Matilda Stoughton de Jaudenes (1794). Gilbert Stuart (American, 1755–1828). Oil on canvas. MMOA.
Matilda Stoughton de Jaudenes (b. 1778), daughter of Boston's Spanish consul John Stoughton, married Josef de Jaudenes y Nebot at sixteen. This portrait, painted about the time of her 1794 marriage as a companion to her husband's, depicts her in a richly ornamented costume typical of Hispanic noble dress of the day. The Stoughton family coat of arms, on the left, and the writing under it, were added later by another artist.
