Most people don't have any understanding of what has been lost in Lahaina Town. Not just lives and property, but an entire town.
Most people hear "a city/town in Hawaii" and they picture probably resorts. And there are plenty of resorts nearby. But those are all fine.
Lahaina was an old whaling town dating back to the original colonization by white settlers. Before white people arrived, it was the capital of the island, where the high chief ruled, including Kamehameha the Great. The buildings are old, wooden, and crowded together. Obviously that was a problem in the face of the insanely fast wildfire.
But these weren't mansions, Mc or otherwise. It was a tourist town, a destination for cute, spendy shopping and dining, full of art galleries. (OMG THE GALLERIES. There was so much ART lost. There was original Dr. Seuss art in one gallery when I was there in January. That's gone now. Etc.)
But the people who lived and worked in Lahaina were mostly working class, working retail and restaurant jobs, living in old apartments and small houses. Lots of elderly, lots of non-white in a wide range of ethnicities, old hippies who have been there since the 60s and 70s. Yeah they were probably a little better off than people who drive in from other places to work in West Maui, at least because their property was high value, if they owned. But they lived without A/C, hung their laundry on lines, biked to work, called in sick to go surfing when the waves were up. There was a Chinese cultural center and a Buddhist temple, two different structures, if that tells you anything. Multiple museums housing historic items and cultural centers.
And the town will be rebuilt, in some form, I imagine. Or re-developed, more likely. People who are now homeless, who can't afford to rebuild or pay for two residences while the recovery happens will be bought out by deep pocketed developers. If they rebuild Lahaina Town I'm afraid it will be Lahaina Town tm by Disney.
Another fake paradise for tourists with lava rock from the Big Island. Another bit of Hawaii swallowed by capitalism and climate change.
I'm not painting everything about Lahaina as it was as perfect. Front Street was an often gaudy display of brand names and hucksters out to shovel in the tourist dollars. And of course the politics of Hawaii are incredibly complex and fraught in so many ways. I'm just a mainlander haole. I will never live on the islands, despite my family there constantly asking me to move. But I've spent more time there than anywhere I haven't lived, almost all of that time in West Maui.
My mom works in a building that is not there anymore. She just described that job to me as "the last job she'll ever have" as she's 79 and very happy with working two days a week selling t-shirts to cruise ship people. My brother has worked in a gallery on front street for the last ten years.
I don't know. A city of almost 15,000 permanent residents is just gone. 50 or so are confirmed dead, in some horrific circumstances from what I hear.
My mom says people are just walking around with thousand-yard-stares, aimless, clutching cell phones trying to get signal (there isn't any, but you can get lucky and get a call through. Some texts are going in but not out.)
So I don't know folks. Keep those people in your thoughts. If you can donate, I think this may be a good place because it's going to lots of local orgs on the ground: https://www.hawaiicommunityfoundation.org/maui-strong
I keep thinking of new sad things.
Anyway I'm going to leave you with a picture I took while strolling down Front Street one evening.

In Lahaina, the area in west Maui that is of historical importance to Indigenous people, entire neighborhoods were wiped out by this week’s historic wildfires, including the Na 'Aikane o Maui Cultural Center, which had a massive archive that was lost to the flames. Noelani Ahia, a Kanaka Maoli activist... describes the community's reaction to the destruction of Indigenous cultural documents, art and artifacts. “In the blink of an eye, it was burned to the ground, and all of those things were lost,” says Ahia. She also describes mutual aid efforts now underway and notes, “The people on the ground know what the community needs.”

Explore Why Maui Shopping Offers the Best Island Treasures
Maui, often referred to as the "Valley Isle," is renowned for its stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and majestic mountains. However, one aspect of Maui that is often overlooked is its vibrant shopping scene. Whether you're a seasoned traveler or a first-time visitor, exploring Maui's unique shops and markets can be one of the most rewarding experiences on the island. Here's why shopping in Maui is unlike any other, offering the best island treasures you won't find anywhere else.
Tumblr media
A Blend of Tradition and Modernity
Maui's shopping scene is a perfect blend of tradition and modernity. The island is home to various stores that offer everything from traditional Hawaiian crafts to contemporary art and fashion. When you stroll through Maui's shopping districts, you'll find an array of stores that pay homage to the island's rich cultural heritage. Local artisans create beautiful pieces inspired by the island's natural beauty, using koa wood, lava rock, and pearls.
One of the best places to experience this blend of old and new is in Lahaina. Once a whaling village, Lahaina is now a bustling hub for shopping, dining, and entertainment. You can find everything from high-end boutiques to small shops selling locally made products here. The historic Front Street is lined with galleries, jewelry stores, and specialty shops, making it a must-visit for anyone looking to take home a piece of Maui's culture.
Unique Local Art and Crafts
Maui is a haven for art lovers, with a thriving community of local artists who draw inspiration from the island's breathtaking landscapes. The island's galleries are filled with original paintings, sculptures, and photographs that capture the essence of Maui. For those looking to take home a unique piece of art, a visit to the many art galleries in Lahaina or Upcountry Maui is a must. These galleries showcase a variety of works from local artists, offering everything from traditional Hawaiian art to contemporary creations. One of the most cherished finds is handmade koa wood crafts. Koa is a native Hawaiian hardwood revered for its rich color and grain. Whether you're purchasing a small jewelry box, a beautifully carved bowl, or even a ukulele, koa wood items are timeless treasures that embody the spirit of Maui.
In addition to koa wood, you'll find jewelry made with black coral, seashells, and pearls. These materials are sourced locally and crafted into stunning pieces that reflect the island's natural beauty. Whether you're looking for a simple pendant or an intricate bracelet, the jewelry crafted in Maui tells a story about the island's culture and environment.
Vibrant Open-Air Markets
One of the highlights of shopping in Maui is the opportunity to explore its open-air markets. These markets are more than just places to shop—they are cultural experiences where you can immerse yourself in the local way of life. Farmers' markets across the island offer fresh, organic produce, locally made goods, and handcrafted items. For example, the Upcountry Farmers Market in Makawao is a treasure trove of organic fruits, vegetables, and homemade treats. It's also a great place to pick up handmade soaps, lotions, and other natural products made with locally sourced ingredients.
Another must-visit market is the Maui Swap Meet in Kahului, held every Saturday. Here, you can find everything from vintage Hawaiian shirts to handmade leis and various snacks and local delicacies. It's a great spot to find unique, affordable, and meaningful souvenirs.
High-End Boutiques and Designer Stores
For those with a taste for luxury, Maui doesn't disappoint. The island boasts several high-end shopping centers, where you can find designer brands alongside local boutiques. These shopping centers offer an array of luxury stores, art galleries, and fine dining restaurants, all set against the backdrop of Maui's beautiful scenery.
Here, you can indulge in retail therapy, picking up everything from designer clothing and accessories to high-end home décor. But the seamless blend of luxury and local charm makes shopping in these locations truly special. Many high-end stores incorporate Hawaiian motifs and materials into their designs, offering exclusive products only available in Maui.
Authentic Souvenirs and Gifts
When shopping in Maui, you'll find various authentic souvenirs and gifts reflecting the island's unique culture and heritage. From Hawaiian quilts to traditional hula implements, there's no shortage of items that make for memorable keepsakes. The quilts, in particular, are a popular choice among visitors. These quilts are hand-stitched by local artisans and often feature designs inspired by Hawaiian flora and fauna, making them beautiful additions to any home.
Another popular souvenir is Hawaiian coffee and macadamia nuts, which are grown locally. You can visit farms and plantations to learn about the cultivation process and purchase products straight from the source. These make for delicious gifts that offer a taste of Maui long after you've returned home.
Supporting Local Businesses
Shopping in Maui is not just about finding unique treasures—it's also about supporting the local economy and small businesses. Many of the island's shops, markets, and galleries are family-owned and operated, providing livelihoods for local artisans and entrepreneurs. When you purchase items from these establishments, you're directly contributing to the preservation of Maui's cultural heritage and the sustainability of its communities.
Moreover, many local businesses are committed to eco-friendly practices, using sustainable materials and production methods. By shopping locally, you're taking home a piece of Maui and supporting a greener, more sustainable future for the island.
Maui's shopping scene offers something for everyone, whether you're searching for traditional Hawaiian crafts, high-end fashion, or unique souvenirs. The island's blend of culture, art, and commerce creates an enriching and enjoyable shopping experience. As you explore the shops, markets, and galleries, you'll discover that each item carries a story—a connection to the island's history, people, and natural beauty.
So, whether you're looking to take home a piece of Maui or enjoy the experience of browsing through its vibrant markets and boutiques, shopping in Maui is an adventure in itself. It's an opportunity to discover the best island treasures and create lasting memories of your time in paradise.

Unforgettable Romance: Exploring the Best Couple Tour Packages to Jamaica and Hawaii
Whether you're newlyweds looking for a dreamy honeymoon or a couple celebrating a special anniversary, Jamaica and Hawaii offer some of the world's most romantic couple tour packages and all inclusive travel packages. With stunning natural scenery, luxurious resorts, exciting activities, and rich culture, these two gorgeous island destinations promise to bring you closer together and create lifelong memories. In this blog, we'll highlight some of the best deals and trip ideas for couples wanting to get away to Jamaica or Hawaii.
Tumblr media
Jamaica: Reggae Rhythms and Tropical Tranquility
Known for its laidback vibes, flavorful jerk cuisine, and sandy stretches of beach, Jamaica has long been a favorite tropical locale for enamored duos. Today, countless couple tour packages to Jamaica with resorts cater to lovebirds with amenities like overwater bungalows, private beach dinners, couple massages, and sunset catamaran cruises. Whether you're looking for an active, adventurous trip or pure relaxation, Jamaica delivers.
Some top trip ideas and package deals for couples include:
Negril beachfront all inclusive hotels with benefits such as Champagne breakfasts in bed and cocktail mixing classes held outside while breathing in the fresh ocean air as a hint for the spa treatments for two. Generally, the greater community in the area offers free wedding packages and vow renewals to veterans and their spouses.
Luxurious vacations of the mountains of Ocho Rios, where one can have private infinity pools, secluded villas, and scenic attractions like Dunn's River Falls, are not only fun but also a memorable experience. As with a spa treatment and a personal yoga class, completing the zen vibe.
Jamaica follows wellness trends having concrete, nature, yoga, and clean eating retreats. All of them center around the two main partners either enjoying a meditative experience together or going through art therapy, counseling services, and communication games.
Guests taking a well-rounded day hike will have the choice of the romantic coffee plantation inn or bungalows as a stay. Chose to get immersed more in rum, coffee tasting and authentic Land Rover adventure tours.

Tips for Booking the Ultimate Couple's Getaway
The one venom is the one that can spell the success of a couple's romantic getaway or the one poison that can break it. Here are some tips for picking the perfect escape:
It is wise to know what your must-haves and deal breakers are from the beginning - If seeing something new and exciting is what you want or you prefer a relaxed atmosphere. Do you care more about whether you stay in cozy little boutique hotels or big splashy resorts? This will allow you to limit your choices to breeds compatible with your circumstances.
You have an easy tool on hand, comparison shopping! - Thus, don’t book the first package you see. Use websites like TripAdvisor to review deals and discover special offers. From learner to learner: Engaging with fellow language learners through platforms such as community chat groups, online forums, or language exchange apps can not only provide emotional support but also practical feedback and motivation.
One very important element to consider when comparing package pricing is airfare and transportation costs.
Be sure to get into the fine prints into exactly what they're offering - some deals may sound like they are giving so much that they are malicious and often don't include taxes, fees, tips or certain activities.
Travel insurance would be a good idea, even for more peace of mind, especially during the storm.
Go for containment systems that offer adaptation with optional variations in case the initial plan does not work.
Whether you select beachside or retreat in the middle of the forest, Jamaica and Hawaii will take your relationship to the next level and bring the two of you closer. As your relationship develops, the memories and experiences are certain to last a lifetime! Instead of staying at home, choose our vacation journeys to extraordinary places and escape the ordinary now. Immediately book your couple's vacation of a lifetime!

Matisyahu + G. Love and Special Sauce 2023 Summer Tour
When it comes to concert venues in the SWLF region, there’s no better place than The Ranch Concert Hall and Saloon. Although the setup is clearly meant for line dancing, The Ranch provides a huge pit/floor with tons of seating areas surrounding it to relax and enjoy the show. Giant projectors are placed throughout the venue to ensure everyone can see the show, no matter what vantage point you’re at. When I heard Matisyahu was playing here, I knew I was coming. Reggae music was always a love of mine. The lineup consisted of support from G. Love and Special Sauce and Cydeways.
Cydeways was the opening act and quickly filled the atmosphere with some positive vibes. Between slipping in and out between reggae, alternative rock, and a little bit of rap sprinkled throughout, Cydeways managed to fill the floor with dancing couples and high energy. Cydeways is an alternative band out of Santa Barbara, CA. Their frontman Dustin was an extremely nice guy and their music reminds me of early Sublime.
G. Love was born in Philly and eventually moved around until the band ended up out west. Blending everything from folk, blues, and rap, it’s not a surprise they broke out in 1994 with their self-titled debut. Continuing to spread the love and sauce for over twenty-five years, G. Love and the Special Sauce would release seven more albums and four on his own.
G. Love and Special Sauce took the stage next. Artist paintings were displayed in the background showcasing one of G. Love’s many talents. It was pretty clear that G. Love and Special Sauce had the special sauce. Their music was captivating!
Starting off in the blues chair, G. Love showcased his musical skills by playing the guitar, harmonica, and singing. With Jim Prescott on the stand-up bass and Chuck Treece on the drums, this trio showed why their music has been phenomenal for over 20 years. At one point during the set, G. Love helped create a memory for one of the fans that they would never forget. G. Love noticed a fan taking a video of the performance and grabbed the phone to sing into it while performing on the stage. G. Love and Special Sauce had the sauce that night!
With Cydeways coming back on stage to kick off the music, also supported by Ezra Miller from The Flash and Fantastic Beasts, the light dimmed, hands went up in the air, shouts and whoops drowned out the instruments as Matisyahu walked out. He kicked off the show with the song Jerusalem. Reggae vibes and music filled the air with electricity as he swayed and glided across the stage in an almost ethereal fashion. The most iconic part of the night was when nearly everyone from the tour, including G. Love and the merchandise guy, came on stage to play the drums and jam. At this point, Ezra used his cup as his preferred instrument.
Smiles were on everyone’s faces, both on stage and in the crowd, as they all jammed in unison. It was unlike anything I’ve ever witnessed. There was so much love, joy, and happiness in the air. It was truly special. When people say things are a whole vibe and you had to be there to see/feel it, it’s true. I was happy to be a part of that moment and I don’t think I’ll ever see a show that can replicate that. Matisyahu played both old and new songs, jamming and beatboxing until the lights came on and the show was over.
Matisyahu, which is Hebrew for “gift of god” is a storyteller, Grammy award/nominated singer, beat boxer, and rapper.  Known for blending reggae and beatboxing, Matisyahu saw early success with “King without a Crown.” Named Top Reggae Artist by Billboard, Matisyahu has continued to preach love and equality across the globe.
If you can catch one of his remaining shows, don’t hesitate! It was an unforgettable and amazing experience!

Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson
San Diego Unified Superintendent prepared for a new school year of success
Summer vacation is just about over for students in San Diego Unified School District.
They are scheduled to return for the fall semester on Monday.
Superintendent Dr. Lamont Jackson sat down with KPBS Education Reporter M.G. Perez for a one-on-one interview and for a preview of the new school year.
Jackson said he is ready to welcome back students with a priority on their mental health.
“I think we're doing a much better job of exposing individuals, human beings to what they have been suffering with in silence. It's much more public. With that comes self-referrals. So, we're getting more students articulating what they're feeling," Jackson said.
The district is hiring more counselors and continues to empower its department of youth advocacy which provides support for children dealing with everything from gender identity to bullying, and cultural sensitivity issues.
Teachers are returning to the classroom this semester with a historic 15% pay raise over the next two years. That's just one highlight that came from negotiations that dragged on for more than a year
“They deserve that and more," Jackson said. "And we have said we want to be the highest-paying District in this County and we are very proud of our 100% benefits package. But at the core, it's a belief that our educators and our staff members deserve it. First and foremost, we as a district have to see our employees as valuable.”
This year, there will be a significant increase in the number of campuses now designated as Community Schools.
“When I was hired as Superintendent the community spoke, and the community said we need to support the whole child," Jackson said. “It's about bringing the resources of the community into the school as a hub. So, when you talk about mental health, you have support there. When you talk about physical health, we have on-site clinics. Look at Hoover, they have dental medical facilities, right on campus."
With the help of community organizations, private business, and state funding, San Diego Unified goes from just 5 community schools to 15 community school campuses across the district, this fall.
There is also the much anticipated guaranteed arts funding for every public school in California. Voters approved Prop. 28 last November which is expected to provide up to $1 billion from the state budget annually.
“We're going to hire more educators and we're going to have more programs. We're going to get instruments into the hands of our children. We're going to get great music and we are going to make sure that the Arts and academics are taking center stage together.”
Dr. Jackson and his wife did have a brief summer vacation to Maui. Their flight back home to San Diego took off just hours before the first fires started, leaving him bittersweet.
"We enjoyed (the vacation). But you know, my other thought was, gosh, I want to go back and I want to help," Jackson said. "I even had a crazy thought that we could do some hybrid learning and offer to the schools to Zoom some learning from here. We help out. And those who helped the most lost the most and it's sad. So you asked me about vacation I got away for a few days but I returned with a heavy heart." *Reposted article from KPBS by M.G. Perez on August 18, 2023
