The Little Known History of World War II's All-Black, All-Female Battalion In 1927, an unlikely friendship arose between educator and civil rights activist Mary McLeod Bethune and future First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, based on a shared belief in the power of education. When Franklin D. Roosevelt became president in 1933, Bethune served as an advisor on minority issues, and eventually was named Director of Negro Affairs in 1939. Her work with the administration led to the creation of the Black Cabinet, an informal group of advisors who worked on issues facing Black communities across the United States. The Black Cabinet helped the Roosevelt administration draft executive orders that ended the exclusion of Black Americans in the Army during World War II. In 1944, with the support of the First Lady, Bethune pushed for the admittance of Black women in the military, through inclusion in the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), a branch of the Army created in 1942. Though there was a backlash against having women in uniform from conservative elements in military leadership, tens of thousands of women were trained in a variety of non-combat specialties that were thought appropriate for women at the time: switchboard operation, baking, mechanics, stenography, postal work, and more. All were critical to the operation of the Army during wartime. Sending and receiving mail, for example, was a lifeline for soldiers, and the only way to stay connected to the friends and families they left behind. In 1945 alone, more than 3.3 billion pieces of mail went through the military postal service. Around 8 million Americans were stationed in Europe that year. The task of organizing and delivering all that mail was daunting, and a shortage of qualified postal workers led to a massive backlog. Army officers reported that the undelivered mail was hurting morale. Something had to be done, and a unique WAC battalion answered the call. The task of sifting through this growing stack of letters and packages—some of which had been mailed years before—was given to the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the only all-Black, all-female battalion to serve overseas during World War II. The 6888th—nicknamed “Six Triple Eight” and led by Major Charity Adams Earley—was originally expected to sort through 7 million pieces of mail and packages in Birmingham, England, over the course of six months. They did the job in three. During World War II, more than a million Black American men and women served in all branches of the U.S. armed forces. For many, it was a way to prove their belonging in a country that had mistreated and excluded them for so long. Segregation laws were still being strongly enforced. “A lot of Black Americans were also thinking about what it means to be drafted into segregated military branches,” says Matthew Delmont, a historian at Dartmouth College and author of Half American: The Epic Story of African Americans Fighting World War II at Home and Abroad. In a famous letter sent to the Pittsburgh Courier in January 1942, 26-year-old James G. Thompson asked, “Should I sacrifice my life to live half American?” For some Black men and women of the armed forces, fighting for freedom abroad became a stepping stone to fighting for freedom at home. In 1943, when the WAC began admitting Black women, the War Department said that it would continue to follow Army policy and maintain a 10 percent quota of Black women admitted. In their book A Black Women’s History of the United States, Daina Ramey Berry and Kali Nicole Gross estimate that 4,000 Black women signed up, even with the knowledge that they would be segregated. The WAC had successfully fought for women to be classified under the same rank as soldiers, and the branch shed its “auxiliary” status after a year in existence. However, while white women were getting medical training, Black women were relegated to only training in administrative work and cooking. According to Berry and Gross, Black women soldiers were ordered to “scrub and wash floors, wash dishes, and do all the dirty work.” When white WAC groups started getting deployed to serve in Europe, civil rights organizations, with the continued push from Mary McLeod Bethune, advocated for greater representation of Black women overseas. The War Department obliged. Major Charity Adams Earley was the first Black woman to become an officer, appointed in July 1942. The Army, like civilian life at the time, was still segregated, and Major Adams worked in a unit with other Black women at the Fort Des Moines Provisional Army Officer Training School in Iowa. In January 1945, the 26-year-old flew on a C-54 cargo plane to England, her mission a “secret” one that she would only be told about when she landed. Upon arrival, Major Adams was appointed commander of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion and told to prepare to welcome the 855 Black American women who would be tasked with organizing the undelivered mail sitting in warehouses in Birmingham. The women of the battalion were also not told about their task until they arrived. After months of training in Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia, the women of the 6888th sailed to Glasgow, Scotland, on February 3, 1945. The journey on SS Île de France was fraught. While crossing the Atlantic Ocean, the ship was confronted by German U-boats, which forced the French ocean liner to change its course several times. In her book, One Woman’s Army: A Black Officer Remembers the WAC, Major Adams, while waiting to welcome her battalion in Glasgow, says, “the sight of two officers whom they [the women of the 6888th] knew, standing at dockside waiting to greet them, was like a breath of fresh air. Thanks to seasickness, the salt-water spray, and the limited personal conveniences, the group was a very unhappy looking lot.”Once the 6888th reached Birmingham by train, the women found themselves dwarfed by massive piles of mail in the facilities, which included six airplane hangars. On paper, the task, though huge, seemed simple enough—organize the packages and letters to be delivered to the right people—but there were complications. In poorly lit and unheated buildings, they had to sort through mail that sometimes only contained first names, nicknames, and common names like “Robert Smith.” They worked in shifts and processed an average of 65,000 pieces of mail per day until the job was finished, ahead of schedule. The next deployment was to Rouen, France, where they also finished clearing out a backlog of two to three years mail, with the help of French civilians and German prisoners of war. When the war ended in September 1945, the 6888th was sent to work in Paris. But there were fewer women, and morale suffered under an influx of mail for the holidays. They faced another challenge—the theft of small packages, and they had to work with civilians to track them down. By February 1946, the remaining women of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion returned to the United States and the unit was disbanded at Fort Dix, New Jersey. By the end of their mission, the battalion had sorted through 17 million pieces of mail. Even though Major Adams was promoted to lieutenant colonel upon her return, the 6888th was given no public recognition or welcome ceremony. The women of the 6888th report that they felt as though they were treated better abroad than they were at home. The experience of returning home was incredibly demoralizing for many of the Black men and women who spent years risking their lives abroad. “Most white Americans, when the military part of the war ended, wanted to go back to the way things used to be,” Delmont says. “It was the exact opposite of what Black Americans wanted when they returned home.” While white veterans were commemorated and welcomed with celebration, Black veterans and service workers, including the women of the 6888th, felt as though they had been cast aside. “They got home and people acted like they hadn’t done anything, like they hadn’t also sacrificed to win the war,” says Delmont. Members of the battalion received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Women’s Army Corps Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal, but wider recognition for their accomplishments didn’t come for another 60 years. In 2009, three former members of the unit, Alyce Dixon, Mary Ragland, and Gladys Shuster Carter, attended a commendation ceremony at the Military Women’s Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. On November 30, 2018, a monument dedicated to the 6888th was built at the Buffalo Soldier Monument Park in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, consisting of a 25-inch bronze bust of commanding officer Major Adams. The back panel has the names of the 800-plus women who were assigned to the unit, by state of origin. On March 14, 2022, President Joe Biden signed a bill awarding the battalion the Congressional Gold Medal. The legacy of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion goes beyond their incredible work during World War II. The women and their story have been included in exhibits, books, documentaries, and even a forthcoming Netflix film directed by Tyler Perry, called Six Triple Eight and starring Kerry Washington and Oprah Winfrey. Even as Jim Crow laws persisted at home, the 6888th provided an intimate and necessary connection between soldiers on the front line and their families on the home front. They left their mark in hearts and minds. https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/all-black-women-battalion-wwii-6888th

Heidi was my favorite part of the show. There were some very funny parts to the show, especially if you are a theater buff. There are about 10 mins of total blackouts, which is mostly a chunk in within the first 13 minutes. Depsite that, a nice capture and the audience was very into the show. There is washout, as it’s a full stage shot, but it is very very watchable. About 8 minutes is missing right before the Act 1 finale. Column, Costumed Figure
Date: 8th–9th century
Geography: Mexico, Mesoamerica, Campeche
Culture: Maya
This limestone column, carved in medium relief, depicts an ornately dressed individual and a dwarf. The central figure is most likely a Maya ruler, and he wears an enormous tiered headdress with feathers splaying to the tops and sides of the column. He also wears a collar with three images of human heads, and a long beaded necklace. In his right hand, he carries a hooked blade, and his left arm is hidden behind a shield with a central knotted element. Most of his body is covered by a long apron made of square mosaic elements, and he wears high-backed sandals on his feet. On the right side of the monument stands a dwarf who wears a columnar headdress and large earflare assemblages, or ornaments worn in the earlobe (see 1994.35.591a, b for an example of an earflare set, and 1979.206.1047 for individuals wearing earflare assemblages). Carved columns are not common in ancient Maya art, but they do appear in the Puuc region of the Yucatan Peninsula in the eighth and ninth centuries AD. Another column in the Worcester Art Museum in Massachusetts—also depicting a standing ruler with dwarves—is thought to be the pair to this column; together, the two columns probably flanked a doorway. The doorway was most likely topped by a carved lintel, which depicted two seated individuals on either side of a deity face from which water lilies emerge. The unfinished and irregular rear portion of the column suggests it may have been embedded in a wall rather than freestanding. In its original setting, this column would have been visible to people outside and entering the building, which was probably a long, low range building common in the Puuc region. The column would originally have been brightly colored, and the remains of red pigment are still visible on the ruler’s face. The costume and accessories of the ruler refer to themes of warfare, sacrifice, and agricultural fertility. The ruler wears an enormous headdress that represents a monstrous zoomorphic head. Two central rosettes are stacked above the ruler’s head. From the upper rosette, a trapezoidal element emerges; this is the monster’s nose, and on either side of it are its eyes, with curlicue pupils. Two curved fangs are located between the upper and lower rosettes. Although there is no lower jaw on this headdress, similar headdresses on other monuments do include a lower jaw, and ancient viewers of this monument would have understood the ruler’s head as emerging from the mouth of the monster. The square plaques of the mosaic apron were probably meant to represent jade. Jade plaques also appear on the top part of the headdress between the upper and lower rosette. This headdress is derived from a motif known as the War Serpent headdress. Originally from the great Central Mexican city of Teotihuacan, the War Serpent headdress was adopted by Maya leaders beginning around 400 A.D., when Teotihuacan influence spread through the central Maya area. Classic Maya rulers wore the War Serpent headdress as a sign of military strength and to associate themselves with powerful "outsider" forces. By the time this column was carved, probably in the ninth century A.D., the headdress was a common motif that may not have been explicitly associated with Teotihuacan. That this headdress was still associated with warfare, however, is indicated by the objects the ruler carries in his hands. The obsidian blade in the ruler’s right hand is shown as a hooked implement. Similar objects are carried by rulers on other monuments from this part of the Maya world, including the column in the Worcester Art Museum (see 1978.412.195 for an elaborate figural obsidian blade). The blade carries multiple meanings. It may refer to the rain god, Chahk, who uses an axe to break the clouds and make rain. Ensuring the continuation and fertility of agricultural cycles was one of the central duties of Maya rulers; wielding an axe, then, refers to this important role. The obsidian weapon may also be a sacrificial blade. On similar columns from the Puuc region, including columns from Sayil Structure 4B and an unprovenanced column in the Ethnologisches Museum in Berlin, rulers carry sacrificial blades with globular objects at the tip that may represent human hearts. These blades emphasize military sacrifice as one of the important duties of Maya kings. In the ruler’s left hand—presumably, since we cannot see the hand itself—is a shield. The central design in the shield is made up of crossed bands that may relate to the woven mat symbol, associated with authority and the right to rule. Other elements of this ruler’s costume point to an interest in lineage. The ruler’s collar features one frontal head, facing toward the viewer, with three dangling celts (see Celt 1994.35.356). An additional head, in profile, adorns each shoulder (the head on the left is less visible due to damage to the monument). Maya rulers often wore the names or visages of their ancestors in their costumes, physically linking themselves to their royal predecessors and emphasizing their own dynastic legitimacy. These heads would most likely have been made of jade and strung together with jade beads and plaques to create the thick collar we see on the monument today. Below the collar, a long beaded necklace ends in a central bar pendant. Water lilies emerge from either side of the central bar and from the bottom, echoing the water lilies on the lintel that once accompanied this column. On the right side of the column, the dwarf is framed by feathers from the ruler’s headdress. Dwarves appear in a variety of contexts in Maya art, but they are represented most prominently as courtly attendants. On Maya ceramics, dwarves hold mirrors so that rulers can see themselves in their finery (see Mirror-Bearer 1979.206.1063 for a sculptural version of this motif), while jade plaques depict dwarves seated next to rulers. Dwarves are particularly common in monumental art from the Puuc area, where they appear frequently on columns and jambs in architectural settings. On this monument, the bent arm of the dwarf may represent a gesture associated with dance. The dwarf, the costume of the ruler, and the obsidian blade suggest that this scene depicts a ritual dance performance. Other sculptures from the Puuc area, such as Xcalumkin Jamb 4, Xcocha Columns 2 and 3, and the columns from Sayil Structure 4B1, depict richly dressed, dancing individuals holding shields and obsidian blades. Each of the two columns from Sayil also depicts a dwarf standing next to the dancing ruler, and the column in the Worcester Art Museum features two dancing dwarves. Dance was an important ritual action in ancient Maya life, and was particularly important to Maya kings, who used the movement of their body to express royal authority, communicate with supernatural powers, and symbolize community and cultural ideals. The architectural setting of this column in a doorway, moreover, suggests that dancers may have moved in and out of this building, and that the building itself may have served as a setting for ritual dances related to agricultural fertility, warfare, and sacrifice. While the composition of this monument is largely symmetrical, a closer look reveals subtle differences that indicate at least two different artists worked on this sculpture. For example, the rectangular flanges on either side of the ruler’s face display different sculptural approaches. On the left of the face, the fret motif is orderly and restrained, and the curved lines of the feathers emerging from the flange are incised with delicate lines. On the right side, the sturdy fret motif and the lack of incised lines on the feathers indicate a sculptor interested in conveying solidity and weight. The outer line of the eyes on the headdress, too, curves downward on the right, but not on the left. The column at the Worcester Art Museum also displays this asymmetry, suggesting that the irregularities in this column reflect regular artistic practice. Finally, the damaged faces on this monument hint at the power of carved stone in the ancient Maya world. The eyes, nose and mouth of the ruler have been intentionally damaged, as has part of the face of the dwarf. For the Maya, carved stone monuments were not static representations of the people they depicted. Instead, such sculptures shared the identity and essence of their subjects. A column with an image of a ruler, in other words, would have been understood as an extension of that ruler and that ruler’s holiness, or ch’ulel. As such, sculptures were powerful agentive beings, and that power required careful maintenance and negotiation. Chipping off the faces on stone monuments would have offered one way of terminating that power. Ancient defacers paid particular attention to the nose, which was a conduit for holy breath; destroying the nose may have been considered an effective ritual closure (see also Maya Monument L.1970.78, where the profile of the ruler Yo’nal Ahk was also defaced in antiquity). Despite the damaged faces, this monument clearly conveys the power of the ruler as a warrior, sacrificer, and dancer, ensuring the continuation of life cycles through ritual action and the presentation of military strength. Florida moves to remove felons with unpaid debts from voting rolls
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The state’s elections director, Maria Matthews, told local elections supervisors on Tuesday that they would begin to receive files on convicted felons “whose potential ineligibility is based on not having satisfied the legal financial obligations of their sentence.” The email added that if local officials received information about registered voters who are ineligible from sources other than the Florida Department of State, “you should act on it.”
The move comes after more than 1 million Floridians with felony convictions had their voting rights restored through a constitutional amendment approved by voters in 2018. But Florida’s GOP-controlled Legislature later passed a bill saying ex-felons must settle all financial obligations such as fines, fees and restitution before their voting rights are restored.
A federal judge ruled in May that that state law amounted to an unconstitutional “pay-to-vote system,” but in September a federal appeals court overturned that decision.
Local officials told Appradab that the new directions from the state might not impact voter rolls for the 2020 election.
Leon County Supervisor of Elections Mark Earley said Friday that he “wasn’t really surprised that they’re starting up the process of felon review,” but that the lengthy removal process would prevent his office from taking anyone off the rolls by Election Day.
He said the county has seven days to send a letter to the registered voter and then the voter has 30 days to respond. “And if they don’t respond we have to advertise … so there are various different requirements that would prevent us from taking someone off before November 3.”
Though he didn’t think many Florida voters would actually be removed before Election Day, Earley said it’s possible that if felons with court debts end up voting, their ballots could be challenged after the election.
Florida Secretary of State Laurel Lee, a Republican appointee, said in a statement that the federal appeals court ruling makes it clear that “the law, with respect to legal financial obligations, is now clear, and there is no legal basis for the department to ignore the obligations spelled out in Florida Statutes.”
Lee said her department is legally required to review information from a number of sources related to felons whose voting rights have not been restored, and if that information is credible and reliable, that is shared with local supervisors.
A coalition of liberal-leaning voting rights and advocacy groups, including the American Civil Liberties Union, Brennan Center for Justice at NYU Law and the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, condemned the state’s efforts to remove people with felony convictions and legal financial obligations.
“Florida’s proposed action is simply an attempt to scare people with felony convictions away from voting and constitutes voter intimidation — par for the course in Florida,” the groups’ statement said.

Some quick comments:
The Natural really knocked me out - even if it is a definite letdown to learn to care about a (however flawed) protagonist so deeply throughout all his modern-day epic, only to leave him disgraced and dishonored and defeat at the end. That shit is unfair in an author. Yeah, yeah, modern-day Greek tragedy, yadda yadda, ya weren’t exactly subtle about it Mr. Malamud, yeah I got it. I don’t blame the movie adaptation for changing the ending. That’s just kindness to your audience. (I do blame the movie adaptation for making Roy Hobbs such a plaster saint and monkeying about to make one of the romance subplots really improbable, but those are very different and honestly more forgivable crimes.) Damn. I meant to compliment this book? The prose and the vision and the scope really were pretty fabulous.
Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI was amazing and educational and pulled no punches. Just fascinating. Probably my favorite nonfiction this year. Might be my favorite in the whole lot, though that’s a tougher race.
Everything I Never Told You low-key sucked. I don’t know how Celeste Ng is so popular. Same as I don’t understand how Jodi Picoult (whom this reminded me of a LOT) is so popular and so rich. Life’s unfair.
Who the hell is Wilkie Collins? Well, now that I know, my question is Why did I never hear of him? I’m somewhat of a classic Brit lit geek, and I hadn’t known who he was (a contemporary/admirer of Charles Dickens) and what he did (gave us one of the earliest examples of the Great Detective trope - and the book I read was really genuinely fascinating in a Dickensian-but-more-straightforward-and-an-even-broader-vision way.)
One Crazy Summer was my favorite kids/YA book on the list. A real gem and a joy to teach a unit on. Also cool: My students got to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panthers. And we were doing it alongside Marvel Studios. Teaching win of the year.
I prefer Villette to Jane Eyre. Villette was badass in its sheer weirditude. Hell, I think I preferred Shirley to Jane. #heresy #I’llSeeMyselfOut #ButHeyTheNewestMovieAdaptationWasReallySuperb
Similar to the above: So, I figured it was time to finally read something by Agatha Christie. God knows I’ve read many more obscure mystery writers. Time to check out the Queen. It was disappointing: The Secret Adversary had a slow and boring start. By the end, however, I found myself enjoying it, and I decided to give ol’ Agatha a fairer shot by going to one of her “classic” tales. Reader, the “Tommy and Tuppence” book was far more interesting than The Orient Express. The latter had a very original concept, and gets the fame, but the former had an ending that was emotionally satisfying. Neither of the plots were very credible, and I do have some standards in that department. But, at the end of the day, awesome and endearing characterization = Life.

SONGS THAT SHAPED ME
What made me want to be a writer? It wasn't novels, essays, prose, or even poems. All of my inspiration has always come from the lyrics of singer-songwriters. They were the ones who taught me the beauty of words from one person, and how rhyming and rhythm goes a long way to carry your heart. Something spare and to the bone, as little barrier between words and ears as possible. You can hear my style a mile off in these songs, how they've come together to shape me in strange ways. A desire to be absolutely honest and heartwaking all along, to play with words and see the joy no matter the darkness of it. These songs made me brave enough to let words take me where they wanted, trusting that the meaning would rise to the surface. In all I do, I'm always trying to live up to the fire and magic of these songs.

Goals for the season:
This year, XC kicked off with a blast, with both the boys' and girls' teams having high potential, said the Athletic Council. They also think the girls' team has had a strong start, and continues to improve as meets go by.
Coach Peter Alden says that "this is possibly the best start of the season for the girls' team in the history of the running program here at SAS…[you can] attribute this to some veteran leadership coming from Renee Pearce, Evian Chai and Gloria Liu. He also says that "the addition of freshman Jennifer ..... has been huge.  We've also finally got some depth with girls at the no. five, six, and seventh position". As cross country is based on team points, a solid pack of seven girls could really boost the team placing wise, and put them in a place for success.
As for the boys, Alden says that "the boys' team is rebuilding and, in addition to Hanson and Raj's consistent sub-20 minute efforts at the 5km distance, we have at least 5 boys who are close to breaking 20 minutes." According to the Athletic Council, the boys' team have a lot of potential to really come together as a group and gain a competitive edge through consistent performance.
Speaking of potential, coach Marcia Adams says that the cross country team is "a young team (many year 9, 10, and 11's)[…] We have a lot of potential to be very competitive". Furthermore, competition is not all that makes this year's XC team so special.
"Our group of runners from the veterans to first-timers have made this a special team of XC runners for 2017," says coach Sarah Bartlett. "Not only do we have talent, but also a wonderful sense team spirit and support for each other,"which will surely be helpful in helping and motivating both teams to achieve their goals of doing well at APAC. All coaches have high hopes for this year's cross country team, and are focused on getting ready for the final race at APAC.
Along with the coaches positive outlook on the progression of this season, the runners themselves are more motivated than ever to train hard and go for gold. Co-captain Jacob Earley says that "Raj and Hanson do a really god job of securing the lead and the rest of the boys can stick really close together. We form a very formidable pack that works both on passing people and encouraging each other to speed up when the time is right," echoing the coaches thoughts about teamwork really being a strength of this year's team. Overall, although the path to APAC sure to be filled with sweat, hard work, and maybe even tears, the runners are more than willing to push themselves to the limit in order to secure that APAC placing.
Finally, Co-captain Raj Rana has some words of motivation to share, saying that "if you feel like schoolwork is tough, go out and watch us train."

Goals for the season:
The Athletics Council interviewed the varsity baseball team head coach Kirk Irwin, as well as the captain, Clifford Lin, about their goals and thoughts of the season.
As a coach, Irwin strongly believes in the talent and skills the baseball team has this year to be successful, especially before the China Cup tournament.
According to Irwin, the most important goal this season is to "make sure the new players and the young players get enough playing time in games so they can learn what they need to improve on." Since baseball is a sport where "most exceptional players have been playing since they were young," naturally, it would be quite challenging for new players to be picking it up in high school.
After a major tournament consisting of three games against CA, ISB, and SASPD in Japan, the initial goal was to find out "how players can deal with playing numerous games in a short amount of time," says Irwin. "Everyone worked hard and was able to take the physical toll a short and congested tournament can have, however, even though we did not achieve what we wanted with regards to wins," he continues, "we still learnt valuable information about our opponents and of course ourselves."
Though there has been a few bumps on the road,  Irwin believes that "If the team gets into the championship bracket (consisting of the top four teams, out of eight), then this will give them a chance to step up to win APAC for the very first time."
With goals of winning both China Cup and APAC in mind, their captain Clifford Lin is "definitely most excited about China Cup," since it is his very last time traveling with the baseball team after being on the team since freshman year.
To many, the season looks bright for the baseball team, with lots of new faces and potential to win APAC.
Especially since "the baseball season is one of the best times of the year," says Irwin. "I'm truly looking forward to building relationships with both coaches and players that will go beyond the baseball field." He believes the most enjoyable aspect about the sport is "the excitement of game time, the thrill of victory and even the agony of defeat" because through all that process, relationships develop and grow, memories form and the team gets stronger.
Over the years, Lin believes, "the most enjoyable thing was the players on the team, it's been an honor and a pleasure to play with some of the best ball players in APAC."

Super-APAC (occurs once every four years):
UNIS, Hanoi, Vietnam
October 18-22
Goals for the season:
The Athletics Council interviewed the head coach of the varsity boys’ volleyball team, Matthew Zeman, about their goals and performances for this season. Since this year is Super-APAC, a special APAC event hosted once every four years, the players are eager to play at their peak performance. From a coach’s perspective, Zeman believes that the team must build more chemistry and have more confidence in one another if they are to improve.
“This may be one of the most talented volleyball squads we’ve had in years,” says Zeman, “but if they can’t trust each other and depend on one another, talent is of little consequence”.
To do so, the players have employed a plethora of strategies to develop for them the sort of teamwork that they need.
“Our athletes have been focused on building team culture this year,” says Zeman, “we have created a set of team norms and structures to help build this culture, and we have embraced struggles as learning opportunities.”
In the status quo, Zeman says that the team has “the ability to make dynamic plays and wow the crowd,” but their “basic skills cannot be taken for granted.” Though they may not be perfect, each player is playing their positions well.
“Our team has done an excellent job of playing to our strengths and responding to challenges,” speaks Zeman, “when the pressure is on and we need a serve, pass, set or hit, we’ve been getting it.” He adds that “the new guys on the team have made great strides well” and that “the future of the program looks very bright.”
Many think that if there is going to be a year where the SAS Puxi boys’ volleyball team takes home the Super-APAC gold, it is going to be this year.
Ben Wang, the team’s captain, says that it has “always been a motivator of [his] to win a Super-APAC tournament”: he’s been doing so “since the fourth-grade”. However, now “it has become much clearer that is not the only reason” why he plays volleyball. He says he plays “for the eleven other guys” on the team “that he can gladly call family”. As their captain, Wang believes that after “all the hard work [they] have put in and all the heartbreak [they] have been through,” the team will emerge as champions of this year’s Super-APAC.
Zeman is also optimistic about Super-APAC, saying that “based on [their] performances,” the team has “the talent and composure to win APAC." Now, they just need to “focus on taking it point by point.”

Super-APAC (occurs once every four years):
Brent, Manila, Phillipines
October 18-22
Goals for the season:
The girls’ varsity volleyball team is seeking to attain another victory at their Super-APAC tournament this year with a fresh, new team. The head coach of the team, Danielle Sheppard, shares some of her thoughts on their prospects.
“The team’s focus (currently) is to perform well at Super-APAC,” says Sheppard. “We want to perform to the best of our ability as a team and individually,”
The team seeks to achieve this through practice and identifying the areas they need to improve. Their roster this year consists mainly of experienced players, coupled in with a few new members--the lineup contains the most talent SAS has had in years, according to the coaches. Much of this talent springs from the new additions, and the team aims to capitalize that by aiding them with the experience of the older players. According to Sheppard, the team has been working to reach their peak after China Cup, as there is little time between now and Super-APAC. “The girls have performed well, and we are working on being at our peak”, notes Sheppard.
Karina Kaypaghian, the girls’ captain, is optimistic about Super-APAC. The amount of experience on this year’s team is a formula for success. “Our goals for Super-APAC this year is to come out in first place,” she says. “We are a new team this year but we are a motivated group with talent to do so. We have a lot of seniors on our team this so we want to end our last seasons as Super-APAC champs”.
Another one of Kaypaghian’s fueling factors is her desire for revenge. “We lost to Brent last year in finals,” she says, “so this our chance for redemption at their home court.”
With the team’s current grit and determination, winning this Super-APAC this year does not seem like such a far-fetched idea. The coaches and players are all eager to see what they can achieve this year in Manila.

Super-APAC (occurs once every four years):
WAB, Beijing, China
October 18-22
Goals for the season:
This year is Super-APAC, which means that the SAS Varsity Tennis team is working harder than ever to improve their playing skills, according to the team. Their head coach, Philip Kittower, aims to bring some positive reforms to the group, noting some major benefits.
“This season the team has focused on working more as a large team of 24 rather than as 4 separate teams,” Kittower notes about the change.
Until this year, the tennis teams have been traveling separately, and coordination between them – both on and off the court – has always been hard.
“We travel and compete as a co-ed team and a key part of our APAC competition is mixed doubles,” says Kittower, “so it's important that players have experience with both singles and doubles.”
Kittower hopes that players can gather experience as they play, making the efforts of the coaches ever more so valuable. “Coaches Wolf, Ayow, and Musk put a lot of thought into developing skills and tactics,” says Kittower. “Every player is different, and we encourage players to focus on figuring out for themselves how to improve.”
The players’ skills have also been steadily improving, making Kittower optimistic about the future. “It’s great to see the junior girls and boys team come along,” he remarks. “Overall players practice well and it’s gratifying to see the energy that they bring.”
With Super-APAC coming up, senior Tina Yin has set a couple of goals for herself and her teammates. “As a team, we’ve been playing very well this year,” says Yin. “At China Cup this year, we came in second but the win was so close--we were 2 points away from the championship!” She adds that the team was "really hoping to improve our net game, winning shots, and doubles play in the coming weeks to take APAC by storm.”
In regards to the team’s performances last year, Yin is excited at a chance for redemption. “Since all schools will be at APAC this year, because it’s super, hopefully we’ll play some good comeback matches.”
In October, the team will once again return to Beijing. This time however, they are driven by an ardent desire for their first ever Super-APAC trophy.

Goals for the season:
The Athletics Council interviewed Mr. Andrew, the head coach of the boys' rugby team, regarding the rest of the upcoming season. China Cup was held this year at SAS Puxi, where the boys’ varsity team qualified for the finals for the first time in four years. Looking ahead at the rest of the season, Andrew finds that the season is going excellently but fleeting away yet again.
"The seasons are so short!" he exclaimed. "The roadblocks to the rest of the season are really just limited time."
Riddled with injuries, the rugby team struggled to find one solid team to work with, constantly moving players around different positions and trying to adapt to the situations that were handed to them. "I would like for us to stop getting injured," Andrew said, "and I would also like for us to stop giving away penalties in games." These two were his goals for the rest of the season and his goals at APAC.
"Through higher intensity training sessions and lots of tackling, we hope to continue making progress and repeat the results against ISB and Pudong in APAC," said Andrew.
Being the "most resilient team in the conference," there seems to be a very positive outlook in regards to the rest of the season, especially towards APAC. Through trainings of higher intensity and improving technical skill, the next three weeks of hard work may lead the SAS boys’ varsity rugby team to get a glimpse of victory at APAC this year.

Goals for the season:
The girls’ varsity rugby team was interviewed by the Athletic Council in regards to the rest of the season. In an exclusive interview with Coach Amanda Allen, we were able to gain a better perspective on the future of the team.
"Some of the weaknesses we'd like to improve upon before APAC are our handling skills, and spreading out across the pitch" she said, "What we need to work on is space, and line movement, such as line speed." These skills are of critical difficulty among even top rugby teams; often, teams find themselves crowding together around the area with the ball, or waiting for players to approach them and thus losing ground. Being an invasion game, "line speed, space and line movement" are essential components of the game that when mastered, becomes a game-changing asset.
In order to do so, the girls’ team plans to "train hard, work hard, and stay focused" ahead of APAC.
"With Sofie Fella returning from her 7s tournament in Germany, we need to re-sort our positions looking ahead at APAC," says Allen, "then it's all about fine-tuning our technique and our positions."
It seems to be that the girls’ team looks forward to another APAC championship, achieved through their dedication, hard work, and constant improvement as the progress towards the end of the season.

Poetry Submission Tips From Other Poets
One of my goals for 2017 is to improve my poetry submission routine. I’ve noticed over the years that I get published more when I submit more. Of course, rejections happen more frequently too, but that’s how it works.
Below are poetry submission tips from a few poets over the years on the Poetic Asides blog.
*****

Kristina Marie Darling
“I’ve always been an advocate of starting small. While it’s great to shoot for the top, and send your poems to The New Yorker or The Atlantic Monthly, I think it’s important for writers to realize that there are other ways to build an audience. Publishing in online journals and smaller print magazines can help a writer gain credentials, name recognition, and practice with the submission process. And these are all things that more prestigious journals look for.
“This was certainly the case for me with my poetry criticism. It wasn’t until I had significant experience working with small journals that The Gettysburg Review would consider looking at my clips. And when I wrote my first essay-review for them, I would have been lost without the expertise I gained writing for other magazines.”
(Read full interview with Kristina Marie Darling.)
Jillian Weise
“Slick Daniels sent his poems to one journal at a time while I was shadier about it. I had poems out–who knows which ones and who knows where.
“When the rejections came, we shellacked them to stools & sat on them. This plan did work. I sent the same batch of poems to ten journals a month, for about six months, before The Atlantic acceptance. I didn’t know The Atlantic so I looked it up in Poet’s Market. Now I submit where poets I like publish. If Priscilla Becker or Josh Bell or Matthew Dickman or Tim Earley or Kristi Maxwell or Ben Mirov or Abe Smith or Craig Teicher is there, then I want to be there. It’s like calling ahead of time to see who’s at the party.”
(Read full interview with Jillian Weise.)
Sandra Beasley
“I try to be as systematic as possible in terms of sending out, by conceptualizing “submission packets” of 4-5 poems each: poems that offset each other well, that advance a certain theme or stylistic gesture. I’ll match a packet with whatever I think the editors at that particular magazine will like best. It makes me nervous if I don’t have things out at at least three journals at any given time. As you can probably guess from that statement, I prefer places that consider simultaneous submissions. As someone who has worked at a number of magazines, I just don’t see any reason not to be open to simultaneous.”
(Read full interview with Sandra Beasley.)
Scott Owens
“Mine is a bit of a hybrid system.  I still use the old school technique of creating a folder for each poem and writing on the outside of the folder the date and place the poem was submitted.  Those are filed alphabetically, one drawer for those that are currently out and one drawer for those that are currently not out.  If they get published, they go to the special filing cabinet.  I also keep a pen and paper list of current submissions by journal.  All that is to try and not double submit or bug editors with too many submissions too close together.  Finally, I keep a spreadsheet of my favorite journals and track submission dates and publication dates so that I don’t let any of them get lost in the shuffle.  To anyone technologically-savvy I’m sure this sounds hopelessly archaic, but it’s comfortable for me, and I love the feel of manilla folders.”
(Read full interview with Scott Owens.)
Amorak Huey
“I submit a lot. I get rejected a lot. So many rejections. I started seriously submitting my work in February of 2009, and since then I’ve gotten more than 750 rejections. But also, yeah, I’ve been really lucky to have a good number of poems accepted. I’ve learned not to take the rejections personally—but also to listen to them, to be willing to accept that a poem might not be ready yet, may never be ready.
“I tend to submit in spurts, but my goal is to average eight to ten submissions a month. That means I have to always be writing, and I have to always be submitting. It feels crass to be talking about this, like I’m talking about publishing in this very mercenary way, but for me, there are two steps: 1, creating art; 2, getting that art in front of an audience. The commercial/submitting side can never be more important than the creative side, but it’s important not to ignore that part of it, either.
“I keep pretty careful records, tracking my submissions on Duotrope and an idiosyncratic spreadsheet. I do simultaneous submissions, but never in violation of a journal’s policy. I try to send only to journals where I like their aesthetic or the editors’ work or the poems they’ve published in the past. I no longer send to journals that publish in the Issuu format, because I hate it, but I am equally happy to have my poems appear online or in print. I try to be honest with myself about whether a poem is truly ready to send, so that my ambitious, ego-driven, validation-seeking side doesn’t overrule my poet side.
“Did I answer your question? I’m not sure I have a submission routine so much as a submission philosophy.”
