What do you like is the song that Gou, Izusu and Ayumu sing!!! and its the first time that Free! has a a trios in their character songs and i think that's cool

I have no idea what the song is saying (with none of the songs tbh) but i bet it has to do with muscles lol a topic of importance!! (although of course I would love it if it were just about their friendship ❤️)

the song was very cute and catchy, I don't know how to recognize the voices of each one but they sounded very good together!! The vibe of the song reminded me of "Perfume" (a jpop group I like) and the rhythm was quite pleasant, something chill.

By the end I was already humming the chorus 🎶~What do you like ~🎶

It's a concept piece for a prequel that I want to write but probably will never get around to, so here's how it looks in my head instead... I've a long way to go with colouring, textures and backgrounds but I'm relatively happy with how it's turned out :)

thoughts on Free! Iwatobi Swim Club

by your one and only casual anime watcher, who is now dipping their toes in sports anime

god, free! was amazing!

it's been a while since i enjoyed an anime this much, and i think this proves that i should watch more sports anime. all of the ones i watched so far were really good (sk8 the infinity and yuri on ice), something is up with this genre

so anyway, free!. i love swimming and water so it was already an ideal premise for me. the characters are all super likeable and have different sides to them. i wouldn't say they are perfect, but what i can give them, is that they all feel like genuine friends, who enjoy spending time together.

REI WAS THE TRUE MVP. this boy saw that the other three had problems with rin and went "alright, lemme fix this" AND THEN HE DID!! nah, for real tho, i think without him, rin's reconciliation with the rest wouldn't happen. i appreciated that rei did this not only for the sake of his team, but also for himself. i also liked that he openly communicated: "i want to know what happened between you, i am a part of the team and i don't want to be left out". maybe i haven't seen a good anime in a while, but i felt like this openess was really refreshing. i love him sm <3

BUT, i was scared shitless when this mf SWAM OUT INTO THE OCEAN AT NIGHT??!?!?! LIKE BRO. at the start of their training camp i saw where this was going, but i calmed down after makoto reassured rei, i was like "phew, crisis averted" AND IT WAS NOT. they all could have died and i was not okay. and then they just forgot. about that traumatic experience. cool cool

really, every character has something that i like about them. but my favourites are definitely rei and makoto <33

rei cause he is a sweetie, who likes pretty things, is overly logical but very in tune with his emotions and cmon, how could i hate him. he is basically me (i want his glasses). and makoto, cause. ya know. have you seen him??? cutie pie lil blorbo (ᵍʳᵉᵉⁿ ᶜᵒˡᵒᵘʳ ᶜʰᵃʳᵃᶜᵗᵉʳˢ,,,)

and the ending, omg it was so cute!! i was so hyped! THEY WON, and then they got disqualified, BUT THEY WON FRIENDSHIP. seeing rin smiling again with his friends brought tears to my eyes

from supporting characters i rly like Gou and Amakata! Gou is just so determined, supportive and unwilling to give up – she wanted to see her brother happy again and she made it happen! what a good sister <33 for ms amakata i thought she was super funny and sweet. her not always accurate quoting, sunny demeanor and how dead set she was on keeping her past secret lmao

all in all, i enjoyed this series a lot! time for free! eternal summer hehe

(also, when i started watching i was like hmmmm, yeah haru and rin, then in the middle i went on ao3, saw the haru and makoto fics and was like "HE???" like i didn't think about them before but now i can't stop! but i ship both and also all three of them, that would be fun. in the grand scheme of things it doesn't matter as much to me: i just enjoy the dynamics they have, regardless of if they are romantic or platonic; they all love each other is what im sayin <3)

He was literally the one who got fed up with the miscommunication problems between Rin and Haru (and well, the rest of the team) and confronted Rin to tell him his truths, and if it wasn't for that NOTHING WOULD HAVE BEEN RESOLVED

He was the one who told Haru the right words for him to realize his feelings ("I want to swim with Rin") and gave in if put in the relay (THE RELAY THAT WAS SO SO IMPORTANT FOR THE TEAM AND AAAAAAH)

Great swimming teacher, literally thanks to him is that Nagisa, Haru and Makoto know how to swim well in the first place

Makoto's father figure (this is more of a hc and something I wish would have been explored more but I'm still putting it in)

He always believed that the boys could go far and gave them his full support when the swimming club was just starting

Provided pizza to the team (very important lmao)

He literally witnessed the entire angst moment between Rin and Haru (when Rin camel back from Australia im talking abt THE MOMENT) and if it wasn't for him, Makoto would never have found out what happened

rebuilt the swim club and is literally helping the new generation to enjoy swimming

it makes me impossibly soft thinking of how much admiration rin and gou probably have for their mother for raising them on her own after their father's passing. i was listening to kings & queens by ava max and the line "to all of the queens who are fighting alone, baby, you're not dancing on your own" immediately made me think of their mother (or just single mothers/parents in general). you, my love, are a beautiful, powerful group of people.

—Haru would never admit he has a crush on Gou.

Haru always wondered,

Why his eyes never stopped staring — at the silhouette of the young girl, her small body, which he could seemingly grasp, hug and kiss so easily.

No, the last was too much.

But Haru would always wonder.

What was so special about Matsuoka Gou?

She was beautiful, indeed.

Always smiling, obviously.

Cheerful, she had a positive aura like the sun in the morningy.

But was that a reason for Haru to secretly stare at her all the time? Sometimes, he was grateful to be able to hide his feelings behind that flat, emotionless expression. Gou would never notice if Haru's cheeks blushed slightly when the girl accidentally touched his hand, nor would she know if Haru's lips parted slightly when she complimented his triceps.

Gou wouldn't know, she was probably too dense.

Yes, that's a good thing. Haru didn't want others to know his feelings either, especially Gou.

Of course, no one should have realized that he secretly harboured a slight interest in Gou. It seemed he had underestimated the world too much — more precisely his childhood best friend, Tachibana Makoto. "You seem to be paying a lot of attention to Gou lately, Haru." Haru didn't know how his best friend knew when he was so sure he had hidden that slight interest well. It seemed that nice guys were hard to fool.

There was no way Haru would admit it.

"She's our manager as well as our friend, is it wrong if I pay attention to her?" Haru replied in an indifferent tone, he ate his mackerel calmly. Makoto smiled faintly like a mother who had just found out her son was lying. "You clenched your fists when Nagisa hugged her."

"Nagisa should learn about people's personal space."

"You gave Rei a sharp look when he complimented Gou's ponytail pretty."

"His compliments sounded perverted."

Makoto laughed. "Well, if you don't like her I guess it wouldn't hurt if I asked her out, right Haru?"

Haru bit his chopsticks hard. Makoto laughed innocently.

Fuck, he just walked into his trap.

Haru was silent, though he found it a little annoying to hear Makoto laughing innocently when Haru was a little embarrassed about being caught. Makoto stopped laughing, it seemed that he noticed Haru who was silent like a statue, his soft eyes looked at Haru, but Haru chose to look away. "So, you like her Haru?" Makoto asked, just to be sure.

Haru was silent, for about a few minutes before answering. "A little."

A little, you mean a lot, isn't it? Makoto thought to himself in confusion, it was so hard to get Haru to tell him honestly how he felt.

"You should ask her out then."

Haru was silent, again. "No way, I'm graduating next year." His answer sounded a little hesitant, there was an implied sadness with anxiety. "But, are you really okay with leaving it at that? Is it okay for her to date someone else and not you?" Makoto seemed so determined to convince Haru to declare his love for Gou, of course he wanted to but it wasn't easy.

But, the thought of Gou dating someone else and he just looking on, wondering if things would be different if he was more honest was much harder to accept and annoying, yet he found it irritating too.

Haru placed his chopsticks on top of his lunch box. "I'll take her out for a walk this week."

"Good luck, Haru." Makoto smiled, he secretly proud that his best friend can be more honest and at least trying confessing his feelings.

Well, anyway Haru could win that swimming race and getting the first place, why not try to win Matsuoka Gou's heart too?

—Epilogue.

Well, of course. Haru forgot his biggest obstacle.

"What are you doing in front of my house and asking about my sister, Haru?"

"Onii-chan!"
