncio, O Som do Metal) é um filme de drama, com direção de Darius Marder. Teve sua estreia mundial no programa Platform Prize no Festival Internacional de Cinema de Toronto e foi lançado também nos cinemas.

O longa do Amazon Prime Video, conta a história de Ruben (Riz Ahmed), um baterista de heavy metal que repentinamente está perdendo sua audição.

Como Ruben e sua namorada Lou (integrante da banda) estão prestes a iniciar uma turnê pelo país, ele sente que além estar perdendo sua carreira, também está perdendo a sua namorada.

Ruben então passa a vivenciar momentos de verdadeira angústia, já que se sente impossibilitado de tocar devida a perda irreversível de sua audição, o que lhe faz retornar a antigos traumas do passado, uma vez que ele é um ex viciado em drogas.

Com o incentivo de Lou, para que este busca ajuda e não caía em desespero, ele resolve ingressar em uma comunidade de pessoas com deficiência auditiva e passa a ser orientado por Joe (Paul Raci), que o ajuda a entender melhor o que ele está vivendo.

Uma delicadeza de filme, uma verdadeira pérola, dá vontade de colocar em um potinho.

Acho que o filme merece toda aclamação, inclusive, o índice de aprovação é de 97% no Rotten Tomatoes.

O filme recebeu seis indicações ao Oscar 2021: Melhor filme, Melhor ator (com Riz Ahmed), Melhor roteiro original, Melhor ator coadjuvante (com Paul Raci), Melhor som e Melhor edição. E ganhou os prêmios de Melhor som e Melhor Edição.

O elenco é maravilhoso. Sou complemente obcecada em Riz Ahmed, acho ele um ator primoroso, que se entrega a absolutamente tudo que faz.

Para quem não sabe, além de ator, ele é musicista. Ele é, sem dúvidas, uma das grandes surpresas do filme, ele torna o filme perfeito!

Você com certeza já o viu em alguma produção, ele fez o vilão Carlton Drake em Venom, fez o piloto da Aliança Rebelde Bodhi Rook, no filme Rogue One e ainda viveu o personagem Naz Khan, na aclamada série de sucesso da HBO "The Night Off" (essa jájá eu indico aqui).

O filme conta com o talentoso Paul Raci, que foi aclamado pela crítica por sua atuação como o mentor de Ruben, ele já é veterano no teatro, cinema, televisão.

Temos a atriz Olivia Cook, rostinho já conhecido em Jogador nº 1, onde viveu a personagem Samantha. Em Sound Of Metal ela vive Lou, a namorada de Ruben e também integrante da banda.

Quem também está no filme é Mathieu Amalric, ator e cineasta francês.

E ainda, temos a atriz surda Lauren Ridlof, que também ficou conhecida como ex-Miss América Surdos. Ela também é conhecida por viver a personagem Connie em The Walking Dead.

O filme se utiliza de recursos para que você se sinta na pele do Ruben, é ideal que você assista com um volume alto e sem intervenções, em silêncio total, pois fazem uso de ruídos e som para que você capte toda sensação que o Ruben sente ao perder a sua audição. Você realmente vivencia uma experiência, é completamente imersivo, você consegue compreender toda angústia e aflição do personagem, é impossível não se comover.

O filme é inclusivo, não apenas na história, o elenco conta com um grupo majoritário de PCDs (Pessoas com deficiências), como os atores Shaheem Sanchez, Chelsea Lee e Jeremy Stone.

O filme é excepcionalmente sonoro, sensorial. É um filme diferente, bonito, sensível. A última cena então, é de uma beleza, uma delicadeza.

Vale muito a pena, um filme com um bom roteiro e atuações belíssimas.

Sound of Metal (2019)

The most satisfying stories are the ones that keep you guessing and turn out to be so much more than what you anticipated. I had no idea where Sound of Metal was going next, how it would end, or how close to its conclusion I was at any point. With some of the finest performances of the year, a thoughtful, touching story, and excellent sound design (it’ll win an Academy Award for it, I’m sure), this is one of the year’s best films.

Ruben Stone (Riz Ahmed) is the drummer of heavy metal duo Blackgammon when his hearing suddenly gives out. Tests show Ruben can now make out less than 30% of the words he hears. Sensing her boyfriend’s breaking point approaching and fearing he’ll relapse, Lou (Olivia Cooke) convinces him to go to a shelter for deaf recovering addicts.

Immediately, there’s a lot to unpack. You see Ruben with his ugly tattoos all over his body, living on the road with his girlfriend and bandmate, performing loud, angry songs. You wonder what kind of rage simmers underneath. Then you see him wake up, do his morning exercises to romantic music, and prepare a healthy breakfast for Lou. Whatever person he might’ve been has been exorcised by love. He’s a recovering drug addict, she used to hurt herself. They’re not rich but they’re happy. Then, this incident comes and ruins everything.

It isn’t merely that Ruben will no longer be able to play, it’s that the shelter’s policy isolates him in a devastating way. He can’t communicate with anyone outside - including Lou. He can’t sign either. You’re sure the rules Joe (Paul Raci) is imposing are there for a reason… but you wonder if they’re what Ruben needs. Yes, the people he’s with are well-adjusted and happy, but does being able to hear mean the same to them as it does to him? You know. You’ve been there, struggling to piece together conversations. You heard the sound suddenly cut out mid-performance. You’ve seen how difficult it is to be out there and try to live a normal life.

The bulk of this film has our protagonist hanging onto this narrow ledge, struggling to climb back up and you wonder if you even want him to. If he was going to inevitable relapse, this might be a blessing in disguise, a chance to start new. You can see that but even if he does, Ruben refuses to even consider the possibility.

In this role, Riz Ahmed is so good you forget that when they were shooting, he wasn’t hearing what we are. The audio wasn’t mixed on-set. He just had to pretend like it was. You so desperately want him to emerge from this thing ok you’re scared the whole way through, which makes the ending just soul-crushing and beautiful at the same time. Sound of Metal is about deafness turning someone's life upside down but it turns into so much more. (March 30, 2021)

Thoughts : Cosmopolis (2012)

With the recent announcement of Robert Pattinson’s casting as Batman, the internet was (of course) up in flames with the polarizing debate that ensued.  For those only familiar with Pattinson in the Twilight saga, the opposition was strong.  A brave few film fans (like myself), however, started listing films of Pattinson’s that proved his mettle.  I named the ones I was familiar with (Good Time and Damsel), but one film I’d not heard of kept popping up in defense of Pattinson : Cosmopolis.

Eric Packer (Robert Pattison), the billionaire currency speculator and asset manager, decides he needs a haircut.  In order to facilitate this haircut, Packer has to take one of his stretch limousines across town to his favorite barber right in the middle of a Presidential visit to the city... a visit that is increasing traffic and traffic jams.  Under the protection of Torval (Kevin Durand), his Chief of Security, Eric and his limo traverse deeper and deeper into Manhattan.  Along the way, Eric tends to personal matters, including encounters with his new bride Elise (Sarah Gadon), a meeting/affair with his art consultant Didi Fancher (Juliette Binoche), a full physical from Dr. Ingram (Bob Bainborough), and several meetings with members of his staff : Head of Technology and Cyber Security (and startup partner) Shiner (Jay Baruchel), Systems Analyst Michael Chin (Philip Nozuka), Chief of Finance Emily Hampshire (Jane Melman) and Chief of Theory Vija Kinsky (Samantha Morton).  As a celebrity funeral further impedes traffic, an anti-capitalist demonstration begins to form throughout Manhattan, making Eric’s presence in the street more dangerous by the moment.

The lived-in, heavily textured world of David Cronenberg is present in this film, but the thin veneer of the limousine provides an oddly filtered, slightly disconnected experience in it.  Add to this that most every location outside the limousine, be it Elise’s library, the diner, or even the tight sidewalks are almost as claustrophobic as the limousine, and you are given a perfect visual analogy for the separation and ensuing pressure that Eric feels in connection to the world around him and how it moves.  What seemed like parallel annoyances and obstructions to his simple goal become directly relevant, as the Presidential motorcade and heightened political unrest raises the credibility of threats, and the celebrity funeral that impedes his progress turns out to be the funeral for his favorite rapper, Brother Fez (played by K’naan).  The further and further than Eric gets from his comfort zone, the ‘realer’ the world gets, as the barriers of comfort and financial separation are eroded.

Eric and his needs/desires become a microcosm for the needs/desires of the grotesquely rich, and how the trajectory towards satisfying these needs/desires stays forward moving regardless of what’s going on in the world around them, or who is left in the wake of the journey.  Something as trivial as a haircut, especially on someone whose hair is well put together throughout the majority of the film, becomes a steadfast beacon that must be reached, with all business and other desires becoming forced to acquiesce to the gravity of the haircut’s will.  In the search and hopes of bedding his newlywed wife, he continually pushes her further and further away with his own sexual exploits that he rubs in her face.  His circle of confidants is tight, and driven by what benefits him, be it financially, sexually or otherwise, making his journey as twisted as the premise presented.

The tension in this film is so tight that it feels all hell could break loose at any given moment.  The aged, earth-tone finish to the color timing gives the film a quality that makes it hard to pinpoint any particular time or era, with shades of many eras making their presence felt.  The journey from Manhattan to Uptown is unfolded in the background slowly but surely, giving the journey a Dante’s Inferno feeling of going deeper and deeper into the danger.  As mentioned earlier, the claustrophobic nature of this film permeates no matter the location, putting the viewer face to face with Eric’s nature and convictions, making it impossible to set aside.  The soundtrack and score drive home the brooding nature of the film, but give it a life not necessarily present in the other works of Cronenberg (or at least not the works I am familiar with).

Robert Pattison displays a huge sense of entitlement and tone-deaf nature that suits the disconnected nature of a billionaire from the greater populous, using the performance as both a distancing mechanism and a backhanded way to gain sympathy as the story progresses.  Sarah Gadon shows the unconditional love of wanting her husband to succeed, but the heartbreak of knowing she made the mistake of marrying an unfaithful man.  Zeljko Kecojevic gives the feeling that he is not on the up and up despite being on top of his job, making him a shadow antagonist with his tethered presence.  Eric’s staff is made up of people who mirror ideals more so than characters : Juliette Binoche represents temptation and limitation, Jay Baruchel echoes the burden of manifesting dreams, Samantha Morton shows that success is a state of constant worry and planning, while Philip Nozuka represents dealing with issues rather than letting them control you.  Patricia McKenzie plays another distracting temptation, but one that is controlling the situation rather than allowing Eric to fulfill his whims.  Appearances by Paul Giamatti, Mathieu Amairic, Kevin Durand, K’Naan and Bob Bainborough round things out.

For those in belief that Robert Pattison is a one-note actor, not only can a film like Cosmopolis dispel these thoughts, but it also shows that he has the qualities needed to portray a character like Bruce Wayne.  I’m definitely curious about the future of the Batman character in light of DC’s recent history, but I do believe this casting is a step in the right direction.
